In an age without the Internet or the telephone,
letters were the only way of keeping
in touch with family and friends back
home. This has been very helpful to historical
research, which has a great deal of
firsthand written accounts of daily life in
America to fall back on. Visits to or from
Germany were very much the exception
until the mid-20th century, largely because
of the expensive and arduous journey.
Photographs were a substitute for perso-
nal encounters. People could see children
growing up, and their parents and family
growing older, or they could turn emigration
into a success story by posing, proudly
and well-nourished, in front of their
very own house in the New World. Presents
sent in both directions also kept
people aware of each other Ÿ and in times
of war or crisis, packages sent from America
provided very welcome support.
nach Newark/New Jersey ausgewandert.
n Successful emigrants were often generous to people in their home
country. Karl Kirchner distributed gold coins to the children of Otterberg
during his visits. There he was given the nickname „Goldonkel“
(„golden uncle“). Karl Kirchner emigrated to Newark, New Jersey in
1853 while still under age. Karl Kirchner (1835 Ÿ1907) from Otterberg,
Der Kontakt nach Bayern riss 1926 ab. Erst 1998 führte ein Familienforscher die amerikanischen und bayerischen
Zweige der Familie wieder zusammen.
n Benno and Joseph Neumayr had emigrated from Leitenberg near Rosenheim to America in 1881 and 1900 respectively.
Correspondence between Bavaria and America broke off after the death of Benno Neumayr in 1926. It
was only in 1998 that a family researcher brought the American and Bavarian branches of the family back together.
