Probability of Target Detection: geographical distribution (left) and chronological distribution (right)
formation was adjusted in accordance with the
update interval of the ASTERIX reports.
The proposed modification of the test approach
identified a stepwise adjustment of data latency
and difference of ToA. If the adjustments were
taken into account the WAM data behaved like
conventional radar data. The data adjustment
has not generated additional reports; however
the results of the probability of target detection
analyses were much more meaningful now.
The adjustment of the data was only a workaround.
In the future the measurement tool itself
needs to be modified in order to deal with the
different timing behavior of ADS-B and WAM
data.
Figure 5 shows the geographical and chronological
distribution of the probability of target detection
of a WAM system (just look at the distribution,
the numbers are not important). In the left
diagram, the PoD is color coded (colors from 0 to
green, see column), white cells indicate areas
without data. The distribution is more or less homogenous
within the 128 NM x 80 NM coverage
volume. The measured values were well above
the required probability of target detection
threshold of 97% even in peak hour periods. The
chronological distribution (right diagram in Figure
5) shows an effect of the traffic load on the probability
of target detection. In times when the traffic
load was quite high, the load on the SSR 1090
MHz radio field increased as well and this led to
a degradation of the probability of target detection
due to overlapping signals which could not
be decoded correctly anymore. The green curve
on the top of the diagram shows the PoD for a 1
second update intervals, the red line for a 5 second
update interval.
7. Horizontal Position Accuracy (HPA)
The horizontal position accuracy (HPA) is the
quantitative bound of certainty in the calculated
position for a target as related to the true position
of that target and is expressed as a Root Mean
Square (RMS) of an absolute distance error [1].
7.1 Test Approach
The horizontal position accuracy analysis of the
WAM data was carried out using a stepwise approach.
In a first step, the sensor plot data of the
reference system (either radar or ADS-B data)
were collected and chained to reference tracks
for each monitored flight. The next step correlates
the WAM plot data to the corresponding
reference track. For each WAM plot information
this correlation identifies the corresponding information
within the reference track. The difference
of WAM plot information and reference information
provides the WAM plot deviation.
Figure 6 describes the various deviations, which
are further analyzed: total track deviation (TD)
and across/along track deviation (XTD, ATD).
