imagetanz 2013
bringen.
imagetanz 2013
Festival for Choreography, Performance and Cosmic Issues
The imagetanz festival has been around for more than 20 years and is interested in finding the
moment when choreography and society clash – ideally with the greatest willingness to take
risks. Every year the tagline harbours a motto which, at the same time, serves as a loose framework.
In this sense, the imagetanz 2013 festival is marked by galactic, universal, primordial
material, spherical, eternal, and future aspects. The theme of science fiction is thus bound to
occur and becomes particularly interesting when the vision has already become part of the past.
Presumably only the bare body remains on a material level as the last human, primordial
material substrate; on an immaterial level, however, remains only the spirit – or mind & spirit:
both levels play recurring roles in the festival. Fertilisation, mothers, and black holes touch the
themes of continuity and suggest that the event horizon never disappears. Maybe only viewing it
from a large distance and a bit of esoteric for lubrication can bring the true meaning of current
earthly problems to light.

The Humping Pact. Vienna Mission
„Auch Gebäude brauchen Liebe.” Heute
In körperintensiven Interventionen
http://humpingpact.com, www.facebook.com/ humpingpact?ref=hl
“Buildings need love, too.” Heute
Diego Agulló’s & Dmitry Paranyushkin’s Humping Pact is a covenant between sex and architecture.
In body-intensive interventions, the two performers mate, mount, and copulate with
public buildings. Through these hump-ins of the selected objects, they get to know and love the
mostly old structures. An intimate, personal relationship to the architectural sites comes into
being which celebrates the human body, its longing for exploration, dissemination, and
stimulation. The Humping Pact is an aesthetic meditation on the nature of dissemination,
illusions of greatness, and the human desire to believe in the senseless and conceive the impossible.
After Diego Agulló & Dmitry Paranyushkin have already indecently assaulted the law courts
in Brussels, a former Soviet military base in Latvia, and an abandoned coal mine among others
locations, places such as Schönbrunn Palace or brut itself will become the objects of desire during
their Vienna Mission.
On 8 March the two artists will prove that they not only like close contact to buildings, but are
also keen for the turntables. Following the performance of Spirit by Florentina Holzinger &
Vincent Riebeek, DJs Blue Cosmic Hand and Yellow Galactic Star invite you to the brut bar im
Künstlerhaus to the imagetanz opening party.

Dank an Bernadette Müller und Nicole Schuchardt.
Dmitry Paranyushkin and Diego Agulló, the co-isolated bubble family of transcendental cells
ascending from the common history of work and common practice of friendship. The first
encounter happened in Berlin 2007 but the two instances did not really merge until December
2009, when the actual fusion was protracted. After several journeys and trips into the depths
of subconscious, Kunstfabrik, Performing Arts Forum, Arsenal Gallery, Uferhallen, Sophiensaele
and PACT Zollverein, they are ready more than ever to continue its existence with renewed
fervor. Combining both air and water in its work, they do not belong to either male or female.
Rather it positions itself in the volatile ground between sexes, opinions, matters, and meanings.
It is interested in exploring asymptotic motion: always approaching but never penetrating
the surface of the other. In other words, the path of the heart full of belief and commitment,
but escaping unnecessary complications that rarely, but surely happen upon landing.
Spirit
After their hit No Applause for Shit at imagetanz 2012 and their breathtaking surprise performance
on New Year’s Eve, the now internationally successful performers Florentina Holzinger and
Vincent Riebeek will be staging Spirit, an ode to believing and spirituality. Spirit is hard liquor and
a radical-theatre experience about spiritual life. The seductive duo Holzinger & Riebeek embarks
on a tour of discovery through Eastern philosophy, pop culture, tarot, psychomagic, and Cirque
du Soleil. They want to passionately believe each other, the audience, and the performance. With
much conviction, it creates a spectacle that relentlessly provides insights into unseen spheres and
thus repeatedly confronts with the tension between timidity and curiosity.
H. G. Wells, The Island of Doctor Moreau
Was würde vom
John Carpenter
gewidmet.
“You will perhaps understand that at first everything was so strange about me, and my position
was the outcome of the relative strangeness of this or that thing about me.”
H. G. Wells, The Island of Doctor Moreau
“Roads? Where we‘re going we don‘t need roads.” Back to the future
Two “evolved” human beings are in an undefined space/time dimension, drifting through the
vast dark cosmos. This trip is not after something, nor for any reason in particular. It‘s more
like a proof of paradox, of the absurdity and contradiction of human culture and the nature of
organisms. The two travelers are about to discover other ‘spaces’ connected to old human ideas of
„land“, „home“, „being foreign“, „being alien“ which will unravel lost and puzzling concepts, such
as „belonging“ and „ownership“- memories of the material world drifting in space as archeological
artifacts of an exhausted language. What would remain of the body and of the language in a
post-colonial space odyssey? Dedicated to: John Carpenter
Gérald Kurdian (Paris)
1999
wahre Utopie.
Snippets from the 48 episodes of the TV series Space: 1999 from the 1970s are the occasion for
the one-man show by French performer, songwriter, and radio artist Gérald Kurdian. Between
fragments of tango and mambo dances, love chansons, and self-written songs, Kurdian narrates
the action of a science fiction film that has yet to be realised and invariably assumes all the
roles and figures himself. The movers and shakers of the music industry appear: Kurdian carries
out a smooth transformation from performer to composer, from graphic designer to video-clip
director and artistic manager. He moves confidently in a setting of technical apparatuses, musical
instruments and slide-show equipment. With his lo-fi arrangements and minimalistic actions, the
musical do-it-yourselfer Kurdian sings praises for the charm of the unfinished as the true utopia.
composing sound scores for their choreographic work or assisting them dramaturgically.
In 2006, Kurdian collaborated with the Atelier de Creation Radiophonique/Radio France and
Monkeymind
In seiner Konzertperformance schlüpft Simon Mayer, seines
Monkeymind is a Buddhist term that designates a restless, moody, inventive, and creative spirit. In
his concert performance, Simon Mayer – himself a former member of the ballet of the
Viennese State Opera, performing country chap, and artistic director of the art festival Spiel
[Game] on the organic farm Schlossergütl in Upper Austria – slips into the role of the Monkeymind.
The strange eccentric is fighting desperately to be understood. He tries to narrate something very
The Irrepressibles (London)
Album Release: NUDE
hingebungsvolle und rebellische Show.
After the 2012 Bluebird Festival spoke of them in high terms, calling them “certainly one of the
most innovative bands of the current music scene”, brut now has the pleasure of welcoming the
art-pop orchestra from London in March. They will present their second album NUDE: a combination
of electronic sounds, classical instruments, and the human voice as direct path into the
unconscious. Jamie McDermott – singer and visual artist – combines extravagant choreography,
light installations, and highly emotional texts in order to take the audience along a journey
through the self and time. Inspired by musicians such as Chris Isaak, Neil Young, and Röyksopp –
and often compared with monumental artists such as David Bowie or Antony and the
Johnsons – “The Irrepressibles” will be performing a devoted and rebellious show. It is live “that
the collective’s entire powers of creation flourish, composed of baroque-inspired melodies, theatrical
staging, and precise choreography.” (laut.de).
The Irrepressibles, as their name describes, are all about rebellion. They are an orchestra comprised
of pop musicians, performance artists and classically trained players; led by singer, composer
and visual-artist Jamie McDermott. The Irrepressibles create what could be considered the ultimate
“Art Pop”. They are lively, defiant and socially pertinent and perform a fusion of intoxicating
music, dance and art. The Irrepressibles collide sound and visuals into a truly post-modern
expression of music. Choreographed by McDermott, the orchestra move and breathe into performance;
responding directly to his music, as they play in bespoke costumes within interactive
set designs and unique lighting installations. This audio-visual fantasy, was described by the
Sunday Times as “an enchantingly theatrical pop extravaganza”, and The Independent labeled
The Irrepressibles as “one of Britain’s best kept secrets”.

Radek Hewelt (Wien)
Substitute show
http://radekhewelt.blogspot.co.at/
In Substitute show, Polish performer Radek Hewelt embarks on a personal journey back in time
into his past and ends up in communist Poland. The political and economic crisis has a tight grip
on the country, but the young man’s ardent wish to found a punk band is stronger. The only
problem: an electric guitar is neither to be found nor affordable. Necessity is the mother of
invention, so a tennis racket is simply converted into an instrument which magical sounds can
be charmed out of. Thirty years later, again in crisis-torn times, Radek Hewelt remembers such
almost forgotten skills – not to make a guitar this time, but to create a performance. Do-it-yourself
is the motto and creating something out of nothing is the aim.
Never Name the Shelf
In Never Name the Shelf, Tiina Sööt and Dorothea Zeyringer examine a notion of work which
does not comply with the desire for a concrete result. The two of them observe the working
process of assembling furniture with the utmost concentration and in the process shift the focus
from the real aim of the procedure – the completed object – toward the sequences of movement
for assembly. Each hand movement is translated into linguistic instructions and makes the proximity
between work and worker clearly noticeable. A choreographic work sequence that revises
the relationship between production and product.
Deborah Hazler (Wien)
Anthropology of Man
http://thisboyschallenge.wordpress.com.
In Anthropology of Man, Deborah Hazler puts herself into the lives of fictional men and
authentically imitates them. Through her empathy for masculine corporealities and emotions,
she approaches the question of at which point a man is recognisable as such. Among others, she
mutates into male types such as the nerdy hipster who passionately indulges in the literaryalternative
lifestyle of the beat poets. Or into the 17-year-old Richard Rogers who undergoes
intense muscle-building training with the intention to impress girls and documents his life on his
blog: http://thisboyschallenge.wordpress.com.
Back in 2010, Deborah Hazler tested on her own body various ideals and conditions of masculinity
in her solo piece Deborah Does Male. She presented herself again very physically with Nanina
Kotlowski and Kerstin Olivia Schellander at imagetanz 2011 in the work offnature, which put a
damper on the voyeuristic view on the female body with irony and exaggeration.
TALIN, MARY KATE & ME

sitting with their babies in a surreal-poetic landscape of grass and moss and do what they always
do day-in, day-out: they sustain their children. Yet at the same time they are doing something
completely different: their daily routine becomes an experiment in the theatre space, a play with
their roles as mothers and artists. For this project, French artist and stage designer Lise Lendais –
known in the Viennese performance scene since her cooperation with Anne Juren at the latest –
exchanged experiences across the distance with artists Talin and Mary Kate about their daily
routines as mothers and their needs as individuals and documented these on the Internet.
Lise Lendais was born in France and developed her first work in Belgium. Now she lives and
studied at the National School of Applied Art in Paris ENSAD (École Nationale Supérieure des
Arts Décoratifs). She has been trained in scenography but layed no claim to any title. Rather,
she believes in the undisciplined, active, and responsible participation of the protagonists in
the project. Lise aims an independent theatre that takes part in daily life. The tools she dreams
of for this adventure are made of games, of experimental fields, and of performers. It is the
living body in the entirety of its capacities what is of interest. While working as costume or set
