Rapport 5894 – Inventering av provtagningsstrategier för jord, grundvatten och porgas
Summary
This project concerning strategies for sampling in contaminated soil, groundwater
and pore gas, has been carried out within the program “Hållbar Sanering” financed
by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The objective of this work has
been to make an inventory of existing guidances and methods for effective sampling
in different media. The work is presented in this report and in five background
reports. There is one background report for each media: soil, groundwater,
and pore gas. The unabridged version of these reports are presented in chapter 9, 10
and 11. The background reports give an overview of which strategies that are
available, but none have had the objective to be a guidance document for how
sampling should be carried out. The other two background reports present how
investigations have been carried out in Sweden and Denmark.
In the report concerning sampling strategies for soil, a summary is presented of
several sampling strategies and their pros and cons, and under which conditions
they are most suitable. Two relatively new strategies are presented: ranked set
sampling and adaptive cluster sampling. The strategies are primarily based on
American guidance documents produced for the US Environmental Protection
Agency USEPA.
In the report concerning sampling strategies for groundwater, different strategies
are presented related to the objective of the sampling. An inventory has been
made of a number of software for visualisation of the sampling results in 2D and
3D, and described regarding their pros and cons. The report, written in Danish,
describes the principal ideas of different strategies, and for details concerning e.g.
drilling and sampling methods, the reader is directed to Danish and Swedish
handbooks in the subject area.
Sampling of pore gas requires more modern techniques than does soil- and
groundwater sampling. The inventory shows that there are guidance documents on
how and with which methods pore gas sampling should carried out, but that
recommendations on sampling strategies for sampling of pore gas is missing, or are
of a more general character.
The other two background reports are inventories of how investigations have been
carried out within projects in Sweden and Denmark.
