Committee and the German Arab Horse Society. Since
then, the show has always taken place at Aachen. From
1987 to 1992 every second year, alternating with the
European Championships, but since 1992 both events have
been held every year. And there is another anniversary:
since 1992, the Nations Cup is officially the “Lady
Harmsworth Blunt Memorial Trophy“, named for the
English breeder Margaret Lady Harmsworth-Blunt, who
died that year. It was her son Lord Rothermere who sponsored
the original Cup, then known as the Daily Mail
Challenge Cup. In 2001, another prize was added, the
Breeders Cup, to honour not only the most successful
exhibiting countries, but also the most successful breeding
countries. This challenge trophy, a bronze depicting a mare
and her newborn foal, is officially named „Major T.W.I.
Hedley Memorial Trophy“, in memory of the late husband
of Annette Hedley, whose idea the show originally was. She
herself is still active in the ANC Committee today.
To this day, horses from 17 exhibiting nations have won
ANC championships. Britain is still in the lead with 16
titles, followed by Germany with 15, Belgium with 14, and
Poland with 12 individual champion titles. But since the
nations ranking also takes into account reserve championships
and class wins and placings, the results for the
Nations Cup itself look a bit different.
10 nations have to date managed to win the covered silver
bowl. The most successful country is Poland with 6 wins,
followed very closely by Belgium and Britain with 5 wins
Netherlands and France with 2. Sweden, Qatar, and the
United Arab Emirates have each won the Cup once.
Countries that have won individual champion titles, but
never the Cup itself, are Australia, Argentina, Austria, Israel,
Italy, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia. However, Saudi Arabia
(and to some extent the Emirates) is at a disadvantage
because many of their horses are registered and domiciled
in Europe, which means their wins are counted for the
country they are registered in. Qatar, in 2002, was the first
Middle Eastern country to win the Cup, and the only Arab
country to win both the Nations Cup and the Breeders Cup
in one year.
