rings, but working with<br />

shock absorbers, springs<br />

and other suspension components<br />

the tyres transmit power, slow a car<br />

down and keep it on the tarmac going<br />

through the bends.<br />

And as cars have changed, so too<br />

have tyres. A modern car wouldn’t work<br />

well with crossplies or earlier radial<br />

designs, and today’s tyres also have to<br />

cope with reducing noise and helping<br />

achieve greater fuel economy through<br />

reduced rolling resistance.<br />

But while the demand for tyres is<br />

phenomenal, for a long time many<br />

workshops just didn’t bother getting<br />

involved. It was something handled by<br />

the fast-fits, and independent garages<br />

were often reluctant to get involved.<br />

If anything the money-making opportunity<br />

to be had from tyres is greater<br />
