Cargo becomes intelligent

Consulting and IT-service provider Logica
Deutschland from Frankfurt is at InnoTrans
for the first time, with a stand focusing on
intelligent transport systems. One highlight
is the Intelligent Cargo logistics and tracking
system developed through the Euridice
consortium (European inter-disciplinary
research on intelligent cargo for efficient,
safe and environmentally-friendly logistics).
“With Intelligent Cargo we achieved the
integration of technology and intelligence
into the load,“ explains Andreas Gerloff,
rail-expert at Logica. “There are numerous
logistics and tracking systems but most
do not serve the needs of the 21st century.
Many of them are designed to support very
specific business processes quickly come up
against their limits, for example when crossing
between different business domains
and transport modes.”
Intelligent Cargo intends to fill this gap.
With this system, each consignment can
actively communicate its position, content
and status in real-time, irrespective of the

Having made its first foray into Europe
at InnoTrans 2010, the Young Railway
Professionals networking group held
another reception yesterday evening.
This attracted guests from at least seven
countries including Denmark, Finland,
China and Japan.
YRP was established in the UK in 2009 as
a pan-industry network to foster career
development among younger professionals
and to enhance the attractiveness
of the rail industry to school and
university leavers. Now numbering in excess
of 1 350 members, YRP is seeking to
strengthen its ties with similar organisations
outside the UK.
During its last visit to Berlin, YRP established
a partnership with Jonge Veranderaars
in the Netherlands. As YRP Chairman
Paul Cooper explains, this ‘first contact’ at
InnoTrans has led to the development of
an exchange programme which sees a JV

to Logica, Intelligent Cargo increases
the efficiency of supply chains, reduces
emissions and ensures product integrity
as well as regulatory compliance.
Other highlights on the Logica stand include:
Mass Data Billing, a SAP-based software
for Consume-to-Cash billing and invoicing;
IBOR, a system for the intelligent
management of infrastructure; and Smart
Ticketing, a mobile solution to optimise
personal travel management.

bei Logica. „Es gibt zahlreiche Logistik-
und Tracking-Systeme, aber kaum welche
sind wirklich auf die Anforderungen des
21. Jahrhunderts ausgelegt. Die meisten
beschränken sich auf einen ganz spezifischen
Geschäftsprozess und stoßen schnell
an ihre Grenzen – zum Beispiel bei unterschiedlichen
Transportarten.“
Mit Intelligent Cargo soll diese Lücke geschlossen
werden. So können Ladestücke
unabhängig von Verkehrsträger und Ladungsart
aktiv und in Echtzeit Informationen
über ihre Position sowie Inhalt und
Status kommunizieren. Nach Angaben
des Unternehmens erhöht Intelligent
Cargo auf diese Weise, die Effizienz von
Lieferketten, stellt die Unversehrtheit der
Fracht sicher, reduziert Emissionen und
trägt damit sowohl logistischen als auch
wirtschaftlichen und zollrechtlichen Aspekten
des Güterverkehrs Rechnung.
Weitere Highlights auf dem Logica-Messestand
sind Mass Data Billing (eine SAPbasierte
Software zur Consume-to-Cash-
Abrechnung von Massendaten), IBOR (ein
System zur intelligenten Steuerung von
Infrastruktur) und Smart Ticketing (eine
mobile Lösung zur Optimierung des persönlichen
Reisemanagements).

sucht neue Verbindungen zu ähnlichen
Organisationen außerhalb Großbritanniens.
Während ihres letzten Besuchs in Berlin
schloss die Gruppe eine Partnerschaft mit
der niederländischen Vertretung „Jonge
Veranderaars“. Wie Paul Cooper, Vorsitzender
von YRP erklärte, hat dieser „erste
Kontakt“ zur Entwicklung eines Austauschprogramms
geführt. YRP empfing
eine JV-Delegation in London. Gemeinsam
führten sie eine Reihe technischer Besichtigungen
im Südosten Englands durch.
Ein Gegenbesuch ist für 2013 geplant.
Zur Förderung von Networking-Möglichkeiten
hat YRP seine Webseite neugestaltet,
um eine stärkere Zusammenarbeit
und größere Offenheit zu fördern.
