La Loire à vélo
By the summer of 2006, the « Loire
à Vélo » network will represent more
than 250 km of secure cycling routes
along the Loire, the majority of which
are in the Loire Valley, listed as World
Heritage by UNESCO.
In the long term, more than 800 km
of itineraries will be open between
Cuffy (Cher) and St Brévin-les-Pins
(Loire-Atlantique). On the European
level, the “Loire à Vélo” is part of the
future “European Rivers Cycle Route”
between Nantes and Budapest
(2400 km).
Safe and sound
Along the route, the car-free cycle
trait links up with quiet back roads,
with little traffic. This ensures
that you have easy access to all the
important sites along the way. The
trait is well marked, so all you have to
do is to follow the arrows!
“La Loire à Vélo” handbook
A special «carnet de route» (handbook)
has been produced, detailing
itineraries, accommodation and
support services specifically for
cyclists on holidays. This ensures
that you get the very best quality and
service during your trip.

Ab dem Sommer 2006 stehen auf
dem Loire-Radweg mehr als 250
km gekennzeichnete und gesicherte
Fahrradstrecken entlang der Loire
und ihrer Zuflüsse zur Verfügung.
Ein Großteil dieser Radwege führt
durch die von der UNESCO zum
Weltkulturgut erklärten Gebiete des
Loiretals.
Geplant ist die Eröffnung von über
800 km Radstrecken zwischen Cuffy
(Departement Cher) und St-Brévin-les-
Pins (Departement Loire-Atlantique).
Europaweit gehört der Loire-Radweg
zum zukünftigen, europäischen
Radfernwanderweg entlang von
Flüssen zwischen Nantes und
Budapest (2400 km).
Angenehm und sicher
Beim Loire-Radweg wechseln sich
reine Radwege mit kleinen, schwach
befahrenen Nebenstrassen ab. Die
Streckenauswahl erlaubt es dem
Radler, in aller Sicherheit den Schätzen
des Loiretals so nahe wie möglich zu
kommen. Die Strecke ist in beiden
Richtungen ausgeschildert – man muss
nur den Pfeilen folgen!
Das Streckenbuch “La Loire à Vélo”
Ein Streckenbuch beschreibt in allen
Einzelheiten den Streckenverlauf
und listet Unterkunfts- und
Dienstleistungsangebote auf, die ganz
besonders auf Radreisende zugeschnitten
sind. Eine wertvolle Hilfe, die Ihnen
guten Service auf der ganzen Strecke
garantiert.

The Loire is Europe’s last
great untamed river. To the east
and south-west of the cathedral in
Orléans lies the perfect itinerary for
a cycle trip, with alternating areas of
unspoilt scenery and Loire Valley
villages that were once the haunts of
boatmen. The harbour and the Loire
Boat Museum in Châteauneuf-sur-
Loire are well worth a visit.
On the other bank, to the south, pedal
quietly along the dykes in towns and
the narrow banks of earth overlooking
the river, the haunt of beavers, swans,
shags, herring gulls, terns.
A delight to the eye. A wide variety of
landscapes follow in succession from
the Orléans Valley and Sandillon
where horticulture reigns supreme, to
the Sully and Gien area a few bends
further on where the hillsides of the
Puisaye and Haut-Berry areas come
into view.
Die Loire, letzter wilder Fluß Europas,
ist östlich und südwestlich von der
Kathedrale Orléans ein einzigartiges
Radrevier inmitten von unberührten
Naturlandschaften und typischen
Dörfern, die den Loire-Schiffern einst
als Orientierungspunkt
dienten. Der Hafen und das Museum
der Loire-Schiffahrt in Châteauneufsur-Loire
verdienen einen Umweg.
Auf dem anderen Ufer aus südlicher
Richtung ist das Radwandern auf
den Deichwegen der Städte und den
schmalen, den Fluß überragenden
Dämmen, wo sich Biber, Schwäne,
Kormorane, Möwen, Seeschwalben
tummeln, ein regelrechtes Vergnügen.
Abwechslungsreiche Landschaften
kennzeichnen die Gegend zwischen
Orléans und Sandillon, das für seine
Blumenzucht berühmt ist, bis nach
Sully und Gien einige Wegbiegungen
weiter, wo die Hänge von Puisaye und
Haut-Berry das Loire-Tal schmücken.

The first thing to strike the imagination is the quality of the

The Cher is all things
to all people. In the south,
there are hills lined with forests;
nearer Touraine, the landscape becomes
gentler, less rugged. Enjoy a delightful trip
between the mysterious southern area once famous for
witchcraft and the north where the Renaissance left its mark.
Amid the green meadows and hedgerows dotted with countless
streams in the depths of the hills, the landscape is rugged. Two
villages vie for the honour of being the geographical centre of France
- Vesdun and Bruère-Allichamps. The area famous for stock-breeding,
with its impressive cattle market in Sancoins, is replaced by the
countryside of Berry and its vast expanses of cereal crops out of which
rises the marvellous cathedral in Bourges. Then come the Porcelain
Trail, the Goats’ Cheese Trail, the Wine Trail, and the Castles and
Gardens Trail via Chenonceaux and Villandry.
Das Cher-Tal zeigt sich von zwei Gesichtern. Die im Süden von Wäldern
gesäumten Hügel gehen in Richtung Touraine allmählich in ein von
sanfteren Linien gezeichnetes Landschaftsbild über. Eine interessante Tour
zwischen dem geheimnisvollen Süden, wo der Hexenglaube lange lebendig
war, und dem von der Renaissance geprägten Norden. Der von Wiesen,
Hecken und unzähligen Wasserläufen durchzogene Landstrich bietet ein
wild zerklüftetes Bild. Hier machen sich die beiden Gemeinden Vesdun
und Bruère-Allichamps das geographische Zentrum Frankreichs streitig.
Auf die Viehzucht und den imposanten Viehmarkt von Sancoins folgt das
Berry mit seinen ausgedehnten Weizenfeldern, aus denen sich die herrliche
Kathedrale von Bourges erhebt. Auf der Fahrt nach Chenonceau und
Villandry kann der Radler wählen zwischen der Straße des Porzellans
und der Straße des Käses, des Weins, der Schlösser und Gärten.
