Intercultural competence is becoming more and more important in an increasingly globalised world. This course is designed to
improve your ability to deal with intercultural encounters in English at university and at work. We will examine some of the theory
behind intercultural competence, but be mainly concerned with the practical side of how to manage intercultural encounters - what
to do and say to avoid any misunderstanding or miscommunication, and what to do when something does go wrong. We will look
at our own cultural beliefs in comparison to others, and focus on the kind of language we need to use in order to maximize our
chances of successfully communicating with people outside our own cultural norms. You will be tested orally (presentation) and
in writing for the purposes of UNIcert ® II. Furthermore, this course helps prepare you for the Test of Intercultural Competence
in English as offered by elc - European Language Competence , which may be taken after the course at additional costs.
