Dr. Sam Higginbottom used this gift so effectively thatAgriculture became the mainstay of economy of India.Dr. Sam Higginbottom began his work by serving the poor; when he came to India herealized that the people over here were very much lacking in their skills and concepts.Therefore he started his service with the Gospel in his hand. This was the biggestblessing that God bestowed on him that he could serve man not only with skills andtechniques but also spiritually so that they may walk on the path that is right and true.“God’s people are like trees planted on the banks of a river, they produce fruitsin seasons and their leaves never fall”. Psalms 1:3The same was with Dr. Sam Higginbottom. He established AAI in the mighty presenceof God. Therefore nothing could stop him from providing fruitful services to the poorand needy of this country without any greed or selfishness. The reason behind thesuccess and development of this institution has been that its roots were planted andnourished with the showers of blessings from God our Lord.We believe that foundation of AAI and its Gospel Service “Yeshu Darbar” has beenon the rock of salvation (The Christ Jesus) so the gates of hell have never prevailedagainst it. EditorialUniversity life is one the most existing and accomplishing years. Studentswho have just finished their 10 + 2 or intermediate examination fromschool, finds a new freedom, new joy, and newer responsibility.Till the age, when they were in school, they were under the patronageof their parents, who were their guide and inspiration; they wereconstantly monitored in all their activities of life.They had to come home in time, they had fixed time to eat, limitedfriends and that too on the approval of their parent and limited pocket money.As they entered the university life, they got the freedom. Freedom to make new friends,freedom to use the money and freedom to manage time and decide on all aspect of day to daylife. In short, this is their first job as “Manager”.If they had managed their time, friends, and money and have made the best use of life at theuniversity, I am sure they would excel in future.In today’s world, students have a lot of questions, which needs to be addressed and onequestion, which looms large on their mind is the availability of jobs. During the course ofstudents life at the graduation level, they put too much of pressure on themselves about jobprospects. I think it is a waste of time, thinking of issues which will take its own course oftime, instead of pondering on these issues, they should equip themselves with skills which theindustry/companies needs, which will help them the procure jobs. They must identity thoseskills which the employer needs and polish themselves and get ready for the D-day whenthey face their interview. We must understand the difference between “eligibility” and“employability”. When they receive a degree, it makes them eligible to sit for the interview,but to make they “employable” they have to posses “soft skills” and “professional skills”.They must equip themselves with these soft & professional skills, which will finally enhancetheir employability.As long as you are in the university, make the best use of the facilities, interact with yourfriends and faculty members and take part in various activities of the university and enjoy life.A bare fact, that we all miss university life but have plenty to share our experience with theuniversity students and if at all we are successful, it is because we proved ourselve as “goodmanager” when we were in the university.Dr. Arif Albrecht Broadway4

UJJAVAL RAMAN SINGH VISITA day long Technical Training Programme for farmers onwasteland development through bamboo based agroforestrymodels was organized by College of Forestry. This programmewas based on research project sponsored by Ministry of LandResources being implemented in five districts of Uttar Pradesh-Allahabad, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Fatehpur and SantRavidasnagar respectively.On this occasion the Chief Guest Ujjawal Raman Singh,Environment Minister, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh in his addresssaid except the states of Haryana and Punjab the agriculturalproduction of our is not satisfactory due to lack of transfer ofresearch technology to our farmers due to communication gap.He expressed his concern on gradual depletion of forests due toincreasing demographic pressure on agricultural land.Consequently leading to reduction in food grain production. Hehighlighted that only 8% of area in UP is covered by forests.Meja and Shankargarh hilly areas of Allahabad districts aredenuded require afforestation and rehabilitation. He stressed onplanting of multipurpose free species, rain water harvest andproper utilization of ground water. Further he emphasized onpivotal role of students and professional of AgriculturalUniversities should transfer of technology to attain the objectivesof restoring forest productivity. Inaugurating the session, Prof.(Dr.) S.B. Lal Director Research and Dean, College of Forestryon the occasion of World Forestry Day, stressed on implementation of afforestaion on massive scaleto attain goal of Forest cover up to 33% whereas total area under forest at present is only 17%. Hereferred from the Holy Bible, Vedas and theological collection, which says that Forest plantation is anoble profession. He expressed that through research achievements on various research projectsmainly development of wasteland through Bamboo based agroforestry models in five district ofEastern Uttar Pradesh targeted at 500ha. He also conveyed the importance of innovative BambooFlute Technology, which received National Recognition Certificate from NMBA- New Delhi.Prof. (Dr.) H. Shepherd Pro-Vice Chancellor in his address welcomed distinguish guests participantsand appreciated the role of College of Forestry in providing extension and training programme tofarmers and rural community periodically. He also assured the farmers to correspond with academicianand researchers of AAI-DU for there farming and plantation problems in future Dr. B. Mehra, Asst.Professor (Agro-forestry) provided a brief glimpse on achievements of various sponsored researchprojects on Bamboo Based Agroforestry Models, Flute Technology, Multi Locational Trials vegetativepropagation of Bamboo and raining of elite planting materials for sustainable Jatropha (Biodieselplant) cultivation along with beneficiaries. The technical programme of three sessions were presentedby Prof. (Dr.) S.B. Lal, Dr. B. Mehra, Dr. Vikram Singh and Dr. Ramchander on Agroforestrymodels, Bamboo irrigation models for wasteland development. Organic farming and multiple treespecies respectively along with farmers agricultural field nursery visit. The programme, technicaland administrative staffs; B.Sc. Forestry, M.Sc. Agro-forestry, M.Sc. Environmental Sciences studentsand around 100 local farmers.6

UNIVERSITY DAYAllahabad Agricultural Institute – DeemedUniversity celebrated its Seventh University Dayon 15 th March. In this regard a glittering functionwas organized at AAI-DU premises.Speaking on the occasion Vice-Chancellor ofAAI-DU, Prof. Dr. Rajendra B. Lal said after along academic journey of ninety years the Institutehas reached a respectable destiny thankingAlmighty for the benediction and blessing. Hesaid that institute for the last seven years hasfaced a period of struggle. However, it emergedmore stronger and formidable. He also forebodedthat the next seven years would have a period ofsuccess and achievements for the institute.Speaking on this occasion Registrar of AAI-DUProf. A.K.A. Lawrence threw light over theactivities of the institute and said that institute ispresently running 26 UG courses, 42 PG coursesand 4 Diploma courses, Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr.John Oliver sand that AAI-DU would besuccessful in bringing laurels to the country.It may be mentioned here that on March 15, 2000the institute received Deemed University status.Thereafter institute is celebrating as UniversityFoundation day.7

The technique is a promisingway to develop wastelands has receivedwide acceptance from the farmers of NorthIndia and the same was demonstrated live inthe World Bamboo Expo held at New Delhifrom February, 28 th 2004 to March 2 nd ,2004.2. Agrometeorloical Advisory ServiceUnit:The college has established an Agrometerologialunit with funding from Department ofScience and Technology, Govt. of India. Itprovides weather forecasting services andpackage of practices for timely and effectivefarming operation in Allahabad district.3. Development of Wasteland in UttarPradesh:The college has been instrumental in thedevelopment of Wasteland in Uttar Pradeshand introduction of agroforestry models fordifferent regions of the state through itsproject.4. Eco-rehabilitation of degraded lands andsocial upliftment of rural people through bamboocultivation in Allahabad district. Bambooplantation is successfully carried out in SantravidasNagar, Kausambhi, Pratapgarh, Fathepurand Allahabad covering total area of76.0 hacters.5. Tree Borne Oil Seeds [Jatropha curcas L.]Jatropha plantation was carried out in 140.50ha. Area of Allahabad district.Extension :1. Capacity Building Programme Cell ofthe University is functioning in the College ofForestry and it is responsible for conductingall the training programmes.2. A Rural Education Council is functioningunder the aegis of College of Forestry.Thirty schools have been established in therural areas of different states with an aim topromote primary education among the ruralmasses.3. FARE WELLDr. (Mrs.) Pramila Gupta aninternationally acclaimedNematologist joined AllahabadAgriculture Institute as a CSIRPool Officer in 1972.Thereafter, she joined asLecturer in the Department of Biology in 1975 to1977. She proceeded on external assignments andAllahabad Agricultural Institute was fortunate tohave her back as lecturer in 1980. She continuedher career as Reader and then Professor, Headof Department and Dean, College of Agriculture.She also pursued Post Doctoral studies in Canadaapart from special international assignments. Prof(Dr.) Gupta was conferred with the VishistMahila Vaigyanik Puraskar in 2001 a prestigiousaward in the State of Uttar Pradesh. She haswidely traveled around the world and is a Fellowof several Scientific and Technical societies. Shealso holds membership of several national andinternational professional societies, besides beingon their Editorial Boards. Her outstandingcontribution in Research, Extension andPublication is well recognized.Dr. Pramila Gupta has been an assertive teacherand administrator leaving an indelible mark ongenerations of students who have fulfilled theirdreams to ultimate success.With deepest regards we wouldlike to express our gratitude toProf. (Dr.) S.S. Singh, whohas been associated with thisUniversity for the last thirtysevenyears. An academicianpar excellence Prof. Singh joined the erstwhileAllahabad Agricultural Institute in September1970 as Lecturer in the Department of Agronomyand then was promoted to become Reader in1986. In July 1992 he took charge as Head ofthe Department of Agronomy till his retirementon June 2007. He became Dean, College ofAgriculture & Dean, Faculty of Agriculture onJuly 1996 and remained as Dean, Faculty ofAgriculture till September 2006. Dr. Singh isknown for his soft spoken and loving nature everwillingness to extend his wisdom and physicalcontribution both in academic and non-academicresponsibilities. His contribution in agriculturalresearch, teaching and extension is recognizednationally. His perseverance is evident in hispublications which number in several scores andhis tooks, again over a dozen, are widely readacross the nation and world. His publicationsexpress his richness and command over hissubject. Dr. Singh is not only in the panel of expertswith the Government of India but has executedseveral prestigious projects successfully. Theachievements and contributions to IndianAgriculture is also well recognized including hisdevelopment of innovative techniques andpatents. Prof. (Dr.) Singh is immensely respectedby his students who always fondly remember himfor his academic guidance in graduate,postgraduate including doctorate programmes.His ability to remember every student by theirname is really awesome which leaves aneverlasting bond in the memory of every individualwho has had the opportunity to meet Prof. (Dr.)S.S. Singh and experience his teaching. Prof. (Dr.) Ram Lalcompleted 37 beautiful andeventful years on June 2007at this University. A mantotally committed to teachinga subject every student hadto go through beforegraduating from this university. It will be hard toforget his painstaking effort of writing thestatistical solution on the blackboard so perfectly,meticulously and patiently. Prof. Ram Lal joinedthe Allahabad Agricultural Institute in 1970 andsince then has been a person to reckon with Prof.Ram Lal not only took active participation insports but extended his knowledge to everystudent in fulfilling their dreams and reachingdestiny. Prof. (Dr.) Ram Lal is blessed with threechildren who are well settled in India and abroad.Prof. Ram Lal is a distinguished founder memberof Allahabad Statistical Association and continuesto be the Secretary & Treasurer of theAssociation. He is also a life member of FIM(Forum for Interdisciplinary Mathematics) U.S.A.and also has several outstanding national andinternational papers to his credit. Khan aDairy Scientist joinedAllahabad AgriculturalInstitute in 1967 in theDepartment of DairyTechnology as lecturer andcontinued on to take chargeas Professor and Head of Department (DairyTechnology) in 1988. Dr. Khan was also theDean, College of Dairy Technology till August2005 and even Dean College of Biotechnologyfor quite some time. Dr. Khan has the distinctionof having Post-Graduate Diploma in BusinessAdministration from the University of Allahabadin 1977. All these qualifications and achievementsspeak about his dynamic personality andversatility. Prof. Khan also has the achievementof being sought for his expertise by the Kingdomof Bahrain to impart manpower training forBahrain – Danish Dairy, Ministry of Labour apartfrom his assignments in Abu Dhabi for shortduration of more then one year. Innumerablestudents have conducted their postgraduate anddoctoral research under his able guidance andlook towards him for his continued inspiration.His books on milk processing and quality controlwill remain an everlasting source of valuableknowledge for generations to come. His fourchildren are well placed in India and aborad.Prof. Khan is a member of several professionalprestigious organizations including the IndianDairy Association and Tea Project of GoodrickGroup Ltd., Kolkata, Prof. A.Q.
