LOOK HARD. Fine, metal-laden particles from<br />
industrial sources in Hettstedt, Germany, are too<br />
diffuse to make the air hazy. When Environmental<br />
Protection Agency scientists collected and applied<br />
these particles to lung tissue from mice, however,<br />
they aggravated symptoms of asthma. Similar<br />
amounts of relatively metalfree dust had no such<br />
effect.<br />
