explained
Your Students’ Union holds elections in order to
allow you to choose your student leaders for
the next academic year. There are seven fulltime
Sabbatical Trustees who will work on a fulltime
basis, taking a break from their studies or
immediately after graduation, and ten part-time
Campaign Officers who will work on a voluntary
basis alongside their studies. They are your voice
and act as your representatives in the SU, University,
and wider community, fighting for you on an
institutional, local and national level.
Candidates produce manifestos that contain the
ideas and principles of their campaigns. When
you’re reading these, ask yourself if they display
the priorities as well as the key creative and
communication skills that you would like to see in
someone who is representing you and your needs.

Why vote?
Simply put: As a student or postgraduate researcher at
Cardiff University you will be affected by the decisions made
by those elected. By voting, you have the opportunity to vote
for the things that you want developed and improved in both
the University and the Students’ Union.
Every single student at Cardiff University is entitled and
encouraged to vote in the Students’ Union elections. It doesn’t
matter if you are a home or international student, full-time or
part-time student, an undergraduate, postgraduate taught
student or a postgraduate researcher. Your vote matters.
As George Jean Nathan famously said: ‘Bad officials are
elected by good citizens who do not vote’.

Students’
Union President
The Students’ Union President leads the Sabbatical Trustee team and
the SU. They act as the key link to the University Vice-Chancellor, Pro-
Vice Chancellors, Council, and Senate, as well as the National Union
of Students and other key stakeholders.
The role of the President includes acting as the chair of the Board of
Directors and Trustees, along with being responsible for the financial
position and performance of the Students’ Union. This is a full-time,
paid role.

The VP Cymraeg will be responsible for representing Welsh

The role will also be responsible for leading the growth and
development of UMCC (the Welsh Students’ Union within Cardiff
Students’ Union) and promoting the community and culture of
Wales to all students.

representing and championing the voice of Heath Park students.
This will include being the primary contact for the Students’ Union at the
Heath Park Campus, maintaining relationships with partners including the
University Hospital Health Board, and supporting the development of the
Students’ Union offering at the Heath. This is a full-time, paid role.

The VP International Students (Education & Welfare) is responsible for
representing and championing the voice of International students.
This will involve maintaining relationships with key University stakeholders
including University staff and departments integral to international
students. The VP International Students (Education & Welfare) will also
be responsible for running and maintaining the International Students
Association. This is a full-time, paid role.

limited rights—a feeling shared by many international students. These initiatives will enhance support and
advocacy for students.

higher than Home students’, and huge expenses for visas and living.
• A Family Discount will reduce the pressure on students who come with
their siblings and other relatives! Other universities have already done it,
so why not here?

• Ignorance breeds intolerance. Let's make Uni a multicultural space
where diverse beliefs, cultures, and languages are celebrated.
• Working with cultural societies, Residence Lifers, and Wellbeing
Champions, I plan events to showcase cultures and encourage holiday

international student myself, I understand your challenges and I am dedicated to making a
difference for you by working in partnership with the university and form associations with the
Welsh government. You can trust me to represent you! ☺
Enhanced Support Services: From cultural and language adjustments to financial
hardships, I understand and I will work to expand support including financial assistance
through bursaries and trusts, and targeted employability support to prepare you for your future.
Regular Free/ Affordable Meals: Struggling with cost of living crisis? Count on me to
push for regular free meals to keep you fuelled, healthy and focused!
Accommodation & Housing: Securing suitable housing can be challenging especially

VP Sports
and Athletic
Union President
The VP Sports and AU President champions sport within the Union,
University, and local community. It’s their role to represent students
who play both competitive and participation sports to both the
University and the Union. They are also the key liaison Sabbatical
Trustee with the University Sports Department, as well as working with
the student-led sports clubs to assist them in their development.
Essentially, the VP Sports is here to promote health and fitness and to
inspire more students to play sport at Cardiff University. This is a fulltime,

Tackling Sexual Misconduct on our campus-
Ensure consent and bystander training is given to
all students and also conduct a prevalence
survey into sexual misconduct on campus.
Menstrual Justice- Hold monthly ‘menstruation
stations’ at the SU and Heath campus and
advocate for free reusable products for
students
