On a more entertaining note, a wedding at St. Martin’s,
on Scarborough’s South Cliff (a rather sedate part of the
town) caused some amusement. The church has no onsite
parking, the verger was on holiday and no-one knew
where to find the cones used to reserve the few precious
feet of space in front of the church.
The curate and the flower arrangers (who else?) rigged
up a Heath Robinson affair only to find later that the
area they had tried to reserve was occupied by a very
large tractor. On closer inspection, the tractor was found
to be decorated with white ribbons. It was the
bridegroom’s transport to the church. Not quite South
Cliff.
The bride was forty minutes late, the organist was
exhausted after playing non-stop for an hour and the
numerous children present were hyper-active rather
than just restless. The bride’s mother’s shoes were
obviously extremely uncomfortable but at least the
dahlias in the pew end decorations survived and
everyone was said to have had a very happy day.
