Elections
explained
Your Students’ Union holds elections in order to
allow you to choose your student leaders for
the next academic year. There are seven fulltime
Sabbatical Trustees who will work on a fulltime
basis, taking a break from their studies or
immediately after graduation, and ten part-time
Campaign Officers who will work on a voluntary
basis alongside their studies. They are your voice
and act as your representatives in the SU, University,
and wider community, fighting for you on an
institutional, local and national level.
Candidates produce manifestos that contain the
ideas and principles of their campaigns. When
you’re reading these, ask yourself if they display
the priorities as well as the key creative and
communication skills that you would like to see in
someone who is representing you and your needs.

Why vote?
Simply put: As a student or postgraduate researcher at
Cardiff University you will be affected by the decisions made
by those elected. By voting, you have the opportunity to vote
for the things that you want developed and improved in both
the University and the Students’ Union.
Every single student at Cardiff University is entitled and
encouraged to vote in the Students’ Union elections. It doesn’t
matter if you are a home or international student, full-time or
part-time student, an undergraduate, postgraduate taught
student or a postgraduate researcher. Your vote matters.
As George Jean Nathan famously said: ‘Bad officials are
elected by good citizens who do not vote’.
(Seven different positions available). These positions are
taken up from July 1st until June the following year. These
positions are full-time jobs so students have to take a year
out during their time in office, unless they are graduating the
same year.
Jake Enea
My name is Jake Enea. I’m running for SU president.
As a SU president candidate I believe it’s time to have a SU president who will
represent and engage all students.
1. Deliver a petition the Welsh Government demanding they consider putting
mandatory refunds equivalent to the amount of days missed due to strikes.
2. Work with Cardiff Nightclubs to ensure the safety of all Cardiff Students. I’ll propose
a policy which will introduce a ban for the rest of the academic year from all night
clubs if a student misbehaves. This will protect women and those student who go out
without the intent to cause trouble.
3. I’ll introduce a spiking awareness week at the SU and continue to work with South
Wales police.
4. I will run the SU fairly and neutrally. I will introduce guest speakers from a variety of
backgrounds and political ideologies . I will always encourage a fair and open debate.
Freedom of speech must a priority in any Russel Group University.
5. I will introduce cheaper spirts at Y plas and I will work with the Students Union to
introduce a Friday Night at Y plas for students to enjoy.
I’m a fresh face who has served under the student senate in the last few months. I can
see that the SU needs a fresh start in order to thrive.
As the potential Athletic Union President, I am passionate about creating a
vibrant and inclusive athletic community for all students. As an active
member of the athletic community myself, I understand the importance of
creating a space where everyone feels valued and supported, no matter
My main focus as president will be to increase student involvement and
engagement within the athletic community. This can be achieved by offering
Trystan Gwennap
Hi! I’m Trystan a second year International Relations and Politics student. I’m running
to be your next Ethical and Environmental officer. I’m passionate about the University
being sustainable on both an individual level and as an entity; believing more can be
done to implement systems which facilitate the individual. Alongside the need for
more specific environmental policies to be implemented by the University.
Previously, I’ve advocated for sustainability as a member of my sixth forms ECO Club
then subsequently been the President of the Sustainable Fashion Society. Separately, I
have been on NCS’s National Youth Board, representing a wide range of individuals;
now I’m the Small Events Co-ordinator for Give It A Go.
If elected, I would focus on:
• The excess consumption of costumes surrounding club socials. I will advocate
for the implementation of a circular borrowing system, allowing for individuals to
donate old costumes from prior socials and then borrow costumes for their next.
• The decarbonisation and reduction of food waste I will lobby for the University
to be more specific when talking about their support of food charities asking for
specified action within their policies. I will spread awareness of methods students can
use to combat food waste, whilst striving to create connections between local food
producers and the Students Union allowing for movement towards the
decarbonisation of food, through means such as a student-led food co-op.
• I would advocate for motions moving towards net-zero carbon emissions by
2030, supporting previous motions whilst supporting future, more ambitious motions.

Divyabharathy Udhayasoorian
Hello , myself divyabharathy pursuing full-time master in msc clinical
optometry at Cardiff University. I am a international student. I would like to
promote positive attitudes from students and families towards education to
ensure students benefit fully from the opportunities available to them. To
provide intervention strategies to students who experience barriers to their
learning. Also I will support to promote high attendance and other positive
behaviours for learning. I will support and serves as the primary advisor to
international students including accomodation, information reg funding,
scholarship and employment. Thank you so much.

If elected I will campaign on the following items:
An improved support system for international students facing
difficulties with the visa process.
Support on how to navigate through the cost of living crisis as
an international student and how to manage finances while
living in a different country.
Improved assistance for those struggling to integrate and make
new friends while being an international student.
Culture Cwtch - An incredible event that I will work hard to
ensure becomes a staple of the Cardiff international
community. I will work to improve the capacity of the Culture
Cwtch as well as encouraging even more participation from
different cultural societies.
Regular events and opportunities that will allow international
students to share aspects of their own culture and learn more
about other cultures.
VOTE MATILDA FOR LGBTQ+ OFFICER
I believe that a few changes could create a better environment for all
LGBTQ+ people in Cardiff University.
If elected, I’d advocate for queer people in all university policy
decisions.
The three main changes I’d like to bring about:
EVENTS
WELFARE
1 - Create a queer club night at the Students Union.
Although the Students Union is intended for all students, many
LGBTQ+ students feel a lack of representation in SU nights out.
I’d create a brand new club night, separate from Yolo and Juice,
aimed at LGBTQ+ students.
Hosted by queer performers or djs. It would take place a twice a
semester.
2 - Improved access to welfare services.
Many LGBTQ+ students face challenges with their mental
health and well-being.
I’d improve access to counselling and drop in services for all
students.
I’d also run a series of well-being initiatives, such as craft
afternoons and walks, including specific sessions for LGBTQ+
students.
EDUCATION
3- Improve representation of LGBTQ+ issues and voices in the
curriculum.
Queer people face different challenges, and have different
health outcomes to straight people. I’d push for more LGBTQ+
education in healthcare courses to account for this.
I’d also push for better representation of historical queer
figures in humanities courses.
Let’s push the gay agenda
Any questions, I’d love to chat!
Hi, I'm Rebecca and I am running for Mental Health Officer,
Rebecca Hardy
I have thoroughly enjoyed being CURRENT MENTAL HEALTH OFFICER this year and
would love to continue.
As students, we are constantly under pressure with assignments, keeping a social life
and maintaining a healthy mind and that's why I propose the following manifesto:
Wellbeing events:
I want to run events every
month to give students a
space to relax, unwind and
enjoy some “me” time.
Drop in sessions:
To offer students the chance
to talk and to suggest the
changes they want to see.
Extenuating
Circumstances:
Lobby the university to
provide check ins when
declarations are made
by students who are
struggling.
Students with
Disabilities:
Work with the University
to provide these
students with the
support that they are
entitled to by DSA.
Student Led Services:
I want to raise awareness
and ensure students make
use of these student run
services.
Counselling services:
I will work to improve wait
times and lift the cap on the
amount of sessions.
We face so many difficulties as students, so let’s work together to make our
mental health better.
For Better Mental Health Vote 4BeccaMentalHealth
What have I done this year:
• Brought you The Big Blues Buster, a day full of
wellbeing activities.
• Worked with MDB Charity to raise awareness of safe
spaces in Cardiff.
• Comprised an amazing team in the Mental Health
Association.
What I am still working on:
• Bringing you more wellbeing events.
• Planning a campaign for better extenuating
circumstances procedures.
• Working with Mental Health services to offer you more
opportunities to get help.

Finnerty Templeman
Hi, my name is Finnerty and I am an undergraduate student in SHARE. I am
also a new mum to my daughter, Lyla. I am running for Student Parent and
Carers officers because I want to ensure we feel as supported as possible
and can gain just as much from our university experience as our peers.
In this role, I will do my best to:
• Make high-quality online resources a standard for modules where
possible. We should never feel as though we must choose between our
studies and our families and distance learning during the pandemic proved
it is possible to access work without always needing to be face-to-face, by
ensuring that material is available online lecturers can ensure that we are
not at a disadvantage when our family commitments must take priority
• Establish a parents and carers society/support group, arrange meet-ups to
interact with other people in a similar position and organise fun activities
both for our children and ourselves
• Make sufficient welfare support available from people with specific
knowledge relevant to the challenges parents and carers may face
Not all parents and carers are the same, we have diverse backgrounds and
circumstances, and I would love the opportunity to help everyone by
listening to your feedback and doing my best to have our voices heard by
the necessary people to implement the changes that people really need.

DAISY TIPPING
WOMENS OFFICER
Hi! I’m Daisy, a passionate and enthusiastic
History and Politics student who has always
had a hands-on, dedicated approach to
intersectional feminism.
Through learning and listening to all students I am confident I will be
able to understand and represent the issues of all women at this
university.
Cardiff is in general, liberal and progressive – many would feel that
there are no issues to be raised or fixed, at least this is what I have
heard. Indeed, the Student Union’s period dignity campaign or the
women-specific support groups suggest this. However, Cardiff
University also had 561 sexual misconduct cases across the 2017-
2020 period, with only 18 students reprimanded. I know from
personal experience, that of my friends and fellow students, that
culture hasn’t changed, and that Cardiff still has more work to do.
I have previous experience working within the Students Union being
the Chair of the SHARE student representatives in which I have been
supporting numerous women-related issues such as lack of or
restricted breastfeeding spaces in John Percival, as well as previous
work supporting women’s campaigns in my previous role as a Youth
Advisor for my local council in which we provided campaigns around
period dignity, street harassment and supporting girls through
schools.
I feel I would be the perfect person to fill the Women’s officer role,
being able to successfully coordinate with the Student’s Union and
University, to lobby for student-specific issues.
