Understanding and choosing words Word groups Focus Alphabetical order Definition Alphabetical order is a system used to arrange items so they can be easily found. Alphabetical order is used in many areas with which students are familiar. Example: the class register, in dictionaries, at the library, the index at the back of a reference book, telephone directories, map books Explanation • Initially, words are ordered by the first letter, then the second, third and so on until all words are in correct alphabetical order. Worksheet information • Prior to completing the sheet, show students examples of how alphabetical order is used in daily life. Example: street names in road books, names in telephone directories, indexes at the back of books • Ask the students to line up (girls and boys separately) in alphabetical order. If there are two or more students whose name begins with the same letter, explain the second, third etc. letter convention. • In Question 1, students arrange the savoury and sweet food in alphabetical order by first letter. • In Question 2, students arrange the girl and boy names in alphabetical order by first letter. • In Question 3, students arrange the animals on each line in alphabetical order by the second letter. Ideas for further practice • Make several lists of words for students to place in alphabetical order by first, second or third letter or a mixture of all three. Choose subjects that are of some interest to the students. Example: sports, TV programs, popular authors, local suburbs • Select words beginning with the same letter from the students’ dictionaries. Students arrange these words in order, then check their list by finding the words in the dictionary. • Students plan quiz questions about different continents, listing some countries, cities and physical features for the rest of the class to arrange in alphabetical order.
