ANC - The first 30 years (text and photos by Betty Finke)
The Breeders Cup has to date been won by 5 countries,
with three countries sharing first place: Poland, Belgium,
and the USA have each won 3 times. Qatar and Italy have
won once. Again, if you look at the distribution of the individual
titles, the ranking looks a bit different. Counting the
countries in which all previous ANC champions were bred,
the USA lead with 17 horses, followed by Poland with 16,
Germany with 14, and Belgium with 10 champions. Of
these countries, only Germany has never won the Breeders
Cup.
Where breeders and exhibitors are concerned, there is a
very clear winner, and it is the same in both cases: Poland’s
Michalów Stud. Horses bred at Michalów have won a total
of 11 ANC championships, 9 of them for Michalów itself.
Michalów’s mares may well be termed the queens of the
ANC. They have won the senior champion mare title on 7
occasions: Zazula in 1984, Emanacja in 1998, Kwestura in
1999, Zagrobla in 2000, El Dorada in 2002, Palmira in
2007, and Emandoria in 2010; names dear and familiar to
anyone who loves Arabian horses. Moreover, these mares
represent an outstanding achievement in breeding. The
2000 champion Zagrobla is the granddaughter of the 1984
champion Zazula, and the 2010 champion Emandoria is a
granddaughter of the 1998 champion, Emanacja.
If you add the reserve champion mares from the “E” family,
you get an entire dynasty of ANC winners. Emanacja was
the dam of Emanda, a mare who is almost a fixture at the
ANC although she was never champion there herself. She
was, however, twice reserve champion (in 1998 and 2001),
and she is the dam of Emandoria. Another daughter of
Emanacja, Emilda, was reserve champion in 1999, and
Emilda’s daughter Emira was junior female champion in
2002. In addition, El Dorada is the daughter of Emanacja’s
full sister Emigrantka, who was also the dam of Emigrant,
the 1999 reserve champion stallion. This all adds up to a
truly unique achievement in breeding.
State studs do have a certain advantage, of course. Not
unexpectedly, the second most successful breeder of ANC
champions is Poland’s Janów Podlaski. Horses bred at
Janów have won 6 champion titles, but most of these horses
were no longer owned by Janów at the time. Janów
itself won twice, but with the same horse, the incomparable
Pianissima, who was Junior Female Champion in 2004
and Senior Female Champion in 2008.
Third place goes to the most successful private breeder in
the history of the ANC, Belgium’s Dion Arabians. Three stallions
bred at this stud have won a total of 5 ANC champion
titles: Escape Ibn Navarone-D in 2001 and 2005,
Eternity Ibn Navarrone-D in 2004 and 2007, and Nijem Ibn
Eternity in 2004, for another owner. These wins also represent
a great success in breeding, as Escape’s and Eternity’s
dam, Navarrone P, was herself ANC Senior Female
Champion in 2003. This makes her not only the mare
whose produce have won the most ANC titles, but also the
ANC Champion Mare most successful as a broodmare. It is
well known that successful show mares do not automatically
make outstanding broodmares; for each Navarrone or
Emanacja, there are at least two other champions who
never produce anything better than average. Navarrone is
unusual in that she was a successful broodmare first and a
show champion later, rather than the other way around.
