KUNSTWERKE
VALUABLE COLLECTORS’
ITEMS
Each item in our new series of Limited Edition Art Works symbolises a given point in
our 300-year history. Art collectors all over the world are, like our founder Augustus the
Strong before them, afflicted by the “maladie de porcelaine” – and certainly appreciate
the enduring value of this rare craftsmanship.

dessins gleich mehrere Objekte.
an.
So
Preface
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
LOVERS OF MEISSEN PORCELAIN®,
I have great pleasure in presenting our 2014 series of
Limited Edition Art Works to you.
There are several items in store for lovers of the Swan
Service this time around. The Swan Service has gone down
in history as the most magnificent and comprehensive tableware
service ever produced at the manufactory. It was
commissioned by Count Heinrich von Brühl (1700–1765),
who originally ordered 2,200 individual items, each of which
featured his coat of arms. The priceless collection continued
to hold pride of place in the Brühl home for over 200
years before the ravages of World War Two saw it broken up
and scattered to all corners of the earth. It is our mission to
successively recreate all its constituent parts in all their glory
and to add the same alliance crest that adorned the original
tableware to all limited edition pieces.
I am particularly proud to announce that we have again
included a clock in the present series. This clock – first
made in 1744 for King Augustus the Third – served less as a
means of telling the time than as an expression of royal life.
Its design features symbolically represent values such as
dominance, righteousness, fertility, affluence, science and
defensive prowess. None of these values have lost their topicality
in the interveaning years.
From the early 20th century we have figures from the
“Russian Ballet”. Paul Scheurich (1883–1945) created his
figures of male and female Russian dancers in 1912, some
time after attending and being mightily impressed by a guest
performance of “Carnaval” at Berlin’s Theater des Westens.
The Manufactory bought the collection of figures from him
the following year. Paul Scheurich, one of the most important
porcelain modellers of his age, was convinced that porcelain
statuary required a balanced interplay of shaping and
decoration for its full powers of expression to be tapped.
This explains why he additionally stipulated how the figures
he modelled were to be coloured. We have now, one hundred
years after purchasing the original figures, decided to
issue them in a special colour scheme that nevertheless draws
on Scheurich’s own decorative specifications.
The Meissen porcelain manufactory has shown off items
of exceptional beauty at various international exhibitions
in the past. A jewellery chest designed by Ludwig Sturm
(1844–1926) was re-issued in a faithfully detailed, strictly
limited edition in 2013 – exactly 120 years after its world
première in Chicago. We have returned to the theme for
this year’s limited edition artworks by producing the piece
in miniaturised form as a music box. This precious gem has
been decorated using a variety of complex painting techniques
already practised on the larger jewellery chest. The
playing apparatus is something of a sensation in itself. All
in all, then, this tiny work of art is likely to thrill porcelain
enthusiasts and music lovers alike.
In our customary manner, the 2014 series embraces a
wide range of products in the most varied of styles. I would
particularly like to draw your attention to an extra ordinary
vase decorated with mythical beasts and figures after
Löwenfinck. This vase combines several MEISSEN ®
painting techniques in a very special way. Painters from a
number of disciplines have worked together to come up with
a new product that more than compares to with counterparts
from the 18th century. Fanciful scenes of birds and flowers in
underglaze blue vie for the beholder’s attention with mythical
beasts in the style of Adam Friedrich Löwenfinck (1714–
1754) that have been painted over the glaze with more than
compares to finesse.
I cordially invite you to browse through our 2014 series
at your leisure and decide which of the pieces are your own
personal favourites.
I very much hope you enjoy reading this catalogue,
GELEBTES WISSEN,
GELIEBTE KUNST
LIVING KNOWLEDGE, LOVING ART
Art and ability, endeavour and endurance, loving attention to detail and a passion for
centuries-old works of art – these are just some of the attributes that MEISSEN ® artists
require in order to create priceless collector’s items in porcelain for posterity.
Handwerkskunst / Craftsmanship
3 JAHRE HANDWERKSKUNST –
DIE PERFEKTION DES KÖNNENS
3 YEARS OF CRAFTSMANSHIP –
ABILITY HONED TO PERFECTION
Hier muss jeder Pinselstrich sitzen. 1973 fing Trommer
Christoph Trommer nun seit fast vier Jahrzehnten kunstvolle
Geheimnisvolle Farben
So ist es auch bei Frank Löchelt. Seit 1985 ist er im hauseigenen
Farblabor der Hüter über rund 10.000 Farben, die
Alchemist der Gegenwart:
Modern-day alchemist:
Frank Löchelt works in
the manufactory’s paint
laboratory, where he keeps
the secret of MEISSEN ® ’s
unique colours.
Porcelain painters, paint scientists, repairers, master modellers:
it took a range of great artists to make MEISSEN ®
world-famous. Modern successors uphold their rich
legacy – and are constantly re-inventing the manufactory
with their new ideas and creations.
“It’s a never-ending learning process,” Christoph
Trommer admits as he applies the fine detail to a landscape
scene on porcelain with a calm hand and delicate, precise
brush strokes. The porcelain painter has been honing his
craft skills to perfection for 40 years now. He works freehand
to recompose etchings from the 18th century in a manner
that betrays an incredible knowledge of the colours and
themes of the age. Every brush stroke has to be absolutely
spot-on. Trommer joined the manufactory as an apprentice
in 1973. “But you need four years’ training and, at the very
least, a further ten years of professional experience before
you can really say you’ve learnt the ropes,” he concedes – assuming
the talent is there at all, of course.
Following in the footsteps of the great Meissen porcelain
painter Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696–1775), Christoph
13
Handwerkskunst
Eine Porzellanfigur, wie hier das Modell einer
Tänzerin, besteht oft aus vielen einzelnen Teilen,
die in der Bossierwerkstatt sorgfältig zum
Gesamtkunstwerk zusammengefügt werden.
A porcelain figurine, in this case the model of a
woman dancing, often comprises a great number of
separate parts that are carefully joined together in
the fettling shop to form the complete work of art.
Rund 300 Standardfarben
sind heute regelmäßig in Benutzung. Ihre genaue
Zusammensetzung erfolgt anhand unzähliger, in alter
Trommer has been drafting stylish patterns and painting the
prototypes for coveted collectors’ editions such as our annual
series of ‘Limited Edition Art Works’ or our ‘Exclusive
Collection’ for almost forty years now. And, as with all
spheres of artistic production at the manufactory, it can be
safely stated here that, once an artist has fallen for the craft
of Meissen porcelain, for its history, marvellous landscapes,
vintage urban scenes, manifold figures and floral patterns,
they are likely to remain true to the company all their working
life.
Mystical colours
Which is the case with Frank Löchelt. Since 1985, he has
watched over the 10,000 or so colours created at MEISSEN ® ’s
in-house laboratory since Höroldt came up with his initial
palette of 16 refractory overglaze colours in 1725. He trained
as a thrower of ware and then spent more than ten years
acquiring the specialist knowledge and skills of generations
under his colour theory supervisor. There are around 300
standard colours in regular use today. The process of mixing
them involves consulting countless formulae and notes entered
by hand in a little book dating back to 1895 that is enticingly
entitled “Blue-Green, Copper Green, Apple Green”.
Recipes passed down through the ages are jealously
guarded secrets known only to a “chosen few” – Frank
Löchelt being one – who have the job of preserving and
archiving them. This, after all, is what still enables any
shade in the range of underglaze, overglaze and in-glaze
paints amassed in over three centuries that are so typical of
MEISSEN ® to be authentically formulated today.
14
Craftsmanship
Apfelgrün, Türkisblau
oder Purpur: Das
Farblabor kann auf rund
10.000 Farben zurückgreifen.
Ihre genaue
Rezeptur ist ein gut
gehütetes Geheimnis.
Apple green, turquoise or
purple: the paint
laboratory has around
10,000 colours at its
disposal. Their precise
composition is a closely
guarded secret.
Ein Formenschatz aus vier Jahrhunderten
Seinen Anfang nimmt jedes Kunstwerk im imposanten
Formenarchiv.
250 Jahren tat.
The perfectionist Löchelt is well aware of the enormity of
his task: “There are so many factors in the making of paints
that can influence the outcome,” he explains. This is a man
who, even today, checks whether he has produced exactly
the right shade by making a direct comparison of colours
on a plate.
Stock of moulds from four different centuries
Each work of art has its origins in the imposing Archive of
Moulds. Some 150,000 meticulously documented master
moulds await reproduction of the models from which they
were originally made on ceiling-high wooden shelves – the
only treasure trove of its kind in the world, one that we are
constantly tapping for our Limited Edition Art Works and
which allows works by Kaendler, Acier or Scheurich to be
recreated at any time.
The model-maker uses one of these plaster moulds to
produce a clay model in the modelling shop. With experienced
hands, dedicated tools and astute powers of judgment,
specialists examine and go over every tiniest detail such as
the folds of clothes, the limbs and faces of human or animal
figures or other special stylistic features, constantly checking
them against historical models. The clay model merely
serves as the basis for the working mould from which the
porcelain sculpture is subsequently cast, however. Once it
has been joined together and scrutinised by the model-maker,
a wire is used to cut it back up into individual, mouldcompatible
sections.
Liquid plaster is poured over the various parts to create
dome-like negative moulds that are then lined with porcelain
Handwerkskunst / Craftsmanship
Mit verschiedenen Pinseln zaubern die
Porzellanmaler historische Städte und
malerische Landschaften auf das glasierte
Porzellan.
Porcelain painters use a variety of brushes to
spirit historical cities and picturesque
landscapes onto the glazed porcelain.
paste, an operation that likewise calls for a great deal of experience.
Uneven thicknesses in the ceramic body can lead to
material tension and cracking, in which case the piece would
be ruined. The repairer proceeds very much as the modelmaker
has done previously by fitting the various parts together
and adding the sculptural finishing touches – in essentially
the same way as Kaendler did more than 250 years ago.
Once the famous Crossed Swords ® have been added by
hand and the piece has been carefully glazed, its real moment
of truth arrives in the kiln: it is fired at up to 1,450
degrees Centigrade and subsequently cooled back down to
room temperature. The porcelain contracts in weight and
size by almost a fifth during this phase. Signs of cracking
or deformation following firing indicate that a mistake has
been made at some point, and the work has to be done all
over again. If everything has gone to plan, the piece passes to
Christoph Trommer and his porcelain painting colleagues,
who employ Höroldt’s overglaze paints, steel drawing pens
and the deftest of brush strokes to optimum effect. They
knife turpentine into the powdered paint to form a workable
medium – modulating its consistency to arrive at the shade
required. The enamels are fired at around 850 degrees Centigrade
and only now acquire their trademark luminosity.
“The whole is more than the sum of its parts,” Aristotle argued,
a dictum that also holds true for the Meissen manufactory.
It is only by fusing unique craft skills with the commitment
and vast experience of people like Christoph Trommer
and Frank Löchelt, after all, that the history of MEISSEN ®
can continue to shine forth through a mixture of age-old
know-how and present-day inspiration.
The MEISSEN ® porcelain manufactory caused quite a stir at the
Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 with an item of rare beauty by its Art
Director Ludwig Sturm (1844–1926).
He formed astutely decorated porcelain, precious woods and fine
bronzes into a jewellery chest more priceless even than its prospective
contents. Craft artisans at MEISSEN ® spent more than two years faithfully
recreating the work, which was completed in 2013. They revived
long-forgotten traditional techniques in the process – and were so
struck by the outcome that they decided to stage the opulently adorned
porcelain as a work of art in its own right: the charm of the jewellery
chest has now been captured in miniaturised form in a musical box.
The cover boasts soft, romantic relief moulding in a patê-sur-patê
style, whereby layer after layer of liquid porcelain body is painted onto
the coloured ground – a technique from the past that is now only mastered
and adopted at MEISSEN ® . Capriciously framing the medallion
are tendril scrolls, flower heads and splendid peacocks. The decorative
motifs, including the lavish gilding, all once adorned Sturm‘s worldfamous
jewellery chest. The playing apparatus concealed within the
box produces music to befit the artwork in the form of compositions
by Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn, Clara Wieck-Schumann and Alma
Mahler-Schindler.
Fama, the goddess of fame, hovers triumphantly above time and
every thing that Frederick Augustus II (1696–1763) sought to represent
as Prince Elector of Saxony, King of Poland and Grand-Duke
of Lithuania.
Domination and justice are symbolised on the Baroque table clock
by a woman holding a sceptre and the goddess Justitia positioned
alongside the electoral crest. Fertility and affluence gush out of the
cornucopia of virility onto the Saxon arms from the other side. Above,
two cherubs romp about armed with the Book of Science and the
Sword of Defensive Capability. Two others are bent over the Saxon
elector’s crown clasping the imperial orb.
Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706–1775), Johann Friedrich Eberlein
(1665–1749) and Johann Gottlieb Ehder created the model for Saxony’s
great patron of the arts at MEISSEN ® in 1744 – during a period
in which they were frequently contracted to produce allegorical
figures and elaborate mythological scenes. Politically speaking, the
Prince Elector may not have garnered quite as much fame and glory
as the porcelain figures would appear to suggest, given Saxony’s embroilment
in the Seven Years’ War, which was waged from 1756 to
1763. The practice of employing the gods of Classical Antiquity to
symbolise various abilities and virtues is nevertheless typical of how
the aristocracy was portrayed – and of how it saw itself – during the
Baroque Age. In instilling so much motion into their allegorical figures
and arranging them in such dynamic manner around the clock’s gilded
works, the porcelain artists at MEISSEN ® have fashioned a particularly
accomplished and precious piece.
The life-size porcelain animals that Meissen porcelain modeller
Johann Gottlieb Kirchner began designing in 1731 incorporate
several currents of the late-Baroque style. He became a master of
large-format animal statuary with works such as “Monkey with
schaffen. Auf Hochtouren wurde deshalb bei MEISSEN ® seit 1731
an neuen Kreationen gearbeitet, darunter lebensgroßen Tierplastiken,
Augustus the Strong (1670–1733) aspired to turn his “Japanese
Palace” in Dresden into the world’s largest and most magnificent
palace for porcelain. As a result, work on new creations proceeded
flat-out at MEISSEN ® from 1731 onwards, amongst them life-size
animal sculptures considered some of the finest specimens of porcelain
art produced in the entire 18th century.
The “Female Monkey with Young” modelled by Johann Gottlieb
Kirchner (1706-post-1738) is a good example. The trained sculptor
initially had great difficulty working in the malleable medium
of porcelain but, with time, evolved into a master of large-format
animal statuary alongside Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706–1775) at
Meissen. The two modellers found the sources for their sculptures
close at hand in natural science illustrations, cabinets displaying stuffed
animals and the menageries and aviaries sited around Moritzburg
Hunting Lodge.
Whereas Kaendler was strong on dynamics, Kirchner placed greater
emphasis on expressions. His “Female Monkey with Young” depicts
a tormented mother with realistic and, in a funny sort of way, rather
human traits: its mix of traditional and modern approaches is symptomatic
of the various currents running through late Baroque art.
SCHWANENSERVICE:
OPUS MAGNUM
DES SPÄTBAROCKS
SWAN SERVICE: MAGNUM OPUS
OF THE LATE BAROQUE
Jahrhunderts zusammen.
Never was dining a more lavish affair than at the home of Count Brühl (1700–1763) and his
heirs. This was largely down to Johann Joachim Kaendler, Johann Friedrich Eberlein and
Johann Gottlieb Ehder, who designed the “Swan Service”, the greatest masterpiece of
Baroque porcelain art, between 1737 and 1742. Relief-moulded shapes and figures from the
realms of the oceans and Greek mythology adorn each of its 2,000-plus items. The service
owes its name to the sculpted swans that can be espied floating around on much of the
ware. The Rococo period would, in the opinion of noted porcelain connoisseur Otto Walcha
(1901–1968), have been very much the poorer without the “Swan Service”. Its various items
convey the essence of the age far more aptly than any other porcelain figures from the mid-
18th century.
Johann Friedrich Eberlein created the showy vessel in 1740, presumably
to a design by Kaendler, who knew all there was to know about
ancient mythology. Galatea, the loveliest daughter of Triton, a sea-god
with the body of a fish, was the most popular figurehead for the ancient
Greeks. Here, the seafarer’s protectress holds an ice-water dish for
AMOR AUF SCHWAN
CUPID ON A SWAN
It is not only the porcelain figure’s fluidity of movement that marks
it out as being a child of the Baroque. Johann Joachim Kaendler
modelled it in 1738 for the “Swan Service”.
This vinegar/oil cruet is particularly representative of the synthesis
between the small-format animal statuary and vessel modelling he
achieved in his artistic designs. Kaendler had an extremely imaginative
gift for transcending the functionality of form by means of organic figural
compositions. To this end, he resorted to marine motifs such as
shells, oyster shells, swans and figures from Greek mythology, overarching
themes that fuse a multitude of stylish individual items into a
service of utter grandeur. Kaendler’s notes envisage the swan being
straddled by a child of Triton, a sea-god with the body of a fish. His
contemporaries opted for a cupid instead – in any case, the spirited duo
turn the vessel into a small masterpiece.
It was in the heady realms of the oceans and Greek mythology that
Johann Joachim Kaendler found the overarching themes for the
patterns and shapes in his “Swan Service”.
He spent days drawing copies of various rare shells in the Royal
Natural History Collection at Dresden Palace for use as source material.
They adorn items of the Baroque service as raised detail, feet or
handles in constantly changing permutations. And Kaendler can be
truly said to have modelled no end of sea-shells, one example being his
nutmeg box. It is borne by a bearded individual – is it a seafarer who
shipped the spices from the Moluccans to Europe or is it perhaps a
portrait of Poseidon, the god who protected them en route with such a
precious cargo? Nutmeg was known as “East Indian gold” up until the
18th century, which certainly made it worthwhile creating stylish vessels
in porcelain to store it in.
RUSSISCHES BALLETT
nichts an Faszination eingebüßt.
Paul Scheurich (1883–1945) was as fascinated by the world of theatre as porcelain artists 250
years earlier had been. He produced countless variations on the themes of dance, masquerade,
gallantry and the grotesque – in the Rococo style and modelled to the high degree of
meticulous sophistication so typical of him. MEISSEN ® connoisseur Otto Walcha (1901–
1968) adjudged that porcelain had not been fashioned in such an exuberant, materialresponsive
way since Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706–1775).
The young Paul Scheurich was as thrilled as anyone when Russian ballet took the cities of
Europe by storm in the early 20th century. He was inspired to produce his “Russian Ballet”
figure group upon attending a guest performance of “Carnaval,” based on a piano cycle by
Robert Schumann, at Berlin’s Theater des Westens in 1912. The five Russian male and female
dancers he depicted were his first and his most successful works for MEISSEN ® .
The world-famous dance troupe is now being re-issued in a particularly attractive colour
scheme for our Limited Edition Art Works. Their light-hearted poise, dynamic and weightless,
has lost none of its appeal over the ages. Scheurich freezes his Russian dancers in full
motion – making grand gestures and with skirts and coat-tails flying – as if in a snapshot.
A sculptor pays homage to the art of high dance – still a major challenge for modellers
which they master with great dexterity.
HARLEQUIN AND COLUMBINE
Verliebte Blicke: Das heitere Spiel
zwischen Dantes Harlekin und seiner
Columbine modellierte Scheurich in
unnachahmlicher plastischer Weise nach.
Besotted gazes: Scheurich reproduces
the exuberant jesting between Dante’s
Harlequin and Columbine figures in
inimitable, sensuously haptic fashion.
Probably the most popular couple from the Commedia dell’Arte,
Harlequin and Columbine also played a role in the Russian ballet
performance of “Carnaval” in 1912.
That comes as no surprise given that Robert Schumann had composed
the music shortly after he had broken off his engagement. Paul
Scheurich portrays the infatuated young woman with flowers in her
hair, a plunging neckline and billowing crinoline dress. The life-loving
harlequin, wearing a black mask, blouse, open bowtie and clinging
shirt, woos her with a languorous gaze. Whether he is just about to kiss
her is a moot point, as is the question of who exactly is seducing whom.
Applaus, bitte!
The animal world plays a crucial role overall in the sculptural work of Otto Pilz (1876–
1934). In 1908, he re-interpreted Kaendler’s and Reinicke’s zany Baroque Monkey Orchestra
for MEISSEN ® – through the eyes of his own age and with no end of wit.
Social changes in the early 20th century went hand-in-hand with new departures in art and
music which, in the derogatory view of many, heralded the demise of Western culture and
civilisation. Pilz may have been deriding this conservative approach when he made monkeys
of his musicians. His animals have distinctive character traits rather than being equals
or subordinate parts of an ensemble like their Baroque forebears.
Each musician has its own style: a long-tailed monkey as conductor, a chimpanzee on the
clarinet, Rhesus monkeys on drum and fiddle, an orangutan on the tuba and a Hamadryas
baboon on double bass. With the return of a female orangutan harpist, a chimpanzee on the
horn and a baboon playing the concertina, Pilz’s Monkey Orchestra from 1908 is now once
again complete. Take it away!
VASE MIT MASKARON
VASE WITH MASCARON
Ornamentale Elemente wie
der goldene Maskaron deuten
auf Irmingers ursprünglichen
Beruf als Silberschmied hin.
Ornamental elements such as
the gilded mascaron are indicative
of Irminger originally
having been a silversmith.
In seinem Dresdner
So finden
Böttger Stoneware actually predates Meissen Porcelain ® but fell into
oblivion for almost 200 years after the latter had been invented.
That may seem a little surprising given the expressiveness of the
ware produced in the earliest MEISSEN ® material by Johann Jacob
Irminger (1635–1724), of which this vase is a notable example. Its surface
shimmers like precious wood. The method of ornamentation
adopted reveals Irminger to have been a silversmith by trade. At his
Dresden studio, he judiciously went about making concave copper
moulds of decorative features that were subsequently cast in stoneware
and attached to their host vessels at Albrechtsburg castle. Irminger’s
works are typically populated by rows of acanthus, grotesque masks
(“mascarons”) and female figures – the court silversmith was at great
pains to fashion the precious new material in the most refined manner
conceivable. Mascarons of the kind adorning this vase had been popular
design motifs ever since classical times. They are semi-sculptural
features that were used to allegorically represent or, indeed, to caricaturise
deities and mythical beings. Whereas the moulded detail originally
luted on was of a dark metallic hue, it has been enriched with
brightly radiant gilding on our new covered vase – a splendid demonstration
of the delights to which the MEISSEN ® tradition affords access.
DAS ESSER-PFERD
ESSER’S HORSE
damit ihren Charakter – besonders humorvoll in seinem berühmten
Tafelaufsatz „Reineke Fuchs“.
The great works of art produced at MEISSEN ® have included animal
statuary that has been virtually impossible to produce ever
since the days of Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706–1775).
One of the leading animal sculptors of the 20th century, Max
Esser (1885–1945), continued this tradition whilst at the same time
imbuing his porcelain figures with a wholly modern momentum. He
had his own studio in MEISSEN ® from 1919 onwards, a period that
was his most intensely creative. He had a predilection for modelling
lean animals in full motion and interpreting their nature by this means
– to particularly humorous effect in his famous “Reynard the Fox”
centrepiece. One of his best-known MEISSEN ® figures is his
“Seagull” skimming a wave whilst in flight and his “Otter” casting an
alert glance backwards. The latter was a prizewinner at the 1937
World’s Fair in Paris and was re-issued by MEISSEN ® as a Limited
Edition Art Work in 2013.
Esser’s work reconciles decorative and naturalistic rendition,
sweeping surfaces and realistically elaborated details that serve to
capture single moments of motion. He manages to do this particularly
well in the “Horse II” porcelain sculpture he produced in 1928.
We see the animal with its eyes wide open, nostrils flaring, ears
pricked up and tail down at precisely the moment when it rears up on
its hind legs and shies away – a fascinating study in expression, posture
and motion that marks the difference between art and the mere
mirroring of reality.
An ample bouquet of white roses unfolds its full glory so authentically
on a Palace Vase it almost seems possible to smell its fragrance.
The vessel’s rounded shape heightens the sculptural quality of the
inspired arrangement. Small purple petals and patches of shadow within
the roses create points of focus and instil depth into the pattern, an
excellent form of impressionist flower painting that was at its height
during the naturalist phase at MEISSEN ® in around 1900.
The gentle, tranquil ochre of the ground emphasises the vibrancy of
the roses, which are depicted in all stages of development from bud to
fully-open flower head. The design has been applied to the coloured
ground with delicate brush strokes and a wealth of intricate detail.
Sumptuous ornamental gilding frames a Baroque cartouche. And the
vessel’s finial and rims are coloured in gold – fully in keeping with the
Queen of Flowers.
Die Schönheit der
Porzellan malerei und
Bossierkunst.
The beauty of flowers
and insects faithfully
recreated down to the last
detail – a masterpiece of
porcelain painting and
assembly.
What better way of decorating a perfume burner than with moulded
flower heads abuzz with insects? Supreme modelling and the most
superb porcelain painting complement each other like flora and
fauna on this “potpourri” in the shape of a sugar caster from 1730.
Such whimsically naturalistic patterns on coffee and tea sets were all
the rage in the mid-18th century, when attention began to be given to
insects in all their myriad and beautiful forms for the first time. The
source material was provided by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) in
the form of her “Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium”, a milestone
in both publishing and entomological terms. Its hand-coloured
copperplate engravings were already held in the graphic art collection
at MEISSEN ® in the 18th century. Our intrepid pioneer in the study of
insects demonstrated huge artistic talent with this documentation of
her two-year expedition into the unexplored coastlands to the north of
Brazil. Her eye for the most intricate of detail is particularly engaging
and has been evoked with great empathy in the porcelain’s decoration.
Borders and lacework painted in 23-karat gold serve as a fitting framework
for the precious piece.
In besonders feiner Blumenmalerei
The language of flowers reached Europe from the Ottoman Empire
in the early 18th century.
In her letters from Istanbul, the English authoress Mary Wortly
Montagu (1689–1762) wrote of a sophisticated system of assigning
symbolic meaning to flowers in the Orient. It wasn’t long before it was
very much the fashion amongst courting couples in particular to express
their emotions with flowers. The snowball blossom symbolises
pride, its whiteness innocence and purity besides. The auricula, commonly
known as bear’s ear, stands for persistent wooing, whilst it’s no
secret that roses are equated with love. In particularly fine examples of
floral decoration, the three beautiful species adorn small porcelain receptacles
derived from models produced when Camillo Marcolini
(1739–1814) was Director at MEISSEN ® . Their flower heads rise up
from dainty Rococo feet on the vases. A matt, 23-karat gold ground
underscores the preciousness of the tiny work of art, which can win
hearts whether there is any symbolic force at work or not.
A cobalt-blue hummingbird on an exotic plant stands proud against
the dish’s white well, a splendidly-framed miniature.
Exquisite brocade painting in 23-karat gold encloses a vintage oriental
motif from the manufactory’s very beginnings. Delicate transparent
floral scrolls run over the matt-gold ground as if engraved. This is a case
of tradition meeting modernity, of East meeting West. The brocade
decoration is a glaze technique wholly invented by MEISSEN ® that
was developed in 2013 for a Limited Edition Art Work, the orientally
inspired “Lions of Fo” vase. This is the first time painting has been
performed with glaze, a medium that injects subtle patches of gloss into
the matt gilding. The dark frame of the cobalt-blue border brings out
the full glory of the sumptuous decoration. At the same time, the stylistic
interplay of border and bird motif lends the dish a certain modernity
and oriental refinement.
Die Goldbrokatmalerei ist eine
neue Technik der Manufaktur, die
Gekreuzten Schwerter ® in Kobalt -
blau sind seit fast 300 Jahren ihr
Markenzeichen.
The technique of gold brocade
decoration is new at the manufactory,
whereas the crossed swords in cobalt
blue have been its hallmark for almost
300 years.
Chinas in Peking geehrt.
From early in the 18th century, MEISSEN ® cultivated a passion for
drinking coffee with its exquisite services which, hundred years later,
was celebrated to perfection by the newly affluent middle classes.
These are precisely the people whom Johann Daniel Schöne (1767–
1843) had in mind when he created his elegant Biedermeier set. His
designs are considered masterpieces of European “Enlightenment Art”.
They are also the revered subject of an exhibition of the same name that
has been running since 2011 at China’s National Museum in Beijing.
MEISSEN ® artists have always been committed to the tradition of fulfilling
the most exacting aesthetic and craft aspirations. They have
marked the 200th anniversary of Schöne’s Biedermeier set by embellishing
the shape with a particularly lavish gold-brocade pattern, adopting
a technique only recently developed at MEISSEN ® . Utterly intricate
ornamental effects achieved by applying glaze as paint stand out
gleamingly against a matt ground of 23-karat gold. The sense of depth
in the pattern underscores the set’s stylistic identity to perfection. A
cobalt-blue border band serves to brilliantly focus the exceptional pattern.
A veritably delectable ensemble!
prächtige, aufwendig dekorierte Service „B-Form“ in royalem Gold
Elements of styles from all major epochs between Classical Antiquity
and the Enlightenment combined to form the historicism of
the mid-19th century – a style that met the nascent need for prestige
felt by the newly affluent middle classes.
The work of Ernst August Leuteritz (1818–1893), who took charge
of the Design Department at MEISSEN ® in 1849, was likewise imbued
with the opulent eclecticism of the new movement. He oversaw
the creation of complex figure groups and vessels, stylish centrepieces
and extravagantly embellished tableware services that are designated
using the letter in their original mould classification code.
The particularly splendid, lavishly decorated Shape “B” service in
regal gold and red is a case in point. 23-karat gold has been applied to
the swan’s-head spout, relief moulding and rims. The gold is painted
onto the unglazed porcelain surface by hand and only assumes its
satin-matt sheen after three firings. It sumptuously frames mannerist
flowers painted in the Viennese style – dense floral bouquets in the
subtlest of shades that stand out decoratively against a dark ground.
And, by way of conclusion, the gilding points up a superbly crafted
set of ware that surely deserves to win gold.
WANDSCHALE „BLÜTENRELIEF“
WALL PLATE “FLOWER RELIEF”
Reliefdekore in Mode kamen. Der Leiter des Malateliers bevorzugte
glatte Formen.
In ungewöhnlich kontrastreicher
This shape of plate was only rediscovered a few years ago in the
MEISSEN ® collection owned by Horst Hoffmeister and his brother
Dieter.
It now most felicitously accommodates the disciplines of painting
and sculpture that once vied with one another for supremacy at Europe’s
oldest porcelain manufactory and, in the process, ushered in its
first heyday in around 1730. Hardly had Johann Gregorius Höroldt
(1696–1775) created the wherewithal for painting porcelain in the
subtlest of palettes with his 16 new overglaze colours than reliefmoulded
patterns from France became fashionable. Höroldt, who
was Director of Painting, championed plain shapes and from the very
outset regarded the work of Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706–1775),
court sculptor and ten years his junior, as a source of unwelcome
competition. A plate modelled to the level of absolute excellence,
after all, leaves little scope for creative input by the painter.
Our porcelain painters have proved to be impressively up to the
major challenge posed by the relief moulding. A black-coloured
ground serves to dramatically emphasise the raised flowers. The medallions
are linked and gleamingly enclosed by choice 23-karat gold.
Sections of ornamental interlacing in shades of pink are matched by
tiny flowers strewn about as if at random. The painting and moulded
detail become fused into one in an uncommonly stark combination of
colours – proof that opposites can attract to facilitate artistic feats of
the highest order.
MEISSEN ® erstmals entsprechende Kannen.
Tablett.
It’s usual to drink an Italian espresso standing up and virtually on
the move. An oriental mocha, by contrast, subtly enhanced with
cardamom, cinnamon or cloves, needs to be celebrated in a more
stylish manner.
Arabica “mocha” beans, named after the port of Al Mukha on the
Red Sea, were first shipped to Europe via Venice in the 17th century.
Stoked by fanciful notions of fabulous oriental splendour, drinking
mocha became fashionable as part of an emerging craze for all things
Turkish. MEISSEN ® first produced pots for the purpose in around
1735. One of them is now once again the focus of attention in this gem
of a déjeuner in Oman red. Our artists derived the inspiration for this
shade of red, only recently developed by MEISSEN ® , from the chromatic
diversity of Arabic art. The ground colour is in essence a symbiosis
of oriental cultural versatility and craftsmanship skills from
MEISSEN ® . It lends the service an unobtrusive opulence whilst perfectly
setting off the decorative detail applied. Exotic birds in pure gold
with sepia shading herald a new approach to ornithological decoration.
They have been pared down to the bare essentials so as to whimsically
complement the opulent handles and the gilded tray.
Fond in tiefem Altrosa gezaubert. Seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts
ist die naturalistische Blumenmalerei in der Manufaktur
Meissen zu höchster Perfektion gereift. In immer neuen Variationen
unterstreichen.
These wild roses are not, unfortunately, fragrant. They make up for
that, though, by looking better on the perfectly styled Baroque handled
vase by Ernst August Leuteritz (1818–1893) than even the most
imposing bouquet of flowers.
The finest of brush strokes have been used to coax them onto the
extravagant deep-pink ground in an almost photographically real manner.
Naturalistic flower painting has been moving ever closer to perfection
since the mid-19th century at the Meissen manufactory. The characteristic
properties of flora and fauna have been expertly captured on
porcelain in never-ending variants. Highly decorative use is made of the
play of light and shadow and of extreme graduations of colour to
render every last detail to a particularly appealing degree.
A gooseberry bush in the background creates a sense of optical
depth whilst also evoking the feel of a snapshot from a country garden.
The curves of the vase potentiate the sculptural effect achieved whilst
the bountiful rosebush is framed by a whimsical gilt cartouche. The
24-karat gold used for the ornamental detail has additionally been
tooled, thus underscoring the vase’s preciousness.
VASE “HUNTING SCENES AFTER RIDINGER”
Momentaufnahme zwischen Jäger
und Beute: Die Parforcejagd,
die Hetzjagd mit Hunden und
Pferden, war im 18. Jahrhundert
beim Adel sehr beliebt.
Quintessential moment between
hunter and quarry: par force
hunting, in which game is hunted
down by dogs and horses, was
very popular with the 18th century
aristocracy.
Macht, meisterhaft in Szene gesetzt.
The Saxon Elector and manufactory founder Augustus the Strong
shared two major passions with his son Augustus III – for the fine
arts and for hunting. These are simultaneously symbols of a worldliness
and power most lavishly articulated in their hunting lodge at
Hubertusburg.
The ravages of the Seven Years’ War had put an end to all such pomp
by 1761, however. It is accordingly all the more amazing that all nine
priceless MEISSEN ® mantelshelf vases have survived to the present
day. Two of them are part of a private American collection, three are
owned by Warsaw’s Royal Castle and four by Dresden’s Porcelain Collection.
They were modelled by Johann Joachim Kaendler. Talented
Höroldt pupil Johann Georg Heintze consummately adorned them
with highly detailed par force hunting scenes based on copperplate engravings
by Johann Elias Ridinger, famous for his ability to capture the
essence of a moment.
MEISSEN ® made delivery of the famous series to crown the St.
Hubert’s Day celebrations on 3 November 1739. It was one of these
magnificent covered vases that provided the source material for the
new limited edition, which is as finely painted as the original and to
which a huntsman imperiously finishing off a predatory wolf is attached
– a most masterfully dramatised symbol of power.
Von Löwenfinck’s world
of fantasy, painted in
underglaze blue and
superimposed with gold
brocade decoration devised
by MEISSEN ® .
This vase combines the most diverse of MEISSEN ® painting techniques
to notable effect.
A fanciful scene of birds and flowers has been quite delightfully
painted in underglaze blue, for instance. The mythical creatures in cartouches
are typical of Adam Friedrich von Löwenfinck (1714–1754),
probably the most gifted pupil of Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696–
1775). A broad ring of sumptuous gold brocade decoration provides a
fitting framework for the tiny masterpieces, a technique that Adam
Friedrich von Löwenfinck could not have adopted even in his wildest
dreams, as it has only recently been perfected by MEISSEN ® . The overall
composition nonetheless echoes his talent for producing decorative
detail of just the right scale for the shape of a piece. Despite being a mere
thirteen when he joined Höroldt’s studio in 1727, he soon revealed his
great gift for adding a sense of vibrancy to ornamental blue-on-white.
His surreal overglaze motifs in colours – chinoiseries and mythical
creatures for the most part – take on an almost graphic quality through
his distinctive method of outlining them. He is one of the few porcelain
painters to have had an artistic idiom all his own. Indeed, it wasn’t long
before his virtuosity and powers of imagination began to rival those of
his mentor. Recognition and a commensurate level of pay nevertheless
continued to elude him. Matters came to a head in 1736 when one of his
lavishly decorated vases was valued at the rate for plain blue-on-white,
causing him to leave the Manufactory at the age of twenty-two – a major
artistic loss! Fortunately, his designs have been preserved in the
MEISSEN ® archives and have now, in a unique fusion with blue-onwhite
and gold brocade, really come into their own again.
Exquisitely decorated boxes for the storage of snuff were exceedingly
popular in the 18th century.
The new form of enjoying tobacco hailed from France and soon became
fashionable throughout Europe – with snuff boxes to match.
These precious gems – which were just as much status symbols then as
gold cigarette lighters are now – were used by men of the world to carry
their tobacco around with them. The seascape painting on the cover of
the present specimen has been executed with extraordinary finesse and
attention to detail. Lavish gilt cartouches enclose the harbour scenes,
which depict Turkish, Chinese and Dutch merchants surrounded by
barrels and bales of merchandise. The hustle and bustle of a schooner
port of the time really comes to life in the fanciful scenario depicted on
the top of the box.
The box opens up to reveal a sumptuous fruit still life on the inside
of its cover – a miniature painting that is given added radiance by the
24-karat gold with which the whole of the inside of the box has been
embellished. What may at first sight appear to be a diatribe on healthy
eating versus tobacco consumption is actually just a whimsical conceit
of the sort much beloved in those days. It is also expressive of the indulgent
extravagance of Baroque life, in which nothing was done by halves.
VASE „DRACHEN MIT KANTE“
DRAGON VASE WITH BORDER DECORATION
Seit ihrer Gründung gehört
der chinesische Ming-Drache
zu den populärsten Dekoren
der Manufaktur. In Gold
auf Kobaltblau ist das Motiv
jedoch ein Novum.
The Chinese Ming Dragon
has always been one of the
most popular patterns at the
manufactory. It’s never been
rendered in gold on cobalt
blue before, however.
Ming dragons with their flaming pearls symbolise happiness and
new beginnings, strength, fertility and imperial power.
According to Chinese mythology, they are one of the four species of
chimeric beast that were at the side of Pangu, the primordial being,
when the world was created. They possess magical forces and are very
long-lived – especially the ones made by MEISSEN ® . They have lost
none of their attraction as a means of decorating porcelain over the past
three centuries. Traditional tableware services and individual items of
MEISSEN ® depict a great many variations on the theme: the “Opulent
Court Dragon” in red, for instance, was originally only ever applied to
porcelain for the royal court. The “Flaming Ming Dragon” with pearl
ornament became exceedingly popular later on. But this is the first time
the motif has appeared in glistening 23-karat gold and platinum on a
cobalt-blue ground. Never in the manufactory’s 300-year-plus history
has it been immortalised on porcelain in such a splendid and precious
manner. Differing types of gold have been used to render the dragon’s
scales in varying degrees of shininess, thus evoking a particularly compelling
sense of plasticity. The upshot does full justice to an elegant vase
based on a classicist design of unsurpassed harmony, clarity and flow by
Ernst August Leuteritz (1818–1893). The symbolic force of these mythical
oriental beings is conveyed with expressive aplomb on the vase.
TEEDOSE „CHINOISERIEN
NACH HÖROLDT“
TEA BOX “CHINOISERIES AFTER HÖROLDT”
Höroldts Fantasien vom
Fernen Osten begründeten
die Chinamode
in ganz Europa – und
wurden Meisterwerke
der Porzellankunst.
Höroldt’s whimsical
notions of the Far East
triggered “Chinamania”
throughout Europe – and
became masterpieces of
porcelain art.
Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696–1775) is regarded as being the
most important porcelain painter of all time.
As well as developing the first palette of 16 usable colours for overglaze
decoration at MEISSEN ® , he also authored a number of fundamental
styles of painting on porcelain. His chinoiseries were a major
feat. The brilliant artist produced drawings designed to serve as graphic
sources that mirror the image of China held by Europeans in the Baroque
Age – the notions of a man, it has to be said, who never actually
set foot in the “Middle Kingdom”. The products of his imagination
were, when committed to Meissen Porcelain ® , to fan a China mania
throughout Europe. The original drawings are known as the “Schulz
Codex” and were first shown in their entirety of 132 sheets in 1996, on
the occasion of Höroldt’s 300th birthday celebrations. “Chinoiseries
after Höroldt” have continued to be masterpieces of porcelain art to the
present day – produced authentically only by MEISSEN ® , as on this
classic tea canister, whose gilded borders provide a fitting framework
for the majestic motifs they enclose.
FLAKON „CHINESEN
UND INDISCHE BLÜMCHEN“
FLACON “CHINESE AND INDIAN FLOWERS”
Mit Motiven aus dem Reich
der Mitte, wie „Fächerchinesen“
und ostasiatische
Blumen, wurde Stadler
berühmt.
Stadler achieved fame with
motifs from the Middle
Kingdom, notably “fanbearing
Chinese figures” and
oriental flowers.
The Flacon “Chinese and Indian flowers”, which echoes an ancient
covered vessel of oriental origin, is compellingly clean-lined.
Its shape and decoration with miniatures have a surprisingly modern
look. Four canted sides contain chinoiseries based on motifs by
Johann Ehrenfried Stadler (1701–1741), famous for his “fan-bearing
Chinese figures” – festively clad individuals who drift around gardens
carrying sunshades or fans. Stadler is one of the best porcelain painters
specialising in oriental flowers and figural scenes there has ever been.
He painted his subjects from a European perspective in much the same
way as his artist-in-chief Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696–1775),
whom he worked under at Meissen from 1724 onwards. Neither of
them ever actually experienced the “Middle Kingdom”.
The particular appeal of Stadler’s style of painting is that, unlike
Höroldt’s chinoiseries, it invariably has a graphic, two-dimensional
quality. He uses the finest of brush strokes to create a succession of
parallel areas of coloured hatching like the threads in a piece of silk
embroidery – with an aplomb that he acquired as a faience painter with
Eggebrecht in Dresden. Only a few signed items of his are still extant
– in the “Art Collection of the Rich Citizens of the Golden Age” in the
Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam and in the porcelain collection held by
MEISSEN ® : little gems that are as alluring now as they ever were.
DOSE, REICHE INDISCHE MALEREI
BOX WITH OPULENT “INDIAN” DECORATION
Für die raffinierte Neuinterpretation der
Indischen Malerei auf der runden Dose
genügen drei Farbtöne.
Just three colours are all that’s needed
for the clever re-interpretation of the
“Indian” painting on this box.
So galten
When Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492 with the aim of
reaching a Chinese port town via the western sea route, he entered
the words “beyond India” in the ship’s log.
Anything to the east of India was still referred to as “India Meridionalis”
and “India Superior” in the early 16th century, and these terms
remained common parlance for quite a while thereafter. Thus all porcelain
pieces imported from China and Japan for Augustus the Strong’s
collection were designated as being “Indian” and their flower and chimeric
beast patterns as “Indian” or “Indies” painting.
The porcelain painter Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696–1775) created
the prerequisites for the further development of this style of painting
at Meissen by identifying the formulae for 16 new overglaze enamels
in the 1720s. Just three colours are nevertheless all that’s needed for
the clever re-interpretation of the genre on this covered box. Dark
black iridesces through the glaze. Hushed grey and intense purple are
painted over the glaze prior to the second firing to yield oriental flower-and-bird
motifs that stand out imposingly against the deep black
beneath in concert with the purple cover. It is this stark contrast – unusual
in “Indian” designs – that lends the traditional pattern its modernity
and expressive force. Particularly appealing use is made of subtle
nuancing and platinum highlights to the same end.
JAPANER IM TEEHAUS
JAPANESE COUPLE IN THE TEAHOUSE
Ein Moment der Innigkeit und
Intimität: Der Jugendstil-Künstler
Alfred Otto König war begeistert
von asiatischer Ästhetik.
A moment of fervour and intimacy: the
art nouveau artist Alfred Otto König
was greatly enamoured of Eastern
aesthetics.
Porzellan, dessen Export aufgrund kriegerischer Auseinandersetzungen
in Südchina stockte.
in Dresden erhalten.
It was a thirst for adventure and foreign parts that took Zacharias
Wagner from Dresden to Asia – and onto the trail of the white gold
– midway through the 17th century.
In his post as commissioner and ambassador to the Dutch East
Indies Company, he was on the lookout for alternative sources of
supply for Chinese porcelain, exports of which had faltered due to
fighting in southern China. In 1659, he stumbled across a quantity of
stylish ceramics in Japan which he proceeded to ship back to Europe. A
number of items from Augustus the Strong’s holdings still form part of
the porcelain collection at Dresden today. They have been inspiring
artists from MEISSEN ® for the past 300 years. Alfred Otto König
(1871–1940), one of the leading modellers of small-format works in the
art nouveau style, was likewise fascinated by the great aesthetic value
and inherent tranquillity of oriental ceremony.
An Asian woman bends down towards her husband and pours him
a drink from her small flask. Their traditional silk garments are decorated
with fish as a symbol of affluence and coloured red to indicate a
festive occasion. The clothing and scenery seem alien and exotic, the
intensity and intimacy of the couple’s gestures oddly familiar – an interplay
as enticing as that between two key porcelain cultures.
Erst durch die filigrane
der Spielszene
It is the meticulous
painted detail that really
conveys the emotions felt
by these children at play.
Michel Victor Acier (1736–1799) was a sculptor from Versailles and,
as such, somewhat more up-to-date than the comparatively provincial
Saxons. The middle-class themes he introduced at MEISSEN ®
accorded with a new age of sentimentality.
He replaced spontaneous gestures with heartfelt poses in his time as
artistic director and successor to Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706–
1775). He paid greater attention to opulently decorated costumes than
to his figures’ bodies. He modelled his charming “Joys of Childhood”
couple in 1775, at a time when the ideas of Rousseau and the Enlightenment
were widespread in Europe. Childhood was for the first time
viewed as a phase of development in its own right and the free unfolding
of character as the basis for a fulfilled life. The educational value of
playing became a subject for discussion. Whereas scant regard had been
given to the very young as self-contained personalities hitherto, Acier
filled his scenes with a wealth of detail and feeling – very much in the
spirit of his age. His “Joys of Childhood” marks a turning point, porcelain
cherubs and infant angels being spurned in favour of child figures
that soon became coveted collectors’ items.
in Szene setzen ließ. Die Idee dafür fand er im Renaissance-Roman
„Hypnerotomachia Poliphili“. Und der Sockel war schlicht für die
Standsicherheit notwendig.
The elephant balances a toweringly high obelisk on its richly embellished
saddlecloth. The way the animal is bracing its body is indicative
of the power, concentration and intelligence the world’s major
civilisations have always accorded it.
Its quick-thinking ways caused Western antiquity to regard it as being
the mount of the god Mercury. In Asia and Africa it symbolises
wisdom, peace and happiness. It is its qualities of meekness and helpfulness,
by contrast, that are emphasised in the Greco-Roman region.
Due to its great longevity, finally, the elephant is universally seen to
epitomise the overcoming of death. There are nevertheless far more
mundane reasons for a pedestalled sculpture having been made of it.
The MEISSEN ® model of an elephant supporting an obelisk draws on
a theme that the architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini had already put to
effect in 1677 on Rome’s Piazza della Minerva. He found the idea for
his creation in the popular Renaissance novel “Hypnerotomachia
Poliphili”. The pedestal was needed on grounds of stability alone. “It
takes a strong mind to handle wisdom” is the gist of the inscription.
The sculpture, modelled in porcelain by Peter Reinicke (1711–1768)
in around 1743, acquired added meaning in Baroque Saxony as a eulogy
to Augustus the Strong and his son, who combined power with
wisdom to usher in an unprecedented period of economic and cultural
glory in Electoral Saxony. Peter Reinicke, who, along with Johann
Joachim Kaendler (1706–1775), laid the foundations for the wealth of
MEISSEN ® shapes, modelled several versions of his elephant, including
one ridden by a Turkish sultan and one by a Moorish man. Without
a doubt, though, the creature is at its most impressive when surmounted
by such a lofty, intricately wrought obelisk – a symbol of wisdom
and of life.
WANDGEMÄLDE „BLÜTENSINFONIE“
WALL PLAQUE “FLOWER SYMPHONY”
Lebendige Blüten und Insekten, ganz in der
Tradition der „europäischen Blumenmalerei“.
Lifelike flowers and insects, wholly in the
tradition of “European Flower Painting”.
The full glory of spring unfolds in an almost palpable way in this
bouquet of tulips, anemones and apple blossom.
Artist Heike Wuttke makes great use of contrast in placing bold tulips
in the colours of the rising sun amidst delicate pink apple blossom
and blueish-violet anemones. Her overglaze painting technique causes
the blossom to stand out colourfully against its pale-blue background,
whose soft frosty tones recall the winter just passed. The sun has finally
managed to drive Jack Frost away and take his place but is now in
danger of being outshone by flowers as it goads bumble bees and butterflies
into making their first forays.
The subject matter echoes the beginnings of “European Flower
Painting,” which superseded “Indian” flower patterns based on oriental
sources in around 1735 at MEISSEN ® . Images from the fascinating
world of insects populated a great many floral designs, reflecting the
burgeoning interest shown by naturists in moths, bugs etc. at the time.
With its vibrant modern interpretations of naturalistic motifs,
MEISSEN ® is upholding tradition whilst enchanting porcelain and
flower lovers in equal measure.
„HORTENSIENBLÜTE FEUERWERK“
WALL PLAQUE “FIREWORKS HYDRANGEA“
Bei der „Blickweißmalerei“
wird das Weiß in mehreren
feinen Schichten aufgemalt.
“Lightened-white painting”
is a technique whereby the
colour white is applied in
several fine layers.
The stellar flower head of the hydrangea species fittingly called
“Fireworks” recalls a shower of sparks.
Porcelain painter Horst Bretschneider has managed particularly
well to capture this splendid flower in his picture, executed in the tradition
of “European Flower Painting”. It was not until Johann Gregorius
Höroldt (1696–1775) succeeded in expanding the range of overglaze
colours in the first third of the 18th century that this style superseded
the less complex “Indian” motifs based on oriental models. Bretschneider
has used fine underglaze colours to create a visually very effective
shadow around the hydrangea. Its bright, naturalistically painted flower
heads stand out against this background as though they were threedimensional.
A specialised type of overglaze decoration is adopted to
spirit this effect onto the porcelain. The upshot is a captivatingly realistic
interpretation of Nature.
Murals on porcelain have a
long tradition at MEISSEN ® ,
where their production is the
preserve of a select few.
Napoleon Bonaparte and Charles X were just two of the clients who
commissioned work from the Dutch flower-and-fruit painter Jan
Frans van Dael (1774–1840).
He worked very successfully in Paris from 1786 onwards. His pictures
can now be admired in the Hermitage Museum at St. Petersburg,
the Lyon Museum or the Louvre – as well as on Meissen Porcelain ® .
Works by celebrated artists have been copied by the cream of porcelain
painters since the 18th and 19th centuries. Picture painting is one of the
highest arts practised at the manufactory, one that none but a very few
staff with long-standing experience and exceeding aptitude are versed
in. Faithfully copying a painting onto porcelain presupposes absolute
mastery of both the brush and the entire range of colours, qualities
clearly evidenced in “Still Life with Flowers and Fruit”: a magnificent
work of art for the home that, unlike the original, will never fade or lose
its sheen.
Das Dekor nimmt Bezug
auf die Traditionen der
Elbregion – und irritiert
den Betrachter mit
Trompe-l’Œil-Effekten.
The decorative detail
cites traditions from the
river Elbe region – and
has a baffling trompel’oeil
effect.
Blick auszumachen. Raffiniert schlägt das Motiv den Bogen zwischen
Porzellankunst und barocker Lebensfreude. Seit über 800 Jahren hat
der Weinanbau entlang der Elbe Tradition. Deutschlands kleinstes
Wein anbaugebiet glänzt mit Klasse statt Masse. In schönster Landschaft
Elbe manch edler Tropfen.
MEISSEN ® artist Horst Bretschneider raises naturalistic porcelain
painting to the status of optical illusion by juggling around with levels
of focus, luminous reflection, shadow and chromatic intensity.
The vines and leaves on his hand-thrown vase are so realistically
moulded as to be virtually edible. Very close scrutiny is required to
make out the transition from sculpted to painted decoration. The subject
matter ingeniously makes the link between porcelain art and the
Baroque zest for life. The tradition of cultivating wine along the Elbe
goes back more than 800 years. Quality comes before quantity in
Germany’s smallest wine-growing region. The makings of many a fine
drop flourish on steep terraces interspersed with ancient stone walls in
what is a truly idyllic riverside setting.
No wonder that, as well as living out his passion for the fine arts,
Augustus the Strong also had country estates and pleasure palaces built
here, locations at which it is still the custom today to produce superb
wines and live a life of culture. The decorative detail on the vase makes
reference to regional traditions – and uses trompe-l’oeil effects to play
tricks on the beholder. You see the grapes double without even drinking
a drop of fine Saxon wine.
Mit freier Hand und in
eine Landschaft im Stil
japanischer Holzschnitte.
A landscape in the style
of Japanese woodcuts is
fashioned free-hand in
japanischen Holzschnitt inspirieren, dessen Ausgewogenheit
The scene painted by Hans Rudolf Hentschel (1869–1951), who,
along with his brother Konrad Hentschel, was one of the leading
exponents of art nouveau at Meissen, captures a moment of tranquillity
and peace.
Whereas Konrad enthusiastically embraced modelling and went on
to create his famous “Hentschel Children” figurines, his elder brother
turned to painting. He returned to MEISSEN ® after studying art in
Munich and Paris and acquired a special liking for tranquil landscape
images whose magically sensitive chromatic structuring draws the beholder
into their inner depths. Like many art nouveau painters, it may
have been a traditional Japanese woodcut that inspired him to produce
“Girl by the River with Cherry Blossom”. Such works possessed a
sense of balance and oneness with nature that proved particularly compelling
at a time when industrialisation was at its height. Japanese cherry
blossom stands for beauty, emergence and contemplation –
Hentschel’s art is thus still as engrossing as ever.
WANDSCHALE „DAME MIT PELIKAN“
WALL PLATE “LADY WITH PELICAN”
Beschwingtes, leichtes
Malen statt perfekter
Darstellung war das
Markenzeichen von
Willi Münch-Khe.
Willi Münch-Khe’s style of
painting had more to do
with light-hearted flourishes
than with any sense
of flawless rendition.
The painter, graphic artist and sculptor Willi Münch-Khe (1885–
1961) was only a fully-fledged MEISSEN ® employee for one year.
It was during that year, in 1912, that the Karlsruhe Art Academy
graduate produced his “Woman with Pelican” wall plate – in his own
distinctive form of art nouveau. His flowing, breezy style of painting,
which can already be seen in his early designs for the Karlsruhe Majolica
Factory, reveals his having been a pupil of Ludwig Schmid- Reutte
and Hans Thoma. The art nouveau movement developed organically
linear floral motifs and ornaments as a means of symbolising the beauty
and uniqueness of Nature, with women and birds rendered in similar
manner. Willi Münch-Khe distanced himself from the mystificatory dimension
of this approach, which was prone to yield kitsch, with a
pinch of irony encapsulated in his use of exaggeration. The woman and
the pelican gaze deep into each other’s eyes as if in love. Is it to protect
or take possession of the woman that the green-crested bird wraps its
wings around her naked body? That’s left to the beholder to decide. In
later years, Willi Münch-Khe also created numerous stylish animal
models in a freelance capacity for MEISSEN ® – including, in the late
1920s, his famous literary figures Peter Schlemihl, Archivist Lindhorst
and Till Eulenspiegel, who all appear to share his own witty angle on
the world.
MEISSEN ® is a synonym for high-value, handcrafted art objects in
porcelain. Every piece is unique in its form and décor and reflects the
style of the modeller and painter; minor deviations from the pictures in
the catalogue only underline that these works are made individually by
hand. The measurements of the objects are also subject to minor variations
due to the ceramic process.
