Missiles 'may protect Olympics'<br />

(belfasttelegraph) Surface-to-air missiles could be used to protect the<br />
skies over London during the Olympics, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has<br />
said.<br />
He insisted that "all necessary measures" will be taken to ensure security,<br />
telling the Commons "appropriate ground-to-air defences" could be in place<br />
if that was recommended by the military.<br />

RAF veteran says British government covered up scale of nuclear tests<br />

(belfasttelegraph) A former RAF navigator has claimed the size of a nuclear<br />
bomb detonated during tests in the 1950s could have been three times bigger<br />
than the Government officially stated, in evidence which could that prove<br />
crucial for more than 1,000 service veterans suing the Ministry of Defence<br />
(MoD) for upwards of £100m.<br />
Flight Lieutenant Joseph Pasquini, who served in the RAF's 76 Squadron,<br />
took measurements during the UK's biggest nuclear test blast at Christmas<br />
Island in the Pacific on 28 April, 1958 – known as Grapple Y.<br />

No Army cuts expected - MoD chief<br />

(belfasttelegraph) The Chief of the Defence Staff has declared he is<br />
"pretty confident" the Army could cut its numbers by a fifth without any<br />
new redundancies.<br />
General Sir David Richards moved to reassure soldiers fearing for their<br />
jobs amid reports that 16,500 personnel faced the axe, with 2,500 injured<br />
troops, including 350 who had lost limbs, vulnerable to redundancy.<br />
