29 focus Batteries BATTERIES Sales are set to spike Winter still sends battery sales into a spike says Richard Barnett With winter spreading its effects across the country there are plenty of cars that won’t be starting come the first cold snap. And while battery sales have slightly spread more across the year, it’s the winter that sends sales into a spike as tired batteries give up the ghost for the final time. <strong>The</strong> sales spread is better for retailers, who do not need to keep quite as many batteries in stock as they once did. But as with so many other replacement parts, the battery segment has become more complicated with the rise of stop-start systems and increasingly high levels of luxury, convenience and entertainment facilities. It all adds up to a more complicated but buoyant, profitable segment. And with battery failures being the biggest cause of breakdowns, motorists need to be assured their car’s battery is in the best condition. Yuasa says that during its battery-testing workshop trial 11 percent of cars needed a replacement battery and 27 percent required recharging or reconditioning.
