Diese Musik ist unsterblich. In „Immortal Bach“ arrangiert
der norwegische Komponist Knut Nystedt die ersten
Takte aus Bachs Choral „Komm, süßer Tod“, verändert
keine Note und erzeugt mit seinen kurzen Interpretationsanweisungen
dennoch einen neuen Klang, der hier im
Dialog mit der Originalpartitur aus dem Jahr 1736 steht.
„Christus ist der Morgenstern“: In „Christus est Stella“
vertont der Engländer Will Todd ein kurzes mittelalterliches
Gebet des angelsächsischen Benediktinermönchs
Beda Venerabilis, der Norweger Ola Gjeilo schreibt mit
„Serenity“ eine „sinfonische“ A-cappella-Miniatur, der
Lette Eriks Esenvalds lässt sich auf Engelsflügen ins
Paradies tragen und John Tavener verarbeitet in „Svyati“
einen feierlichen Hymnus aus der russisch-orthodoxen
Chrysostomos-Liturgie. Zwischen die geistlichen Chorwerke
schiebt Tobias Chizzali Instrumentalstücke von Vivaldi
und Jean-Baptiste Barrière, dessen virtuoses Spiel
im 18. Jahrhundert dem bis dahin wenig beachteten Violoncello
zum Durchbruch verhilft.

Questa musica è immortale. In “Immortal Bach”, il compositore
norvegese Knut Nystedt arrangia le prime battute
della corale di Bach “Komm, süßer Tod” (Vieni, dolce
morte), non cambia una nota e tuttavia crea un nuovo
suono con le sue brevi istruzioni interpretative, che qui
dialogano con la partitura originale del 1736. “Cristo è
la stella del mattino”: Christus est Stella”, l’inglese Will
Todd mette in musica una breve preghiera medievale
del monaco benedettino anglosassone Beda Venerabilis,
il norvegese Ola Gjeilo scrive una miniatura “sinfonica”
a cappella con “Serenity”, il lettone Eriks Esenvalds
si lascia portare su voli di angeli verso il paradiso, e
John Tavener elabora un inno solenne della liturgia ortodossa
russa del Crisostomo in “Svyati”. Tra le opere
corali sacre, Tobias Chizzali intercala brani strumentali
di Vivaldi e Jean-Baptiste Barrière, il cui virtuosismo
nel XVIII secolo aiutò ad imporsi il violoncello che, fino
ad allora, aveva goduto di poca considerazione

This music is immortal. In “Immortal Bach”, the Norwegian
composer Knut Nystedt arranges the first bars
from Bach’s chorale “Komm, süßer Tod” (Come, sweet
death), does not change a note and yet creates a new
sound with his brief interpretive instructions, which
here is in dialogue with the original score from 1736.
“Christ is the Morning Star”: Christus est Stella”, the
Englishman Will Todd sets to music a short medieval
prayer by the Anglo-Saxon Benedictine monk Beda Venerabilis,
the Norwegian Ola Gjeilo writes a “symphonic”
a cappella miniature with “Serenity”, the Latvian Eriks
Esenvalds lets himself be carried on flights of angels to
paradise and John Tavener processes a solemn hymn
from the Russian Orthodox liturgy of Chrysostom in
“Svyati”. Between the sacred choral works, Tobias Chizzali
intersperses instrumental pieces by Vivaldi and
Jean-Baptiste Barrière, whose virtuoso playing in the
18th century helped the violoncello, which had received
little attention until then, to achieve a breakthrough.
