Issue 291
March 2019
Hello
Welcome to this issue of The Garage.
Welcome to this issue of The Garage
Just when did a car become the
equivalent of the Albert Hall on the
last night of the Proms, or start doing
an impression of the local multiplex
cinema? It seems that in the
past decade or so a car’s occupants MUST
be entertained, no matter how long or short
the journey.
Whether it’s playing DVDs, offering firstclass
music and radio sound or even showing
us how to get there with a built-in satnav,
it would appear that today’s passengers have
an indescribably low boredom threshold
that must be dealt with as soon as the car
pulls of the drive.
Call me old-fashioned, but I just don’t get
it: My 2005 X-type has a perfectly good radio/CD
player but that clearly isn’t enough
for today’s drivers and their passengers. And
like it or not, with the rise of ‘connectivity’ – a
word I utterly despise, a car does more than
transport people, it keeps them in touch with
the outside world.
Yet is there too much entertainment, and
can that be a distraction for drivers? It’s a
pretty good point, and one that, in principle
at least, I’d go along with: Combine all that
entertainment with the feeling of security new
safety feature-laden cars offer, and there are
some grounds for concern. Once distracted,
the risk of an accident will always increase.
And that means a car will need the attention
of a bodyshop: This issue also looks at
bodyshops and how garages can be involved
in some smaller and lighter repairs. That’s
not to say garages should be bodyshops too
– far from it – but offering smart repairs and
wheel refurbishment is surely a useful extra
revenue stream that can be offered in a lowkey
way, which is surely beneficial to your
customers and your business.
Enjoy the issue!
NEWS 06
TOTAL ELECTRIFICATION
FOR HONDA BY 2025
HONDA took to the stage at Geneva to announce the
further acceleration of its electrification ambitions.
The company announced its intention to move
100 per cent of its European sales to electrified
powertrains by 2025. This new ambition builds on
the brand’s 2017 aim of two-thirds of its sales to be electrified
by 2025, and places it firmly at the forefront of Honda’s global
electrification shift announced as part of its 2030 vision.
Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President, Honda Motor Europe,
said, “…since we made that first pledge in March 2017, the
shift towards electrification has gathered pace considerably.
Environmental challenges continue to drive demand for
cleaner mobility. Technology marches on unrelenting and
people are starting to shift their view of the car itself.”
Further proof of Honda’s electrification ambition was seen
in the shape of the Honda e Prototype. Unveiled for the first
time at Geneva, the car previews Honda’s first production
battery electric vehicle for the European market. Positioned
as an urban commuter, the car features a competitive range
of over 200km and a ‘fast charge’ functionality providing 80%
range in just 30 minutes. It also features trademark Honda
driving dynamics with a sporty rear wheel drive configuration.
The production version of the Honda e Prototype will be
unveiled later this year. Customers can register for updates
on the Honda website now, and will be able to place a
reservation for the car in selected European markets in early
summer. To date Honda has received 15,000 registrations of
interest for the Honda e Prototype.
Gem Supports New “Think!” Campaign to Help New Drivers
ROAD SAFETY and breakdown organisation
GEM Motoring Assist today
gives its support to the latest ‘Think!’
campaign, which encourages new drivers
to ‘learn the ways of the road’ with
the assistance of a ‘Road Whisperer’.
The ‘Road Whisperer’ will offer tips
relating to some of the more challenging
situations new drivers face, including
roundabouts, motorways, country
lanes, and in poor weather. There will
also be advice on looking out for vulnerable
road users and checking tyres.
GEM road safety officer Neil Worth
commented: “There are many reasons
why new drivers are at greater risk on
road journeys. We know that the combination
of over-confidence and inexperience
is particularly lethal, with 20 per
cent of drivers involved in a collision
within six months of passing the test.
“Think of the learning process. Even
though the testing system has developed
in recent years, it’s still impossible
to give a new driver the wisdom and
experience that’s vital for staying safe
on our roads, just from a few hours at
the wheel with an instructor, plus some
Highway Code learning.
“We welcome and support the new
‘Think!’ initiative, which presents the
facts and the risks in an accessible and
non-preachy way. We hope it will play a
key role in reducing the unacceptably
high number of collisions, injuries and
deaths among new drivers.”
The campaign is due to run throughout
March across cinemas, video on
demand and social media.
REPXPERT members hail ‘professional’
Schaeffler, following latest LuK double
clutch system training course
TECHNICIANS have
described one of the
most recent LuK dry
double clutch system
courses as ‘absolutely
fantastic’, following a number
of professional presentations
and demonstrations at
the REPXPERT Academy in
Hereford.
Schaeffler REPXPERT
Alistair Mason welcomed a
dozen members, all of whom
were thirsty to learn more
about the LuK 2CT repair solution
for double clutch systems
and eager to complete
the day confident in being
able to handle similar work
when it arrives at their workshops.
Alistair delivered a thorough
overview of LuK double
clutch technology – operation,
installation, diagnosis,
tooling and replacement, using
different LuK 2CT repair
solutions – with feedback
from the event overwhelmingly
positive, summed up
by Northway Auto Services
Managing Director, Richard
Williams:
“It was absolutely fantastic!”
he declared. “It was a
professional and informative
experience; Alistair kept
things simple but explained
technical practices to technical
people.
“Without the course, we
wouldn’t be able to work out
certain fault codes, for example,
so this means we’re now
more confident in taking on
double clutch work. It also
means we will only order and
fit LuK clutches.”
The number of REPXPERT
users signing-up for live training
is growing fast, whether it
be at a REPXPERT Academy,
or Alistair visiting technicians
at their premises in one of the
REPXPERT training vans.
Schaeffler urges technicians
to get in touch, as spaces
and schedules are being
booked up quickly; the company
is delighted that REPX-
PERT members are seeking
support and accepting technical
assistance, which will
help ensure double clutch
repairs become part of their
workshop menu.
Adding this advanced new
skill to their repertoire is
rapidly becoming essential,
as the number of double
clutch-equipped vehicles increases.
REPXPERT members can
get instant and free access
to online and live training,
installation videos, technical
guides and Schaeffler
product-related TecRMI data.
They can also redeem bonus
points found in all LuK, INA
and FAG boxes against the
complete library of TecRMI
data, as well as promotional
items from the bonus shop.
of the industry is
putting extra demands on
parts brands, particularly
for those growing into new
sectors or rapidly increasing
their product portfolio,”
explained Shaun Greasley,
TecAlliance’s regional sales
director CEE/GB/IE.
“In order for us to help
them respond to these chal-
National garage
network Servicesure
has shortlisted
its ‘Autocentre
of the Year’
nominees, with this year’s
winner to be announced at
the eagerly anticipated ceremony
which takes place at
Coombe Abbey on 11 April.
Senior members of The
Parts Alliance will be in attendance
on the night to announce
the winning garage
from the seven finalists: A1
Motorist Centre, Chester
Auto Services, Gordons Garage,
Lowgate Garage Ltd, M
M Auto Services Ltd, Simon
Graeme Auto Service Centre
and Burntwood Auto Centre.
Commenting on his garage’s
nomination, Murdo
MacIntosh at M M Auto Services
said: “We have been
with Servicesure for over 6
years, and were the first users
of GS Onestop in Scotland.
“We try to use every element
of the Servicesure offering
and promote our association
with the brand
wherever possible, as it
definitely brings added credibility
and customer reassurance.”
Fellow nominee, Josh
Watts, Director at Burntwood
Auto Centre, commented:
“Being a Servicesure garage
has made us stand out from
the crowd in our local area.
“We can provide a great
range of services that others
simply can’t thanks to Servicesure,
making us more
attractive as a garage.
“It’s amazing for us to be
nominated for the Autocentre
of the Year as we are
just a small family business
who have only been up and
running for just over 12
months!”
Dean Spindler, Director at
family-owned Chester Auto
Services, also appreciates
the peace of mind that goes
hand-in-hand with Servicesure’s
National Warranty,
allowing the business “to
provide complete customer
satisfaction.”
Having been a member of
Servicesure for four years,
Adam Rogers, Director at A1
Motorist Centre, said: “We
like the idea that we are part
of a bigger group, so we can
offer nationwide warranty
whilst retaining our individual
identity.
“There are countless other
benefits too, such as training
for continuous professional
development for staff, access
to technical assistance and
customer finance deals that
would have been so much
more difficult to arrange
without their input.”
Lowgate Garage, Gordons
Garage and Simon Graeme
Auto Service Centre were
similarly delighted by their
nominations and eager to
praise the benefits of network
membership.
Servicesure says that
the ‘Autocentre of the Year’
awards are designed to shine
a light on the hard-working
and often under-appreciated
local garages within its national
network.
“It’s always a challenge to
narrow our network down to
just seven finalists, but it’s
an incredibly rewarding process
as these garages all absolutely
deserve recognition
for the great service that they
provide,” said Paul Dineen,
Head of Garage Programmes
at The Parts Alliance.
TecAlliance accelerates its update cycles
lenges, we have examined
our systems and opened the
door to accelerate our information
update cycles to
provide a competitive and
up-to-date solution that allows
them to compete even
more effectively, in today’s
fast changing business environment.
“In addition to these obvious
benefits, which help
users as well as suppliers,
the development also allows
suppliers to quickly correct
data errors and therefore
significantly raises the overall
quality of the data held
within the TecDoc catalogue.
“Although we believe the
project will bring benefits for
all interested parties, we also
wish to make clear the option
remains voluntary and
we will obviously not force
our customers to undertake
weekly updates if that doesn’t
suit their needs.
“To put minds at rest, there
is no additional charge for
either data suppliers or data
users, who currently receive
updates monthly and no extra
tools are required to use
the TecAlliance platform,
they can still use the DMM,
the web service and TAF 2.4
data structure, as usual.
“The project starts at the
beginning of April, so we’d
like to invite data suppliers
to register their interest by
sending notification of their
brand/s with the relevant
Shaun Greasley, TecAlliance’s regional
sales director CEE/GB/IE
contact details, while we also
encourage data users to let
us know if it is their intention
to use the weekly updates.”
and replacements to Hertz
UK, one of the country’s
leading vehicle hire providers,
with locations throughout
the entire nation.
The partnership will position
Autoglass® as the first
entire Hertz UK fleet.
Autoglass® was confirmed
as the preferred supplier following
a competitive tender
process, during which it impressed
with a commitment
to significantly reduce vehicle
downtime and the provision
of a one-stop-shop solution
for Advanced Driver
Assistance Systems (ADAS).
This model allows Autoglass®
to perform ADAS recalibration
at a designated
Hertz location or one of the
70 centres operated by Autoglass®
around the UK.
In addition to the reduction
in vehicle downtime, the
decision made by Hertz to
select Autoglass® was linked
to several other components
in the tender response, including
access to the unique
business support team who
centrally manage the day-today
requirements, providing
greater consistency, appointment
tracking and improved
communication.
Autoglass® is an industry
leader in safety and champions
the role that ADAS
technology plays in improving
driver safety. This partnership
is an opportunity
for both businesses to drive
the innovation agenda in the
fleet and VGRR industries –
with Hertz benefitting from a
range of added-value services
provided by Autoglass®.
Jeremy Rochfort – National
Sales Manager, Autoglass®
says:
“It’s great to have started
the year on such a positive
note with a company as established
and respected as
Hertz. Securing this primary
supplier contract is testament
to the market leading
service provided by our
team. We are confident that
this is the just starting point
for yet another year of success
for Autoglass®.”
Richard Davies – GM,
Hertz UK, added:
“With a fleet as vast and diverse
as ours, it is of the utmost
importance that vehicle
downtime is minimised.
The significant reduction in
vehicle downtime offered by
Autoglass® was a prominent
factor in our decision to select
them as our primary
supplier for vehicle glass.”
FOR UK OPERATION
Major boost for area as Nottingham facility
to lead engineering development
Standard Motor Products
Europe (SMPE) has announced
investment plans
for its UK facility with the
aim of positioning it as the
European Centre of Excellence
for engineering.
The engine management
specialist is currently recruiting
engineers for its
Nottingham site, which has
recently benefited from investment
in new workshop
facilities and engineering
equipment to aid rapid prototyping
of products.
Furthermore, SMPE’s
operations in Europe have
continued to evolve. The
company boasts a new production
facility in Poland to
meet the increased demand
from mainland European
customers and this again
will be supported by the
UK’s centre of excellence for
engineering.
Richard Morley, SMPE
Commercial Director, said:
“We’re delighted to bring this
good news story to the automotive
trade and local area.
Our headquarters in Nottingham
will take the lead
in customer service, warehousing,
finance, marketing
and sales, but will also focus
heavily on product engineering
and development, making
it our European Centre
of Excellence. It will also
have the additional benefit
of being able to manufacture
new to range items and be
first to market.”
“Supported by our operation
in Torun, Poland, which
services a large proportion
of customers in mainland
Europe, we are now perfectly
positioned to expand our
engineering and production
footprint, for the benefit of
all our customers.”
ELTA BLAZES THE TRAIL!
Although developments in halogen bulb
technology do not move as quickly as they
do with other product groups, such as
engine management, it’s still important
for workshops to be aware that there are
numerous references that are poised to become far
more prominent in the aftermarket and they need to be
ready for the change.
To help workshops smoothly adapt to the transition,
ELTA Automotive Ltd, through both its popular
VISIONPRO – vehicle vision and safety related product
range – and globally recognised Lucas brands, has
compiled a ‘trailblazer’ series of references, which
allows them to add the correct bulbs to their stock, to
ensure they maximise the opportunity these new bulbs
provide.
Utilising its stock management expertise, ELTA has
put in the groundwork and produced a 24-part guide
that features the up and coming bulbs, based on the UK
vehicle parc, to ensure workshops are equipped with
the correct bulbs to reflect the parts pareto.
ELTA has seen a notable rise in demand for globe
type signalling bulbs such as the HPC16WY, the wing
mirror mounted indicator lamp for the ultra-popular
Mercedes Sprinter. Not only are these bulbs positioned
in a somewhat vulnerable area, the vehicles they
are fitted to are now at an age where they are more
commonly serviced in the aftermarket.
Many of the references are unusual in terms of their
base and connectors, which are increasingly different
to traditional standards. The series highlights the H18
and H19 next generation halogen headlight bulbs that
fit the Ford Ecosport and KIA Forte (the new Cee’d) for
example, are brand new. Early adopters will want to
stay ahead of the game by introducing these to their
range now.
There have also been developments in the world
of HID (high intensity discharge) Xenon lamps. 25w
Xenons were first fitted to cars in 2013 and so these
models are now entering the aftermarket for service
and repair. Designed specifically for smaller cars, the
unusual shaped 12v 35w D5S (Citroën C4 Picasso,
Skoda Rapid), which integrates both a ballast and
starter, and the new 40v 35w D8S (Audi A1) are sure to
see a rise in demand throughout the aftermarket this
year.
Vredestein’s premium SUV
range fulfils segment trends
European premium tyre manufacturer Vredestein continues
to be perfectly aligned to fulfil UK market demand for
ultra-high performance SUV tyres as highlighted by GfK
Panelmarket’s latest analysis (2018 vs 2017).
Specifically, in a segment which shows a 15% and 10%
growth in value and volume respectively[1], Vredestein’s
premium range benefits from a trend which continues to
provide a dominant share of premium brands over budget and
mid-range tyres.
“GfK data show that 47% of 4x4/SUV tyre demand is fulfilled
by premium products, highlighting a consumer preference
that has assisted Vredestein’s growth in recent years,” says
Karl Naylor, Apollo Vredestein UK Country Manager. “More
significant still is the product mix growth, where the ultra-high
performance SUV sub-segment (diameters of 17” and above)
has grown even faster, 19% in value and 14% in volume.”[1]
Additionally, a previous GfK report in 2018 showed the
SUV tyre market is where all-season tyre sales are growing
at their fastest, with an increase of 15% in a 12-month period
(July to June, 2017 v 2018)[2]. This, too, is reflected and even
surpassed in Vredestein’s own product mix, which continues
to show a clear rising demand for all-season tyres within the
most popular UHP SUV sizes.
“That’s where Vredestein has traditionally had a strong
offering; we have been investing in the development of allseason
tyres for over two decades and have offered all-season
in SUV sizes long before most of our rivals. The GfK research
confirms and supports trends which are in line with Apollo
Vredestein’s continued growth strategy and plans,” concludes
Naylor.
AUTOTECH RECRUIT TO PROMOTE ‘FIX
FIRST TIME’ MENTALITY WITH EXCLUSIVE
ZF AFTERMARKET TRAINING DEAL
TO COUNTERACT
the ongoing skills
shortage within the
automotive industry,
and meet the
growing demand from UK
garages for highly skilled
technicians, Autotech Recruit
has launched an exclusive
alliance with ZF Aftermarket
Technical Training
– in a bid to give ALL vehicle
technicians access to indepth,
technical courses.
The move further cements
Autotech Recruit’s position
within the automotive recruitment
sector as a leading
organisation for training and
development, in the overriding
drive to reduce the skills
gap. As a recruitment company,
solely dedicated to the
industry, Autotech Recruit
already offers many training
options, including MOT
training, however this new
alliance will provide much
needed technical training on
key vehicle components.
Courses will cover extensive
training on key vehicle
parts, including transmission
systems, steering, suspension,
driveline components
and on electric and
hybrid vehicles - meeting
growing calls for skilled
technicians to service electric
vehicles and cars which
are becoming increasingly
complex.
“Garages are under pressure
from rapid advances in
technology, and, whilst we
still need to focus on bringing
in new talent, it is essential
that the current workforce
is trained sufficiently,” comments
Gavin White, managing
director of Autotech
Recruit. “Through our close
connections with the industry,
we recognise the exact
needs of both garage owners
and vehicle technicians
today and it has become increasingly
apparent that we
need to provide training on
specific vehicle components
to give technicians a greater
level of understanding. We
need to build a fix first time
mentality.”
“As vehicles evolve, the automotive
aftermarket needs
to evolve with them,” adds
Mandla Ndhlovu, Head of
Training at Autotech Recruit.
“I am excited by the
partnership with ZF Aftermarket
Technical Training,
which will enable us to offer
this high quality of training
the automotive industry desperately
needs. It will give
garages an opportunity to
equip their technicians with
the skills, knowledge and attributes
needed to be able to
successfully maintain and
repair the vehicles of today
and the more technologically
advanced vehicles of the
future.”
A leading supplier of automotive
OEM parts, ZF Aftermarket
UK offers one of the
industry’s most comprehensive
range of training
programmes.
Both parties, who
are members of the Independent
Automotive
Aftermarket Federation
(IAAF) share the philosophy
that upskilling and
better training provisions
will help towards reducing
the skills gap.
The wait is over 56 Cabin3Tech+ references are now available!
Cabin3Tech+, the innovative cabin air filter launched by Sogefi
(CIR Group) at last year’s Automechanika Frankfurt, is available
for order from our aftermarket brands – Purflux and FRAM®.
56 new references are available, which cover over 150
million cars around Europe, including leading brands such
as Peugeot, DS, Toyota, Renault, Fiat, Volkswagen, and many
more!
Cabin3Tech+ is the latest Sogefi Group innovation made
for you and your vehicle, combining the very best in cabin
filtration technology for your protection! It efficiently filters
larger particles (like a pollen filter), neutralizes odours and
hazardous fumes (as an activated carbon filter) and stops up to
98.8% of fine particles as small as 2.5 microns.
Regularly replacing the cabin air filter is necessary for the
well-being of all occupants who travel within the vehicle. With
this innovation, Sogefi and its Purflux and Fram® brands,
together with distributors and garages, contribute to improve
your health.
It is important to change the cabin air filter annually or
every 15.000 km (max), not only to maintain a high-level of air
quality inside the vehicle, but also to ensure that the ventilation
system functions properly – a clogged filter can hinder the
ventilation system causing fogging and decreasing visibility on
the windscreen.
IGA to Launch Extensive Advertising Campaign
The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is launching
an extensive TV campaign for the Trust My Garage (TMG)
Code of Practice to drive customers to its independent garage
members.
The campaign will commence in March and run for at least
one year across a wide selection of TV and social media
channels. The advert uses a real TMG garage to demonstrate
the high quality outlets that are representative of the
independent sector of today.
Stuart James, IGA Director comments: “In the past year our
research into garage work providers has led us to believe that
these types of businesses will have a significant long-term
detrimental impact on independent garages. This campaign
has been driven by our members who have been expressing
concerns about consumer work provision for some time.
“Trust My Garage supports and enhances a garages own
Apollo Vredestein
steps up its OE
activities in Europe
brand identity and does not sit between the garage and its
customers, unlike third-party work providers. The Trust My
Garage Code of Practice does not charge its members or their
customers for this service – it’s a Government backed code
for independent garages and a benefit of IGA membership
that does not take a skim”.
The TMG Code of Practice is approved by the Chartered
Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) and has over 2,900
members registered. Each new member undergoes a
rigorous site audit to demonstrate that it has reached the
standards set by the IGA. Once passed, it may display the
TMG shield as a badge of quality. This provides consumers
with a high level of confidence in a market place where there
are so many conflicting garage schemes.
of Apollo Tyres. “We are doing
the groundwork to become a
strategic long-term partner
for all the OEMs in Europe,
as we have been doing in India
for over 10 years. Choosing a
member of the management
board of Pedro’s experience
and calibre, to lead Apollo
Vredestein’s OE strategy and
sales in Europe, is a clear signal
that we are taking our OE
journey in Europe very seriously
at the top of our organisation.”
Benoit Rivallant, president
of Apollo Vredestein, agrees:
“Being seen as a key player
by European OEMs is one of
Apollo Vredestein’s strategic
goals. With Pedro taking the
lead in terms of OE in Europe,
we are laying the right
foundations for the long-term
success of our OE endeavours
in this part of the world.”
Technical solutions for now
and the future
Hella Gutmann Solutions (HGS) open
their doors to the UK aftermarket press
The Hella Gutmann
Solutions (HGS)
production facility
in Ihringen and
technical call centre
in Breisach, both situated in
southwest Germany, recently
opened their doors for the
UK aftermarket press in order
to give them an insight of
just what goes into its comprehensive
range of diagnostic
tools and advanced driver
assist systems (ADAS)
calibration equipment, to
make them the market-leading
products they are.
After providing a brief company
history of how the original,
independent Gutmann
business, which introduced
its first commercial diagnostic
tools in 1983, came to be
a wholly-owned part of the
HELLA family, Managing Director,
Rolf Hunold got to the
heart of the proceedings by
addressing its dual activities
in terms of repair and mobility
solutions. The repair element
encompasses the here
and now of what makes HGS
the diagnostic and calibration
pioneer it is, whereas
the mobility constituent is
geared to future trends, tackling
issues such as connectivity
and data analysis via
the cloud. An area we shall
return to shortly.
Focusing in on repair solutions,
which is what is of
immediate interest to the
typical independent workshop,
Frederic Ernis, head
of business development
for UK, Ireland, France and
Benelux, explained in greater
detail the depth of the multibrand
diagnostic range and
complexities behind its development.
Although the capability of
the tool increases with each
step up in the range, from the
entry level mega macs 42SE,
to the recently launched
mega macs 77, the core diagnostic
data remains consistent
across them all and this
is the first element that really
sets HGS apart.
Whereas in 1990 Gutmann
diagnostic tools covered just
six vehicle manufacturers
(VMs), HGS tools now cater
for 43, which relates to
more than 40,000 models
and in excess of 1.7 million
fault codes – all of which
have to be traced back to
their source by the company’s
in-house workshop
facilities, sophisticated mapping
equipment and team
of highly experienced engineers.
The process can take
up to six months, but only by
analysing the minutiae of the
detail can HGS ensure that
its equipment provides the
market-leading accuracy on
which the independent service
sector can truly rely.
“Obviously, due to both
copyright issues and the
fact that it is encrypted, it is
not legal to simply copy VM
data,” explained Neil Hilton,
head of business development
for HELLA UK, “but, as
an extra level of protection, it
also includes false codes, so
the process of re-engineering
the data for our equipment,
is clearly highly complex.”
“However, an indication
of the company’s ability to
successfully overcome these
challenges is the fact that
HGS now has more than
40,000 workshop customers.
In addition, the investment
made to develop our
data is mirrored by the resources
we put into our support
services, which ensure
our customers can access
a real-time solution to any
problem that they are unable
to rectify directly from their
mega macs device.”
This is made possible
through the HGS technical
call centre, where 54 specialists
between them answer
more than 2,000 enquiries
every day. Split into
brand specific departments,
these highly skilled engineers
– who have each been
recruited from VM dealer
workshops of the brands for
which they are responsible
and are required to return
to those dealerships for two
weeks every year to remain
fully up-to-date with the latest
developments – receive
the support questions either
from a ‘ticket’ generated and
sent directly from a mega
macs tool or via a telephone
enquiry.
“This diagnostic know-how
and technical ability was also
the impetus behind the development
of our ADAS camera
and radar calibration (CSC)
tool, which has now been on
the market for more than five
years and remains the benchmark
for ADAS recalibration
in the aftermarket, with by
far the most comprehensive
multi-brand coverage,” Hilton
continued.
“Despite the dramatic increase
in the number of ADAS
equipped vehicles – which
incidentally, are visiting the
independent workshop on a
daily basis – there is still a
worrying level of ignorance
in the aftermarket when it
comes to the need to recalibrate
these vehicles after
carrying out any mechanical
repair that affects its geometry.
So that’s anything from
a simple tracking adjustment
to any steering and suspension
component replacement,
as well as changing its
wheel/tyre combination!
“What the independent
workshop also needs to appreciate
is that after undertaking
this work, the responsibility
to ensure that the
vehicle’s ADAS equipment
is functioning correctly does
not lie with the motorist, who
may or may not know the vehicle
is equipped with these
systems, or the VM that originally
incorporated them,
but with the workshop that
worked on the vehicle. When
this penny drops, workshops
will have to invest in an aftermarket
solution of which the
HGS CSC tool is clearly the
most refined.”
Finally, returning to Rolf’s
comments concerning mobility
solutions, HGS has already
begun trials of a new
device, which will provide the
independent sector with an
effective means to remotely
communicate with their customer’s
vehicles in a way that
previously only selected VMs
have been able to achieve.
Once plugged into the vehicle’s
OBD interface, the Car-
Force dongle can telematically
communicate with the
workshop and provide data
from which they can proactively
contact their customer
and make them aware of
potential issues such as low
tyre pressure, the need to
change the oil or battery, or
to refill the AdBlue for example,
so allowing the driver to
take the necessary measures
before the problem escalates.
“Although this is still in trials,
this initiative provides
the independent with realistic
access to the next generation
of vehicles and combined
with its current mega
macs and CSC tool repair
solutions, makes HGS the
technical partner of choice
for both the present and the
future,” Hilton concluded.
really stand on the grid. Its
launch has captured everyone’s
attention, and it is already
proving very popular.
We wish Matt, Dan and the
team all the best for the new
season and we can’t wait to
join them in celebrating more
success on track.”
The team will continue
development and testing in
preparation for the season
News 28
EU Emissions Tighten on UK Market
Emissions are a hot
topic for discussion
at the moment for
many media outlets
and manufacturers.
All efforts are geared towards
reducing emissions,
as well as preventing the
sale and fitting of catalytic
converters and DPFs to vehicles
that haven’t been approved
to meet the relevant
Euro Levels.
Vehicles and replacement
emission control devices
must meet specific standards
for exhaust emissions
before they can be offered
for sale in the European
Union. Automobile emissions
are one of a series
of performance standards
that must be met to achieve
Whole Vehicle Type Approval
in accordance with EC Directives.
In order to achieve
type approval on the emissions
levels for replacement
emission control devices
(catalytic converters and
diesel particulate filters),
performance and noise levels
must be within calculated
limits as prescribed
by legislation. Replacement
catalytic converters and Diesel
Particulate Filters (DPFs)
cannot be approved to a
lower Euro level than that
of the original vehicle; so,
if the vehicle is Euro 5 then
the replacement must be
approved to Euro 5 levels.
Testing and approving this
part to Euro 4 would mean
that it cannot be proven to
meet emission standards
and therefore cannot legally
be fitted to any Euro 5 vehicle.
Helping to identify the correct
emissions products for
stockists and garage professionals
is the tricky part but
thankfully there are some
improvements in the latest
version of MAM to make it
easier. Used by the majority
of distributors, the supply
chain software received a V9
update last October, which
maps the Euro level that a
supplier’s part is approved
for sale on against a vehicle
registration number. This
new feature is crucial, as it
removes parts from the exact
match search that were
previously incorrectly listed
as homologated for certain
Euro levels. For example,
I’ve seen popular catalysts
previously linked to Euro
5 vehicles as exact matches
when they are only legally
approved for sale to Euro
3 levels - but there are no
Euro 3 vehicles for those
catalyst fitments! V9 doesn’t
show them as exact matches
anymore which means the
chances of fitting the incorrect
parts are now vastly reduced.
With this change in place,
we’re now starting to see the
correct catalytic converters
and DPFs matched against
By BM Catalysts’
commercial director
Mark Blinston
the correct vehicles for the
first time, helping to boost
sales for distributors that
are selling parts that are
appropriately homologated.
While there are still further
improvements I’d like to
see added to MAM, such as
changes to cross referencing
systems (where one supplier
does not cover all the applications
that another brand
does), it is a positive move
and the first in a long journey
of improving compliance in
the emissions industry. Additionally,
the Department
for Transport (DFT) is also
helping to clarify the rules
for the UK market, with recent
guidelines reiterating
the strict requirements for
selling catalytic converters
and DPFs to the UK.
But while the correct cataloguing
of aftermarket parts
is complex and challenging,
perhaps the biggest shake
up to the emissions market
is the latest MOT changes.
The result of an EU directive,
new regulations were
introduced to the MOT test
last May, placing further emphasis
on diesel emissions.
The regulations require
checks to the exhaust for visible
smoke production and
tampering or removal of the
DPF. Any visible sign of alteration
to the DPF or smoke of
any colour will result in a fail
for the vehicle. Prior to these
tighter regulations, experts
warned that the true figure
of vehicles driving without
DPFs were in the thousands,
leaving many car owners at
risk of hefty fines and penalty
points.
BM Catalysts acknowledges
the need for up to date information
on EU levels. As
a leading manufacturer in
Europe, we recognise we are
a big part in meeting these
standards, producing superior
aftermarket products
with the least harm to the
environment. Additionally,
we have recently produced
free educational material on
DPFs and the MOT changes
to help our customers make
informed motoring decisions.
BM Catalysts produce catalytic
converters and DPFs
to high standards, yet to
create a lasting change to the
market, it is important that
all hands along the supply
chain, even the consumer,
does their part to make sure
they’re complying to regulations.
If one link is in this
chain proves weak, we all
fail.
BM Catalysts is the largest
independent manufacturer
of high-quality aftermarket
catalytic converters, DPFs
and front pipes in Europe.
FLEX FUEL HAS
THE ANSWER
JUST SHY of 40m cars
on Britain’s roads
now face stricter MOT
testing as a result of
the new changes introduced
by the DVSA earlier
this year. New diesel emission
checks will be required
to make sure vehicles meet
“plate standards”. If they fail,
the repair bill could run into
thousands of pounds, which
for some vehicles will be more
than the car is worth.
Most at risk are drivers of
any diesel car from around
2006 onwards – models that
came with a diesel particulate
filter (DPF) to clean up
its emissions. The cost of reinstating
a DPF (some drivers
and not so environmentally
conscious garages removed
DPFs altogether for performance
gains and because of
the expense of replacing) or
replacing a broken one can
often be more than the car’s
residual value.
When the DVSA set the
deadline of 20th May 2018 for
all MOT stations to upgrade
their emissions analysers to
meet the new EURO 6 emissions
standard, it created a
degree of panic on two fronts:
for drivers, the prospect of
expensive bills and for MOT
stations, are a genuine concern
as demand for new emission
analysers across Europe
is outstripping supply. But it
is not just a ‘hardware’ issue -
many testing stations are waiting
for calibration upgrades to
their existing analysers. And
calibration is not a one off,
it needs repeating every six
months.
Whilst a work around has
been agreed with the DVSA
- meaning MOT stations can
continue to carry out tests on
existing equipment so long
as they can prove they have
placed an order for replacement
equipment before the
deadline of September 2018!
Garages are duly concerned
about being compliant by law
and so now it’s imperative
that aftermarket solutions are
made available to them to ensure
MOT stations can meet
the obligations being imposed
upon them - for their own legality
but also out of service to
their customers.
Whether the September
deadline will be met and garages
will be equipped to
measure the new emission
standards remains to be seen;
but, gas analysis aside what
choices do garage owners and
consumers have to ensure vehicles
meet the new emission
standards?
What are those choices?
It is agreed by most in the
industry that carbon deposits
are responsible for multiple
engine problems; decreased
engine performance; increased
fuel consumption and
MoT emission test failures.
1 - Chemical clean: There
is a plethora of chemical
cleaning products available
to consumers and garage
owners, but they are
not without their own
environmental impact.
2 - Replace the parts, or
replace the car! Given most
cars affected by these new
changes will be from around
2006 onwards - the cost
of labour and replacement
parts might well outweigh the
residual value of the vehicle.
3- Hydrogen cleaning has
become an increasingly
attractive option for many
reasons. There are a range
of hydrogen cleaning
manufacturers - most
emanating from the far east;
others converting welding
machines to perform a
similar function. The former
suffer from low quality build
materials, and the rigidity,
integrity and longevity
required for a garage
environment. The latter, is
not specifically designed
for the job meaning the
volume of hydrogen
produced is limited
and total run time is
in the tens of hours -
again not ideal for the
demands of the UK
MOT sector.
This year, the UK welcomed
a new entrant
to the hydrogen engine
cleaning industry, FlexFuel
Energy Development
(FFED). Today, its distribution
network includes
more than 800 centers
in France, Belgium and the
United Kingdom.
FFED uses its HY-Carbon
solution - a hydrogen decarbonizing
process - to reduce
engine emissions and fuel
consumption and increase engine
performance. By injecting
hydrogen into the intake
manifold, carbon deposits are
eliminated from key engine
components responsible for
performance and emissions -
the admission valves, the EGR
valve, the turbo and the particle
filter.
An engine treated with HY-
Carbon technology reduces
Co2 and CO emissions by up
to 50%; and significantly reduces
NoX emissions by up
to 54%.
Availability
FlexFuel Units are available
now. The lease cost of the unit
is £299 per month and garages
only need to treat two
vehicles per month to cover
the cost of the lease - anything
thereafter is profit.
No consumables, no maintenance,
no labour makes
HY-Carbon one of the most
profitable machines in the
workshop with units available
within 15 days of order.
TELEMATICS WE’RE BETTER CONNECTED
The Garage brings you
the latest technology
that connects the cars of
tomorrow to everything
but the kitchen sink (for
now!) The future really is
upon us now.
ALEXA, Google
Home, Siri or Bixby.
Whether it’s in
our homes or on
our phones, voice
assistants such as these are
becoming a more convenient
way for us to find out sneaky
answers to the pub quiz, to
see if it’s going to be raining
tomorrow, or even tell us a
joke.
Voice assistants are growing
fast in the home because
they are so easy to use and
save us time. Some users
believe they do even more
than that. Would you also
believe that voice-activated
speakers can offer intellectual
stimulation and boost
personal fulfilment to their
users? Nearly 25 per cent
of users in a recent survey
credit their device with
helping them find greater
motivation to exercise, for
instance. So, if a voice assistant
can do that in your
home, what could it offer
in the car? Well, according
to the guys at HARMAN, experts
in all things infotainment,
a voice assistant such
as Alexa, but tailored to the
car, could soon become the
way you control not only
the car and its features but
an easy way to do an online
shop, change the thermostat
at home or book a haircut…
Voice control has been
around in cars for some time
but its effectiveness has,
until recently, been patchy.
Typically, voice recognition
wasn’t perfect, they lacked
intelligence and tended to
just respond to commands
such as ‘Tune to Radio 1’.
A major breakthrough in
30
Your next
assistant is
probably in
the car
performance came with the
MBUX unit in the A Class
Mercedes launched last year,
a project HARMAN which
played a major role in developing.
Other car makers
are following suit with BMW
launching its own version.
The Mercedes uses Artificial
Intelligence (AI), to
learn your preferences and
behaviours. For example, if
you always go a certain way
to work, it would learn that
and automatically plot it,
rather than just take what
it thinks you should. The
MBUX system can be controlled
by voice and because
the speech engine that analyses
the questions is not actually
in the car but offboard
in the cloud, the system is
more powerful and not limited
by hardware in the car.
When the driver speaks, the
voice recognition software
cross references the voice
command with a huge database
and compares it. It
then selects the command
that scored the highest
match and carries it out. For
the driver, it gives far greater
recognition accuracy, resulting
in better user experience
and a greater variety of commands.
HARMAN thinks that for
a lot of control functions in
the car, using voice is a simpler
way to change settings
and can be less distracting.
For one thing, you don’t have
to look at a display or take
your hands off the wheel to
ask the assistant to do something.
It can also be a more
natural way of controlling
30, 31, 32 Telematics.indd 1 11/03/2019 10:49

31 FOCUS Connected Cars
The MBUX unit makes voice
interaction with the car more
natural than ever before
HARMAN’s Fiat 500 can tell Alexa to order that last minute
birthday present and Google Home to turn the lights on when
you come home late from the workshop
Seeing what is in the fridge and getting it to order more milk
isn’t that far away….
functions. For example, instead
of setting the thermostat
to 25°C on a winter’s
day, it’s easier to say, “Hey
Mercedes, it’s too cold,” and
the car will change the temperature.
Mercedes has even
programmed the MBUX system
to have a few jokes; try
it if you get the chance to try
the new A Class. Drivers who
want to use voice assistants
in their cars but don’t have
the car’s inbuilt system may
find they have other options
to be able to use the technology.
They can also connect a
smartphone voice assistant
via Bluetooth, or use a thirdparty
assistant such as Siri,
via Apple CarPlay.
HARMAN thinks that voice
in the car can go much further
and recently created a
modified electric Fiat 500
to show how it the technology
could go much further.
HARMAN calls the new vehicle
personal assistant Intelligent
Reasoning Agent or
IRA, pronounced ‘Eye-Ra’.
With IRA, drivers simply ask
it to fulfil any type of personal
assistant command and it
will liaise with the appropriate
provider to get the task
done. For example, if a consumer
needs to purchase a
book from Amazon, IRA will
relay the command to Alexa.
If a driver wants the kitchen
lights turned on as they pull
onto the driveway, IRA will
tell Google Assistant to fulfil
the request. With HARMAN
owned by Samsung, the Fiat’s
voice assistant can control,
for the first time, those
other smart devices that we
are filling our homes with.
That might be your alarm,
doorbell, garage door or
fridge.
It’s not only in cars and the
home that the tech is coming
into our lives. HARMAN has
just announced a project
with MSC Cruises to have a
voice assistant called Zoe in
every cabin of the Bellissima
cruise ship that launches
this Spring. So, whether you
are on land or sea, be prepared
for a bit more intelligent
chat…..
Pioneering
the future
In-car entertainment has
taken a turn for the unexpected
since Smartphones
have assumed
the lead as the primary
source of audible and visual
entertainment in our everyday
lives. With the rise of
Spotify, Netflix, Waze, Tidal
and so many other media
streaming services, no longer
is in-car entertainment
simply about slotting a CD
or DVD into a slot anymore.
Nowadays the in-car entertainment
experience is based
largely around the thing that
you carry in your pocket everyday,
everywhere, and it’s
something Pioneer is more
than conscious of
The thing that increasingly
runs your life for you and
allows you to communicate
with the outside world, generally
on a global level all of
the time, is now an integral
part of the in-car experience.
That’s why Pioneer has harnessed
the power of connectivity
with its latest range of
head units, Sat Nav systems
and even the current range of
amplifiers and speakers to a
certain extent.
The 2018 range from Pioneer
represents a huge leap
forward in terms of connectivity,
but don’t go thinking it
has compromised on sound
quality, or the abundance of
features that we all know and
love from the past. There is
still a huge variety of options
to choose from, which is
handy because the modified
and classic car market continues
to offer so many variations
of dashboard shape and
size, that Pioneer caters for
everything from 1950s right
up to the present day. Hence
the mixed bag of products
that we’re going to talk about
here, from single DIN, largely
Smartphone powered head
units, through CarPlay specific
head units to the very latest
in Satellite Navigation and
high-end connectivity in the
form of the AVIC-Z910DAB,
there’s sure to be something
to suit your dashboard, your
budget, or offer upgrade potential
to your existing speakers
and amplifier setup. Ease
of use is also key to all Pioneer
products, so there’s no
need to fumble around looking
for impossible to select
options on the touchscreens
shown here.
As we know, most manufacturers,
perhaps until very
recently, never really bothered
lavishing much time
or expense upon the factory
ICE setups, and you’ll be surprised
how easily you can improve
sound quality in your
vehicle just by following a few
simple steps.
1. Sound Deadening – ensure
your doors (or any resonant
panels for that matter) are
nicely sound deadened using
any number of foil backed,
adhesive insulating type
products – seal that sound in
and keep the outside world at
bay for additional volume and
clarity. Everyone whittles on
about sound deadening but
it really does make a difference.
Check out Silent Coat
and Dynamat for starters.
2. Sealed speaker pods –
door speakers can often be
made to sound far superior
when solidly mounted and
given the right sort of air to
breathe. Using treated MDF
pods often results in an instant
sound upgrade instead
of the cheap plastic cones
most manufacturers rely
upon to keep costs down.
3.Tweeter mounts – Many
people now opt for A-pillar
builds in order to mount the
tweeter and midrange driver
of a two-way setup on axis
and as close to ear height as
possible – one of the golden
rules of domestic Hi Fi apparently.
This should elevate
the soundstage and
make it appear as though
voices are coming from the
dash, rather than from next
to your knees. A little bit of
glassfibre, MDF and hot glue
may be required to get the
angles just so for maximum
effect.
These three relatively simple
install tasks could elevate
your sonic signature with
ease, but what of the products
to make your car sing?
Here we go, hold tight, let’s
make some noise.
DON’T UNDERESTIMATE
THE IMPORTANCE OF . . .
THE make-up of new
cars is greatly different
from their predecessors
– the move
towards greater
fuel economy has called for
weight-shedding and, as result,
how a car is put together
is poles apart even from
those of the late-1980s/early
1990s.
And alongside how a car
is ‘bolted together’ there are
other issues to consider –
paint is a case in point, being
more environmentally
friendly than it used to be.
All those changes add up to
more expenditure for any garage
or bodyshop wanting to
work on the latest cars.
“Infrastructure spending
is growing for bodyshops.
Separate working areas are
required to avoid cross-contamination
when working
with aluminium and steel
Specialist welding and joining
equipment is also essential,
as are IT and repair
diagnostics tools,” says Euro
Car Parts’ marketing director
Helen Robinson.
“Scanning tools are also
becoming the norm. Postaccident
pre-repair scans,
coupled with post-repair prereturn
to customer scans
provide peace of mind not
only to the driver but also
the assembler and work provider.
Bodyshops are keen
to invest in the tools and the
space required to complete
scans effectively. Electric
and autonomous vehicles, although
not mainstream yet,
also bring a requirement for
Much like everthing else the aesthetics of a car are
ever evolving, from the paint to the nuts and bolts,
can mean for your garage.
new tools, methods and crucially,
training.”
Ask anyone who works in
a bodyshop what is the most
essential part of its operation,
and that is speed. The
need for a next-to-none turnaround
means bodyshop
technicians need products
that not only do a high-quality
job, but are quick too.
Autoglym, the bodyshop
and consumer-orientated refinishing,
detailing and valeting
products supplier recognises
those demands, saying
“Autoglym has become the
acknowledged authority at
designing and manufacturing
bodyshop products that
not only perform faultlessly
in performance terms, but
also tick that other utterly
essential box; they’re fast.
“When you’re on that allimportant
insurance company
hourly rate, it’s all about
getting that flawless finish
in the minimum amount of
time. With every product being
100 percent silicone-free,
there’s also no danger of
cross contamination, either!”
“Saving time is the thought
behind Autoglym’s Rapid
Renovator Plus, which gives
cutting, correcting and
mopping with one product.
Rapid Renovator Plus quickly
brings up the final finish
ready state, removing any
defects, in a quick and easy
action that, in most cases,
won’t require any further finishing,”
the company says.
Also available is a Super
Adhesive Remover, which
tackles the fixing agents used
when a van has been signwritten.
Autoglym says it
breaks down adhesive bonds
and cuts through residue but
without touching paint and
trim surfaces.
Once the repair is completed
bodyshops need a car
to look as smart as possible,
and Autoglym’s Silicone Free
Sheen cleans, conditions and
protects all interior and exterior
rubber and plastic. It
can be used on wet or dry
surfaces.
While it’s easy to think
that the vast majority of
cars are now white, which
in turn replaced metallic silvers
and greys, plenty of new
car buyers adopt for a more
imaginative colour choice.
But while it looks good in
the showroom and parked
on the driveway, when it
comes to being repaired the
bodyshop can be presented
with a problem or two.
Even today the principle
of colour matching can be a
problem, but those potential
woes can be a thing of the
past with tools such as Hella’s
spectrophotometer. Seeing
the light of day 10 years
ago, the early versions were
difficult to use and were not
accurate enough, meaning
cars could be re-painted in a
shade not exactly like the one
it left the factory with.
Today’s Hella Sonne spectrophotometer
uses the latest
technology to ensure a
colour match, meaning the
technician only has to polish
the panel before taking a colour
reading.
“The Sonne Vision Spectrophotometer
is something
not normally available in the
free to choose sector, but is a
bodyshop lifesaver in colour
identification and allows refinishers
to be able to accurately
provide a formulation
easily, efficiently and accurately,
ensuring a right first
time repair to every vehicle,”
says Steve Hudson, Sonne
head of business development.
“Sonne’s range comprises
high quality refinish paint
products and ancillaries,
that offer an ideal alternative
for refinish distributors
and repairers focusing on
performance, productivity
and efficiency. The Sonne Hidrosonne
Evo range of water
based paint consists of solid,
metallic, pearl and xirallic
toners, offering a palette in
excess of 70,000 colours,
with easy usage, high opacity
and excellent, fast drying
properties.”
“Sonne has a strong history
in Europe as an extremely
high quality, ‘free to choose’
and fully compliant refinish
brand. The extensive colour
database is regularly updated
as new colours from
the vehicle manufacturers
become available to the market.”
Bringing alloys up to scratch
ONCE A RARITY, many new cars are fitted with alloy wheels, but it only takes one close
encounter with a kerb to scuff them, and with that the whole car’s appearance isn’t quite
as good.
According to RAC Insurance figures supplied by Euro Car Parts, two-thirds of UK
motorists have suffered some kind of small-scale damage to their cars, with alloy wheels
being one of the most common victims.
But, says ECP, such light damage presents independent garages with a
good earning opportunity, especially for drivers whose cars are on PCPs.
“Euro Car Parts recently launched our new Intelligent Repair
Programme for repairers and bodyshops, enabling technicians to
complete minor body repairs in rapid time,” says ECP marketing
director Helen Robinson.
“Since then, the number of small businesses carrying
out intelligent repair work across the UK has grown; a
demand largely driven by rising insurance excesses.
Customers involved in a minor scrape are now looking to
the independent aftermarket to carry out small repairs and
managing the cost themselves, rather than paying a sizeable
insurance excess.
“Bringing together the vast stock range and availability of
Euro Car Parts and LKQ Coatings, along with the specialist
service and support provided by our Workshop Solutions
team, our Intelligent Repair Programme helps workshops
respond to this demand. The programme allows repairers to
access the latest equipment for wheel refurbishment, windscreen
and interior repair, cosmetic paint and paint-less dent work, in
addition to both static and mobile spray booths. IMI-accredited training
is also provided.”
time and look forward to further
enhancing and developing
PCL’s market-leading position,
with a strong emphasis
on making it even easier for
distributors to do business
with us.”
Founded in 1938, and celebrating
its 80th anniversary
breaking down the boundaries
over supply and price issues.
Welland will also assume
presidency of IAAF in two
years’ time, after Knox steps
down at the end of his term.
On his new appointment,
Knox said: ““I feel that the
past year has armed me with
invaluable insight into the tireless
activity of IAAF. Throughout
my term as president I
look forward to helping continue
its work, and will give my
all in promoting and securing
the future of the independent
aftermarket to the benefit of
our members and the sector.”
Welland added: “I’m delighted
to have more of an
active role within IAAF and
very much look forward to my
their contributions in helping
