10th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition July 05 - 09, 2017 Wernigerode, Germany Singing in the colourful city in the Harz mountain range Since 1999 the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition is a crowd puller for choirs and music ensembles from all over the world. The colorful city in the Harz mountain range attracts visitors with its unique charm of medieval architecture and moreover with its musical characteristics: Three renowned German choirs come from this small town. Furthermore this competition, named after Johannes Brahms, puts a musical focus on this German composer and the German romantics of the 19th century. Numerous advanced trainings offer interested choirs outstanding possibilities of mutual learning and professional training e.g. with evaluation performances and individual coaching. Apart from pedagogical offers further concerts will take place downtown and in the surroundings of Wernigerode. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival & Competition the city of Wernigerode and INTERKULTUR will come up with some surprises, which will add to the program's established highlights such as the Choir Parade, Charity Concert and the Closing Concert. http://wernigerode.interkultur.com

Since 1999 the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition is a crowd puller for choirs and music ensembles from all over the world. The colorful city in the Harz mountain range attracts visitors with its unique charm of medieval architecture and moreover with its musical characteristics: Three renowned German choirs come from this small town. Furthermore this competition, named after Johannes Brahms, puts a musical focus on this German composer and the German romantics of the 19th century.

Numerous advanced trainings offer interested choirs outstanding possibilities of mutual learning and professional training e.g. with evaluation performances and individual coaching.

Locations of Festivals and Competitions<br />

To date, INTERKULTUR events have taken place in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France,<br />

Germany, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Malaysia, Malta, People’s Republic<br />

of China, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, USA and Vietnam.<br />

In <strong>2017</strong> and 2018 INTERKULTUR is present also in Croatia, Great Britain, Japan, Sri Lanka,<br />

and South Africa for the first time.<br />

The Participants<br />

In total, roughly 8.600 choirs with roughly 378.000 active singers from 103 countries have<br />

taken part in the INTERKULTUR competitions to date. An interesting note is that more than<br />

half of the participants have been children and youth up to 27 years of age and 67% of the<br />

participating choirs are returning ensembles looking forward to new destinations and new<br />

choral challenges.<br />

Means of Support<br />

In accordance with its statutes, INTERKULTUR supports the following activities:<br />

• International music festivals and choir competitions whose goal is to bring together choirs<br />

from different regions of the world and encourage international collaboration through<br />

mutual respect, as well as to contribute to cultural exchange and understanding among<br />

nations<br />

• Children and youth choirs even from financially challenged countries<br />

• Non-professional choirs that focus on the growth of youth development<br />

• Young, talented choirmasters, young musicians and singers through the support of scholarship<br />

awards<br />

• Specific sponsorship opportunities<br />

European Culture Award<br />

INTERKULTUR was awarded the 2006 and 2016 European Culture Award, by former German<br />

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hans Dietrich Genscher and presented by KulturForum Europa, for<br />

its activities on behalf of understanding between peoples and furtherance of common European<br />

thinking in the field of culture.<br />
