Sleepy Scout
By Ger Hennessy
Not every Scout likes the challenge of
pioneering projects or signing-up to every
Free-Activity possible.12 year old Scout Evan
Douglas, from the Navan Road group in Dublin,
takes a more relaxed approach.
- My perfect camp would be one where I just
hop into my sleeping bag in my tent, lie back and
never wake up!
Whenever, and wherever, he is comfortable; he
has a habit of falling asleep.
- On camp, whenever Evan is unaccounted for,
we just assume he’s sleeping, his Patrol Leader,
Stephen (13) explains.
- But when he is awake, he does his work like
everyone else - even if he does look sleepy all the
time!
So is this a sign of medical condition?
- Well I don’t fall asleep in school or anywhere
else, it’s just on camp, admits Evan.
- It’s a camp thing, they make us get up so early!
Maybe he should just go to bed on time at night?
- He’s the first to bed at night and last to get up in
the morning, replies Stephen.
So do fellow Scouts not feel jealous that Evan
sleeps a lot?
- Well, we would wake him up, says 13 year old
Chucky.
- But he always looks really cheesed off when we
wake him up before he’s ready!
Chucky first realised that Evan had this habit at a
regional Scout competition last year
- After eating lunch, he went to sleep at the table
before we started washing the dishes.”
Sleeping a lot does cause some problems from
time to time.
- Evan lost his wallet on the bus on the journey to
the Jamboree, after falling asleep, Anne, his leader
says.
- I fell asleep while lying on a shoe yesterday,
admits Evan.
- Now I’ve got the impression of a shoe on my leg!
Scouting without Borders
By Søren B. Hansen
On Housing Estate day in Teltrup, a community of
Borderless Scouts from The Tønder Municipality
and South Schleswig West could be seen.
They had on this occasion taken off the uniform
and put on a T-shirt with the inscription:
‘Borderless Scouts’.
DDS and KFUM-Scouts in the Tønder municipality
of Denmark and DSS from Germany have unched
a movement called Borderless Scouts. An
obvious thought is: who are the potential
members.
-Actually, everyone can join. says
Annaline Kockparkhøi.
-It is normal for us to be open and responsive to
other people, says Ditte G. Ipsen.
- The Borderless idea gives us the courage to meet
Scouts from other countries, says Simone
Højgaard.
All three girls are from the DDS in Tønder.
The ‘Borderless’ philosophy also provides a Scout
from DDS in Skærbæk and one from the
YMCA-Scouts in Odense an opportunity to become
more than friends, they have chosen not to have
their names disclosed.
Another Borderless Scout phenomenon,
‘Free Hugs’, was started by Eli Karkov Bredvig from
YMCA-Scouts in Visby. Eli already had in mind
before she came to the Jamboree, that she
wanted to give more hugs to those who could
benefit from them - and who wouldn’t? She has
a sign on her stomach with the inscription: ‘Free
Hugs’ on one side and Danish equivalent on the
other.
common for many travellers, Evan has slept under
a bush, while relaxing in a swimming pool, and, a
few days ago, while hugging an English Scout in a
“FREE HUGS” t-shirt!
Sometimes, Evan misses out on the highlights of
camps. When his friends are getting life experience,
Evan is getting 40 winks.
- I try to stay awake for the big stuff, he says.
- I sat through the Opening Ceremony didn’t I?
- When asked if he enjoyed the fireworks, he said:
What fireworks?
A phenomenon that has spread across the
Jamboree.
It was also a scout from The Borderless Scouts who
was one of the quickest to find an foreigner in one
of Thursday's activities. Ester Thamsen, age 10,
from DSS was awarded a badge with the
inscription ‘Friends Forever’ for her achievement.
Scout Leader Hans Gundesen, from DDS, Agerskov
and his son, were on a walk in Holstebro when
an American Scout came towards them. The son
asked his father whether it was an American Scout
uniform, and, when his father did not respond
immediately, the American replied in fluent
Danish. “yes, it is an American Scout uniform”.
The Scout Leader and the Jutland / American scout
offered each other the left hand, for a traditional
Scout handshake.
The message of The Borderless Scouts can only
spread. When there is a Border between you and
others, give hugs! Remember that a Scout is a
friend to all, and a brother to his fellow Scouts and
Guides. Look at the person behind the Uniform, go
and get answers to your questions and strive to be
a part of The Borderless Scout movement.
