Art AnD tHe pUBLiC SpHere
Since October 2010, the doctoral programme “Art and the Public Sphere” has
been an integral part of the Art and Science focus area at the University. Five
doctoral students (Bernhard Gál, Laila Huber, Nadja Klement, Sonja Prlić and Luise
Reitstätter) are researching specific questions relating to contemporary art
and cultural practices under the guidance of their supervisors Wolfgang Gratzer,
Kornelia Hahn and Otto Neumaier.
The topics of their dissertation projects are wide-ranging: from computer games
and their potential in political education, to sound installations in art and their
spatial characteristics. Moreover, they range from the symbolic space of the
city and opportunities for creative participation, to exhibitions as a medium and
setting for communicative action, to the debate around art as a label and the
question of attribution or ownership of art itself.
The doctoral students mutually benefit from a multitude of expertise from
academic disciplines such as Cultural Anthropology, Communication Sciences,
Theatre Studies, Media Studies, Art History, Philosophy, Musicology and Dramaturgy,
as well as from the practical experience they apply and integrate into the
programme. Their experiences in the conception and realisation of art projects
(exhibitions, plays, sound installations, etc.) and the focus on discourse and
mediation (talks, symposia, workshops) inevitably lead them to discussions on
the interface of art where theory and practice meet.
To that effect, the doctoral students’ research is characterised by a certain
degree of hybridity, which manifests itself in the way they move around between
various academic disciplines and make a connection between academia and
current social and artistic processes. Depending on the topic and the orientation
of their research, their methods are partly empirical, practice based, artistic or
entirely based on art theory.
When it comes to choosing a format, the doctoral students endeavour to take
up current topics and, by breaking from traditional university teaching methods,
to create new laboratory situations that open up a space for shared experience,
contemplation and learning. They organised a panel discussion on new ways of
researching the relationship between art and science, and developed teaching
modules on topics such as “Aspects of Art Production”, “The Political Element
in Art”, “Art and Urbanity” for the 2011 winter semester and the 2012 summer
semester.
Indeed, it is not only in art that the public sphere represents a vital component.
The doctoral programme, too, aims to face the challenge of research that is
relevant in practice and seeks, through the topics being taught, to create a valuable
communication space within the research area Art and Science.
