Welcome to the second issue of our Quarterly magazine. Since I wrote the foreword to my first ‚Quarterly‘ a few
weeks ago, the unimaginable has happened: we have war in Europe again. Following the pictures and reports from
Ukraine makes us all concerned and sad. In addition to the economic consequences we have drawn since the beginning
of the war, we as a company are trying to support aid organisations and offer refugees from Ukraine a professional
perspective. We all hope that this terrible war will end soon.
In my first few weeks at Bürklin Elektronik I have had many interesting discussions with customers and suppliers
and also received a great response to the first 2022 issue of the magazine three months ago (14.02.2022). I would
like to thank you very much for this.
We at Bürklin Elektronik are working flat out to continuously develop both the customer and supplier experience.
A competent range of products from renowned and innovative manufacturers, available the same day from our
warehouse in Munich is the core of our performance promise to our customers in Germany, Europe and worldwide.
In the next few months we will go live with our new online shop - another important milestone in the long successful
history of Bürklin Elektronik. Caren (head of our e-commerce team) already offers a small foretaste of our
new shop in this issue. The new online shop will complete our transformation from the first and leading catalogue
distributor in Germany to a European/international digital distributor based in Munich.
In addition to the article about our new online shop, we have compiled numerous interesting topics for you.
You can also find current information about our company and vacancies on Linkedin.
Visit us - it‘s worth it.
Enjoy reading and stay healthy.
Best regards
OPTIMIZED SEARCH
SMART BÜRKLIN
ONLINE SHOP
THE NEW SEARCH AS A CENTRAL ELEMENT
OF THE NEW ONLINE SHOP IMPROVES THE FINDABILITY AND
PRESENTATION OF THE ENTIRE RANGE OF OUR PRODUCTS.
TECHNOLOGY CHANGE
& GO-LIVE REALIZATION
As reported in Quarterly
#01/2022, Bürklin
Elektronik has decided to
change the technology in
the current project and as
a result to realign the project.
Our implementation
partner Bits&Minds GmbH
will develop a storefront for
us based on our individual
Bürklin requirements -
the shop window into our
range of electronics products.
Together we plan
to realize an anticipated
Go-Live of the new online
shop in the first half of
2022.
INSIGHTS INTO
THE OPTIMIZED
BÜRKLIN SEARCH
On the following pages
we would like to introduce
you - dear customers and
suppliers - to the heart of
our new online shop in detail
- our optimized Bürklin
search. This new search
enables our customers to
find the perfect non-trivial
orientation in our assortment
of products – around
500,000 products from over
5000 well-known manufacturers.
We would like
to show you how you can
quickly and easily find your
desired products with just
a few clicks, what the advantages
of the new search
are and much more.
ACCURATE SEARCH
RESULTS IN THE
ONLINE SHOP
What used to take place
in the Bürklin store in a
dialog between customer
and sales staff is now
in the digital age often
reduced to customer´s
just entering a few search
terms in the online shop
and getting matching articles
displayed. The focus
is thus on a high-quality
search that enables customers
to make their own
product selection in the
online shop.
BASIS:
HIGH DATA QUALITY
The basis for a good
search is relevant and
high-quality product data.
One of the key jobs of the
content team is to furnish
articles sold in the online
ship with descriptive attributes
so that the articles
can be found more easily.
We already reported in
detail on product data
management, its challenges
and our PIM system
TECHNICAL
IMPLEMENTATION &
CONTINUOUS
IMPROVEMENT
Bürklin Elektronik uses
Elasticsearch as the basis
for its search. The fact that
Bits&Minds GmbH is also
an official Elastic partner
means an enormously
important advantage for
Bürklin Elektronik, also in
the future: store development
and continuous
optimization of the search
from a single source!
All our requirements &
customer needs can be
implemented individually
and flexible. The programming
of the search and its
functions is a continuous
development process,
which is based on facts
and figures of our customers‘
search behavior
and continuously considers
customer feedback on the
current online shop.
COOPERATION
BÜRKLIN ELEKTRONIK +
BITS&MINDS GmbH
Bits&Minds GmbH has
been successfully active in
individual software development
for many years.
Due to the large wealth of
experience and the high
professional competence,
even particularly demanding
projects can be successfully
implemented.
In addition, applications
with extensive and complex
searches on large
amounts of data represents
a main competence
of Bits&Minds GmbH. The
technical implementation
is always complemented
with competent advice and
support from the specialist
department. This makes
it possible to optimally set
up and successfully integrate
a search.
OUR PROMISE TO YOU:
OPTIMIZED SEARCH
Our customers will find the
products they are looking
for easily and quickly with
the help of the comprehensive
search and filter
functions.
REAL-TIME PRICES
& AVAILABILITY
Prices & availability are
displayed in real time –
based on the data in our
merchandise management
system.
INTUITIVE USABILITY
& ORIENTATION
The user-friendly design
with a very good usability,
an intuitive orientation and
a fast-loading time will
enthuse our customers.
EXTENDED CUSTOMER
SELF-SERVICE
FUNCTIONS
With extended customer
self-services we create
a clear added value and
optimize the purchasing
processes of our professional
customers in the
long term.
PORTFOLIO DESIGN
& DATA QUALITY
We communicate to our
customers the entire
range of our electronics
products in the new online
shop in a user-friendly
and comprehensible way.
SIMPLY & QUICKLY
TO THE RIGHT RESULT
Since the discontinuation
of the famous Bürklin catalog
it is a constant challenge
for us to represent
this wealth of different
products with all their various
technical features in
an online shop. Since the
beginning of the project,
we have put a special focus
on the new search: THE
ENTIRE RANGE OF OUR
ELECTRONICS PRODUCTS
should be comprehensible.
We want to make it as easy
as possible for our users
- you, dear customers - to
find what you are looking
for. It should be a pleasure
to click through the
assortment and to find the
matching accessories or
the substitution article in
addition to the article you
are looking for. Searches
within the online shop
should quickly lead to a
suitable result and further
narrowing down should be
effortless.
WANTED? - FOUND!
Basically, we can distinguish
the two common
types of user behavior in
our online shop.
1. someone is looking for
a component or an article
for a specific purpose. The
requirements are clear,
but there is some flexibility
e.g. in the choice of manufacturer
or form factor.
2. For a very specific
component is searched.
Maybe even already with
the corresponding known
Bürklin number often also
based on the manufacturer
part number.
We will accommodate both
variants equally in our new
online shop.
ACCESS VIA
OUR PRODUCT MENU
If you are looking for a
capacitor you have for
example the possibility to
select the corresponding
category via our usual
product menu or to enter
via the appropriate subcategory,
e.g. Wired Resistors.
NEW PRODUCT FILTER
ON ALL
SEARCH RESULTS PAGES
So far, so well known. But
already in the 1st sublevel
comes the first innovation!
There you will find our new
product filter. Here we
have paid special attention
to make it as easy and
fast as possible for you to
filter out the desired item
from the product set based
on different but always
matching properties.
The filters include some
basic filters, which are the
same in every category or
on every search results
page. For example, the
manufacturer selection
or filtering for in-stock
products.
DYNAMICALLY
BUILT FILTERS
MULTIPLE SELECTION
PER FILTER
Below you will find the
dynamically built filters
for the technical characteristics
of the products
you are looking for. In the
category „leaded resistors“
the ohmic resistance, the
power and tolerance are
immediately found as important
filter criteria - but
beyond that supplemented
with further dynamically
calculated filters.
SEARCH FOR VALUES
& ADJUST UNITS
Within the filters you can
search for values and in
case of numeric values
adjust the unit.
For example, if I am looking
for a wired resistor with
10kOhm, I can quickly and
easily set the unit to kOhm
and filter for „10“, or I leave
the unit at Ohm and search
for „10000“. Both leads to
success.
THE FILTERS ARE
REGENERATED
IMMEDIATELY AFTER
EACH FILTERING
In parallel and immediately
the dynamic filters are
regenerated. All filter
values available for selection
come from articles
that match the previously
selected criteria. You will
not be confronted with impossible
filter combinations
or unavailable filter values.
With only a few clicks you
can quickly and comfortably
set all necessary criteria
via the filters. Try it out and
browse through the depths
of our assortment and
discover new products or
similar products of higher
quality or at a lower price!
It is also possible to set
multiple values per filter,
e.g. you can search resistors
with a certain ohmic
value, but limit the tolerance
only a little.
In the view result list you
can compare the products
at a glance. Analogous to
the filters the properties
arranged in columns are
displayed optimally.
COMPARE TECHNICAL
PROPERTIES AT A
GLANCE
The technical properties
are displayed directly on
the right. This way you
always keep an overview
and can sort again in your
already pre-filtered list
by clicking on the column
header.
If you want an explicit and
detailed product comparison
between several
products, you can also use
our new product comparison
for this purpose.
DISPLAY OF
PRODUCT VARIANTS
In the new online shop
articles are also displayed
in the context of product
families to give customers
a comprehensive overview
of related or similar
articles.
In order to avoid displaying
the same article in different
versions - e.g. size,
color - several times during
the search, these related
product variants are now
displayed as such. The article
that best matches your
search within the variant
articles now appears. This
leads to the fact that with
When you click on the
button, you will be redirected
to the product detail
page directly to the product
variants.
the search for „resistance“
now not many very similar
articles e.g. from the same
manufacturer series are
indicated, but always only
one representative of this
product family. You can recognize
that articles belong
together by the fact that the
article is marked with the
„more variants“ button.
Here you can conveniently
filter within the variants
as you are already used
to from the search results
page. This function is
particularly practical, for
example if you like a manu-
facturer‘s series and want
to buy different products
from this series. Normally,
these articles are maintained
as variants by our
product managers and can
be found easily and quickly.
The filter will only show the
matching value including
the number of products
with that searched value in
our assortment. One click
on it and the filter will be
applied immediately - the
search result or the articles
within the selected
category will contain only
those with the desired filter
value.
BMV ELEKTRONIK FERTIGUNG GMBH
COOPERATION
AT EYE LEVEL FOR
OVER 30 YEARS
The many satisfied customers have
remained loyal to BMV for decades
and swear by the flexible and committed
service as well as the high
quality required of an ISO 9001 certified
manufacturing company.
Also due to the support through
Bürklin Elektronik, BMV was able
to maintain production without interruptions
even in the event of delivery
bottlenecks and component availability
problems.
BMV supplies customers from a
wide range of industries, including
medical technology, mechanical
engineering, aerospace, nuclear
power, automotive and many more.
Due to steadily increasing demand,
BMV has worked on further expanding
SMD production in recent years.
After the PCBs have been assembled
with the modern automatic assembly
machines, they are gently soldered
in a vapor phase. This is followed
by a final inspection using an AOI
system to ensure consistent and
flawless quality.
At the customer‘s request, flux
residues and other impurities can be
removed from the circuit boards in a
cleaning machine specially provided
for this purpose.
The BMV team is there for you every
day with passion and full commitment
to meet the demands of your
products.
SMD assembly,
fast and flexible
Expert assembly
and wiring
BMV Elektronik Fertigung GmbH
was founded 33 years ago as a
small medium-sized company in
Martinsried near Munich.
In the course of time, SMD and THT
PCB assembly in pure and mixed
form has been added to the former
core competences of assembling
THT PCBs, mounting and wiring
assemblies. Another focus is the
manufacture of cables.
From the assembly of individual
components to complete systems
and control cabinets, BMV Elektronik
Fertigung GmbH manufactures in
small and medium quantities. On
request, it tests assemblies according
to customer specifications
and creates the corresponding test
protocols, which are both supplied
and archived.
Of course, the service also includes
the procurement of components with
special attention to speed, availability
and the best possible prices.
To ensure medium- and long-term
supply security, the company offers
TDK
TVS DIODES OFFER HIGHLY
RELIABLE AND COMPLETE ESD
PROTECTION SOLUTIONS FOR
USB TM TYPE-C ® CONNECTORS
Except for the four GND
(ground) pins, ESD protection
is needed on 20 pins.
This protection is achieved
by connecting small ESD
protection TVS diodes from
the pin to GND. If an ESD
event occurs, these will redirect
the transient current
to GND. TDK TVS diodes
are designed with a snapback
feature with extremely
low clamping voltage
characteristics due to their
“thyristor structure”. This
feature helps to guarantee
the reliable limitation of
over-voltage.
Pins are divided into three
different functional groups
based on pin functionalities,
and three different
TVS components have been
developed accordingly. This
ensures efficient and suitable
protection, as shown
in the following overview.
The USB Type-C ® connector
is the most common
interface for computers,
tablets and smartphones.
It supports high-speed
data transfer as well as
fast charging of peripheral
devices. Like other
interfaces, USB TM Type-C ®
connectors are frequently
exposed to Electro Static
Discharges (ESD), which
may cause damage to the
sensitive electronics of
the connected devices.
Therefore, connector pins
must be properly protected
against ESD. The layout
and performance of USB
Type-C ® connectors require
specific ESD protection.
TDK has developed Transient
Voltage Suppressor
(TVS) diodes, which are
specifically designed to
protect USB Type-C ®
connectors. The TDK TVS
portfolio provides the ideal
solutions for the highspeed
data pins up to 40
Gbps using the fast USB TM
4 40G protocol, as well as
the Thunderbolt protocol.
Furthermore, TDK TVS
diodes support fast device
charging via power delivery
protocol and the respective
pins.
One of the handy features
of the USB Type-C ®
connector is its flippabiliy
with no up or down orientation,
which has been
achieved by mirroring the
pins on both sides of the
connector. Figure 1 shows
all 24 pins densely arranged
without leaving
much space for protection
diodes. Additionally,
the best practice for ESD
protection is to place
an ESD component as
close as possible to the
connector at risk of being
exposed to the source of
the transient event. Due
to their miniaturized size,
TDK TVS diodes fit perfectly
into the application. TDK
TVS diodes offer robust
protection with minimal
space consumption. All
types comply with the IEC
61000-4-2 system-level
ESD standard.
USB Type-C ® pin-out
For super-speed Tx/Rx high
data-rate pins, TDK offers
ULC TVS diodes with low
reverse working voltage
(±3.3 V) and ultra-low
capacitance. ULC TVS
diodes have been tested
and certified by an independent
certification lab for
applications with USB TM 4
40 Gbps data rates and
Thunderbolt TM signals. Test
results show that TDK TVS
protection diodes do not
impair the communication
signal on the lines.
For the protection of the
differential signal D+/Dpins,
TDK offers TVS diodes
with a working voltage of
±5.5 V that are perfectly
suited to USB 2 signal
levels and that have a low
parasitic capacitance.
For VBUS power pins and
neighboring CC (Configuration
Channel) and SBU
(Sideband Use) pins, TDK
TVS diodes support reverse
working voltages up to ±20
V and fast charging functionality
with a USB PD
(USB Power Delivery) of up
to 100 W with 5 A/20 V.
The corresponding data
sheets are available at
Test reports and reliability
reports are available upon
request.
HELLERMANNTYTON
HEAT SHRINK TUBING:
WITH EXPERTISE THROUGH
THICK AND THIN
From coloured and transparent heat shrink with or without adhesive to heat shrinkable moulded parts:
HellermannTyton, the cable management specialist, offers a comprehensive range of heat shrink products
in a variety of styles and sizes that meet the highest standards.
Heat shrink tubing is used when assembling cable sets.
For example, to insulate the wires or cables, to provide
additional mechanical protection or to mark them. There
are five basic parameters that are decisive for the success
of a heat shrink application:
1. THE WALL THICKNESS
In general, a distinction is made between thin-, medium-
and thick-walled shrink tubing. The variants with an
inner layer of adhesive are often referred to as doublewalled.
The material thickness should be stated in mm
after complete shrinkage.
„Nominal“ means dimensions without any tolerances.
2. THE DIAMETER
For thin-walled heat shrink tubing, the diameter is
usually given in inches; 25.4 mm equals 1 inch.
3. THE RATE OF SHRINKAGE
The shrink ratio indicates how much the product
shrinks, i.e. the supplied expanded diameter in relation
to the diameter after shrinking. The shrink ratio varies
from 2:1 to 6:1. The higher the ratio, the greater the range
of applications that the tubing can cover. As a result,
fewer shrink tubing sizes are usually needed.
4. THE LENGTH CHANGE
Heat shrinkable tubing not only shrinks in diameter,
but also in length. The so-called longitudinal shrinkage
is given as a percentage.
5. THE RIGHT SIZE
Select the tubing size so that a minimum shrinkage of
20 % and a maximum of 80 % is possible.
MEDIUM WALL MA47 HEAT SHRINK TUBING
with inner adhesive offers reliable protection against
moisture and other environmental influences. With a
generous shrinkage rate of up to 4:1, it is particularly
suitable for low voltage applications above and below
the ground. MA47 is available in 11 sizes from 8 mm to
140 mm, supplied in 1 m lengths.
THIN-WALLED HIS HEAT SHRINK TUBING
is designed for everyday use. The HIS range is available
with or without an inner layer of adhesive. It is available
in various colours and with shrink ratios of 2:1 and 3:1.
The handy dispenser boxes with small reels are particularly
useful for electrical repairs.
DOES THE TUBING FIT?
Not sure if a ece of heat shrinkable tubing will fit your
application? Simply enter the required dimensions into
the HellermannTyton online heat shrink calculator.
It will then suggest the right size for you.
HOW THICK DOES THE WALL REMAIN?
When at shrink tubing is processed, both the diameter
and the wall thickness change. This online wall thickness
calculator helps you to determine the theoretical
wall thickness for a specific diameter.
FULL FLEXIBILITY
FOR PORTABLE HEAT SHRINKING
HOT TIPS FOR PERFECT HEAT SHRINKING
Start the shrinking process in the middle of the tube.
From there, move outwards to one end and then again
from the middle to the other end. This way you avoid
trapping air under the tubing.
Shrink tubing also shrinks in the longitudinal direction,
i.e. it becomes shorter overall when shrunk. You should
take this shrinkage rate into account when cutting
sections.
If the object to be wrapped is heat conductive, make
sure to preheat the object to avoid “cold spots“. This
will ensure a tight and smooth fit.
When cutting heat shrink tubing to the desired length,
take special care to cut the ends smoothly. Poorly cut
and irregular ends can cause heat shrink tubing to tear
during shrinking.
When selecting the tubing size, it is important to follow
the 80:20 rule. Select the size so that it can shrink by at
least 20% and at most 80%.
DON‘T FORGET
With the brand new CHG900 cordless heat gun, shrinking
on the go is a joy.
FASTER RESULTS WITH THE CORDLESS ALL-ROUNDER
The CHG900 is a gas hot air blower designed for shrink
applications where no power source is available or full
mobility is desired. It is also suitable for soft soldering,
plastic moulding or defrosting.
The handy tool generates instant, adjustable heat from
190 °C up to 900 °C and produces no open flame. It provides
1.5 hours of operation per cartridge, even at low
air temperatures around -8 °C. Only after 60 minutes of
continuous operation is a short rest period of 15 minutes
required to allow the internal components to cool
down and avoid damage.
No battery-powered hot air tool offers this much autonomy
for heat shrinking. Its operating time depends
on the number of shrinking processes, the shrinking
temperature and the shrinking time.
But with a full gas cartridge, the CHG900 works reliably
for about 90 minutes regardless of the number, temperature
and duration of the shrinkages. The charging
time of a battery-powered device usually takes longer
than the cooling time of the CHG900.
LIGHT AND HANDY
The CHG900 weighs only 555 g including a full P445 gas
cartridge. This makes it one of the lightest hot air guns
on the market. The gas cartridges, as well as critical
spare parts such as the piezo ignition and the gas nozzle,
can be replaced quickly and without additional tools.
The empty cartridges are also fully recyclable.
The CHG900 can be placed securely in a stable position
for horizontal or vertical heat flows. The integrated
stand frees up both hands for maximum control when
shrinking.
During shrinking, always ensure that the workplace is
well ventilated and that you wear personal protective
equipment such as gloves and safety goggles.
Use a heat gun that has a secure stand on the workbench
so that you can work on the shrink application
with both hands.
MENTOR
M-FIBRE – INNOVATIVE
SIDE LIGHT FIBRE FOR
PRODUCT-INTEGRATED
LIGHT SOLUTIONS
M-Fibre detailed view:
The system consists of
a sidelight fibre and sheath,
an LED driver, a mixing
optic integrated in
the RGB module and
matching LED modules.
MENTOR, one of the leading specialists in productintegrated
light, is extending its technology range for
customised light solutions with the addition of M-Fibre,
a new side light fibre system.
M-Fibre system consist
of the actual fibre, compact
yet highly efficient
LED-modules and the
matching drivers. MENTOR
offers the M-Fibre system’s
individual components on
stock or as customised
applications, which will be
deigned and manufactured
according to the customer’s
specific requirements.
The standard range includes
different fibres for
different lengths of illumination
(250 mm to 3,000
mm). Up to an illuminated
length of 1,500 mm only
one LED module is required,
for greater lengths
the application of two
modules is recommended.
In terms of performance
the customers may choose
between two options, as
well as either a white or
RGB-LED module. Inside
the LED module a precision
optic ensures a perfect
mixing of the designated
colour, as well as enabling
premium light quality and
greatest efficiency thanks
to focussing the light
beams in an ideal way.
The fibres used for the
M-Fibre are thin, flexible
and allow small bend radii
– all the while effectively
providing homogenous
luminance without visible
colour deviations with a
radiation angle of 360°.
To ensure this, polymer optical
fibres (POFs in short)
made of PMMA are activated
by supplying them with
a light-dispersing surface
structure. Afterwards the
fibres are bundled and
coated with a diffused
cover.
Depending on the application,
the fibres can be
activated across the entire
length or only partially.
With partial activation, only
specific areas of the side
light fibre are lit up in a
targeted and loss-optimised
manner. This prevents
undesired scattered
light and optimises the
efficiency of the integrated
lighting system. With this
technology, multi-coloured
applications and running
lights or similar dynamic
lighting scenarios are also
possible.
In connection with single or
multi-coloured LED modules
for one or two-sided
lighting, M-Fibre allows for
lighting solutions that are
optimised to the installation
space and can be
installed flexibly over a
length of several metres.
Thanks to the modular structure, the replacement of the fibres
or the LED module for after-sales service is quick and easy.
An integrated mixing lens inside the RGB colour modules
ensures good colour mixing and a consistent colour impression
across the entire length.
Unlike other POF solutions
available on the market,
M-Fibre is not available
as rolled goods or standard
solutions, but is a
lighting system in which
all individual components
are optimally tailored to
the respective customer
requirements. In addition to
the system’s high flexibility
and outstanding light
quality, other advantages
of the new, largely toolfree
technology, are the
low initial costs and short
development times.
The new side light fibre
gives product designers
and developers multiple
ways of achieving functional
yet decorative linear
lighting or indirect ambient
lighting. Integration in
freeform surfaces is also
easily possible. Through
the spatial separation of
the light source and the
light emitting surface,
M-Fibre can also be used
under water, in explosion
protection areas and in the
food industry.
The fields of application
for high-quality, productintegrated
light of this
kind are wide-ranging.
The automotive, Smart
Clothing / Smart Luggage
and mechanical engineering
sectors, building services
engineering, residential
and office furniture or
domestic appliances and
safety technology are just
a few examples.
ESD - THE INVISIBLE DANGER
WHAT DOES ESD MEAN?
ESD stands for electrostatic discharge.
It is caused by the sudden
equalization of charge between objects
with a different charge potential.
This discharge can generate a
large amount of electrical current.
SOURCE
HOW IS ELECTROSTATIC
CHARGE GENERATED?
Every object has positive and negative
elementary particles. Positive
and negative charges normally neutralise
each other. Objects are electrically
neutral. However, if an object
loses electrons, an imbalance arises.
This imbalance is called the charge
potential. Charged objects have a
tendency to equalise by discharging.
In the event of a sudden discharge,
high currents flow in a small electronic
component.
ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE
IN EVERYDAY LIFE
The most visible form of electrostatic
discharge is lightning during a storm,
when clouds with different potentials
abruptly discharge. All of us have
at one point experienced a sudden
discharge, such as after walking
across a carpeted floor and then
touching the handle of a door.
COMPONENT SENSITIVITY
The ESD sensitivity of electronic
components is rising as component
parts are increasingly miniaturised.
Moreover, ever smaller components
offer less and less space for protective
circuits on microchips. In order
to save energy, components need to
get by on less power. A discharge
of just 50 volts is enough to cause
damage to a blue LED, for example.
SMDs are already at risk of damage
at voltages higher than 100 V. In
contrast to this, the human ability to
perceive ESD is very limited.
Discharges are first noticeable from
3500 volts, audible from 4500 volts
and visible from 10000 volts.
DETECTING AND ELIMINATING
FAULTS
Components damaged by ESD cannot
normally be seen with the naked
eye. Even tiny discharges can lead
to complete failure. These direct
failures can usually be identified
during quality control. So-called
latent failures are especially critical,
as they only become apparent when
products are in operation. The time
and effort needed to eliminate these
intrinsic failures cause the greatest
costs. ESD damage generally concerns
latent damage. It is therefore
absolutely essential that the appropriate
precautions are taken.
MEASUREMENT OF RESISTANCES
IN THE ESD AREA
In addition to surface resistance,
the following resistances are also
important: the bleeder resistance
(resistance against earth/protective
conductor), volume resistance (resistance
measured at opposite points
of a material) and point-to-point
resistance (resistance between two
electrodes).
PERSONS AND WORKPLACES
EQUIPMENT
If ESD-sensitive components are
being handled, people and workplace
equipment need to be ESD compliant.
The primary focus for people
is ESD-compliant clothing (shoes,
coats, antistatic wrist straps), for
workplace equipment, conductive
flooring is just as important as
ESD-compliant workbenches and
chairs. The most important measure
is the proper grounding of personnel.
ESD COMPLIANT TOOL
ESD-compliant tools are also just as
important. In the Bernstein catalogue,
you will find a comprehensive
range of ESD-compliant tools for
use in ESD protected areas. Often
work needs to be performed outside
of these protected areas, in which
ESD-sensitive components need to
be installed. We offer solutions here
too, which are suitable for mobile
use, such as table covers, grounding
KNIPEX
CRIMPING TOOLS:
SAFE AND COMPLIANT
WITH STANDARDS
FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
ELECTRONIC PLIERS:
COMPACT AND POWERFUL
FOR CUTTING AND GUIDING ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS
With the rapid increase
in electric drives and the
necessary control electronics,
the need for fast
and at the same time safe
connections is growing.
Connector types such as
Scotchlok connectors,
Western connectors, modular
connectors, Cannon
connectors and many more
are suitable for crimping
- i.e. pressing in which
the connection is made by
using a compression tool.
The complexity of possible
crimp connections is
constantly increasing. In
addition to flexible and solid
wires, fibre optic cables,
antenna cables, telephone
and LAN cables and many
other types of cables can
now also be processed with
crimping tools.
KNIPEX offers a wide range
of solutions for the safe
and standard-compliant
connection of cables and
connectors. From the inexpensive
wire end crimping
pliers as a light and
compact hand tool to the
universal crimping system
pliers Multi-Crimp®
to the semi-automatic
electrically driven eCrimp
system pliers with over
1,500 interchangeable,
different crimping sets -
at KNIPEX the user has all
the options in your hand.
And innovative support
to boot. For example,
universally adjustable
positioning aids or electronic
displays for wear
and necessary calibration
for crimping pliers for very
sensitive crimp connections.
CRIMPZANGES
IN DIFFERENT VERSIONS
Due to the large number
of different plug connections,
crimping pliers are
required in many different
versions. As a rule, these
pliers are operated with
one hand - for particularly
large conductor crosssections,
however, there
are also models that facilitate
two-hand operation
due to their favourable
design.
A battery-operated version
is also available. Versatility
is also demonstrated by
models that are suitable
not only for crimping but
also for stripping and cutting
cables.
FERRULES PLIERS
A wire end ferrule pliers
exerts pressure on the wire
end ferrule and wire from
all sides via four crimping
parts. The resulting plastic
deformation in the respective
crimp profile leads to
a mechanically strong and
electrically safe connection.
SELF-ADJUSTING
CRIMPING PLIERS
Crimping pliers that are
able to automatically
adjust to the crosssection
of the sleeves to
be processed have been
developed especially for
the professional sector.
This guarantees the use of
the correct crimping jaws
at all times - which makes
crimping faster and more
comfortable.
FOUR-PRONGED
CRIMPING PLIERS
Particularly demanding
plug connections are found,
for example, in areas such
as the automotive industry,
aviation or medicine.
Here, turned contacts are
required.
Four- mandrel crimping
pliers are capable of producing
these high-quality
crimp connections. Four
synchronously running jaws
evenly press a mandrel
profile into the connector.
Electronic pliers do not
differ significantly from
normal pliers except for
their smaller size. The
most common designs due
to the intended use are as
follows are the side cutters
and gripping pliers.
KNIPEX offers special
tools for cutting wires and
components on circuit
boards: electronic side
cutters with a wide range
of head, cutting edge and
bevel shapes.
Special care must always
be taken where electronics
and sensitive components
are involved.
That is why many pliers are
also available as ESD tools.
ESD is the abbreviation for
„electrostatic discharge“
- the discharge of small
voltage breakdowns that
can quickly cause serious
damage to electronic components.
By using ESD pliers, the
hardware is protected
because the circuit can
flow and is not blocked, so
that voltage surges cannot
occur.
With their often delicate
construction, electronic
pliers are sensitive to mechanical
overload. Therefore,
they should always be
used with due respect for
the delicate nature of these
pliers. The maximum wire
diameters printed on the
handles of cutting pliers
must be observed.
The particularly high-quality
precision electronics
pliers are made of ball
bearing chrome steel,
which ensures the highest
possible load capacity for
these filigree pliers.
SPECIAL ADVANTAGES
OF THE KNIPEX
ELECTRONIC PLIERS
Thanks to a series of
extensive changes in the
range of pierced electronics
pliers, KNIPEX Elektroniktool,
which has once again
significantly improved the
outstanding properties of
its predecessors.
From the classic side cutters
to end cutters, diagonal
cutters and flat nose
pliers: KNIPEX electronic
pliers are now even more
durable, more powerful and
with even more sensitivity.
By using ball bearing
chrome steel in the entire
family of box joint electric
pliers, KNIPEX offers tools
that provide the most
accurate feedback from the
pliers tip to the handle due
to their bending behaviour.
It is precisely there that
an optimally designed
single-component shell
now ensures exceptional
handiness in the slimmest
handle variants.
Thanks to the use of new
manufacturing processes
and optimised materials,
the end cutters not only
score with slim handles,
but also with slimmer
heads. This makes it even
easier to reach through in
narrow working environments.
Last but not least: Both
the single- and two-component
sleeves have a much
slimmer design in the front
area, so that the pliers can
be guided very sensitively
with the thumb and forefinger.
The cutting behaviour
of the pliers has once
again been significantly
improved by changing the
geometries and transmission
ratios. The resulting
savings in force are another
convincing argument for
choosing KNIPEX.
SCHURTER
SAFE CHARGING
AT HOME
Electric vehicles are powered by lithium-ion battery packs. Although they are used in billions of applications
worldwide from cars to the latest cell phones, they are sensitive constructions. However, if care is taken during
the charging process the battery life and safety can be significantly increased.
If you are thinking about buying an electric vehicle, it
makes sense to consider at an early stage how this vehicle
should be supplied with energy. In the vast majority
of cases this will involve charging at home. That is why
we want to limit ourselves to this point in this article.
What do we need to look out for?
DURATION OF THE CHARGING PROCESS
The calculation for the loading time is done quickly. Take
the battery capacity of a vehicle in kWh and divide it by
the power (kW) of the charging station. This gives you
the number of hours for a full charge.
THE WEAKEST LINK DETERMINES THE PACE
During the charging process always keep in mind that
it consists of the mains supply, the charging station,
the charging cable and the charger, just like a chain.
The weakest link of such a chain always determines the
maximum charging power. Thus, if the charger only has
a capacity of 6.6 kW, it does not be of any help to „pump“
some current into the batteries with a 22 kW charging
station.
FAST CHARGING SHORTENS SERVICE LIFE
Fast charging harms every lithium-ion battery. Charging
and discharging lithiumion cells can lead to lithium
plating. Lithium ions are deposited on the anode surface
instead of nesting between the layers of graphite. This
effect leads to significant losses in performance, service
life and safety. In extreme cases, lithium plating can
even lead to a short circuit or since metallic lithium is
highly flammable, to a fire.
CHARGING ON 1-PHASE MAINS
The smallest available wall charging stations are
connected to the 230 V/16 A household mains supply.
These wall charging stations can only be used for
single-phase charging up to about 3.6 kW. This is only
practical in a few cases. For example, vehicles with low
battery capacity for short distances or plug-in hybrids
that do not rely exclusively on the electric motor.
CHARGING ON 3-PHASE MAINS
A large number of wall charging stations for the private
sector are connected to 400 V/16 A three-phase current
(11 kW max. charging capacity). Practically every household
offers this possibility without additional changes to
the power supply system. This already reduces the
charging times by a factor of 3. The simple design of
these wall charging stations is particularly advantageous,
as in addition to 3-phase charging, the standard
on-board chargers can also be operated at 230 V (max.
3.6 kW) on one phase without further fusing.
If you need more power, you have to upgrade the power
supply. For example, to a stronger wall charging station
with 400 V/32 A (22 kW) or 400 V/63 A (44 kW). However,
you are dependent on the help of a specialist for this. It
is also imperative to clarify the technical (existing electrical
load) and legal (tenants, owners) feasibility. In return,
such powerful chargers offer significantly shorter
charging times. Again, the performance of the built-in
on-board charger determines the charging capacity that
can ultimately be achieved.
INTELLIGENT CHARGING MANAGEMENT
Performance is one thing. It is at least as important to
use this power intelligently and safely. High-performance
electronics are responsible for this. The charging
management of the wall charging station communicates
with the vehicle‘s Battery Management System (BMS).
BMS are responsible for controlling and monitoring the
charging and discharging process. Their main task is to
ensure that each individual cell neither during charging
nor discharging falls below nor exceeds a State of
Charge (SoC) limit value defined for the application. The
SoC value describes the remaining available capacity of
a battery in relation to its nominal value.
ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY (EMC)
Today, high-performance electronics always means
high-clocked circuits. And these fast circuits always
carry the risk of excessive emissions of electromagnetic
interference signals, which must be reduced. This problem
can be overcome with EMC filters with high attenuation
and a clever circuit board layout - in the 1-phase
range usually even with discrete components.
SCHURTER has a wide range of chassis mount filters
for both 1-phase and 3-phase systems. Whether 1- or
2-stage filters are (must be) used depends on the
strength of the interference signals, which should be
measured in advance. For almost any interference signal
and any power range, the problem of electromagnetic
compatibility can be solved in a compact way.
with intelligent charging management
High-performance safety clip
SCHURTER CSO
3-phase EMC filters
SCHURTER FMAC NEO
PROTECT!
Last but not least – charging stations perform the lion‘s
share of their service unattended. Generously dimensioned
protection with high-quality passive components
(fuses, fuseholders) helps to prevent major damage
such as a fire in advance. An example of this would be
the CSO highperformance clip for 10.3 x 38mm fuses.
Due to the use of a special copper alloy, it is characterised
by a particularly high clamping force. This results
in minimal power dissipation, which is particularly
essential for applications with high currents. With a typical
contact resistance of ≤ 1 mΩ it is ideally suited for
use in e-mobility charging stations (AC and DC).
IATF 16949: EXPERIENCED PARTNER
SCHURTER has been certified according to IATF16949
for many years and serves a large number of customers
with fuses that have been tested according to AEC-Q200
for various applications (battery management, climate
control, engine-related electronics for diesel/petrol
engines, etc.). Millions upon millions of fuses for protection
against overcurrent and overtemperature are
in use worldwide. The close networking with international
automotive organizations and the industry itself
BOURNS
FULLY INTEGRATED
ISOMOV
HYBRID PROTECTOR
INTRODUCTION
Bourns is pleased to announce its
groundbreaking lineup of IsoMOV
hybrid protection components. By
combining the best features of the
breakthrough surge performance
EdgMOV technology with an integrated
Gas Discharge Tube (GDT)
isolation structure, the IsoMOV
protector offers high reliability and
long life including in certain harsh
environments.
The IsoMOV Hybrid Protector Series
is an upgrade to nearly any MOV
power application where premium
performance and/or space savings
are valued. The extended temperature
range, low leakage and superb
energy handling density are especially
advantageous to industrial and
other applications exposed to high
surges.
The IsoMOV device‘s unique and
graceful end-oflife failure mode
quickly and cleanly blows the line
fuse, never leaving equipment unprotected
and eliminating the need
for any indicator circuitry.
The IsoMOV protector family of
products includes three unique series
of devices; Model IsoM3, IsoM5
and IsoM8. With nominal surge
ratings of 3 kA, 5 kA and 8 kA, these
revolutionary new protectors offer
performance usually found in larger
traditional MOV devices.
UNIQUE CONSTRUCTION
The IsoMOV protector fully integrates
the classic GDT and MOV in a
symbiotic relationship, enhancing
reliability and performance. In this
configuration, the GDT blocks leakage
currents through the MOV that
would otherwise lead to premature
failure of the MOV device, while the
MOV prevents the follow-on current
(after a surge) that might damage
the GDT.
the GDT.
In fact, the surge ratings of IsoMOV
protectors are comparable to the
surge ratings of the next larger size
of conventional MOV devices. This
offers designers the flexibility of
choosing an IsoMOV protector that
is smaller than the MOV option or
choosing an IsoMOV protector of
the same size as the MOV option and
enhancing the surge capability of
their protection scheme.
