Die Arbeit behandelt erstmals im Zusammenhang
ein berühmtes Kapitel Universitäts-, Wissenschaftsund
Familiengeschichte. In Basel hatte von 1588
bis 1732, also 144 Jahre lang, die aus Westfalen
stammende Familie Buxtorf in vier Generationen
den Lehrstuhl für die hebräische Sprache inne. Die
Buxtorfs vermittelten der christlichen Bibelwissenschaft
die Methoden und Resultate der jüdischen
Gelehrsamkeit und waren zugleich streitbare
Vertreter der reformierten Orthodoxie in einer sich
wandelnden geistigen und theologischen Welt.

This study explores a famous chapter of university,
scholarly and family history, placing it in context
for the first time. The Buxtorf family, which
originated from Westphalia, held the Chair of
Hebrew Language at the University of Basel from
1588 to 1732 – a total of 144 years – spanning a
period of four generations. The Buxtorfs conveyed
the methods and findings of Jewish scholarship to
the Christian Bible scholars of the time. With their
eloquent disputations, the Buxtorfs contributed to
the development of reformed orthodoxy in a world
undergoing spiritual and theological transformation.

Im napoleonischen Europa avancierte »Volkserziehung«
zu einem wichtigen Punkt auf der nationalen
Agenda, so dass die Methode Pestalozzis praktische
Relevanz bekam. Darüberhinaus zeigen die Briefe,
auf welche Gegenargumente die Bewunderer
Pestalozzis stießen und wie es zu ersten Konflikten
in seinem Institut auf Schloss Yverdon kam.

The second volume of letters to Pestalozzi covers the
years between 1805 and 1809 and contains almost
400 letters. In the Napoleonic era in Europe “education
of the people” became an important issue on
the national agenda, making Pestalozzi’s method a
matter of practical relevance. Furthermore, the letters
reveal the counterarguments faced by Pestalozzi’s
admirers and how the first conflicts arose in his
institute in the Castle of Yverdon.
