Nobody will be surprised if we say that summertime is
Palma’s grand season. This Mediterranean city gets all
dressed up, and plans its juiciest proposals so that we
can all enjoy the good weather but happily defy it when
it gets just too hot. To this end, the ‘Nits de la Fresca’ is
a plunge into the best films, the Mallorcan plays we
grew up with and highly exquisite, completely genuine
Mediterranean music. But there is much more: a succession
of great names at Bellver castle and the Bullring,
where Amaral, Jamiroquay, Manolo García and
the African star Youssou n’Dour will be performing; a
suggestive theatrical programme that includes two great
classic authors: Cervantes and Shakespeare; European
art, with Schiele and the tauromachy of Goya and
Picasso. And much, much more...
But besides all this, in August Palma will become the
European regatta capital, with the 24th Copa del Rey. A
classic competition where sportsmanship, glamour and
emotion prevail. The best sailors in the world will be
competing in the best bay in the world, which is
presently hoping anxiously to become the sailing venue
for the 2012 Olympics. However, this city’s biggest
asset will always be its inhabitants, who open their arms
wide to our visitors again this summer.
And to get the last drop out of the summer, to make the
most of each and every one of the things on offer here

Niemand wird davon überrascht sein, wenn wir sagen,
das der Sommer die grosse Jahreszeit Palmas ist. Die

35TH ANNIVERSARY
OF THE ‘SUMMER
SERENADES’
This is a year of celebration for
the Summer Serenades which are
being hosted by Bellver Castle in
their 35th year. In August, they
will be organising five recitals of
classical music, on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. The first, on August
2, will be given by the European
Union Chamber Orchestra. Then,
we can hear the soprano María
Guleghina with the pianist Vicenzo
Scalera; Gabriel Estarellas;
Jean-Yves Thibaudet; and finally
Leonidas Kavakos and Denes
Varjon.

Es ist dies ein Festjahr für die
Serenates d`estiu, die zu ihrem
35jährigen Jubiläum im Schloss

SUMMER AT THE CASTLE

Bellver Castle is open for music once again this year and nearly twenty concerts there will
feature many of the leading names in their fields • Klassische und altertümliche Musik,

Yet again this summer, Bellver
Castle, an attractive setting for live
performances, will be staging a
series of recitals that have variety
and the desire to be accessible to
all tastes and pockets in common:
the programme ranges from Julia
León singing poems from the
Golden Age of Spanish literature
set to music on July 2 (15 €), to the
lady of song, Teresa Berganza, who
rounds off the series with a recital
of lieder for voice and piano on
September 3 (30 €).
In between, there are a great many
different things on offer. In the
classical music category, the best
represented, the concerts of the
Symphony Orchestra of the
Balearics are prominent - every
Thursday in July. Four concerts of
the high standard to which we have
become accustomed. Nor is pop
rock ignored, with two musicians,
now classics in their styles: Elliot

Carmen Linares.
Murphy, with over 30 albums
behind him playing an acoustic set
on July 9, sharing the bill with Sid
Griffin; and Gerard Quintana who
will present his album ‘Les Claus
de Sal’ on July 16.
The Bellver programme is as wide
ranging as it is diverse and also
Teresa Berganza.

Geschmack und Einkommen, zu
erreichen. Das Angebot spannt
einen Bogen von den vertonten
Gedichten Julia Leóns, vorgetragen
vom Siglo de Oro am 2. Juli (15
Juli), bis zur Grand Dame der Oper
Teresa Berganza, welche die Konzertreihe
mit einem Liederzyklus für
Klavier und Stimme am 3. September
(30 Euros ) schliessen wird.
Dazwischen liegt eine Vielzahl von
Angeboten. In der Kategorie der
klassischen Musik, die wohl am
stärksten repräsentierte, sind
besonders die Konzerte des Symphonieorchesters
der Balearen,

In their thirty-fifth year the Summer
Serenades are to be staged at
Bellver Castle; five recitals of
classical music on Tuesdays and

Mozart, Weber, Bruckner and
Grieg. On August 11, the soprano

takes the stage and on August 23

and pianist Denes Varjon, on
August 30.

ELLIOT
MURPHY,
THE MAGIC OF
GOOD ROCK
The magic of good rock is back at
the hands of Elliot Murphy, one of
the greats although he has never
been very fortunate selling his
records. The singer and guitarist
from New York, who surprised us in
Pollença and enthralled us in the
fiestas of San Sebastian, will present,
together with his inseparable
Oliver Duran, an acoustic set in
Bellver Castle, which will serve to
show how those songs that we normally
hear in their electrified versions
are evolving. Acclaimed at his
debut as the new Dylan, towards the
end of the 80’s, Murphy settled in
Paris, where he now lives. He has
made over 30 albums and the critics
consider him to be one of the most
cultured and intelligent of rock
composers. The evening of July 9
will also present Sid Griffin, member
of emblematic bands such as
The Coal Porters, The Long Riders
and Western Electric.

Die Magie des guten Rock, kehrt in
Gestalt von Elliot Murphy zurück,
einem der ganz Grossen, trotz seiner
vergleichsweise bescheidenen Verkaufszahlen.
Der Sänger und Gitarrist
aus New York, der uns in Pollença
überraschte und während der
Feste zu San Sebastian fesselte,
immer begleitet von seinem unzertrennlichen
Oliver Duran, wird diesmal
bei seinem neuerlichen Besuch
im Schloss Bellver ein akustisches
Konzert geben, während dessen man
wird verfolgen können, wie sich diese,
uns in elektrischen Versionen
bekannten Lieder, entwickeln. Bei
seinem Debut als der ‘Neue Dylan’
gefeiert, liess er sich zum Ende der
80er Jahre in Paris nieder, wo er auch
gegenwärtig lebt. Seine Veröffentlichungen
umfassen mehr als 30 Titel
und er wird von der Kritik als einer
gebildetsten und intelligentesten
Komponisten des Rock eingeschätzt.
In dieser Nacht tritt auch Sid Griffin
auf, der Mitglied solch emblematischer
Gruppen wie The Coal Porters,

gewesen ist.

CULTURAL EVENTS / ZYKLUS ‘ESTIU A LA FRESCA’
YET AGAIN THIS YEAR, THE
SERIES OF CULTURAL EVENTS
‘ESTIU A LA FRESCA’, which
takes place in the Parc de la Mar and
consists of music, theatre and cinema
with the projection of major
films, will be one of City Hall’s main
cultural contributions to the summer.
A wide range of films, suitable
for all ages, is going to be shown,
including: Shark Tale (version in
Catalan, July 17), Hotel Rwanda
(July 23), Troy (July 25), Alexander
(August 1), Closer (August 13), Harry
Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
(version in Catalan, August 14),
The Aviator (August 21), and The Sea
Inside (August 23).
On the same stage, the festival
Cançons de la Mediterrània, as it
does every year, will open up the
world for us and download a profusion
of music from different places,
age-old sounds with a sea-salt
flavour, music that has been silenced
by the all-powerful record companies
but which evokes a passionate echo
within us because it is part of us.
Music with roots for uprooted times.
The Mallorcan group ‘Cap on Anam’
opens the round of concerts on July
15; on July 22, we will be able to
enjoy the music of the Guinean, Nino
Galissa; on July 29, the Iraqi Fawzy
Al-Aiedy pays us a visit; Clara Murtas
and Tomeu Penya will be on stage on
August 5; and finally the night of
August 12 is reserved for DJ Lord Sassafras,
a genius of ethnic music. Let
us also add the fun of a homage to
Village People (July 28), another to
Gypsy Kings (August 17) and a third
to Queen (August 24) also in the Parc
de la Mar.

wären eine amüsante
Hommage an die Village People (28.

THE CONCERT OF THE SUMMER
Youssou n’Dour, Jamiroquai, Amaral and Manolo García are contesting the unofficial title of the Concert of the Summer. The
four will be performing in the same setting: the Bullring • Youssou n’Dour, Jamiroquai, Amaral und Manolo García liegen im

The bullring is becoming the mecca of pop-rock, so many
mass shows is it presenting. The summer kicks off with a
month, July, packed with concerts four of which feature top
flight musicians: Amaral (July 2), Youssou N’Dour (July
25), Jamiroquai (July 27) and Manolo García (July 30).
Eva Amaral and Juan Aguirre are a duo whose limits would
seem to be the sky as their latest album ‘Pájaros en la Cabeza’
proves. They will be presenting their work in Palma,
with a full band and a team of forty in all, plus another
seventy people in logistical support - statistics to prove that
this is a major group. So much so that Eva was chosen to
open for Dylan in Spain. For this summer’s tour, Amaral
will be using state of the art technology in lighting and
video: mobile spotlights of the latest generation, plasma and
back projection screens, 80,000 watts of sound…..
One of the best known names in the African music scene,
the greatest singer from the Third World since Bob Marley
will also be making his mark in the bullring. This is Youssou
N’Dour, who comes here thanks to the organisers of the
Joves per la Llengua Festival. The man from Dakar, who
sold out the concert hall Assaig on his last visit to the city,
will be playing new songs, which draw on Senegalese tradition
and Egyptian and Arab rhythms. A thrilling combination,
like all the work of a musician who knows a lot about
dialogue and respect. A concert that will make it clear why
Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel and Branford Marsalis asked him
to play with them and will also let us discover the sound of
instruments unknown to the vast majority such as the
magruna, doholla, sagat and rabada.
Manolo García, a regular on Mallorcan stages in the summer
months, will arrive at the Coliseo Balear as part of an extensive
tour that has been taking him all over Spain since April.
This tour is the sequel to another that started in October 2004,
during which he gave 48 concerts and sold out months in
advance. In the bullring he will be performing what is his
third solo album, ‘Para que no se duerman mis sentidos’.

Eva Amaral und Juan Aguirre sind ein Duo dessen
Erfolgsstory keine Grenzen zu kennen scheint. Ihre letzte
Arbeit ‘Pájaros en la cabeza’ scheint dies zu beweisen.
Diese Arbeit werden sie auch in Palma mit Hilfe ihrer
gesamten Gruppe und einem Team von mehr als 40 Mitarbeitern
sowie weiteren 70 Logistik-Helfern vorstellen.

verwendet Amaral die modernsten Beleuchtungsund
Video-Techniken: die neuesten beweglichen Strahler,
Plasma- und Retroprojektions-Bildschirme und 80.000
Watt Beschallung.
Einer der bedeutenden Namen der afrikanischen Musik,
der wichtigste Sänger der dritten Welt seit Bob Marley,

Ein Konzert das erklären wird, warum Paul Simon,

Tournee, die als Fortsetzung der vorhergehenden, im Oktober
2004 begonnenen, zu verstehen ist, während der er 48
bereits Monate im voraus ausverkaufte Konzerte gab. In
der Stierkampfarena wird er seine letzte Solo-Arbeit ‘Para
que no se duerman mis sentidos’ vorstellen.
Mit dem Vorsatz die Stierkampfarena in eine grosse Tanzfläche
zu verwandeln, wie er es bereits 2003 mit mehr als
9000 Konzertbesuchern tat, wird Jamiroquai den Funk
Akzent mit Soul und Bossa Nova Anleihen sesteen. Ein
Cocktail der ankommt. Ein Grammy und 20 Millionen
verkaufte Tonträger in der ganzen Welt sowie fantastische
Konzerte sind Beweis für den Erfolg dieser von Jayson
Kay geführten Gruppe. Auf Mallorca werden sie ihre neue
Platte ‘Dynamite’ vorstellen, deren Veröffentlichung für

George Benson (Pittsburgh, 1943) has a long career behind
him, and many think he is one of the best guitarists in the
world. He is a jazzman who, nevertheless, has dabbled with
great success in the world of pop, winning no less than
three Grammies. The quality of albums like ‘Breezin’ and
‘The Masquerade’ was a calling card for the likes of Quincy
Jones, Roberta Flack and James Taylor with whom he
has worked. His presence on the island on July 29 at the
Gran Casino de Mallorca is a magnificent piece of news
that his fans will receive with enthusiasm.
But the other artists invited are also stunning. Over the
months to come we will be able to see Paquito de Ribera
(October 31 at the Auditórium), Roy Haynes (November
12, Gran Casino), Brad Mehldau (November 18, Conservatory)
and the Blind Boys of Alabama (November 25,
Auditórium), all of them exceptional jazz musicians.
This will be in autumn and after Benson has fired the starting
gun, Kool and the Gang will also be performing at the
Gran Casino de Mallorca but on September 10. The band
that is to visit us has been together for four decades ever
since they met in their birthplace Ohio and formed their
first group in 1964. To give us an idea of their success
worldwide over the years, we should point out that altogether
they have sold 100 million records, and have been
awarded 27 gold and platinum records. Kool and the Gang
can switch effortlessly from one style to another; jazz is
only one of their facets. They have become so big thanks to
their funk, their command of soul, their disco hits and their
experiments with rhythm and blues.

There is a top flight programme
scheduled for the 10th Mallorca Ballet
Season, which starts on July 1. It

This flamenco production, in

time: ‘Swan Lake’, ‘Giselle’ and

productions will be performed by
the Hermitage Theatre Ballet of St.
Petersburg, one of the best known
companies in Russia and one of
those that makes the most international
tours. Their first performance
in Palma, ‘Swan Lake’, will
take place on August 8. This will
be followed by ‘Giselle’ on August
9 and The Sleeping Beauty’ on
August 10.
All the directors and masters of
the Company have studied at the
Vaganova Academy, which has
produced some of the most
important figures in the world of
ballet of all time and which recently
celebrated its 250th anniversary.

Summer weather makes open air theatre inviting. This is why Bellver Castle is the setting for some texts by Cervantes and La
Misericòrdia for a work by Shakespeare, while Ses Voltes hosts a series of plays by Balearic theatre groups • Die Sommerzeit lädt
in die Freiluftbühnen ein. Daher werden im Schloss von Bellver Texte von Cervantes und in der Misericordia ein Stück von
Shakespeare aufgeführt, während in Ses Voltes ein Komödien-Zyklus mallorkinischer Gruppen vorgestellt werden.

The fourth centenary of the publication of El Ingenioso
Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha, the quintessential classic
of the Spanish language, which is being celebrated in
2005, has made its author, Miguel de Cervantes, more topi-

cal than ever. To mark this anniversary, Palma City Council
has programmed two performances of Exemplaridades Cervantinas
in the exceptional setting of Bellver Castle. This is
an adaptation for the stage of five short narratives of those
included by the writer from Alcala de Henares in his Novelas
Ejemplares, witty insights into his time and age and of
vices and roguishness throughout the ages.
A well known company from Castille, Teatro La Quimera,
is to stage the production, which is adapted and directed by
Andres Cienfuegos, and performed by Cienfuegos himself

together with Juan Manuel Pérez, Selma Sorhegui and
Roberto Galán. Each of them plays different parts according
to the story of each of the five tales: El coloquio de los perros,
Las dos doncellas, El matrimonio engañoso, La señora
Cornelia and El celoso extremeño. This production represents
a new interpretation of Cervantic texts, although the
cast hopes they keep intact their quality as a ‘mirror where
we can see ourselves in depth’, i.e. as a critic of human
behaviour.
In over two decades of success La Quimera has premiered a
score of productions by authors as diverse as Lorca, Fo,
Kafka, and Valle-Inclán. In 2003, they presented their version
of Shakespeare’s Othello in the same setting, Bellver
Castle, where it has become the custom to put on productions
of work by classic authors every summer.

Das vierhundertste Jubiläum der Veröffentlichung des Don
Quijote, dem Klassiker par excellence der spanischen Literatur,
das im Jahr 2005 gefeiert wird, hat dafür gesorgt, das
sein Autor Miguel de Cervantes, aktueller als je zuvor ist.
Zu diesem Festjahr hat die Stadt Palma in einem so aussergewöhnlichen
Rahmen wie dem Schloss von Bellver zwei
Aufführungen der Exemplaridades Cervantinas organisiert,
es handelt sich hierbei um die Theateradaptationen von fünf
kurzen Erzählungen, den Novelas ejemplares Cervantes entnommen,
tiefgründigen Betrachtungen seiner Zeit und der
Laster und Schelmereien die alle Epochen übergreifen.

SIND ‘EIN SPIEGEL IN DEM WIR UNS
ALLE BETRACHTEN’
Eine bekannte spanische Gruppe, Teatro La Quimera, ist für
die Aufführung dieses Stücks verantwortlich, nach der
Adaptation und unter der Regie von Andrés Cienfuegos und
interpretiert von Cienfuegos selbst, mit Juan Manuel Perez,
Selma Sorhegui und Roberto Galán. Jeder von ihnen übernimmt
verschiedene Rollen je nach Inhalt der fünf
Geschichten: El coloquio de los perros, Las dos doncellas,
El matrimonio engañoso, La señora Cornelia und El celoso
extremeño. Diese Inszenierung stellt eine neue Interpretation
der Cervantes Texte dar, wobei jedoch das Ensemble
versichert, das dabei seine besondere Qualität als ‘Spiegel,
in dem wir uns alle betrachten’ , also die Kritik am menschlichen
Verhalten, bewahrt wird.
La Quimera, mit ihrer mehr als zwanzigjährigen Geschichte,
hat in diesem Zeitraum mehr als 20 Inszenierungen von
solch unterschiedlichen Autoren wie Lorca, Fo, Kafka oder
Valle-Inclan aufgeführt. Ihre Version von Shakespeares
Othello präsentierten sie 2003 auf der eben dieser Bühne im
Schloss Bellver, auf der die sommerlichen Aufführungen

director Konrad Zschiedrich and the
Mallorcan producer Rafel Oliver (with
the support of the Fundació Teatre
Principal) work together in this new
version in Catalan of one of Shakespeare’s
most amusing comedies,
which was made into a film by Kenneth
Branagh. Muddles, mix-ups, and
tangled romances are the main argument
of this play, the main character
of which is a prince of the House of
Aragon. The actors, all excellent, are
from the Balearics and Catalonia, and
stage management and lighting is by
Josep Borràs.

SCHIELE, ‘BODY AND SOUL’
A SUMMER OF ART The summer is generous with exhibitions; it is just that in Mallorca everything adapts
to the season and its customs. This means that much activity moves out of Palma to other parts of the island. This
decentralisation is obvious in the field of art. Despite this, the city does not take a break and this summer we will
be able to enjoy a wide range of art, from the photographs of the Telefonica collection to the classic engravings
of Goya and Picasso and Egon Schiele’s ‘Body and Soul’ SOMMERKUNST Das Ausstellungsangebot des
Sommers ist grosszügig. Das Zentrum der Aktivitäten verlagert sich von Palma auf den Rest der Insel. Diese
Deszentralisierung wird im künstlerischen Bereich deutlich. Die Hauptstadt jedoch erhält weiterhin ihr Angebot
aufrecht und in diesem Sommer wird man von den Fotografien der Telefonica-Sammlung bis zu den klassischen

THE AUSTRIAN PAINTER WAS
A MASTER AT DRAWING
THE LINES OF
THE HUMAN BODY
‘Body and soul’ is the title of the
exhibition of fifty works by Egon
Schiele (Tulln, 1890) that the passerby
will be able to enjoy at the Museu
d’Art Espanyol Contemporani (Fundación
Juan March). It is called this
because the Austria painter was a
master at drawing the lines of the
human body. In the show due to be
seen on the island, his work on paper
reveals him, the maestro of Viennese
expressionism, to be intense when it
comes to portraying the folds, not just
of the skin that covers us, but of the
inner recesses of the soul. His distorted
lines, the forceful expression indicating
the movement lodged in all our
bodies help Schiele to probe what is
not on view at first sight: the spirit,
the human condition. The impact
made by Maxer and Ludwig Karl
Strauch when he was young, which
would later become more intense in
the maternal lands of Krumau, and
his relationship with Klimt were to
mark the beginning of his painting.
Portraits and landscapes – those
made of the bridge at Triste were very
frequent at the time – are evidence of
his drawing closer to the Jugendstil
movement.
In 1908 he was invited to take part in
an exhibition at Klosterneuberg. A
year later he took part in a collective
exhibition at the Vienna Internationale
Kunstchau alongside Munch,
Toorop, Matisse, Bonnard, Vuillard,
van Gogh and Gauguin. The collector
and patron Roessler became a
great fan of Schiele’s work and
ordered picture after picture from

Seventy-six engravings by the two
artists are on view at the Museu
d’Art Espanyol Contemporani,
forty by the painter from Aragon
and the rest by Picasso.
For Goya, the Bullfight was a
parenthesis in his most dramatic
work, as captured in ‘The Disasters
of War’ and the mystery of the
‘Disparates’. According to
Lafuente Ferrari, in the bullfight
engravings we can see a disenchanted
Goya who found in bullfighting
an escape valve, a reunion
with his passion for life. ‘Tauromachy’
is not as grandiose as some
other series, but it shows his mastery
equally well in capturing the
movement of all the phases of a
bullfight. The shades of light are
intense, the shadows are tragic.
Goya captures the struggle
between man and beast with his
proverbial mastery, in one of the
most classical of all themes.

des Stierkampfs eine willkommene
Unterbrechung seiner dramatischen
Arbeiten wie den ‘Desastres
de la Guerra’ und dem
Mysterium der ‘Disparates’. Nach
Lafuente Ferrari sieht man in den
Stierkampf-Radierungen einen
desillusionierten Goya, der in den
Stierkampf-Feiern eine Ablenkung
und eine Wiederbegegnung mit der
Lebenslust fand. Die Stierkampfbilder
sind Beleg für seine Meisterschaft
in der Darstellung aller
Bewegungen des Festes. Licht und
Schatten sind intensive, die
Düsterkeit ist tragisch. Goya stellt
mit der sprichwörtlichen Meisterschaft
den Kampf des Menschen
mit der Bestie dar, eines der klassischen
Themen par excellence.

him. At that time, the painter was
wrapped up in the poetry of Rimbaud
and the German Romantics,
and this can be seen in the way he
intensifies nature in this work. He
had a religious phase as in the painting
‘The Cardinal and the Monk’,
but his style was to free itself of contemporary
constraints and become
much freer. War appeared and its
sequels in his painting. After the
war, Schiele created the Kunsthalle
group of artists and intellectuals to
revive the country’s cultural life. Its
name soon became well known in
Vienna. Schiele died in 1918.

Schiele, ‘In Körper und Seele’ ist der
Titel der Ausstellung von 50 Arbeiten
Egon Schieles (Tulln, 1890) die
der Besucher im Museu d`Art Espanyol
Contemporani (Fundación Juan
March) wird sehen können. Der Titel
ist gut gewählt, war doch dieser
österreichische Maler ein Maler ein
Meister in der Darstellung des
menschlichen Körpers. Es werden
Arbeiten auf Papier dieses Meisters
des wienerischen Expressionismus
auf der Insel ausgestellt, die seine
Intensität bei der Darstellungen der
Falten, nicht nur der Haut, sondern
auch der Seele belegen. Seine verzerrten
Linien, die treffende Darstellung
der Bewegung eines jeden Körpers,
dienen Schiele zur Vertiefung
dessen, was man auf den ersten Blick
nicht erkennt: den Geist, die menschliche
Verfassung. Geprägt ist sein
Frühwerk vom Einfluss Maxers und
Ludwig Karl Strauchs in seinen
Jugendjahren, intensiviert durch die
mütterlichen Landschaften von Krumau
und die Beziehung zu Klimt.

PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE TELEFÓNICA FOUNDATION
Photography now has a major place in contemporary art. Nobody can fail to
notice the way it has become interwoven with the forms of 20th and 21st century
art. This is why collectors are showing an interest in it. The Telefonica
Foundation is taking an increasingly bigger stake, even though its main interest
continues to be painting. Throughout the summer, the Casal Solleric is
showing a good part of this collection, which is growing all the time. This is
not a collection designed to document the evolution of photography; it is more
interested in it as a medium of artistic expression. The list of photographers
whose work contributes to the show is descriptive of the spirit behind this collection,
which comes to Palma this summer: Bern & Hilla Becher; Thomas
Ruff; Thomas Struth, Andreas Gursky, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Wall, Sam Taylor-
Wood, right up to the most contemporary artists.

Die Fotografie ist bereits eine feste Referenz in der zeitgenössischen Kunst.
Der Einfluss ihres Vokabulars auf die Kunst des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts ist
nicht mehr zu leugnen. Daher ist auch eine Kultur für Photo-Sammler entstanden.
Die Stiftung Telefònica räumt der Fotografie immer Platz ein, und
dies obwohl die Malerei in ihrer Sammlung den absoluten Schwerpunkt hat.
Der Casal Solleric stellt einen grossen Teil dieser, ständig wachsenden,
Sammlung den ganzen Sommer lang aus. Der Bestand wurde nicht mit dokumentarischem
Eifer zusammengetragen, sondern legt das Haupaugenmerk auf
vielzählige Darstellung der Brücke
in Triste – weisen auf seine Annäherung
an den Jugendstil hin.
1908 wird er zu einer Ausstellung in
Klosterneuberg eingeladen. Ein Jahr
später nimmt er zusammen mit
Munch, Toorop, Matisse, Bonnard,
Vuillard, Van Gogh und Gauguin an
einer Kollektivausstellung im Rahmen
der Internationalen Kunstschau
in Wien teil. Er erweckt dabei das
Interesse des Sammlers und Mäzens
Roessler, welcher daraufhin unablässig
Arbeiten bei ihm in Auftrag gibt.
Die Inspiration bezieht der Maler aus
der Poesie Rimbauds und dem deutschen

Name ist in Wien bereits eine Referenz.

THE TRADITIONAL AND THE
MODERN IN THE SAME STREET

It is one of the busiest streets in the centre of Palma, pedestrianised
and slightly curving in its course, which ends in
Plaça Sant Antoni. We are talking about Via Sindicat, a historical
shopping street where it is possible to find anything,
including any type of spice or herb, the aromas of which perfume
this ancient gateway to the city.
For centuries it was the most important shopping area in
Palma, which is why Plaça Quartera, one of the centres of
the trade guilds since the times of the Middle Ages, is to be
found just off this street. The city’s official store of wheat
used to be there in a porticoed building dating from the 15th
century, of which only one of the sidewalls remains. In turn,
craftsmen set up nearby and gave the streets a guild-like air.
In Carrer de sa Cordería there are still several businesses
selling goods made of esparto grass.
The street we are interested in used to be called Carrer de sa
Capelleria, due to the large number of hat shops there used
to be there. Only two of them are still open today, but these
preserve the air of by-gone times intact.
Its present-day name owes much to the headquarters of the
Sindicat in one of its buildings, where today there is a shop
specialising in camping and climbing equipment. Until 45
years ago, trams used the street, as did other vehicles and, at
a squeeze, pedestrians too. However the action of the closed
ranks of the shopkeepers succeeded in giving it a unique

pedestrianised nature; in fact, it was one of the first streets in
Spain where these came together as an association Via Sindicat
starts in Carrer de sa Bosseria, on the same side as Plaça
Major. It is heterogeneous and entertaining, a place where
the traditional and the modern come together. There are a
great many shops selling jewellery, watches and costume
jewellery with both classic and modern designs. There are
also a large number of shoe shops of all sorts, selling everything
from exclusive leather models for men and women to
fantasy footwear, trainers and boots to sport just like a real
cowboy. In the shops there is a wide range of women’s fashion,
urban fashion for young people, children’s clothing, and
even traditional Mallorquin costume. A wide variety of
shops selling fashion complements, and gift shops, perfume
shops, chemist’s shops, a tobacconist’s, an art gallery,
banks…
On your way down the street, you can try a portion of pizza,
a kebab, or if you prefer, freshly deep fried batter cakes
sprinkled with sugar. Yet another alternative is a tasty ensaïmada
from the cake shop at the end of the street that has
been in business since 1870.
VIA SINDICAT
TRADITION UND MODERNITÄT
IN DER SELBEN STRASSE
Es handelt sich um eine der meistfrequentierten Strassen
Palmas, nur für Fussgänger und leicht schlängelnd auf die
Plaça Sant Antoni führend. Wir sprechen von der Via Sindicat,
eine Einkaufsstrasse mit Tradition, auf der man so ziemlich
alles finden kann. Zum Beispiel auch Gewürze, die mit
ihren Aromen dieses alte Tor zur Stadt parfümieren. Für
mehrere Jahrhundert war dies das bedeutendste Handelszentrum
der Stadt, nicht umsonst liegt direkt hinter ihr die Plaça
Quartera, seit dem Mittelalter eines der Zentren der Handelsorganisation.
Hier befand sich das offizielle Weizenlager
der Stadt, in einem Gebäude mit Portikum aus dem 15. Jahrhundert,
von dem heute nur noch eine Seitenwand existiert.
Die Handwerker liessen sich in direkter Nähe nieder und
gaben den Strassen einen Zunfts-Charakter. In der Calle
Cordeleria befinden sich noch eine Reihe von Geschäften,
die geflochtene Produkte anbieten. Unser Interesse gilt
besonders dem Carrer de sa Capelleria, so benannt auf
Grund der einstmals grossen Anzahl von Hutgeschäften, von
denen heute nur noch zwei existieren, die aber trotzdem
ihren Charakter einer anderen Epoche bewahren.
Ihren gegenwärtigen Namen verdankt sie dem Sitz des Sindicats
in einem ihrer Gebäude, in dem sich heute ein Spezialgeschäft
für Camping- und Bergsteigerausrüstungen befindet.
Bis vor 45 Jahren bewegten sich hier noch die Strassenbahn,
der Verkehr und mit Mühe auch die Fussgänger. Dank
der Initiative eines der Händler jedoch gelang es, die Strasse
nur noch für den Verkehr zu Fuss zuzulassen. Auch war sie
eine der ersten spanischen Strassen, in der sich die Händler
zu einer Gemeinschaft zusammenschlossen.
Die Via Sindicat beginnt in der Calle Bosseria, direkt
neben der Plaça Major. Sie ist heterogen und amüsant, eine
Mischung aus Tradition und Modernität. Es überwiegen
Schmuck-, Uhren- und Modeschmuckgeschäfte, mit klassischem
und modernem Design. Auch Schuhgeschäfte jeglicher
Art bieten exklusive Modelle in Leder für Herren
und Damen, phantasievolle Kreationen, Sportschuhe oder
auch authentische Cowboystiefel an. Das Bekleidungsangebot
umfasst, Damenmode, urbane Mode für jugendliche,
Kindermode und sogar typische mallorkinische Trachtenkleidung.
Accesoires, Geschenkartikel, Parfümerien, Apotheken,
Tabakläden, Kunstgalerien, Banken ….alles gibt es
hier. Auf dem Weg kann eine Pizza kosten, einen Kebab
oder frisch gebackene, mit Zucker gepuderte Krapfen. Eine
weitere Option ist eine leckere Ensaimada, in der Bäckerei
am Ende der Strasse, die bereits seit 1870 an dieser Stelle
existiert.

organisations, many shops give their customers tickets to use on the municipal bus
company’s inner city route, which connects the old centre of the city to the Avenidas
and Paseo Mallorca, while others give out vouchers for the customer to park free for
1 or 2 hours in the car parks in Santa Pagesa, Comte de Sallent, Via Roma, Comte

FIRA DEL DISC / RECORD FAIR The Palma Record Fair is about to hold its sixth
annual event, which will take place on September 11 - 12 in Palma’s Trade Fair
Centre. Considered to be one of the best in Europe, there will be over one hundred and
twenty stands, as well as concerts and a number of auctions of objects with musical

SANTA CATALINA MARKET Although Santa Catalina has lost its
character of a seafaring area, it has not undergone great changes as far as its
appearance is concerned, apart from a few tall buildings. In the centre of the
neighbourhood, in Plaça de la Navegació, there is a market, a real one judging
by the wide variety of fresh fish and shell fish on sale. To this one must add fruit
and vegetables from local market gardens, cold meats and sausages, salted and
pickled foodstuffs, prime meats, pulses and legumes, nuts and dried fruit, bread
and cakes, artisanal fare, and select products, as well as prepared dishes, plants
and flowers throughout the year. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, market

From Plaça Cort, we walk towards the nearby square of Santa
Eulàlia. On the corner of Carrer de la Cadena, at the top of the
building called Can Vila, we can see a sundial with a disturbing
message: a skeleton supports the gnomon that marks the passing
of time opposite a beautiful maiden; beneath an inscription
reads: ‘Each hour wounds, the last one kills.’ Opposite the
church of Santa Eulàlia, we take pleasure in one of the many
legends about the father of our culture, Ramón Llull; he himself
would say that he was a troubadour of human love until he
was thirty and that he then dedicated himself to a life of religion,
thereby earning himself the description of a minstrel of
God. Tradition would have it that, when Llull was in the first
stage of his life, he chased after a woman he wanted to make
his own on horseback; she took refuge in a church but the
young man rode his horse in to the church without thinking
twice about it; when the woman was all but lost, she showed
him her gangrenous breast; Ramón fell off his horse and left,
desolate, reflecting on how finite material beauty was.
We continue towards Carrer d’En Morey. Where this street
leads out of Plaça Santa Eulàlia, high up on the right we can
make out the cross of Nunó Sanç, an old symbol of jurisdiction
that recalls the sharing out of the city in the year 1230, after
the conquest; the area to the left was part of the lordly domain
of the king, while the part to the right belonged to the Count

of Rosselló, Nunó Sanç. Number 8 is a house called Can
Ordines d’Almadrà, in the hallway of which there is a small
Gothic doorway with a strange message in Latin, which translates
thus: ‘Marry and stay silent, the silence will bring you happiness’;
this refers to the marriage of a gentleman named Vivot
with a damsel called Santjoan.
On reaching the junction of Carrer d’En Morey with the Carreres
de la Puresa and de la Portella, we turn off along Portella,
where we go past Can Espanya-Serra at number 8, which
has a highly enigmatic façade with 28 faces on it staring at the
passer-by. A little further down the street, we get to Can
Formiguera, the house of one of the most legendary characters
of Mallorcan history, the Count of Mal, Ramon Burgués-
Safortesa (1626 – 1694) 2nd Count of Santa Maria de
Formiguera; he was given the name because he wished to be
a very harsh feudal lord, which is a matter of fact; however, our
count also assumed a good part of the legends surrounding the
Catalan Count Arnau, so we should not be surprised that legend
tells of the Count’s tower being built with the help of foolish
demons so that from it he could gaze upon a nun of the
convent of Santa Clara with whom he had fallen in love….
We walk along Carrer de Serra, where the Arab Baths are located,
and turn right into Carrer de San Alonso. Then in the heart
of what used to be the Jewish Quarter, we reach Carrer de la

Torre de l’Amor. This charming name evokes the legend of
Mosén Faquim, a very wealthy Jew, who had fallen for the wife
of Magaluf Natjar. Mosén decided to build a high tower on his
house so that he could see into the private rooms of his loved
one and even gaze upon her person. The protests of Magaluf
reached the king. The monarch decided to act and ordered his
officials to lower the height of Mosén’s tower by twelve spans;
the tower was already known by the name of the Tower of
Love, and had been for years.
We are off in search of the monastery of San Francisco. If we are
not worried by being kept awake by scary stories, we can
immerse ourselves in the complicated story of la calumnia vengada
(defamation avenged) that tells the terrible tale of a young
noble couple in the17th century; the young man went back on
his word to the maiden in front of some friends, and afterwards,
so complicated did the matter become that he had to set off to
the war in Flanders and she fell ill. Seven years later, the young
gentleman returned and heard the mourning bells tolling: it was
for his ex-fiancée; he confessed himself to a priest and the penitence
was to hold a vigil alone over the dead girl’s body….
Vengeance did not take long: coldly and soberly the lady chased
the gentleman all round the church until she managed to cut out
his tongue with an iris that she had in her hand.

Von der Plaza de Cort laufen wir zur nahegelegenen Plaza de
Santa Eulalia. An der Ecke zur Calle de la Cadena, am Gebäude
von Can Vila, sehen wir über uns die Sonnenuhr, mit ihrer
beunruhigenden Mitteilung, ein Skelett hält den Stab der die
Zeit anzeigt vor einem schönen, jungen Mädchen; darunter die
Inschrift: ‘Jede Stunde verletzt, die letzte tötet’. Der Kirche von
Santa Eulalia, lassen wir eine der zahlreichen Legenden des
Vaters unserer Kultur, Ramon Llull, wiederauferleben; er selbst
sagt, das er bis zu seinem 30. Lebensjahr der menschlichen Liebe
frönte, bis er sich dem religiösen Leben zuwandte. Laut
Überlieferung verfolgte Llull während seiner ersten Lebensphase
zu Pferd eine Frau, die er erobern wollte; sie suchte Zuflucht
in der Kirche und der junge Llull folgte ihr samt Pferd in das
Gotteshaus; als die Frau bereits verloren war, entblösste sie
dem gotteslästerlichen Don Juan ihre wundbrandige Brust;
Ramon fiel vom Pferd und flüchtete, untröstlich, um über die
Vergänglichkeit der materiellen Schönheit nachzudenken.
Wir gehen auf der Calle de Morei weiter. An der Stelle wo diese
Strasse auf die Plaza de Santa Eulalia trifft, rechts über uns,
sehen wir das Kreuz von Nunó Sanç, ein altes Symbol der Jurisdiktion,
das an die Aufteilung der Stadt im Jahr 1230, nach der
Wiedereroberung, erinnert; die linke Seite unterlag der königlichen
Herrschaft, während die rechte Seite dem Conde del
Rosselló, Nunó Sanç, zugesprochen wurde. An der Hausnummer
8 liegt Can Ordines d’Almadrà, in dessen Vestibül sich ein
kleines gotisches Portal mit einer eigentümlichen Inschrift
befindet, die wir wie folgt übersetzen: ‘Heirate und sei still, den
das Schweigen wird dir Freude einbringen’ bezüglich der Ehe
des Ritters Vivot mit der Jungfrau Santjoan.
Wo die Calle de Morei, die Calle de la Puresa und die Calle de
la Portella zusammentreffen, biegen wir in die Portella ein,
gehen an Can Espanya – Serra (Nr. 8), mit ihrer geheimnisvollen
Fassade mit 28 Gesichtern, vorbei. Ein bischen weiter liegt
Can Formiguera, Stadthaus einer der legendärsten Figuren
Mallorkas, des Comte Mal Ramon Burgues-Safortesa (1626-
1694), II Conde de Santa Maria de Formiguera; seinen Namen
verdankt er seinem Entschluss, ein Feudalherr besonderer Härte
sein zu wollen, ein historisches Theman, der Conde jedoch
werden ein Grossteil der Legenden des katalonischen Conde
Arnau zugesprochen; so darf es uns nicht verwundern, wenn
die Legende vom Turm des Conde spricht, erbaut mit Hilfe von
verrückten Teufeln, von dem aus er Nonne Santa Claras
betrachten wollte, in die er sich verliebt hatte. Wir biegen in die
Calle de Serra ein, in der die arabischen Bäder liegen und bie-

ehemaligen jüdischen Viertel, gelangen wir auf die Calle de la
Torre del Amor. Dieser freundliche Name bezieht sich auf die
Legende des Mosen Faquim, ein sehr reicher Jude, der sich in
die Frau von Magaluf Natjar verliebt hatte. Mosén entschloss
sich, in seinem Haus einen hohen Turm zu errichten, von dem
aus es ihm möglich sein würde, die Gemächer seiner Angebeteten
und sogar sie selber, zu sehen. Die Proteste Magalufs
erreichten den König. Der Monarch entschloss sich zu handeln
und ordnete seinen Beamten an Mosèns Turm, der bereits seit
Jahren als Turm der Liebe bekannt war, zwölf Handbreiten herunterzusetzen.
Wir gehen auf die Suche nach dem Konvent von Sant Francesc.
Sofern wir keine Angst vor Gruselgeschichten haben, können
wir uns mit der Geschichte der gerächten Verleumdung befassen,
welche die fürchterliche Geschichte eines jungen, adligen
Pärchens des 17. Jahrhunderts erzählt; der Junge entehrte die
Jungfrau in Worten in der Gegenwart von Freunden und musste,
nachdem dieser Vorfall weitere Kreise gezogen hatte nach
Flandern in den Krieg ziehen woraufhin das Mädchen erkrankte.
Sieben Jahre später hört der junge Ritter bei seiner Rückkeh
die Totenglocken läuten: die seiner ehemaligen Angebeteten;
er beichtet und die Strafe besteht darin, das er allein über die
Verstorbene wachen muss.... Die Rache liess nicht lange auf
sich warten: ruhig und kühl verfolgte die Dame den Ritter
durch die ganze Kirche bis sie ihm mit einer Lilie in ihrer Hand
die Zunge abgeschnitten hatte.

boats is very much the same and

2004, the IMS 670, in 2005 the
newcomers will be the Transpac 52,
a class that is not represented by any
boatyard, or commercial brand and
will be an important feature of this

On July 6, there is no first class
sporting event due to be held in Palma,
but it is the day when Palma
could receive the best news of its
sporting history. In Singapore, the

Playa de Palma is once more to be the setting for one of the competitions of the
European League of Beach Football and the best teams in the strong Group A,
Spain’s group, will be competing from August 5 - 7 for a place in the final
round in Monaco. World class players such as Eric Cantona, and Olmeta of
France, Fruzzetti of Italy, Madjer and Hernani of Portugal, and Julio Salinas
and Amarelle of Spain give a touch of distinction to a roll call of deluxe participants.
Goals, spectacle, music and an amazing atmosphere are some of the
elements that help to make beach football an enthralling sport that has always
been able to fill the stands in Palma.
It should be said that though the French are the current champions, Spain is certain
to recover the leading position they have held over the last few years.

The Son Pardo racecourse holds weekly race meetings of first class harness
racing, and following ion from the year’s major event, the Grand National
Prize, the Speed Grand Prix is approaching as the big summer meet at the
beginning of the month of August.
When the heat is at its worst, one can cool off and enjoy the spectacle of the
races at the same time, at the evening meetings at Son Pardo, with the
incentive of seeing in action the trotters of the best stables of the archipelago
in a sport that stays true to its principles and sees the level of its participants
increase year after year.
All this has the added attraction of accompanying the emotion with a bet or
two to spice up with a few drops of passion the interest not only of the fans
but also of the newcomers to the sport, who will enjoy an experience
steeped in tradition.

A Gothic temple (XIV – XVI c.), although the
main gate is from the late renaissance, finished in
1601, the main façade is Neo-Gothic dating back
to 1855. The south-facing gate is clearly Gothic,
from the XIV century, while the north-facing gate,
of l’Almoina, is from the XV century. La Seu
(cathedral) has 6,600m2 of surface area and,
according to the initial plans, 87 windows and 7
rose windows. Floor with three naves, with a
Gothic ribbed vault ceiling, suspended by slender
columns. On the central apse one finds the chapel
of The Trinity, where the sepulchres of the kings of

Majorca Jaume II and Jaume III are situated. The
renovation works by Antoni Gaudí, in 1904, eliminated
the central choir and recuperated the Gothic
cathedral. Currently, the chapel of Sant Pere is
being renovated under the supervision of Miquel
Barceló.
Gotisches Gotteshaus (14.-16. Jh.), auch wenn das
1601 fertiggestellte Hauptportal aus der Spätrenaissance
stammt und die 1855 errichtete Hauptfassade
der Neugotik zuzuordnen ist. Das Südportal
ist eindeutig gotisch, aus dem 14. Jh., während
das nach Norden gerichtete Portal von l’Almoina

befindet sich die Dreifaltigkeitskapelle mit den
Sarkophagen der mallorqu. Könige Jaume II und
Jaume III. Im Zuge des 1904 durch Antoni Gaudí
erfolgten Umbaus wurde die Kathedrale in ihrer
gotischen Form wiederhergestellt. Derzeit wird
unter der Leitung von Miquel Barceló die Kapelle
des Heiligen Petrus umgebaut.

The Gothic church from the XIII century
was substituted by a baroque
temple, started in 1618 and renovated
in 1859. The church is based on a
single nave, with four side chapels
and an apse with trapezoidal form.
The chapels have a Gothic ribbed
vault roof. The nave has a half-barrel
roof design and that of the apse features
a truncated cone section with
pictorial decoration. The altarpiece is
presided over by an image of the Virgin
Mary and another of Sant Felip
Neri. Worthy also of mention is the
singular chapel of the Virgin de los
Dolores, which features a different
construction to the rest of the temple.
It is based on an octagonal floor
plan, with side chapels and retrochoir.
It was constructed in the XVI
century.
Die gotische Kirche aus dem 13. Jh.
wurde durch ein barockes Gotteshaus
ersetz. Die Errichtung begann
1618, und 1859 erfolgte der Umbau.
Der Grundriss besteht aus einem
Schiff, mit vier Seitenkapellen im

trapezförmigen Chor. Die Kapellen
sind mit Kreuzgewölben versehen.
Die Decke des Kirchenschiffs ist halbtonnenförmig,
und die Decke des
Chores bildet einen kegelstumpfförmigen
Abschnitt, der mit Malereien
verziert ist. Das Altarbild wird
beherrscht von einer Darstellung der
Unbefleckten Empfängnis sowie
einem Bild des Hlg. Philipp von Neri.
Erwähnenswert ist zudem die Kapelle
der Hlg. Jungfrau der Schmerzen
mit ihrem achteckigen Grundriss,
kleinen Seitenkapellen und einem
Deambulatorium. Sie wurde im 16.
Jh. errichtet.

trefoil arches. The progression of
styles can be seen from the north
gallery, the first to be built, to the

werden, die hingegen nicht vor
dem 15. Jh. fertiggestellt wurde.

Neogothic reformation of the
façade, 1894-1924. This is one of
the first churches built after the
Catalan conquest. Other than the
Cathedral, it is the only gothic
church in Mallorca with three naves.
These are separated by two rows of
columns and have a groined vault
ceiling. The presbyter is polygonal
shaped with chapels and an unusual
apse aisle. The main altarpiece is
baroque. The side chapels feature
gothic paintings such as the Sleeping
Virgin, the Catlar altarpiece, as
well as the figures of the Sanskrit of
the Miracle and the Madonna, this
last one by Adrià Ferran. The
entrance on the main façade –
presided by a figure of Santa Eulàlia
– and the pointy, neogothic church
tower, were both designed by Joan
M. Sureda i Verí.

Santa Creu is one of the five
medieval parishes in the city. The
start of the works is documented as
1335. The church is based on a single
rectangular nave. This is flanked
by two side chapels that enclose the
presbytery and describe a semicircle.
An important piece is the Virgin
Mary with baby Jesus, from the XV
century, which is situated in a small
niche on the left wall of the chapel
of Saint Joseph. We shouldn’t forget
the chapel of Santo Cristo of
Santa Creu, the object of considerable
public devotion.
Die Kirche von Santa Creu ist eine der
5 mittelalt. Pfarrkirchen der Stadt.
Der Beginn der Bauarbeiten ist
urkundlich mit dem Jahr 1335
belegt. Die Kirche besteht aus einem

umgeben. Ein bedeutendes Kunstwerk
stellt die Muttergottes mit dem

Kreuz, die viele Jahre lang von der

Built in the 13th century, the Santa
Clara Church was first altered in the
15th century. The building as it
stands today is the result of alterations
in the 17th century. However,
as these were basically confined to
architectural decoration, it is still
possible to see the medieval origins
of the church from its structure.
Apart from the portal - Baroque
style - and the top part of the belltower,
the design of the main
facade is Majorcan Gothic. The
Baroque elements of Majorcan convents
predominate in its interior.
Mit dem Bau der Klosterkirche von
Santa Clara wurde im 13. Jahrhundert
begonnen, im 15. Jahrhundert
erfolgten dann Umbauten. Die heutige
Gestalt nahm das Gebäude
aber erst im 17. Jahrhundert an.
Betrachten wir die Baustruktur des
Gotteshauses, sind die mittelalterlichen
Züge noch ersichtlich, denn
die Umbauten im 17. Jahrhundert
konzentrierten sich vor allem auf die
architektonische Verzierung. So
stellt sich die Hauptfassade im Stil
der mallorquinischen Gotik dar, mit
Ausnahme des Portals - in barocker
Baukunst - und des oberen Teils des
Glockenturms. Im Kircheninneren
überwiegen die barocken Formen
der mallorquinischen Klöster.

The main entrance to the Almudaina Palace leads to the
King’s (or Honour) Courtyard. Here is the Chapel of Santa
Anna, which dates from the early 14th century and is
attributed to Ponç Descoll. The doorway to the Gothic
chapel is in the archaic Romanesque tradition, with a
semicircular arch resting on capitals carved with scenes
of fabulous beasts. In the Palace Oratory, the Chapel of
St. Praxedis with a figure dated 1458 is of interest, as is
the 14th century Tinell or Throne Room, with its great
pointed arches which support a pointed roof with two sloping
sides, identical to the one in the Palace of the Kings
of Mallorca in Perpignan.

ausgeführt wurde, wie das des Palastes der Könige von
Mallorca in Perpignan.

Sagrera. Work started in 1420 and
finished in 1452. Continuing the tradition
of the Catalan Gothic it comprises
one large area divided by
columns into three sections. The six
central columns have a circular base
and a spiralled shaft. La Llonja was
the model for a number of other
buildings with the same function,
notably that of Valencia. Despite its
generally austere lines, there are Flemish
and Burgundian influences in
some of the ornamental elements.
Der Bau wurde auf der Grundlage
eines Projektes von Guillem Sagrera
im Auftrag des Collegi de la Mercaderia
begonnen und ist eines der
bedeutendsten Wahrzeichen der
bürgerlichen Gotik. Ursprünglich
war das Gebäude als Handelszentrum
gedacht. Es wurde durch Guillem
Vilesclars und Miquel Sagrera
fertiggestellt. Die Erbauung begann
im Jahr 1420 und die Fertigstellung
dauerte bis 1952. Gemäss den Bauplänen
der katalanischen Gotik besteht
es aus einem einzigen Raum,
der durch Säulen im Inneren in drei
Schiffe unterteilt wurde. Die sechs

Hauptsäulen haben einen runden
Sockel und einen Säulenschaft in
Form einer Spirale. La Llonja diente
auch als Beispiel zur Erbauung anderer
Gebäude mit ähnlicher Funktion,
wie dem in Valencia. Obwohl es insgesamt
eine nüchterne Linienführung
aufweist, sind andere Einflüsse
(flämische und burgundische) an
einigen Ornamenten deutlich zu
erkennen.

The building houses the Sa Nostra
Cultural Centre, with exhibition and
concert halls where lectures, courses,
seminars, presentation of books etc.
are held. It has a courtyard typical of
the 18th century with segmental
arches and red marble Ionic columns.
The stairway, originally of two flights,
was lengthened in a 19th century
adaptation. The Modernist appearance
of the façade is the result of
reforms carried out by the architect
Jaume Alenyà in 1909.
In diesem Gebäude ist das Kulturzentrum
der Bank Sa Nostra untergebracht,
in dem Ausstellungen und
Vorträge unterschiedlichster Art
ebenso veranstaltet werden, wie
Konferenzen, Kurse, Seminare, Buchpräsentationen,
etc. Es hat einen für
das 18. Jahrhundert typischen Innenhof
mit niedriger gezogenen Bögen
und ionischen Säulen aus rotem Marmor.
Die Treppe, die ursprünglich
zwei Abschnitte hatte, wurde während
eines Umbaus im 19. Jahrhundert
verlängert. Die an den Jugendstil
erinnernde Ansicht der Vorderfront
ist das Werk eines weiteren Umbaus
durch den Architekten Jaume Alenyà
im Jahr 1909.

In the historic centre of Palma, close
to the Cathedral and the Almudaina
Palace, one can visit the March
Palace. Here there is a gallery housing
sculptures by Rodin, Chillida and
Henry Moore, among others; an 18th
century Neapolitan Nativity Scene;
murals by Josep Maria Sert; a collection
of Romanesque and Gothic carvings
entitled ‘Virgins of Europe’; an
exhibition of Gothic retables and
painted panels, ‘Art of the Cathedrals’.
There is also a room of Mallorquin
maps and the exhibition
‘Alchemy and Eternity’ by Dalí.
In der Altstadt von Palma, nahe der
Kathedrale und des Almudaina-
Palais’, kann auch der Palau March
besichtigt werden. Dieses Palais
beherbergt heute u.a. Skulpturen

This old barracks was built between
1774 and 1801 under the direction
of Manuel Santander, Field Marshal
and engineer. The area was the last
bastion to be constructed and with it
the fifth and final walled zone of Palma.
It consists of a central courtyard
surrounded by the city walls, some of
which contain large rooms with barrel
vaulted ceilings, the characteristic
that give its name to this piece of
architecture. (Voltes = vaults). Ses
Voltes has belonged to the Council
since 1985 and at present is a civic
and cultural centre.
Dieses alte Quartier wurde zwischen
1774 und 1801 unter der Aufsicht
von Manuel Santander, Feldmarschall
und Ingenieur, erbaut. Auf derselben
Fläche wurde auch der letzte der insgesamt
fünf gebauten Schutzwälle
fertiggestellt, die die Stadt Palma mit
ihren Mauern umgibt. Im Inneren findet
sich ein Hof, in dessen Mauern
zum Teil grosse Säle eingebaut wurden,
die mit Tonnengewölben überdacht
sind und denen dieser Gebäudekomplex
auch seinen Namen verdankt:
Voltes = Gewölbe. Seit 1985
gehört Ses Voltes der Gemeinde Palma
und ist heute ein den Bürgern
und kulturellen Zwecken gewidmetes
Anwesen.

GRAN HOTEL

Headquarters of the ‘La Caixa’ Foundation.
The building was designed by
the Modernist architect Lluís
Domènec Montaner as a hotel, and
was built between 1901 and 1903.
Nonetheless, the decoration shows
oriental and Neo-gothic influences:
structures that crown the façade with
eagle figures, capitals with floral
designs, polychrome tiles... The Foundation
has a permanent exhibition of
the works of the painter Anglada
Camarasa and organises other temporary
exhibitions as well as a variety
of cultural activities in the theatre.

Gebäude wurde von dem berühmten
Jugendstil-Architekten Lluís Domènec
Montaner als Hotelgebäude entworfen.
Es wurde zwischen 1901 und
1903 erbaut. In der Ausführung des

orientalischen und neogotischen
Charakters vertreten: Aufbauten, die

Stiftung beherbergt eine ständige
Ausstellung des Malers Anglada
Camarasa und organisiert wechselnde
Ausstellungen sowie verschiedene
Veranstaltungen kultureller Art in seiner
Aula.

CASTELL DE BELLVER

This was built by order of King Jaume
II of Mallorca. The builder’s name was
Ponç Descoll. It has a highly original
circular ground plan, with three
round towers, in addition to the main
Tower of Homage, which is both
round and outside the main castle
building. The central courtyard is very
large and surrounded by a double
arched gallery, with round arches on
the ground floor and lancet arches
on the second. The Museum of the
History of the City occupies five
rooms on the ground floor.
Das Kastell wurde auf Anordnung
des Königs von Mallorca, Jaume II.,
erbaut. Der Baumeister war Ponç
Descoll. Es ist ein sehr origineller
Rundbau mit 3 runden Türmen sowie
dem sog. Homenatge-Turm, der
ebenfalls rund gebaut wurde, aber
frei steht. Der Waffenhof hat grosse
Ausmasse und wird von einer doppelstöckigen
Galerie eingerahmt,
deren untere Reihe mit Rundbögen
geschmückt ist, während die zweite
Galerie Spitzbögen aufweist. Das
Museum für Stadtgeschichte (Museu
de Historia de la Ciudad) belegt 5
Säle im Erdgeschoss.

Es Baluard, recently restored, houses Palma’s Museum of
Modern and Contemporary Art. The gallery has become
one of the city’s culture references and a must to visit, in
addition to the driving force behind the area around Plaça
Porta de Santa Catalina. The result, flanked by a breathtaking
selection of sculpture, is an architectural entity
that mixes modern architecture with the old, giving the
visitor the chance to enjoy one of the island’s major collections

previously joined to number 2 of the
same street, conserves many Modernist
details that are to be seen in
the decoration of the courtyard and
the stairway, which is the part of the
original 17th century courtyard that
has been most subject to change. At
present the house can be visited as a
museum.

The defensive fortification of the
harbour of Portopí, St. Carles Castle,
was built in the 18th century. The
museum was opened in 1981 and
has a collection of war and military
items ranging chronologically from
the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
It has five exhibition rooms
containing antique arms.
Die Verteidigungsanlage des Hafens

September 4 is the European Day of Jewish
Culture which on this occasion is
dedicated to the Jewish culinary heritage.
All the cities that are part of the
Network of Spanish Jewish Sites, Palma
among them, organize a series of activities
aimed at making the history and culture
of the Jews more widely known. In
Palma the association ‘ARCA., Jewish
Legacy’ will convert the courtyard of its
historic building into an area where one
can try traditional recipes of the rich Jewish
cuisine. In addition, this September
there will be guided tours of the Jewish
Quarter of Palma, one of the most
important and most surprising Jewish
Quarters of the whole Mediterranean.
These tours are organised by Palma City
Hall and the Balearic Government • Am

talks in which both artists and students

All visitors to Palma know: in the
Balearics they make first class
cheese which is greatly appreciated
by the whole world and which is on
sale all over the city. It is of course
true that of all the cheeses these
Mediterranean islands produce the
best known is from Minorca. As
early as the 15th century, prestigious
traders from Tuscany were
visiting Minorca to purchase wool
and Minorcan cheese. In the 18th
century there were four ships trading
exclusively in Minorcan cheese
throughout the Western Mediterranean..
As a result, it could be said that
there are few products in the world
with a Denomination of Origin
(D.O.) as old as that of the Cheese
Mahón-Menorca. In 1985, for the
first time for a non-wine product,
Minorcan cheese had its special
characteristics officially recognised
and it was awarded the Denomination
of Origin ‘Mahón’, which
became ‘Mahón-Menorca’ in 1988.
It is a cheese, parallelepiped in
shape with rounded edges and corners;
it has a smooth, compact yellowish-brown
rind. The curd is
pressed and any holes are the size
of a grain of rice. It is made in
Minorca from cow’s milk that is
curdled at a low temperature; it is
salted by immersion and cured in
accordance with the customs of the
island. The difference between
cured and semi-cured depends on
the length of the curing process.
The former has a mild, slightly
salty, acid flavour, with aromas
reminiscent of butter and roasted
nuts. As far as cured Mahón
–Menorca cheese is concerned, it
has an intense flavour and aroma,
which linger in the mouth.

den Inseln hergestellten Käse
kommt natürlich aus Menorka.
Schon im 15. Jahrhundert reisten
bedeutende Händler aus der Toskana
nach Menorka, um hier Wolle und
menorkinischen Käse einzukaufen.

Menorca. Im Jahr 1985 und in Spanien
zum ersten Mal für ein nicht
Weinanbauverwandtes Produkt,
wurde dem menorkinischen Käse für
seine besonderen Eigenschaften die
Herkunftsbezeichnung ‘Mahón’ verliehen,
die im Jahre in ‘Mahon-
Menorca’ umgewandelt wurde.
Es handelt sich um einen Käse mit
glatter und kompakter Rinde von
bräunlich-gelblicher Farbe. Die
Käsemasse ist sehr dicht und die
Löcher haben die Grösse von Reiskörnern.
Er wird auf Menorka aus
Kuhmilch bei niedrigen Temperaturen
hergestellt, durch Tauchen
gesalzt und nach Brauch der Insel
gereift. Je nach Reifezeit unterscheidet
man Semicurado und Curado.
Der erste hat einen milden, leicht salzigen
und sauren Geschmack, mit
Aromen, die an Butter und geröstete
Trockenfrüchte erinnern. Der
Geschmack und das Aroma des
Mahon-Menorca curado widerum
sind wesentlich intensiver.
The cheese with D.O. Mahón-Menorca is of exceptional quality and it is commonly exported to countries such as Germany or the United States, where it is known
and appreciated by the most discerning gourmets. As a matter of fact, it has won numerous prizes. Mention should be made of the Silver Medal obtained at the
Interfrom fair in Paris in 1989 or the First Prize for ‘Best Spanish Cheese’ at the awards event held by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 2001 >>>
