quality Midas brand treads lie “at the level of its European competitors;”
several tests have shown “no limitation in manufacture and
mileage” exists comparison with the said competitors. Apart from
the Hämmerling Group there are two further Midas importers – in
Finland and in Greece.
Against the background of the current economic situation, in
which the retreading market has shrunk 25 to 30 per cent and the
new replacement tyre market 30 to 40 per cent, it is extremely important
to have a product range that covers all market requirements,
Hämmerling continues. Yet even if demand now once again
recovers, it wouldn’t be possible to reach the level of turnover obtained
in the previous year. “The decline during the first six months
can no longer be compensated for.” And while the Hämmerling
Group managing director also senses “small positive signals”, he
indicates that a fundamental improvement in the situation may admittedly
not occur before the middle of next year.
In the previous months a large proportion of customers who
sell retreaded truck tyres have drastically reduced their stock levels.
Even well known chains now have only minimal stocks on
hand, which means that “truck customers in part – including those
using current sizes – cannot be catered for because there are no
products in stock,” explained Hämmerling. At the same time logistics
costs have increased dramatically, because the “number of
units that we send out in small quantities by haulier each day have

vermarkten, hat in den vergangenen Monaten ihre Lagerbestände
drastisch reduziert. Selbst namhafte Filialisten hätten nur noch Minimalbestände
vorrätig, was dazu führt, „dass die Lkw-Kunden
teilweise – auch mit aktuellen Größen – nicht bedient werden können,
weil keine Ware am Lager ist“, erläutert Hämmerling. Gleichzeitig
stiegen die Logistikkosten dramatisch an, da sich die „Stückzahlen,
die wir in Kleinstmengen täglich per Spedition versenden,
schlichtweg verdoppelt haben“.
