Le « European School Science Symposium », c’est quoi ?
L´ESSS est un événement
annuel qui offre aux étudiants
une expérience scientifique.
Toutes les 14 écoles
européennes participent
(étudiants et professeurs), et
les conférenciers et juges
proviennent d´institutions
scientifiques prestigieuses.
Cette année, l´ESSS aura
lieu a Bruxelles du 10 au 13
Mars.
Une étudiante de l´Ecole
Européenne de Culham a
écrit le journal de son expérience.
Elle a dit que c´était
une expérience formidable et
aussi ce qu´ils ont fait. Elle a

who were selected to attend
the Science Symposium in
Brussels IV. The panel of Judges
received 120 entries of
which 75 were invited to attend
the Symposium. The
Frankfurt school was represented
by the following pupils:

et elle se souvenait bien
d´une citation « The things that
have been proved in science are
only about 10% of all that can be
discovered and that is up to you
and me to do ». Tous les jours,
elle a dit qu´elle était fatiguée
mais avait une belle journée. Sa
classe a visité de nombreux bâtiments
importants, par exemple :
L´Office Européen des Brevets.
En général, elle pensait que
c´était une expérience amusante
et intéressante.
Cette année, il y a beaucoup de
projets intéressants comme :

to two jury members as
well as a number of teachers
and pupils. Max Deletioglu, S3
German was then further selected
to participate in the
Junior final with his project ’’A
study of the levels of nitrate
and nitrite ions in cooked
ham“. Vincent Archer, Diego
Soto Rodriguez, Hamzah Selim
were also selected to participate
in the Senior final with
their project entitled “The
effect of Flavonoids on adolescent
frontal cortex development”.
This group of three
eventually were awarded second
place overall in the Scientific
Experiment section.

SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM 2013 BRUSSELS IV
We heard fascinating
speeches from Scientists
regarding everything from
patenting inventions to neuroscience
and robotics. Socially
it was great fun and we
spent a lot of time with
groups from the other European
Schools in particular
Culham and Mol. We rounded
off the excursion with a
wonderful trip to The European
Parliament and The Brussels
Planetarium followed by
a tour of the Grand Place
and surrounding areas. And
then what better way to finish
off the visit than to indulge
ourselves with Belgian
chocolates and waffles!

Project: Winterlandschaften

Since the first snow, the S6
four-hour art class has been
working on an innocently
titled project:
"Winterlanschaften". Now tilt
your head and briefly imagine
what such a classical
winter landscape must look
like: snow caked mountains,
frosty forests and a few good
old snow men, perhaps.
Well, I believe it's
safe to say that none of the
S6's end results remotely
involve these pretty chlichés.
The wide range of reactions
we have recieved over these
paintings proves this to me.
Whilst some viewers were
impressed and thought the
paintings were bold, others
felt they looked somewhat
childlike and "unusual".
This could maybe
be because the advanced art
class has been introduced to
working with a technique
called Action Painting. This
involves the whipping, flicking
and swishing of slight
diluted paint randomly onto
a large, blank paper canvas.
Where the drips then end up
on the canvas is nearly impossible
to control, and the
final outcome is unpredictable.
Believe me, we
were not convinced at first
and need a lot of encouragement
from Frau Poppe, our
teacher. We saw Action
Painting as a risk to our
paintings' failure, not to mention
a danger to our clothing
and shoes! However, once
we grew comfortable with
not needing to fully control
our paintbrushes, the challenge
and experience of
Action Painting gradually
became a chance to show
winter landscapes in a way
that none of us had ever
seen before.
