Issue 308
February 2020
Hello
Welcome to this issue of The Garage.
The Motor Ombudsman
can help you to exceed
them.
Our thoughts go out to the families
that have suffered damage due
to major flooding in parts of the
country this month. It is very
close to home, as two major
towns where we are based in Shropshire
have been subject to severe ‘danger to
life’ warnings. In this difficult time, it is
humbling to see the will and determination
of humanity shining through. Stay Safe.
We look at the future and what is on the
horizon for us concerning our transport
choices. The Government have issued an
update regarding the banning on selling
new petrol, diesel and now hybrid cars
from 2035 onwards, which will give many
people a dilemma in terms of what to buy
over the coming years. Consumers will only
be able to buy electric or hydrogen cars and
vans once the ban comes into effect.
Climate change is at the forefront of
debate and many believe that the electric
vehicle is the only way forward if the
country is to hit the ambitious target
set for 2050 of net zero emissions. But,
we continue to be wary of the lack of
infrastructure currently within our shores.
There will need to be a total re-think from
a driver perspective in terms of route
planning and the extra time needed to
re-charge if necessary.
In this issue, VLS Chairman Andrew
Goddard talks about the challenges
facing the lubricants industry and the
increasing importance of the role of electric
vehicles. Denso also talk about the need
for parts manufacturers to evolve existing
technologies and develop new ones in order
to offer the most innovative and reliable
parts for these engine types.
Then we come to the topic of the
autonomous car. We speak to Ansible
Motion on the issues on potential motion
sickness. Many people feel queasy whilst
travelling as a passenger or even when
reading in the car, it can make some
people turn green. They go on to explain
how engineers are currently working on
solutions to alleviate such issues.
Enjoy the issue!

OIL GRADE PICTURE GETTING
INCREASINGLY COMPLICATED
The headaches surrounding oil grades are set
to increase for automotive professionals over
the coming years, a leading lubricant expert has
warned.
THE number of different
engine oils on the
market has soared in
the last decade.
Whereas once
most cars required a basic
15W-40 viscosity oil or a
10W-40, there is now a much
wider range available depending
on OEM and vehicle.
Leading lubricant manufacturer
FUCHS Lubricants
now has circa 30 core engine
oils. Ford alone now has four
main oil specs.
“It’s horribly complicated,”
said FUCHS’ UK Automotive
Technical Manager, Andy
Brown. “In the aftermarket,
you could need to stock in the
region of 17 different grades
to cover a wide selection of
vehicles.
“Unfortunately, it’s only going
to get worse, particularly
with hybrids and EVs playing
an ever-increasing role in the
automotive market.
“Ultimately, it’s all about
emissions and fuel economy.
OEMs have been hit with
stringent emission targets
and the oil can play a significant
role in helping them
achieve that.
“At the most basic level, it’s
about hydrodynamic lubrication.
Thinner oils result in
less friction and, therefore,
less energy being used.
“That’s why we’ve seen 0W-
16 enter the market. 0W-12
and 0W-8 will come. I’d expect
to see 0W-12 this year
or next from one of the major
OEMs.
“Oil should be considered
a critical component. You
wouldn’t use the wrong tyres,
and you shouldn’t use the
wrong oil either.”
Andy said that the situation
is further complicated
by the fact that there is much
more to an engine oil than its
viscosity.
Two 5W-30 oils, for example,
could be quite different
in their make-up due to the
additives added to them to
deal with the specific needs
of individual OEM’s components,
particularly the piston
rings and the upper cylinder
areas.
Andy outlined the different
lubrication considerations
which are at play when
it comes to hybrid and EV
vehicles.
“EV vehicles are typically
factory fill and sealed for life,
so there is little or no aftermarket
for those,” he said.
“Hybrids are slightly different
because the engine isn’t
FUCHS’ UK Automotive Technical Manager, Andy Brown
always running. The engine
will cool down when running
on the battery, so the oil
needs to be able to cope with
those stresses.
“Some existing products
are hybrid compatible, but
others will need to be adapted
to suit the unique demands
of hybrid systems and
for some there will be brand
new technology.”
Furthermore, Andy said
he expected new ACEA specifications
to be announced
this year, with A5, B5 and
C5 specs being axed and new
ones brought in, mainly to
address LSPI issues found
in turbocharged gasoline engines.
All of this amounts to a
severe headache for motor
factors and professional motor
mechanics as they seek to
stock the products their customers
want and need.
Andy said: “We appreciate
that oil can be daunting these
days – and the cost of getting
it wrong can be severe.
“But there are a few simple
things people can do to
ensure that they use the right
oil. Firstly, consult the handbook
and check the requirements
carefully.
“Secondly, use an online
oil checker system to find the
right products just from a
number plate.
“Thirdly, speak to an expert.
Our customer service
team is happy to advise either
on the telephone or by email.
“For the aftermarket, we
run education courses to
help people understand how
to use oil properly, and we are
also supplying smaller, 20L
Lube Cube packs instead of
the once commonplace 205L
barrels so that they can stock
a wider range of products.”

Quick Lane invests in extended MOT offering
The UK network of Quick Lane
Tyre & Autocentre has taken a
significant step forward after its
Bracknell site was awarded MOT
testing certification from the
Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency
(DVSA). The news means that each one of
Quick Lane’s 15 centres now offers MOT
testing, building a powerful national network.
The company, which has been operating
as a franchise in the UK for a year,
sees the burgeoning MOT market as a
key source of business, with dedicated
bays, equipment and testers in each
Quick Lane location. Its strategy to provide
motorists with convenience with
confidence, together with a service that
fits around driver’s needs is paying off,
with plans to extend the network further
throughout 2020.
John Dines, UK Operations Director at
Quick Lane UK, commented: “We are now
well on our way to establishing the Quick
Lane franchise in the UK and Europe.
We’re finding that our business model is
striking a chord with both franchisees
and customers alike, who are looking for
a different approach to vehicle inspection.
“MOT and servicing remains an area of
growth for our centres and we’re also finding
that customers are increasingly look-
ing for fast and effective services around
the wheel. Our transparent approach and
convenient opening hours are helping us
earn market share and growing the Quick
Lane franchise.”
Dines has also stated that the business
has further plans for continued expansion
throughout 2020, with existing franchisees
also keen to add multiple locations
to their Quick Lane portfolios.
“We work closely with each franchisee
to help them maximise and grow their
territories and this strategy is really paying
off across our European network. In
the UK and Germany there is demand to
expand existing territories, whilst also
adding new sites for new franchisees,”
Dines added.

of the Year 2019, Avia
Autos, to its list of members.
A small, independent
workshop operating in South
Wales, Avia is accredited by
the RMI, IGA and the Motor
Ombudsman.
The forward-thinking
business is keen to address
common industry issues to
prepare for the future of motoring
and help to educate its
customers by bringing potential
problems to light.
As a result, it works closely
with government agencies
to provide key insight and
intelligence. This ability to
provide content and information
has also been utilised by
commercial organisations,
such as NGK Spark Plugs
and NTK Technical Ceramics.
An enthusiastic Hayley
Pells, director of Avia Autos,
commented: “The core business
of Avia remains the repair
and maintenance of light
vehicles. Our growing concern
for the future of technical
information access, the
support of the ‘Your Car Your
Choice’ campaign, and the
IAAF’s representation of the
industry, including to both
government agencies and the
media, prompted Avia’s desire
to join the IAAF.”
Hayley is already very familiar
with the work of IAAF
after recently speaking at its

TO AVOID PROBLEMS,
FIT VEHICLE SPECIFIC, NOT
GENERIC AUXILIARY BELTS
There is a myth in the aftermarket that belt
specifi cations, particularly for the auxiliary drive, are
generic rather than vehicle specifi c, which is at odds with
normal practice for many other engine related products
and completely alien to Dayco’s tailored engineering
ethos.
MOT Wallets from
she explained how there is
still time for independent
garages to embrace technological
changes, particularly
given the rise of hybrid and
electric vehicles, so long as
the need for greater engagement
with industry training
is highlighted.
Wendy Williamson, chief executive
of IAAF, said: “Technicians
such as Hayley and her
team are at the heart of everything,
we as an industry, do.
They’re out in the field, day
in, day out, communicating
with motorists and receiving
a first-hand insight into the
issues that we need to continue
to resolve. It’s great to
have Avia Autos’ support as
a member.”

sales@kpsprinters.co.uk
One of the more obvious repercussions of this ‘one
size fi ts all’ mentality, has been the resulting problems
that have arisen following replacement of the original
equipment (OE) auxiliary belt. Despite the practices
of some aftermarket suppliers, the OE auxiliary belt is
specifi cally designed to conform to very strict dimensions
and so, where replacement belts of generic, rather than
vehicle specifi c length have been fi tted, failures have
occurred.
It is however, not just the belt length that matters, it’s
the way the belt is manufactured and for some particular
applications, the construction has been improved to
include aramid fi bres, for example.
The combination of non-application specifi c length belts
and non-conforming construction is a recipe for disaster
and with several Volvo applications in mind, the resulting
belt failures have not only caused inconvenience and left
motorists stranded, but there have been cases when the
broken belt has also damaged auxiliary components and
even caused the drive system to seize, leaving a hefty bill
at the door of the workshop.
However, the policy followed by Dayco, a leading engine
products and drive systems supplier for the automotive,
industrial and aftermarket industries, is to only
manufacture vehicle specifi c products, which therefore
provide independents with an OE quality solution that is
designed to the precise specifi cation, in terms of both
their dimensions and construction, to the OE article.
In addition, Dayco is the OE supplier of the auxiliary
belt for the several Volvo applications, so only by fi tting
a Dayco Poly-V belt, can the independent workshop be
certain to fi t a like-for-like replacement for these and
many other makes and models.

transmission products in the Dayco range, please email:

Thousands of MOT testers face suspension
as training and assessment deadline nears
More than 50% of MOT testers
have now completed their annual
training and assessment but DVSA is
today (20 February) urging the rest to
do so or face being suspended.
With just over a month to go
until the 31 March deadline, DVSA
figures show that 30,950 testers still
need to complete the training and
assessment. Last year, 1,882 were
suspended for failing to do so. This
compares to 5,538 suspensions in
2018.
Every year, all 63,000 MOT testers
have to carry out training and
assessment on set topics to make
sure they are competent and safe to
carry out MOTs.
DVSA Product Manager, Simon
Smith said:
“DVSA’s priority is to help everyone
keep their vehicle safe to drive.
“Annual training and assessment
is a vital part of continuous
improvement to maintain high quality
MOTs. Last year more testers than
ever completed their training and
assessment on time.
“But to avoid the last-minute rush,
testers should record their training
and assessment results well before
31 March. We’re really pleased with
the improvement from last year and
I’d like to thank all those testers who
did so.”
Annual training and assessment was
introduced in 2016 as a programme of
continuous improvement for testers
so they are well informed about the
work they do and keep up to date
with new technology and industry
requirements.
Further information
Currently, 30,950 testers still
need to do their annual training and
assessment to avoid being suspended
from testing.
If suspended from testing, testers
will need to complete all next year’s
topics and take a demonstration test
to be able to return to testing. This will
lead to a delay while they are waiting
to take a demonstration test.
Testers need to do at least 3 hours
of training each year and a total of 16
hours in 5 years.
The pass mark for the assessment
is 70%. This will increase to 80% for
2020 to 2021.
Current training topics - www.gov.
uk/mot-tester-training-assessments/
training
The assessment consists of 30
multiple-choice questions and
usually takes around 45 minutes to
complete. If any trainers are dyslexic,
they should contact their awarding
organisation.
Testers need to check they record
their assessment details correctly
and match their MOT testing service
profile.
Testers can train individually, in a
group or on a course with a training
provider.
DVSA takes a flexible approach to
training so testers don’t have to do it
all in the workplace. The assessment
is online so testers can do their
assessment at home if they wish.
They can also use their notes and
MOT inspection manual during the
assessment.

It occurs when oil
on the cylinder wall mixes
with freshly injected fuel and
atomises. These two substances
create a mixture that
spontaneously ignites when
compressed by the rising
piston, before the spark plug
fires.
The resulting rapid, uncontrolled
rise in pressure
can cause irreparable damage
to pistons, rings, cylinder
heads and con rods, even
leading to complete engine
failure.
LSPI takes place at large
throttle openings and low
to moderate engine speeds,
such as when accelerating in
a high gear but at a low rev
count.
Why has LSPI
become a more
common problem?
With increasing demand
for passenger cars to become
more efficient, vehicle manufacturers
have engineered
downsized turbocharged engines
as a means of reducing
emissions and improving efficiency.
However, due to the
high combustion pressures
involved in some vehicles,
this has resulted in a continued
problem with LSPI.
Does LSPI affect both petrol
and diesel engines?
LSPI is only a problem for
GENERATIONS OF
QUALITY.
petrol engines due to the different
methods of ignition.
Petrol engines are designed
with a spark plug for ignition
to give controlled combustion.
Diesel engines rely on
gas compression for ignition,
so are not affected by LSPI.
How is Millers Oils able to
solve the LSPI problem?
Millers Oils has developed
a new engine oil, XF Longlife
LSPI 5w30, that uses the
latest additive chemistry to
compensate for the shortfall
in engine design. This means
drivers can avoid the problem
of LSPI and costly engine
damage simply by using the
correct oil.

MELETT GROWS PARTNERSHIP
WITH UNIVERSAL TURBOS
MELETT, the
leading UK
supplier of
precision engineered
turbochargers
and parts, has expanded
its partnership with
specialist turbo repairer
Universal Turbos.
Universal Turbos, based
in Hampshire, supply workshops
in automotive, motorcycle,
marine, off-highway
and agricultural sectors,
offering a complete turbo
repair and replacement service.
As the turbo repair and
remanufacturing market undergoes
a resurgence, Melett
has been working on a series
of new initiatives to support
turbo repair specialists
when faced with increased
demand from independent
garages, motor factors, buying
groups, and warehouse
distributors.
Universal’s technical director
James Hard explains:
“Universal is relied upon to
supply quality turbochargers.
The selection of the correct
turbo for a vehicle has
become more complex and
we have to take customers
through a process of elimination
to find the right product
for them. Vehicle manufacturers
can change turbo suppliers
and, as a result, we can
have five different versions of
a turbo for one vehicle make
and model. To support us,
we have complete confidence
in Melett parts and the information
they provide, offering
full traceability on all parts.”
With this increase in demand,
Melett – through its
“What’s in Your Turbo?”
campaign is encouraging the
market to question parts
quality even more and look
beyond price and appearance.
It is risky to assume
that parts are identical, even
if they look the same.
“Fault finding has become
tougher due to variations in
diagnostic equipment and
the mechanic’s ability to interpret
the results, and the
fact that the industry has
been taught to trust the computer
with all the answers,”
said Hard.
Darren Johnson, Head of
Sales at Melett, said: “As a
leader in the supply of highquality
turbocharger parts,
Melett exists to support companies
like Universal who are
relied upon to have the relevant
expertise and correct
specialist equipment to offer
the very highest level of turbocharger
repairs.”

Automated clutch
systems from
ZF Aftermarket
Despite not being
adopted as a
mainstream solution
across the automotive
industry,
certain car brands installed
automated manual transmission
(ASG or AMT) systems
in significant numbers.
The most prominent example
is Smart. Here, clutch
specialist ZF Aftermarket –
which has spare parts under
its Sachs brand for many
vehicles with ASG in its program
– provides tips for successful
clutch replacement.
With the automated manual
transmission, the automotive
industry wanted to
establish an alternative to
automatic transmissions
with torque converters
about 20 years ago. It was
based on the conventional
manual transmission in a
countershaft design including
a dry clutch and was
equipped with hydraulic or
electric actuators that operated
the clutch and changed
gears.
The car brand Smart
equipped 100 percent of the
first two generations of its
two-seater vehicle with this
drive variant. These models
were built between 1998
and 2015. Marketed in 46
countries worldwide, production
had surpassed 1.7
million by early 2015. Other
manufacturers who opted
for the ASG were Citroën,
Dacia, Renault and Iveco.
Even the Volkswagen Group
equipped its miniature car
series and the corresponding
Skoda and Seat models
with ASG from 2013.
Automated couplings
are stable and rarely
experience errors
Being a rarer variant, however,
although the technology
is basically the same in
manual transmissions as in
vehicles with ASG, there are
some striking differences
that must be considered as
this can take its toll on the
clutch during a repair.
In general, automated
clutches are stable and less
prone to errors. Since engagement
is performed by
an electronically controlled
actuator, operating errors
by the driver are irrelevant.
Driving at too low a speed is
also avoided by the automatic
gear change. Nevertheless,
even automated clutches
wear out at some point or
side effects such as plucking
or incomplete separation
occur. The correct installation
of the spare part is then
decisive for driving comfort
and service life, because the
electronic actuation works
according to fixed parameters.
If the output values, according
to which the control
unit works, are not correct,
this can, for example, lead
to unharmonious starting
behavior.
Precise testing even
before installation
The spare parts leave the
production plants fully tested
and in perfect condition.
In exceptional cases, however,
slight damage may occur
during transport, which
could lead to a malfunction
in the vehicle and result
in it having to be dismantled
again. For this reason,
a careful inspection of the
entire component is necessary
before installation. Particular
attention should be
paid to the side impact and
ZF Aftermarket provides a
side impact tester for this

19 NEWS
purpose. If the limit value of
0.5 millimeters is exceeded,
the mechatronics engineer
should eliminate the lateral
runout of the clutch disc
with the help of a straightening
fork.
Apart from the clutch itself,
damage can also occur
on the actuator. These components
can only be replaced
in their entirety, but this requires
little effort. There is
only an electrical connection
to the vehicle. Note: For
some models the workshop
has to adjust the preload of
the actuator by spring balance.
For other vehicles, the
workshop must first learn
how to use the diagnostic
device, whereby the transmission
control unit determines
the grinding point of
the clutch.
If the workshop team observes
basic rules such as
extreme cleanliness and correct
centering of the clutch
before assembly, then nothing
stands in the way of a
successful repair.

FEATURE The connnected car 22
WHAT COULD THE CONNECTED
CAR REALLY DO FOR ME?
REMEMBER when you bought
a car and how mates or work
colleagues would want to know
how much power it had? What
was the top speed? Was it twin
carb?,Fuel injected? And when they first
started appearing, if it had a… turbo?
In slightly more recent times, you might
be more swayed as to whether it had
Bluetooth connectivity or even a trickedup
sound system with massive woofers
on the parcel shelf. It’s true that we
were more obsessed with the hardware
rather than the experiences but as we
get more immersed in future automotive
technology, it’s likely that your customers
are going to be more focused on ‘EPM’
not ‘RPM’. That’s ‘experiences per mile’ if
you’ve not heard of that one before.
So, what are these ‘experiences’
really going to be? Helpfully connected
car specialist HARMAN has identified
some of the use cases that bring to life
the acronyms that are getting bandied
around. Too often we hear about the
technologies; 5G, V2X, ADAS but not
what it means. Let’s look at how it could
change the in-car experience.
Think about your consumer devices
and the products you use every day. Your
expectations are centred on experiences
not features. HARMAN believes the car
is set to enter that phase and it will only
accelerate. In the past, the journey was
just that, but HARMAN claims that more
connectivity will enrich those times.
Its EPM technologies will ensure your
time in the car becomes time well spent
with experiences at the forefront. The
objective is to allow drivers to do more,
or less, and stay safe while doing it.
Let’s look at an example and meet
mum Hannah. Using HARMAN’s smart/
auto Telematics Application Gateway
Device, Hannah can monitor all her
family’s cars; their location, destination
and health—all from her office or kitchen
table.
Tonight, she’s prepping a big family
meal and ahead of the weekend, traffic
is heavy. Her son Robbie is out with
his mates, her husband is out doing a
final shop and her elderly parents are
driving in from an hour away. Hannah’s
HARMAN smart/auto app shares any
alerts, giving her peace of mind. Her son
Robbie might not be the biggest fan, but
the geofence feature helps keep tabs on
where he actually is! For her parents,
it’s a different kind of supervision. On
the way over the HARMAN smart/auto
Connected Automotive ADAS Dashcam
detects a car pull out and alerts
Hannah’s father Tom with a “forward
collision warning.” Tom hits the brakes
and avoids colliding with the car in
front of them. The cake Hannah’s mum
has baked for dessert is nearly lost.
Hannah’s app also receives the “forwardcollision
warning” and knows her folks
see the same alert.
Distracted driving and forward-

collision warnings can help increase
overall vehicle safety—something
Hannah’s particularly grateful for
because her parent’s Rover from 2001
previously lacked the connectivity
features available through the dashcam
in her own 2019 SUV. It’s not over yet
for them either. Grabbing a coffee and
comfort break at the services, a different
car reverses into them. A “collision
warning” sounds and due to the impact,
the HARMAN Ignite post-accident service
springs into action. Fortunately for
the pair, any stress is eased as Tom’s
phone rings almost immediately and a
HARMAN Ignite agent asks if anyone’s
been injured. Back at home, Hannah
is alerted of her parents’ crunch.
She calls her mum and is relieved to
hear everyone’s OK—even the cake
has survived for a second time! This
example highlights how even retrofitted
connectivity such as the dashcam could
keep everyone safe. Perhaps it’s a good
enough reason to keep driving that twolitre,
DOHC, 16v, fuel injected car you
fell in love with all those years ago.

FEATURE Hybrid Vehicles 26
DENSO CONTINUES TO FRONT
THE MOVE TO ELECTRIFICATION
The increasing popularity of hybrid and electric vehicles has required
parts manufacturers to evolve existing technologies and develop
entirely new ones in order to offer the most innovative, efficient and
reliable parts for these engine types. As such, DENSO has made
revolutionary progress with rotating electric machines, as well as
compressors and sensors.
WITHIN HOURS
of the UK government
announcing
its
intention to
ban new petrol and diesel
car sales by 2035, online
searches for electric cars
surged by 162% above average
levels, according to
Auto Trader. That renewed
consumer interest comes
as sales and electric hybrid
vehicles continue to climb in
the UK.
Electric vehicle sales rose
sharply in January, according
to Society of Motor Manufacturers
and Traders figures,
increasing from 1,334
in 2019 to 4,054 this year.
That number translates to
2.7% of the new car market.
Hybrid sales also climbed,
despite the government’s
choice to also blacklist the
vehicles in 2035, with almost
one-in-five cars sold
being either fully electric or
hybrid-running on technology
that includes both an
engine and battery.
As more initiatives are put
in place to increase use of
sustainable mobility solutions,
the need for automotive
manufacturers to be
forward-thinking has never
been greater.
DENSO is dedicated to
technological development
and has been at the forefront
of innovations since the electrification
of vehicles began.
An ever more varied catalogue
of part numbers and
a host of DENSO world first
technologies are testament
to the company’s progressive
approach.
Since introducing an e-
compressor with integrated
inverter for hybrid cars in
2005, there have been several
DENSO breakthroughs
which have contributed to
the rapid increase of electrified
parts. An integrated
hybrid control computer,
battery monitoring unit,
DC-DC converter, superior
battery cooling system and
high-output power control
unit (PCU) are all evidence of
DENSO’s innovative stance
on electrification.
As well as pioneering the
increased handover from
traditionally-fuelled engines
to hybrid, DENSO is also responsible
for the continued
improvement and evolution
of parts for hybridised powertrains.
THE EVOLUTION OF
ROTATING PARTS
As a replacement for conventional
starters and alternators,
DENSO has crafted a
motor-generator (MG) stator
for use in hybrid vehicles.
The MG component performs
several functions, including
starting and assisting
the engine, generating
electric power and driving
the axles.

27 FEATURE Hybrid Vehicles
Several significant developments
have already been
made with this range of specialised
products. Drawing
on the experience used to
create the segment conductor
(SC) alternator, DENSO
developed a completely new
MG stator for the Prius that
is smaller and lighter by
more than 20% compared
to the previous generation,
which helps the vehicle
achieve a fuel economy of
40km/L.
CREATING THE
E-COMPRESSOR
DENSO was responsible
for the world’s first massproduced
electric compressor
with an integrated inverter
and motor.
Whilst conventional compressors
are driven by the
engine, making them unsuitable
for use in hybrid vehicles,
DENSO’s e-compressor
is driven by an internal
motor. This not only makes
it applicable to hybrid engines,
but it also improves
fuel efficiency as well.
In the case of a hybrid
power train it is possible to
run air conditioning functions,
both when the engine
is idling and switched off,
thanks to the power provided
by the internal motor
of the e-compressor. This
represents a significant advantage
over traditionally
fuelled vehicles, as it maintains
a comfortable cabin
environment whilst saving
on fuel wastage.
NEW SENSOR
TECHNOLOGY
FOR ELECTRICAL
COMPONENTS
In hybrid vehicles, the
petrol engine part of the
powertrain is monitored by
standard engine management
system (EMS) sensors.
However, there is also
the addition of several other
sensors specific to high
voltage (HV) electrified components.
Development of
these types of sensors are a
direct result of the electrification
trend and the rise of
alternatively fuelled vehicles.
Electric/hybrid specific
sensors include:
• Battery current sensor:
Detects current flow and
monitors the state of the
main HV battery charge
(SOC)
• Rotational angle sensor
(Resolver): An indispensable
sensor for optimal MG
control
• System main relay (SMR):
High voltage relay for the
safety and protection of hybrid
system’s main power
supply – the HV battery
It is clear that the technological
advancements made
by DENSO have helped to
shape the current face of hybrid
vehicles.
As the move toward electrification
continues, DENSO’s
pioneering parts will evolve
into new spheres of technology
and sustainability.

Feature Electric Vehicles 28
Electric evolution: Lubricants adapt
to the demands of electric vehicles
VLS Chairman Andrew Goddard reviews the
challenges the lubricants industry faces with
the impending bans on petrol, diesel and now
hybrid engines from 2035 and the increasing
importance of the role of electric vehicles.
Do lubricants
still have a role to
play in a future vehicle
market dominated
by electric
vehicles? Electric vehicles do
operate differently to internal
combustion engines, but
they still need lubricants.
In internal combustion engines,
the role of lubricants
has always been to help the
engine run smoothly and efficiently
by reducing friction
in moving parts, so delivering
maximum efficiency
for drivers at lower maintenance
costs. Using the correct
lubricants can enhance
the performance of the engines
and protect them over
the longer-term.
Fully electric vehicles still
require lubrication, but these
drive-line lubricants must be
adapted to meet the different
challenges of battery-powered
engines. The engines
in electric vehicles operate
at higher temperatures, particularly
when fast-charging.
This means that the lubricant
not only has to perform
just as well under heat pressure,
but it must also help to
dissipate this increased level
of heat around the engine to
maintain the engine components
effectively and resist
oxidation, caused by higher
temperatures.
The quantity of these
drive-line lubricants required
is significantly less
than in conventional internal
combustion engine vehicles.
However, even as little as a
single litre of lubricant needs
to be a truly multi-purpose
fluid, supporting transmission,
gears and even braking
in some instances. So,
although the volume of lubricant
required in electric
vehicles is significantly less
than conventional vehicles,
it is likely that the value of
that single, multi-purpose
lubricant will be much higher,
due to the technical com-

29 Feature Electric Vehicles
plexity of the product and its
multi-purpose role. The cost
of a litre of oil may therefore
increase, but we won’t need
to buy as much of it.
Some major oil manufacturers
have already started
creating new fluids specifically
for both light and heavyduty
electric vehicles as the
market, albeit from a small
base still, continues to grow.
These specially designed ‘efluids’
have been specifically
formulated to be insulating,
as they are in close contact
with the electrical and/or
electronic components of the
vehicle. They are compatible
with copper, a material used
in electric vehicles because
of its’ high electrical conductivity.
Whilst delivering these
unique and different characteristics,
they also still perform
their basic function of
limiting wear, oxidation and
corrosion to protect an engine
throughout its lifetime.
For any industry to survive
and thrive it needs to adapt
to market changes. The lubricants
industry is working
with vehicle manufacturers
to develop the right products
to meet these new market
conditions, as well as
maintain the supply of the
high-performance lubricants
needed for the vast majority
of petrol, diesel and hybrid
engines on our roads today.
The Verification of Lubricant
Specifications (VLS) is
an independent trade body
here to help technicians and
motorists understand the
changing world of lubricants
to ensure they make the right
choice for their vehicle.

Focus Battery Technology 30
12-volt battery
technology
As far back as 1859, the lead acid battery has proven to be an
integral component in almost every type of automotive vehicle
including hybrid and electric. Even though hybrid and electric
vehicles make use of lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride batteries
to store energy and propel the vehicle, the reliable 12-volt battery
is still utilised to power the vehicle’s 12-volt electrical system.
Here we take a look at 12-volt battery technology and the future
strategies being explored with technical experts from Autodata.
Consisting of
no moving parts
whatsoever inside,
the 12-volt
lead acid battery
encompasses six galvanic
cells, individually capable of
holding 2.1 volts. Each cell
incorporates a positive lead
dioxide coated plate and a
negative lead plate, divided
by a grid as well as an insulating
material called a
separator. The entire structure
is encapsulated in a
hard-plastic container filled
with a liquid solution known
as an electrolyte made up of
sulphuric acid and water. After
a charge greater than 2.1
volts is applied to each cell,
a chemical reaction inside
the battery is triggered, creating
electrical energy ready
for use.
Since the invention of the
lead acid battery, there has
scarcely been any noteworthy
upgrades in design. That
being said, in the mid-1970s
the progression was made
to the “maintenance-free”
or “sealed” lead acid battery.
Yet, calling the batteries
sealed strictly isn’t accurate
as, irrespective of terminology,
maintenance-free or
sealed batteries still include
safety vent valves that release
internal pressure in
overcharging or cell failure
situations. Precisely for this
reason, they are also referred
to as “valve regulated
lead acid (VRLA)” batteries.
What makes the VRLA battery
maintenance free - requiring
no topping up with
distilled water - is the chemical
reaction that occurs
when the oxygen formed on
the positive plate is combined
with the hydrogen given
off by the negative plate.
This synthesis between the
two compounds formulates
water that is recycled by the
battery, thereby making it
maintenance free.
So, without straying too
far from the chemistry of
the VRLA battery, the same
concept has advanced into
the gel and absorbed glass
mat (AGM) battery. Gel and
AGM batteries are still categorised
as sealed and valve
regulated batteries; nonetheless,
significant differences
between the two remain.
The gel battery’s acid is congealed
with silica to form a
thick liquid mass whereas
the AGM electrolyte is saturated
into a fibreglass meshlike
mat separator.
This innovative leap in
technology comes with many
advantages; both batteries
are practically maintenance
free, resistant to vibration,
have no free-floating liquid
that can leak and are safe to
be situated in limited ventilation
areas. However, because
the AGM battery can
deliver high demands in current
capacity and discharges
very slowly, it is the automotive
industry’s preferred
choice and frequently fitted
to the stop-start generation
of vehicles.
At this point, it is worth

noting that vehicles fitted
with battery monitoring systems
will require recalibration
every time the battery is
renewed. Battery monitoring
systems provide precise
information on the status of
the battery while taking into
consideration the effects of
battery aging. Values such
as current and battery data
must be reset using diagnostic
equipment. If this is
neglected, overcharging can
occur which causes the battery
to fail prematurely.

31 Focus Battery Technology
Caution is advised when
using external battery chargers
as VRLA batteries are
intended to be charged at
a low charge rate and at a
slow pace. Intelligent battery
chargers capable of
automatically regulating the
voltage and current should
be used to prevent damage
to the battery. If there is any
in battery technology continues.
The definitive objective
is to invent a battery capable
of storing large amounts of
electrical energy while requiring
a relatively short period
of time to fully recharge.
The following examples offer
a quick snapshot into some
of the new strategies and elements
being explored:
are thought to have a longer
lifespan and are also considered
cheaper to produce
than existing batteries.
• Silicon-based batteries
use silicon in lithium-ion
batteries. In so doing, the
charge capacity is increased
which results in a battery
that lasts considerably longer
between recharge times.
Silicon as a material is
abundantly available, which
also makes this a very viable
option.
• Fluoride-ion battery technology
claims to store up
still room for improvement
and the teachings of the past
indicate battery perfection
can be a slow and calculated
progression. Significant
advances in future battery
technology are unlikely to be
overnight and the industry
could expect timing of these
advances to run into multiple
years or even decades.

and usage, follow the

The automotive industry’s
search for the next evolution
• Solid state batteries replace
the electrolyte found
in current batteries with a
solid substance to enhance
energy mass. Because operating
temperatures are low,
any risk of fire or explosion
is reduced. These batteries
to ten times more energy
when compared to current
lithium-ion batteries. However,
currently fluoride-ion
batteries only work at high
temperatures so this temperature
limitation needs to
be addressed before this can
become a realistic solution.
Despite the 12-volt battery’s
matured age, there is

Van warranty sales increased by
almost half across RAC Dealer
Network in 2019, new figures show
Van warranty sales
increased by almost
half across the RAC
Dealer Network
in 2019, rising by
49.5% to 27,698, according
to figures released today.
Over the same period, the
number of specialist van
retailers who were part of
the network also jumped by
87.5% – from 40 to 75.
Sean Kent, RAC sales director
at Assurant, the Fortune
500 company which
partners with the RAC in
providing and administering
warranties and related solutions,
explained that van
sales had been identified as
growing opportunity for the
RAC Dealer Network.
“We have been working
hard to recruit specialist
van dealers and help them to
build a used vehicle proposi-
tion that meets the needs of
their customers while positively
differentiating them
from their competitors, and
the new figures show this
strategy is delivering on
those requirements.
“Used van dealers and
their customers have quite
specific needs. If anything,
the warranty provided with a
used van is more important
than with a car – the owner
relies on their vehicle as
part of their work – and the
standard warranties offered
by dealers are often longer
on vans while the propensity
of customers to upgrade to
longer or more comprehensive
cover is also higher.
“We are finding that our
products, and the support
we offer in terms of marketing
and training, are working
very well when it comes
to helping van dealers to
maximise the potential of
their warranty offering,
protecting customers while
enhancing the opportunity
to grow their business. The
figures we are releasing underline
this.”
Part of the RAC Dealer
Network’s activity within the
van sector in 2019 was the
launch in September of a
new RAC Approved Dealer
standard for used vans and
other light commercial vehicles.
Sean said: “The new
standard is designed for van
dealers who want to take a
step further forward from
being a member of the RAC
Dealer Network and join our
Approved Dealer initiative,
which has operated very
successfully for used cars
for several years. It creates
a nationwide approved used
van programme commensurate
with the values of the
RAC brand, with all of the
benefits that brings for both
customers and retailers.
“It is very much a new kind
of proposition in this sector
where, outside of franchise
dealer networks, there are
few retailers with the kind
of consumer brand recognition
and product range that
the RAC can deliver. We’re
already seeing substantial
interest and success, and
we expect this programme to
have a further impact on the
the number of warranties
for vans we sell in 2020.”
Overall in 2019, including
used car dealers, the RAC
Dealer Network added 358
dealers for a total of 1,400
and overall warranty sales
increased by 6%.

Feature Simulating Car Sickness 34
Simulating
car
sickness
Carmakers are turning to
driver-in-the-loop simulators
to combat the effects of car
sickness as autonomy looms
Are you one of
those people that
feels a bit queasy
as a passenger or
does reading in
the car turn you green? If
you are, then the idea of an
autonomous vehicle might
not appeal to you. But fear
not because engineers are
hard at work on solutions to
make sure the prospect of a
ride in an autonomous car is
something to relish. The answer
to finding the solution
might surprise you…
It’s long been known that
some people experience
motion sickness in driving
simulators. Now, in an ironic
move, car makers, suppliers
and researchers are turning
to this technology as a means
of investigating and minimising
car sickness.
What makes us sick in the
car is something we have a
pretty good grasp on. Design
factors such as the vehicle’s
ride frequency, sound characteristics
and even outward
visibility (notice how you feel
better when you can see out
the window?) are all thought
to influence the onset and
severity of car sickness. Essentially,
so the boffins say,
it occurs as a result of when
motion is felt and not seen or
indeed, vice versa.
It’s important to find a solution
to avoiding sickness
when we are all passengers
as the car industry bets the
farm on autonomous driving.
A study by the University of
Michigan concluded that in
some regions up to 31 per
cent of adults are likely to
experience sickness in an
autonomous car. All those
millions of dollars developing
cars could be for nothing
if we can’t use them. That
study also identified activities
that are likely to worsen
car sickness. Unsurprisingly,
reading and texting came top
of the list, followed by working,
watching videos and
playing games – all of which
are plausible scenarios in the
context of an autonomous
car journey.
Historically, drivers in
simulators have suffered
with motion sickness for
exactly this reason. So, how
could be used to solve the
problem? First, it’s not every
type of simulator but one UK
company is claiming that the
simulators it manufacturers
are not only able to overcome
these issues but can
reproduce them on-demand
to support research. Any volunteers?
Driver-in-the-loop (DiL)
simulators offer a unique environment
for investigating
these effects. They provide
a repeatable controlled environment,
which can be used
day or night irrespective of
the weather conditions. Most
importantly, the interior layout,
NVH (noise vibration
and harshness) characteristics
and dynamics of car
can all be easily modified.
To make it possible, Ansible
Motion has taken a cleansheet
approach to simulator
34, 35 Simu Car Sickness .indd 1 25/02/2020 09:50

design and steered clear of
the hexapod type of design
(think of the simulators at
fairgrounds). Ansible Motion’s
response is a unique
‘stratiform’ motion platform
that is unlike any other and
simplifies the actuation requirements
by placing the
pod on a series of layers of
mechanisms. The first X-Y
stage provides lateral and
longitudinal movement,
while the table above generates
the yaw, pitch, roll and
Z-plane ‘bounce’ motions.
The system was first developed
for the motorsport industry,
where small, accurate
breakaway movements
are crucial in providing the
right cues to highly trained
drivers. It’s a field that Ansible
Motion still serves, with
numerous F1 teams among
its customers.
Level four autonomy, where
the driver isn’t required to
intervene in certain environments,
or level five autonomy,
where the car requires no human
intervention, – is where
this research could really
come into its own.
In an initial joint project
with VU University’s Faculty
of Behavioural and Movement
Sciences, TNO’s Department
of Perceptual and
Cognitive Systems and Coventry
University’s Centre for
Mobility & Transport, a bespoke
simulator laboratory
test protocol has been developed
to accurately reproduce
specific movements that are
known to induce feelings of
car sickness in vehicle occupants.
75% of participants
experienced varying degrees
of discomfort within five minutes
of beginning most tests,
highlighting the simulator
can be used to rapidly identify
and isolate specific sensory
disturbances that cause
car sickness.
The solutions to mitigate
sickness will be defined by
car makers but solutions
could come from injecting
sound into the cabin, changing
the shape of the windows
or developing suspension set
ups to reduce sway.
This problem may be some
way off, but Ansible Motion
says it’s already a frequent
topic of conversation with its
OEM customers as those first
few autonomous experiences
will form our opinions. And
as the car evolves it’s only going
to become more relevant.

Industry-wide discussions on EV finance needed
following 2035 announcement, says Startline
Industry-wide discussions
on used electric
vehicle finance are
needed following the
Government’s proclamation
on a 2035 deadline
for stopping petrol, diesel
and hybrid sales, says Startline
Motor Finance.
Major questions remain
around the funding of EVs
on the used market, said
CEO Paul Burgess, and the
announcement created a
new degree of impetus towards
resolving them.
“It’s fair to say that the
used car motor finance sector
has been aware of the
structural problems around
used EV funding for a while
but we believed that more
time was available to work
our way through them. The
new announcement moves
the point of action much
closer.
“Like most other motor
finance providers, we have
been looking at the challenges
around constructing
EV funding products. These
range from the fact that predicting
RVs remains much
more difficult than for petrol
and diesel cars through
to the question of the battery
as an asset.
“The current situation,
where there are very few
companies currently willing
to provide finance for
used EVs – and that even
some of those are having the
business underwritten by
manufacturers – illustrates
the difficulty of solving these
problems.”
Paul said that having a
properly functioning used
car market and accompanying
motor finance was essential
to the success of EVs in
the medium and long term.
“The Government announcement
means that,
within less than a generation,
we will all be EV drivers,
so finding viable finance
products is crucial but the
current models we use for
petrol, diesel and hybrid
don’t really work, at least at
the moment.
“Our view is that no single
motor finance company is
likely to solve this issue by
themselves and there needs
to be industrywide discussion
and co-operation in
order to deliver the required
innovations.”
It was certainly possible,
Paul added, that manufacturers
played a greater part
in the funding of used EVs
than had been seen in the
traditional motor finance
market.
“It’s been suggested that
manufacturers show their
faith in the product by underwriting
the battery while
motor finance companies
fund the car, and this is certainly
one option that could
help to create more affordable
products.
“However, there are any
number of potential solutions.
What the Government
has done with the 2035 announcement
is to make talking
about those possibilities
much more urgent.”
Based in Glasgow, Startline
specialises in a nearprime
approach to motor
finance and offers both HP
and PCP products. It now
employs 130 people and
works with around 50%
of the UK’s top 50 dealers
