What they are: it´s an anti

YOU can help too! Be nice to
people and give them compliments.
What it means: it
means bullying (mobbing)
will not make you cooler
much as you wish or
try,even if your friends laugh
and cheer you on.
It also means that respect
wins! Be respectful to people
even if you don´t like
them.If you are bullying
someone yourself you
should stop and think carefully
about what you are
doing. What can the person
you are bullying be feeling?
This is called empathy: putting
yourself in another person´s
shoes and trying to
feel what they are feeling.
If you are being bullied
yourself tell an adult and
ask them for advice. You
can also make a joke of it.
For example if someone
laughs at your hair you just
say, "Thanks I love it too!"

Some of you will probably be
wondering what Red Nose
Day and Comic Relief are,
thanks to all of the posters
that have been around the
school. Well, Red Nose Day
is a brilliant British tradition
that schools and large number
of other individuals and
organisations all across Britain
participate in. The emphasis
is on having fun and
making people laugh. Teachers
tend to do weird or embarrassing
things in order to
raise money for the charity,
Comic Relief. Comic
Relief doesn’t focus the
money it raises on just one
cause, but lots of different,
very important, causes
across Britain and Africa.
This year, my class,
S5En, are trying to raise as
much money as possible
for Comic Relief. Hopefully,
by the time you’re reading
this, we’ll have raised
loads of money and had a
lot of fun at the same
time. Somehow, we managed
to persuade some of
the teachers to make fools
of themselves just for charity,
getting them to wear
Deely Boppers and wear

Tout d’abord il faut dire
qu’Eurosport est une expérience
inoubliable. Cette
année, la compétition a eu
lieu à Alicante (Espagne).
Bien sûr en premier lieu on
se réjouit de pouvoir passer
4 jours au soleil. Mais il ne
faut pas oublier que c’est
fancy dress. We’ve spent
quite a lot of time trying to
organise this event, all
thanks to Ms Scarratt.
Lots of British celebrities
get involved in RND as well
as schools. This year, for
example, One Direction released
a cover of One Way or
Another with David Cameron
and Jessie J will shave her
head to raise money. We
thought it would be great if
we could do our bit to raise

Unseren BAC-Regulierungen
wurden verändert. Ab 2014,
also für die jetzige S6, gelten
die Änderungen. Lassen sich
die Neuerungen in ein paar
kurzen Sätzen zusammenzufassen
oder ist dafür wirklich
eine ganze Broschüre nötig?
Frau Chatzivassiliadou: Sehr
viel ändert sich nicht. Der wesentliche
Unterschied wird in
der Anzahl der schriftlichen
und mündlichen Prüfungen
bestehen. Sie haben sich um
ein Fach reduziert. Es werden
weiterhin fünf Fächer schriftlich
geprüft, jedoch nur noch
drei Fächer an Stelle von vier
Fächern mündlich. Auch die
Kombination der mündlichen
Prüfung ist etwas anders. Bisher
musste man L2 auch
mündlich ablegen. Nun gibt es
die Möglichkeit zwischen L2,
Geographie und Geschichte in
L2 zu wählen. Außerdem wurde
die Gewichtung von Pre-
BAC und BAC umgestellt: Beide
machen nun jeweils 50%
des Endergebnisses aus. Diese
Umstellung enzspricht dem
aktuellen Stand, es wird im
April allerdings noch einmal
endgültig darüber entschieden.
Herr Friss: Außer der Anzahl
der Prüfungen wird auch die
Struktur etwas umgestellt.
Früher gab es in vielen schriftlichen
Fächern zahlreiche
Alternativ-Fragen, d.h. Wahlmöglichkeiten
innerhalb der
Prüfung. Diese werden redu-
ziert. Für manche Schüler mag
es ein Vorteil, für andere ein
Nachteil sein; das lässt sich
schwer sagen. Einerseits verbringt
man keine unnötige Zeit
mehr mit der Entscheidung
zwischen den Alternativen,
andererseits hat man nun
keine oder nur wenige Ausweichmöglichkeiten,
sollte
einem eine bestimmte Frage
mal nicht liegen.
Warum wurde überhaupt etw
a s a n d e n B A C -
Bestimmungen geändert?
Frau Chatzivassiliadou: Um
alles zu optimieren! Das europäische
Schulsystem will in
keiner Weise zurückbleiben.
Deshalb werden regelmäßig
Verbesserungsvorschläge
diskutiert, um sich weiterzuentwickeln
und Schwachstellen
auszubessern.
Herr Friss: Um auf die konkreten
Änderungen zu sprechen
zu kommen, ein Teil-Grund für
die Reduzierungen der mündlichen
Prüfungen ist der Einfluss
subjektiver Eindrücke auf
die Note. Bei den schriftlichen
Prüfungen ist eine viel größere
Objektivität garantiert. Hundertprozentige
Objektivität gibt
es natürlich nie. Diese Veränderung
ist dennoch ein Schritt
in die richtige Richtung. Übrigens
findet sich diese Struktur
auch an Universitäten wieder,
wo die schriftlichen Prüfungen,
im Vergleich zu den mündlichen
Prüfungen eine viel größere
Rolle spielen.
1) 5 schriftliche + 3 mündliche Abitur-Prüfungen
2) Jede Prüfung wird mit dem Koeffizienten 1 gewichtet
3) Lediglich Inhalte der 7. Klasse sind Inhalt der Prüfung
(Kenntnisse aus der 6. Klasse werden jedoch vorausgesetzt)
4) Interne und externe Prüfer führen die mündlichen Prüfungen
durch
5) Die Fragen für die mündlichen Prüfungen werden vom internen
Prüfer vorgeschlagen und vom Inspektor abgesegnet
7) Zusammensetzung der Abiturs-Note:
50 % Durchschnittsvornote
35% Schriftliche Durchschnittsnote
15% Mündliche Durchschnittsnote

Diese Änderungen werden ja
in Zukunft alle Schüler betreffen.
Wie viele Schüler hat unsere
Schule eigentlich?
Herr Friss: In dieser Woche:
1215. Mit "in dieser Woche"
meine ich: Seit September gibt
es fast jede Woche einen neuen
Schüler. Vor allem in der
Primarschule. Da die Europäische
Zentralbank regelmäßig
neue Mitarbeiter bekommt,
wird die Zahl der Familien, die
ihre Kinder über das Jahr
hinweg an der Schule unterbringen,
in den nächsten
Jahren zunehmen. Ich will
damit nicht sagen, dass dies
zur Normalität wird. Es
kommt aber sicherlich öfters
vor.
In unserem Schulalltag erfahren
wir täglich, dass es bei
uns weit mehr Nationalitäten
als nur die unserer vier großen
Sprachsektionen gibt.
Wie viele Nationalitäten gibt
es an unserer Schule und
welche haben momentan die
Möglichkeit auf L1 Unterricht
in der jeweiligen Muttersprache?
Herr Friss: In der Schule gibt
es zur Zeit 40 Nationalitäten.
Diese sind ungefähr gleichmäßig
über Primarstufe und Sekundarstufe
verteilt. Es gibt
vielleicht ein oder zwei Nationalitäten
in der Primarstufe,
die in der Sekundarstufe nicht
vertreten sind, oder umgekehrt.
Wir unterrichten zur
Zeit 15 Sprachen in der ganzen
Schule plus die Sektionssprachen.
Somit insgesamt 19
Sprachen.
Frau Chatzivassiliadou: Mit
den Nationalitäten ist das nie
so einfach, da es viele Schüler
mit doppelten Staatsbürgerschaften
gibt. Manche haben
auch deutsche Pässe, stammen
aber ursprünglich aus
anderen Ländern. Allerdings
gibt es hauptsächlich Europäische
Nationalitäten. Einige
wenige sind nicht aus Europa.
Wir sind eben eine Multi-Kulti
Gemeinschaft.
Im März 2014 wird die europäische
Bankenaufsicht mit in
das neue EZB-Gebäude ziehen.
Um genau zu sein: Bis zu
zweitausend neue Mitarbeiter.

natürlich auch Familie und die
Kinder somit die einmalige
Möglichkeit die Europäische
Schule Frankfurt zu besuchen.
Wie viele neue Schüler erwarten
Sie?
Herr Friss: Die EZB wird, durch
die neue Aufgabe der europäischen
Bankenaufsicht, größer
werden. Diese wird komplett
neu gegründet und die Schülerzahl
sehr stark beeinflussen.
Genau wissen wir das
aber noch nicht, denn die Entscheidung
über die genaue
Anzahl der Mitarbeiter wird
erst in diesem Jahr getroffen.
Man rechnet aber mit einer
Mitarbeiterzahl von mehreren
hundert über die nächsten
Jahre verteilt.
Wie wird die Schule mit diesem
absehbaren Zuwachs an
Schülern umgehen?
Herr Friss: Über diese Frage
wurde noch nicht endgültig
entschieden. Es gibt Überlegungen
und Diskussionen,
dass zum einen hier in der
Schule etwas vergrößert werden
kann. Vielleicht ist es aber
auch notwendig eine komplett
neue Schule in Frankfurt zu
eröffnen. Auch das ist eine
Möglichkeit. Natürlich wird
unsere Schule größer werden.
Ab September werden neue
Container für die Grundschule
aufgestellt. Der angesprochene
Zuwachs an Schülern wird
erst im Schuljahr 2014/2015
erwartet. Die Vorbereitungen
werden darum erst in Zukunft
getroffen werden. Allerdings
muss natürlich schon früher
angefangen werden zu bauen,
wenn man nicht will, dass die
Schüler mit bauen.
Sind bereits Neuanmeldungen
eingegangen und wie umfangreich
sind diese?
Herr Friss: Wir wissen noch
nicht, wer hier in Frankfurt
arbeiten wird: Weder wie viele
Kinder kommen, noch in welchem
Alter diese sein werden.
In diesem Jahr ist, bis jetzt, nur
die übliche Anzahl an Neuan-
meldungen eingegangen. Der
große Zuwachs wird gleichwohl
erst in den nächsten Jahren
kommen. Die Bankenaufsicht
ist ja erst in Planung.

E UROSPORT 2013 – UND WIR WAR EN DAB EI
This is Madness! “ – „No, this is FRANK-
FURT!! “
Diesen spektakulären Schlachtruf wird
wohl kaum eine der andere Europäischen
Schulen so schnell wieder vergessen!
Zwar liegt das nicht in erster Linie an
unserem sportlichen Erfolg, jedoch umso
mehr an unserer unzerstörbaren Motivation
und dem erstklassigen Zusammenhalt
unseres Teams!
Fast ein ganzes Schuljahr haben sich die
Eurosportler jede Woche dienstags für
zwei Stunden getroffen, zusammen trainiert
und jede Menge Spaß gehabt.
Für Basketball und Fußball haben
wir neben Frau Henninger und Herr
Plendl außerdem noch externe
Unterstützung von Carsten Schröter
(Basketball) und Katharina
(Fußball) bekommen. Jeweils ca. 1-
2 Monate haben wir intensiv mit
ihnen die jeweilige Sportart trainiert
und haben auch Fortschritte gemacht!
Mit Herr Klüppelholz haben wir
eifrig schwimmen und laufen trainiert,
was sich am Ende auch ausgezahlt hatte.
Mittwochmorgen war es schließlich soweit
und nach einem kleinen Zwischenstopp
in Berlin ging es direkt weiter nach
Alicante. Angekommen im warmen Spanien
ging es zuerst in das Hotel, in dem
alle 300 Schüler und Schülerinnen untergebracht
wurden, und dann sofort zum
Strand. Bei knapp 20 °C kann man auch
schon mal schwimmen gehen, dachten
sich da einige und taten dies auch, was
bei manchen in den nächsten Tagen
leider zu einer üblem Grippe führte.
Donnerstag ging es dann früh morgens
los. Frühstücken und dann ab geht’s zum
Fußballteil des Wettbewerbs, bei dem die
Mädels sogar besser als die Jungs abschnitten.
Am selben Tag holten uns die
sechs Badmintonspieler den soliden
zehnten Platz in dieser Disziplin.
Der Freitag war genauso durchgeplant
wie der Donnerstag. Morgens schnell
frühstücken und dann ab zum Basketballturnier.
Dort waren dann die Jungs
erfolgreicher als die Mädchen, und haben
ein paar Gegner haushoch geschlagen!
Zwar war Samstag der letzte Tag an dem
„THIS IS MADNESS!“
„NO, THIS IS FRANKFURT!!“
Sport gemacht wurde, jedoch heißt das
für die Frankfurter Jungs und Mädels
nicht, dass die Motivation sinkt. Ganz im
Gegenteil, denn sowohl diejenigen die
aktiv geschwommen und gelaufen sind,
aber auch die Anfeuernden haben noch-
mal alles gegeben! Das hat sich ausgezahlt
und somit wurde Frankfurt siebte
im Schwimmen und zehnte im Laufen.
Anschließend sind alle Teams noch köstliche,
original Spanische, Paella essen
gegangen und haben somit das Turnier
gemütlich ausklingen lassen. Aber selbst
hier konnte keine der anderen Schulen
im Bereich Motivation und gute Stimmung
mit der Frankfurter mithalten!
Leider haben unsere Leistungen im Endeffekt
nur für den 13. und somit letzten
Platz gereicht, jedoch war es eine tolle
Erfahrung für alle Beteiligten. Viele
neue Freundschaften haben sich
gebildet, und andere gefestigt, die
hoffentlich noch lange bestehen
bleiben
Kurz zusammengefasst kann ich im
Namen aller sagen, dass es unglaublich
viel Spaß gemacht hat,
und hätte ich nochmal die Chance
den Verlauf dieser fünf Tage zu ändern,
würde ich es nicht machen.
Vielen Dank, dass die Schule so etwas
Tolles möglich gemacht hat!

L'énigme d'Einstein

Cérémonie des Oscars : les robes de soirée
Cette année, comme chaque
année, les Oscars se sont
déroulés à Hollywood. Comme
toujours un des thèmes principaux
était : quelle actrice a la
meilleure robe ? Sûrement
quelques tenues ne convenaient
pas à une soirée avec
tapis rouge mais d’autres
étaient stupéfiantes et dignes
de princesses.
De loin la meilleure robe était
celle de Jennifer Lawrence.
Elle avait une couleur merveilleuse
qui faisait ressortir la
couleur de sa peau. Mais ce
n'est pas inhabituel que Dior
parvient toujours à faire des
robes magnifiques et fascinantes.
Une autre actrice qui a su
charmer le public avec une
élégante robe de Miu Miu est
Kerry Washington. La robe
rose a un contraste claire la
comparant à la peau. Elle
vous donne une sensation de
chaleur et chaque personne
qui la voyait passer restait
bouche bée. C’est pour notre
part notre robe préférée, car
les fleurs donnaient un sentiment
de printemps sur une
journée froide.

Cependant, comme toujours,
il y avait clairement des flops,
comme Kristen Stewart . Elle
a choisi une robe qui faisait
penser à un corps mort mis
dans une peau d’oiseaux.
Peut-être sur une autre actrice,
cette robe n’aurait pas
semblé si mauvaise que ça,
mais avec l'aspect typiquement
colèrique de Kristen,
tout était en ruine.
Outre Kristen et quelques
autres stars, le défilé des
robes du soir était assez réussi.
Mais c’est ce que nous
attendons de la société glamour
d'Hollywood !

Nata a Torino il 22 aprile 1909
da famiglia ebraica, dopo aver
studiato medicina all'università
di Torino, contro la volontà di
suo padre, all'eta' di 20 anni,

dell'istologo Giuseppe Levi
iniziando gli studi sul sistema
nervoso che proseguì per tutta
la sua vita. Si laureò nel 1936
e nel 1938, in quanto ebrea
sefardita, fu costretta dalle
leggi razziali del regime fascista
a emigrare in Belgio con Levi,
dove continuò le sue ricerche.
Nel 1947 accettò l'invito a proseguire
le sue ricerche al dipartimento
di Zoologia della
Washington University, dove
rimase fino al 1977. Nel 1952
scoprì il fattore di crescita nervoso
noto come Ngf (Nerve
Growth Factor), che gioca un
ruolo essenziale nella crescita
e differenziazione delle cellule
nervose sensoriali e simpatiche.
Nel 1986 venne insignita
del Premio Nobel per la medicina.
Dal 1961 al 1969 fu a capo

We, the S6 English Religion
class, worked on a video project
which involved us interviewing
P1 and P2 classes on
their knowledge about basic
religious themes such as heaven/hell,
marriage and bible
stories. The inspiration for this
project came from a comical
cartoon in Ireland, Give Up Yer
Aul sins, where they did something
similar but displayed the
children’s voices on cartoons
(as seen in the picture on the
right).
Our aim of this project was to
find out the amount of
knowledge children of the age
6-8 years have of religious
themes, as well as finding out
how they interpret religious
themes.
During our weekly Religion lessons
we went over to the primary
school to first introduce ourselves
and get to know the
children. After a few lessons of
preparation, where we thought
of questions such as Who is
God? and delegating tasks, we
began filming, first talking to
the children as a class and the
individually or in pairs. Also, we

we asked them to tell us some

This class project gave us all a
wonderful experience and a
glimpse of how children aged 6-
8 think or how we thought
about religion, good and evil
and many other subjects at that
age.
This gave us a chance to do
something completely different
and interesting in class and
allowed us to develop skills
such as teamwork, delegating
or even public speaking. The
primary children also benefitted
from this project, for they too
developed communication
skills and become more confident
around the scary, big kids.
We all had a great experience,
and we look forward to the
faces of the Primary children
when they see themselves on
the TV!

Virvon varvon!
V i r p o m i n e n o n m o n e l l e
suomalaiselle olennainen osa
pääsiäistä. Virpominen ei ole
kuitenkaan kaikille aivan tuttu
juttu, sillä sitä harrastettiin
ainakin ennen vanhaan vain Itä-
Suomessa. Alunperin se oli
ortodoksisuuteen liittyvä perinne,
joka alkoi Venäjän puolella, mutta
nykyään se on enemmänkin
lasten palmusunnuntain viihdyke.
Aamulla lapset väkästävät
itselleen pajunkissan oksista
hienot virpomisvitsat, koristaen
ne mm. värikkäillä höyhenillä ja
nauhoilla. Vitsojen valmistuttua
on tapana pukeutua noidaksi ja
l ä h t e ä k i e r t e l e m ä ä n
naapuristossa värikkäiden
vitsojen kera, pysähtyen ihmisten
etuovilla. Naapureille ja
perheenjäsenille lausutaan
pienmuotoinen loru, josta on
olemassa useampikin versio.

virkelig suveræn holdånd. Vi
heppede på vores hold som
bare pokker og var klar med
(soda)vand og musik efter
hver kamp. Vi vandt den
næstsidste kamp og det
føltes virkelig fedt. Næste
dag spillede vi basketball
hvor det skiftede lidt hvor
tulevaks vuodeks. Vitsa sulle,
palkka mulle”.

uskotaan noitien olevan

koitettiin välttää pah oja
tapahtumia. Tämä suomalainen
p e r i n n e o n k i n h i e m a n
samanlainen kuin Amerikassa
alkanut ”halloween”, eli ”karkki
tai kepponen” -perinne, jonka
tarkoituksena on pelotella ilkeät
henget pois. Nykyään virpominen
taitaa kuitenkin olla monille vain
perinteinen tapa toivottaa onnea
ja terveyttä omaisille sekä
n a a p u r e i l l e . L a p s i l l e
houkuttimena taitaa olla
kuitenkin vain karkki, suklaa tai
raha, jota avokätinen naapuri
saattaa antaa heille palkaksi!

godt vi spillede. Den sidste
kamp var vores bedste som vi
vandt stort. Jeg scorede og det
er jeg ret stolt af.
Tredje og sidste dag var
duathlon (svømning og løb.) Det
var en sportsgren hvor vi først
skulle svømme 50 meters
staffet og så 2 timer senere
skulle vi løbe 1000 meters
staffet men hvor vi blev sænket
den tid vi mistede til
svømningen. Det lyder måske
nemt nok men når man skulle
gøre det så hurtigt man
overhovedet kunne var det
virkelig hårdt. Alle heppede på
hinanden og det var så dejligt at
få et kram af en man normalt
ikke får fra fordi vi nu var et
team. Et rigtigt team. Igennem
tykt og tyndt. Jeg har fået
virkelig mange venner ud af det
her og anbefaler stærkt at tage
med om 2 år. Vi kan kun blive
bedre til den tid.

Set in the United States during the time of the slave trade,
a retired dentist turned bounty-hunter (Dr. King Schultz)
recruits a young slave called Django to help him track
down and kill the Brittle Brothers. Dr. Schultz and Django
become partners in crime and embark on a journey to
reunite Django with his wife, Broomhilda. Their seemingly
impossible quest brings them to the Candyland plantation,
home of the most brutal slave-owner in the South: Calvin
Candie.
Django Unchained is everything you would expect from a
Quentin Tarantino film, with frequent violence and plenty
of blood whilst maintaining a serious undertone. Tarantino
inserts the slave owner’s sordid intentions into their seemingly
pristine and picturesque lives through the clever use
of imagery: Mr. Candie’s favourite dessert just happens to
be white cake.
The film also picked up two well-deserved Oscars at the
85 th Academy Awards: Christoph Waltz for best supporting
actor, and Quentin Tarantino for best screenplay.

The Double Sun Theory
ISSUE 2
According to the newest research, in the next century, a
second sun will be visible in the sky. This is due to a massive
supernova star explosion near (don’t worry, not too near)
to earth.
You may ask yourself what a supernova star is. A supernova
star is a star which explodes producing a massive rain of
radiation which can rarely effect the whole galaxy due to
the light outlining the star.
Another special effect of the double sun is that night might
be as bright as day! Also a shower of space particles might
rain down on us. However, according to Dr. Brad Carter,
lecturer of Physics at the Queensland University, none of
these side effects will have a bad influence to our planet.
This is a supernova star observed in 1997 through NASA
telescopes.
STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT
As the old wife tale inclines, when a fallen star is seen
you can make a wish.
Of course this is not true. However, it is a fun way for little
children to wish for their perfect future. Falling stars
are actually meteorites which are zooming through the
endless horizons of our universe.

SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM 2013 BRUSSELS IV
We heard fascinating
speeches from Scientists
regarding everything from
patenting inventions to neuroscience
and robotics. Socially
it was great fun and we
spent a lot of time with
groups from the other European
Schools in particular
Culham and Mol. We rounded
off the excursion with a
wonderful trip to The European
Parliament and The Brussels
Planetarium followed by
a tour of the Grand Place
and surrounding areas. And
then what better way to finish
off the visit than to indulge
ourselves with Belgian
chocolates and waffles!

Since the first snow, the S6
four-hour art class has been
working on an innocently
titled project:
"Winterlanschaften". Now tilt
your head and briefly imagine
what such a classical
winter landscape must look
like: snow caked mountains,
frosty forests and a few good
old snow men, perhaps.
Well, I believe it's
safe to say that none of the
S6's end results remotely
involve these pretty chlichés.
The wide range of reactions
we have recieved over these
paintings proves this to me.
Whilst some viewers were
impressed and thought the
paintings were bold, others
felt they looked somewhat
childlike and "unusual".
This could maybe
be because the advanced art
class has been introduced to
working with a technique
called Action Painting. This
involves the whipping, flicking
and swishing of slight
diluted paint randomly onto
a large, blank paper canvas.
Where the drips then end up
on the canvas is nearly impossible
to control, and the
final outcome is unpredictable.
Believe me, we
were not convinced at first
and need a lot of encouragement
from Frau Poppe, our
teacher. We saw Action
Painting as a risk to our
paintings' failure, not to mention
a danger to our clothing
and shoes! However, once
we grew comfortable with
not needing to fully control
our paintbrushes, the challenge
and experience of
Action Painting gradually
became a chance to show
winter landscapes in a way
that none of us had ever
seen before.
