KINGSTON FRONTENACS gameday report
READY FOR ANOTHER BATTLE
frontenacs looking to shutout north bay in regular season series
familiar foe to the Kingston Frontenacs, the
A North Bay Battalion have proven to be a pesky
opponent over their years in Brampton and North
Bay. The sting of the playoff loss to the Battalion
last year has nearly faded–the Frontenacs have
won all three of their matchups vs. North Bay this
season with the final regular season tilt coming
tonight. While the history makes the game story
interesting on some levels, tonight’s matchup has
plenty on the line–for both teams.
The Battalion, in 3rd place–tied with Niagara–
are 10 points behind the Frontenacs in the Eastern
Conference. With 26 wins, 17 regulation losses, 4
overtime losses, and 4 shootout losses, the Battalion
have found consistency in their game with
6 wins, 1 regulation loss, 2 overtime losses, and 1
shootout loss in their past 10 games. They are the
perfect example of why the extra point even in a
shootout loss or overtime loss are key as they sit 4
points ahead of the Ottawa 67’s.
The Frontenacs, still the hottest team in the
East, are in the middle of a weekend that will set
the stage for the post-season. After 51 games this
season, the Frontenacs have 33 wins, 14 regulation
losses, 2 overtime losses, and 2 shootout
losses, good for 70 points, a 2 point lead on Barrie
for top spot in the Eastern Conference. In the East
Division, the Frontenacs have wide 12 point lead
over the Ottawa 67’s. In their past 10 games, the
Frontenacs have 7 wins, 2 regulation losses, and
1 shootout loss.
HOME ICE ADVANTAGE: Looking at the past 10
games for both teams shows a similar story: Kingston
is 7-2-0-1 and North Bay is 6-1-2-1. But factor
in each teams last 10 games at home and away,
and give the Frontenacs the edge with a 7-3-0-0
in their past 10 games at Rogers K-Rock Centre
and the Battalion with only 3-2-3-2 in their past 10
games on the road. KF
How do you turn a devastating
injury to a promising Finnish
import into a 6’5” Russian rookie
defenseman? Darren Keily and the
Frontenacs staff pulled it off and they did
it without much time or preparation.
After playing all 68 games for Kingston
last season, promising defenseman
Jarkko Parikka tore his Achilles tendon in
a practice prior to the start of the playoffs.
The injury was described as traumatic
but the training staff held out hope that
he might be able to return in the fall.
After talking to Jarkko, his family and his
agent in June, Keily said that the injury
was not responding as well as had been
expected. Following some discussions
the parties came to a mutual decision
and Parikko was released. Unfortunately
by the time they reached that conclusion,
the Frontenacs were well behind in terms
of scouting the 2015 import class.
“Normally I’m at the U18’s because
no matter how much you look at the
scouting reports, you’re always more
comfortable if you see the boys play
before you draft them,” said Keily.
“Since we thought we had our imports
(Lamikko and Parikka) I didn’t attend the
U18’s last spring so I had to depend on
our scouts and advisors.”
Those advisors had discovered
Konstantin Chernyuk, a lanky Russian
defenseman playing tier two junior
hockey in Wichita Falls, Texas. The
native of St. Petersburg, Russia had
a good foundation of skills and as the
saying goes in hockey circles, you can’t
teach size.
Coach Paul McFarland praised Keily
and the hockey operations staff. “Doug
and Darren worked hard on digging up
information and finding the right player,”
said McFarland. “Konstantin is a player
that’s come in and gotten better each
and every day. We like big defensemen
and he’s got great feet and moves the
puck well.”
For his part Konstantin feels he’s
adjusting to the speed and high skill
level of the OHL. “The first game with
the Frontenacs wasn’t that good for me
and I knew it was going to be hard,”
said Chernyuk. “Coach told me it was
going to be much faster and I didn’t
really understand the tactics but now I’m
starting to know what the players will do
and how they will play.”
By the end of October, the young
Russian was still looking for his first point
but in a game against Peterborough he did
manage to acquit himself well in an OHL
rite of passage – his first fight. Chernyuk,
who at 17 and 175 pounds isn’t yet the
imposing rearguard he will eventually
develop into, took on Petes’ rookie Ian
McKinnon and managed to land a few
bombs before the linesmen stepped in to
break up the scrap. Neither player was
injured and Chernyuk received a rousing
reach an elite level of hockey, Chernyuk
realizes the sacrifices that his family has
made to allow him to get to this point in
his young career. “My family put a lot of
their emotions and time into helping me,”
he said.
Since the fall of 2013 Chernyuk has
been living in North America pursuing
his dream to play hockey. After playing
the Russian equivalent of minor hockey
for one of the best teams in his home
country the team fired his coach, which
forced the Chernyuk family to make a
decision. The team was in disarray and
suddenly his dream to make a living
playing the game he loved seemed to
be in jeopardy. “The year before, we

had travelled to United States to play
a tournament in Scranton and they
spoke to my dad after the tournament
and said they wanted me to come
and play for them,” he recalled. With
his Russian hockey future uncertain,
Chernyuk and his family decided
he should make the jump to North
America. After a year with the U16
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, the
University of Maine came calling.
Then the Bloomington Thunder of the
USHL (the American equivalent of the
CHL) drafted him. In a very short span
of time his career had taken an upward
and decidedly American trajectory.
The following year, after realizing that
Scranton’s U18 team didn’t provide
enough of a challenge Chernyuk
moved to Wichita Falls, Texas to
play with a tier-two junior squad in
the Lone Star State. Meanwhile,
Bloomington had expressed interest
in the Russian youngster but they
were also very clear that they were
going for a championship and would
be focused on older players. His best
option seemed to be the NCAA route
so he signed a letter of commitment
to attend Maine and play for the
prestigious Black Bears in Division 1.
That’s when the Frontenacs entered
the picture and after again discussing
the best options with his father, a
jump to the OHL seemed to make the
most sense. “Me and my dad started
talking about where should I go, what’s
our next step. Go to the USHL go to
Maine or go to Canada to play for the
Frontenacs,” he said. “We decided
we have to go to Canada because the

hockey is better, the scouting is better
and it’s the main route to the NHL. We
made the decision pretty quickly.”
Both Keily and McFarland
are thrilled to have Konstantin in
Kingston. His six foot five inch
frame and matching reach gives
the Frontenacs’ defensive corps
something they haven’t had since Erik
Gudbranson departed for the NHL
in the fall of 2011. While this young
Russian has a long way to go to match
the contributions that Gudbranson
made to the team, the continuing
improvement Chernyuk has shown
with each game is a sign of good
things to come. “A lot of times it takes
until Christmas for new players to
start to feel confident in what they can
do,” said Keily. “Konstantin is already
starting to show that confidence.”
Chernyuk admits he’s especially
looking forward to Christmas this year
not just to reach another benchmark
of performance or to celebrate the
holiday but because his parents
are coming for an extended visit.
“My mom and dad are coming in
December and they’ll stay and see a
few games in the New Year,” he said
with a smile. “I really miss my family
and my friends that I grew up with and
I miss my mom’s Russian borscht. It’s
my favourite meal that my mom would
always cook for me.”
With home cooking on the horizon
and a boundless potential, Chernyuk’s
hockey future which only last year
appeared to be south of the 49th
parallel is now shining brightly with a
decidedly Black and Gold glow. KF

Warren Foegele was selected
by the Kingston Frontenacs
in the 7th round of the 2014
OHL Priority Selection. While initially
choosing to pursue his hockey dreams
via the NCAA route, Foegele, who
started this season playing for the University
of New Hampshire, left to join
the Kingston Frontenacs. We caught
up with the 3rd round selection of Carolina
Hurricanes.
His move to the OHL with Kingston
has proven fruitful and he’s found
linemates who are a very elite skillset
in Spencer Watson and Michael Dal
Colle. We caught up with him recently
after practice at Rogers K-Rock Centre.
GameDay: You were drafted by the
Kingston Frontenacs in the 7th round
of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection.
You chose to play in the NCAA initially
instead of the OHL. Tell us about that
route for hockey development.
warren foegele: Back then I
thought the NCAA was a better fit for
me. After going there for a year and a
bit I decided that going the other route
(OHL) would be better for my hockey
future. And now I’m enjoying it.
GameDay: Coming to the OHL,
where it’s a different experience than
the NCAA. Do you feel it’s a better experience
for you?
warren foegele: Yes, I think
it’s going really well. The team has
been doing really well lately and I’m
excited to be here.
GameDay: The OHL has a 68
game season, almost double that of
the NCAA. How are you preparing
yourself for the more physically demanding
season?
warren foegele: I thought I
had a good off season. I think that is
going to come into play for this season.
I know we play more games than the
NCAA but I should be fine.
GameDay: You were selected by
the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2014
NHL Draft, in the 3rd round, 67th overall.
With the potential for a pro contract
at the end of this season, what is your
focus when you step out onto the ice?
warren foegele: For now, it’s
just about winning hockey games.
For me, the team comes first and the
two points that come with each win
are what matters. If we can keep winning,
hopefully we can go for a run in
the playoffs, and that’s really what I’m
looking forward to the most right now.
GameDay: With almost a full season
under your belt for the Kingston
Frontenacs, how do you feel you’ve
meshed with the team?
warren foegele: Coming here,
the guys have been really nice to me,
the coaching staff have all been really
supportive, and that’s continued into
my play lately, just getting more and
more comfortable and just feeling like
a Frontenac. It’s been going really well.
GameDay: You’ve only played a
half-season of games at Rogers K-
Rock Centre, but is Kingston starting
to feel like home?
warren foegele: Yes it is, I’m
really enjoying it here. This building really
gets rocking. KF
Battling night after night side-by-side
with the same group of players,
working towards a common goal
and overcoming obstacles; these are
the bricks that form the foundation of a
team.
Ask any hockey player what they
remember most about their time on the
ice or off and you’re likely to hear the
same refrain over and over, “It was my
teammates.” When asked to think back
on his three seasons as a member of the
Kingston Canadians, Wayne Erskine is
singing from the very same songbook. “I
loved the hockey, I loved the competition
and I have great memories of many
team and personal accomplishments,”
recalled Erskine. “But the thing that
I remember most and the thing that I
miss the most about those days, is the
friendships and the camaraderie.”
So, this summer, Erskine and 30 or
more of his former teammates from the
1984-1987 Kingston Canadians will be
gathering in the Limestone City to look
back, share some stories and rekindle
those bonds.
The idea for the reunion was batted
around initially when the Frontenacs
hosted the OHL All Star game in 2010.
Part of the festivities included a game
between Kingston alumni and former
NHLers.
“We tried to do something right after
that game–it was so much fun,” said
Erskine. “But because of schedules and
such, we just couldn’t make it happen.
For whatever reason–everybody is much
more available now so it’s looking really
good for this summer.”
It’s been 30 years since many of
these players spent any time together
and the goal of Wayne Erskine and his
co-organizer Chris Clifford is to create a
weekend which will not just renew old
friendships but also give the fans and
community members a chance to see
the players they once cheered for from
the friendly confines of the “M Centre.”
“We had a pretty good team in those
days,” said Erskine. “Good coaching,
goaltending, lots of speed and scoring
and we were pretty tough when we
needed to be.”
Most long-time fans will remember
names like Jeff Chychrun, Scott Pearson,
Herb Raglan, Scott Metcalfe and the late
Bryan Fogarty but those teams also had
their share of locally grown talent. Ted
Linesman, Jeff Cornelius and goaltender
Chris Clifford carried the flag for their
hometown. In fact it was Clifford who
arguably drew more attention than any
other player when, on January 7th, 1987
he became the first goaltender in the
long and storied history of the Ontario
Hockey League to score a goal. “That
sure got a lot of media and it shone the
spotlight on us for sure,” said Erskine.
“But Chris would be the first to tell you
that we deserved the spotlight because
we had a solid team.”
A quick check of the 30-year-old stats
bears those claims out. The 1985/1986
team won the first round of the playoffs
against Oshawa but lost in what was then
a round-robin playoff format between
Kingston, Peterborough and Belleville.
The next year, the OHL returned to the
more traditional series of quarter finals,
semi-finals and finals. Kingston defeated
the Belleville Bulls in the first round but
lost to the Oshawa Generals. That loss
was the culmination of Erskine’s final
year. A few of his teammates like Raglan
and Chychrun would go on to successful
NHL careers. Although he wasn’t
playing in the OHL any more, Erskine
decided to stick around Kingston for a
while and was heartbroken to see the
trials and tribulations that would dog the
team in 1988 including a league-record
losing streak and changes in ownership,
franchise name and sadly, a downward
spiral for the team in general. “It was
disappointing based on what we’d
accomplished and on how good the
younger core group coming in looked,”
he said. “The issues with ownership
certainly trickled down to the players
and obviously they struggled to stay
focused.”
However, the dark days of the
Kingston Raiders did not diminish
Erskine’s love for his adopted city or for
his OHL alma mater. He’s still an avid fan
of the team and gets down to Kingston
from his home in Ottawa whenever his
job with Canadian Blood Services allows
for it.
The excitement is palpable in his
voice as he talks about finalizing plans
for the reunion. More than 30 players
have committed to return this summer
including former St. Louis Blues right
winger Herb Raglan and Flyers tough
guy Jeff Chychrun. Things will kick off
with a golf day for the players followed
by a Saturday afternoon that will involve
reconnecting with the fans and then
a more formal sit down dinner on
Saturday evening. Former players who
might be interested in attending should
get in touch with the Frontenacs front
office for contact information and more
details. KF
