Das Konzept des „Ikonen“-

Graz 2003 ist voll aufgegangen:
Man geht in die neue Helmut
List-Halle. Man spricht über Musik
des 20. Jahrhunderts. Und man ist
ikonen des 20. jahrhunderts
ohren für neues
Nur ein toter Komponist ist ein guter Komponist? Mitnichten.
Eine Konzertreihe in der Helmut List-Halle liefert den Gegenbeweis.
fasziniert von Kompositionen, deren
Schöpfer man noch nicht zu ihrem
100. Todestag ehren konnte…
„Eigentlich bin ich ein Musikbanause“,
erzählte eine Konzertbesucherin
nach dem ersten „Ikonen“-
ikonen des 20. jahrhunderts
zentrale positionen in der musik
Abend am 6. Februar. „Mich hat
jemand angesprochen, ob ich mitkomme
– und ich bin begeistert.“
Ein paar Reihen weiter saß ein
„Routinier“ in Sachen Musik des 20.
Jahrhunderts: „Ich verbringe sogar
meinen Urlaub mit zeitgenössischer
Musik.“ Natürlich werde er auch versuchen,
in seiner Heimatstadt jedes
der Ikonen-Konzerte zu besuchen.
Da hat er viel vor. Im Laufe des
Kulturhauptstadtjahres werden dem
ersten Konzert zwölf weitere folgen,
gleich zwei in dieser Woche: Am 17.
Februar dirigiert Christian Arming das

concert series in the Helmut List Hall
is the proof.
The concept of ”Icon” creator
Peter Oswald for Graz 2003 has been
fully realized: People attend concerts
in the new Helmut List Hall to enjoy
20th century music and are fascinated
by compositions by musicians
who have been dead for less than
100 years. ”Actually I’m a music
philistine,” commented one of the
concert visitors after the first ”Icon”
evening on February 6 th . ”Someone
happened to ask me if I wanted to
come along and I’m so glad I did. It’s
not music to sing along to, but it’s
really moving.”
Another visitor, far from a ”newcomer”
to 20th century music, sat a
few rows back. ”I even spend my
holidays with contemporary music.”
Of course, he is going to try to attend
every Icon concert in his home town.
Then he’ll certainly be quite busy,
because over the course of the cultural
year twelve more concerts are to
follow, two just this week. On
February 17 th Christian Arming will
conduct the Vienna Radio Symphony
Orchestra. The program will include
works by Rihm, Haas and Janacek.
The soloist is violinist Ernst Kovacic,
who is considered one of the best
soloists of his generation not least
thanks to his commitment to contemporary
music.
On February 20 th the third evening
of the concert series will revolve around
star conductor Valery Gergiev
and the Kirov Orchestra of the Mariinsky
Theater with total ”modern-age
classics” by Stravinsky and Cerha.
As the „Icon” visitor quoted
above recently said with regard to
such concert programs, ”It’s too bad
there aren’t any season tickets.”
