The discovery of the year
An important and unrecorded French system
cane from the period around 1750 with a container
knob on its long real malacca with two
steps and 5 1/4 in. long bronze ferrule. The 3 1/2 in.
high bronze fire gilt knob is hand chased with
two beautiful herons among rich baroque decoration
and engraved monogram on the top.
Its upper part unscrews to show nine fine and
different utensils each inserted in its own
compartment: A pair of steel scissors, a folding
red gold knife with steel blade, a red gold
spoon, a red gold twizer with an ear cleaner, a
six sided opening red gold tube which can be
fitted with a steel blade or a twin pointed steel
fork, a graduated red gold protractor and an
ivory panel. The lower part of the knob also
unscrews to show a 7 1/2 in. deep cylindrical
metal container concealed in the malacca. The
cane in excellent original condition shows decorative
age on all its parts and has a beautiful
patina. Regarding the outstanding quality of
the fittings, one might easily speculate a medical
purpose for this piece. Overall length 42 in.
