Dear coin enthusiasts,
You have probably already noticed that in this auction, we have a lot to offer. In your hands, you hold 3999 lots eagerly
awaiting your highest bids, and that carries great weight.
As usual, this year‘s auction begins with antiquities, starting with East Celtic tetradrachms (Lots 34-35), Sasanian dinars
(Lots 170-171), and select specimens of Roman emperors, such as a rare aureus of the first Roman Emperor Augustus
(Lot 274) or 1 ½ scripula of Constantine the Great (Lot 629).
Next, we present the long-awaited continuation of our South American collections: Bolivia (Lots 717-755), Brazil
(Lots 756-781), Ecuador (Lots 868-870), Colombia (Lots 1074-1079), and nearly 300 lots from Peru (Lots 1183-1453).
Among them, you will find partially overstruck coins from colonial times as well as specimens from the new republics.
Bidding soared to multiples of estimates earlier this spring.
Apart from other exceptional pieces from France, Russia, and Spain, we have the extremely rare 1851 Humbert
50 Dollars (Lot 1927) among the United States of America offerings. A numismatic journey through Poland awaits you,
featuring the taler of Sigismund III from 1628 (Lot 1461), 6 groschen with the title Stanislaus August from 1765
(Lot 1524), and newer pieces from the Republic to the city of Gdansk. The rich history also comes alive through
numerous medals.
Our cover this year features Helvetia, eagerly awaiting her new owner against the backdrop of the Alps (Lot 1595).
This exquisite specimen with the fabulous PCGS MS-66 grade bears the biblical edge inscription „Dominus Providebit“
(„The Lord will provide“). And before we have to rely on higher powers for a sacrificial lamb, we have made provisions
and assembled a wide selection of Lamb Ducats – from double ducats to 1/32 ducats (Lots 2426-2441).
From our own homeland, we also offer a wide range of items from the Old German States, the Imperial era, and the
Weimar Republic. This includes a Hamburg Goldbankportugaleser commemorating the reconstruction of St. Nicholas
Church (Lot 2327), a later strike from the Bavarian wedding (Lot 3274), and, from a more distant corner,
a 1916 T 15 Rupien from German East Africa (in superb condition, Lot 3917).
A pre-viewing of the lots is possible by appointment until November 17, 2023. If you have any questions, we are here
to assist you.
We wish you much enjoyment browsing through the catalog and success in your bidding!
Warm regards from the Störtebeker House in Hamburg,
Dr. Josef F. Fischer & Dr. Laura Thielen
PS: In this catalog, there is one lot that stands out, more or less. Nevertheless, it impresses with its low mintage and
proof-like condition. Can you find it? Hint: It doesn‘t make it easy for Roman legionnaires and tends to get lost in
pyramids.
PPS: Due to the extensive coin auction, the banknote auction has been postponed to expectedly the end of the year.
