Editor’s Corner
Bob Jacobson, SVR Editor
New drifter layout editor!
Bob Cannon has stepped forward and volunteered to do our drifter layouts replacing Kyle Gong starting with the January issue. Bob has
been a member of SVR for 14 years and 356CAR newsletter editor for 10 years including doing layouts the past 6 years. He is probably
best known for his prize winning 356 restorations and his great back yard club dinners. He has co-chaired a 356 West Coast Holiday and
numerous regional events. Bob’s love of Porsches goes back many years and now that he is retired from medical practice he is willing to
share his experiences and talents with us on the Drifter and the 356CAR. After talking with him and hearing his ideas I know we are going
to see many changes and improvements in coming issues of the newsletter.
Welcome Bob!
PDK (Pretty Darn Kwik)
by Rik Larson, SVR Ralley
Some general observations and ramblings about things going on.
• The photo used for the cover of the October DRIFTER
appeared to have some vertical streaks in the background.
We originally thought there was a problem with the
printing, then we checked the original photograph (by
Collin Fat) and saw that the streaks were present also (as
well as in other photographs of that same background). We
then remembered that the photograph was taken just before
we went to the final banquet at the Parade on Saturday.
And it had rained that afternoon. Even though the photo
was taken in the covered area right at the front door of the
Little America Hotel, the sign was in area that was exposed
to some of the rain (probably run off from the roof). Case
solved.
• The 2nd annual Tech Tactics West event by PCA has been
announced. It will be held at the PCNA (Porsche Cars
North America) Training facility in Ontario, CA. Tech
Tactics is dedicated to all things Porsche related to Tech.
You can attend one or both days. Cost is $50 per day and
includes breakfast and lunch. There is a limit of 125 people
per day. Dates are December 1st and 2nd. Registration is
available at pca.motorsportreg.com
• The SVR DE scheduled for December 21st, has been
cancelled.
vepasales@gmail.com – www.4vepa.com
• A couple of events of note in 2013. The ALMS (American
Le Mans Series) race at Laguna Seca will be held May
16th to May 18th. And the Monterey Motorsports
Reunion (the old Historics) is scheduled for August 16th
to 19th. The featured marque is the Chevrolet Corvette.
• The annual Christmas Tree decorating event held at the
California Auto Museum has just been added to our
calendar. It will be held the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
The decorating starts around 2 pm and there is a potluck
that begins at 4 pm. The club has two trees to decorate.
Contact Kim Nelson for information as to what to bring
to the potluck (typical first letter of your last name
determines). Kim can be reached at knelson356@gmail.
com or 916.337.7716
• Pete Stout will become the new Editor of Porsche
Panorama effective January 2013. You may remember
Pete when he was the guest speaker at our Christmas
Party in 2009 at Niello Porsche. He brought with him
a 2011 Boxster Spyder that was one of thirteen in the
country at the time for the press to evaluate. The car was
featured on the cover of January 2010 issue of the drifter.
Pete comes to PCA from Excellence Magazine where
he was the Editor-in-Chief for the past 14 years. Expect
some changes next year as it relates as to how PCA will
be communicating with its membership.
SVR Recognition Awards
By Kirk Bradford, SVR Treasurer
Recognizing that the 50th Anniversary of SVR was a momentous occasion, the board felt that it would be appropriate to give
special recognition to charter members and long-time supporters of our wonderful club.
At our 50th Anniversary celebration recently held at Deaver Winery, the plan was to present special recognition awards to
charter members and long-time supporters who were in attendance.
As many attendees know, the evening’s program ran later than planned, and it was getting very dark by the time the
recognition awards were presented. Many would-be recipients had already left the event and were not able to receive their
awards.
As a “plan-B”, the awards will be presented throughout the remainder of the year, and new recipients will be acknowledged in
future issues of the Drifter.
Four awards were presented at the Deaver event,
and the recipients were charter members Brad
& Judy Hawkes, and John and Betty Meunier.
In addition, longtime supporter/members Rik
& Lettie Larson and Mike & Emily Willis were
presented awards.
Subsequent to the Deaver event, a recognition
award was presented to long-time members
Larry & Pat Wilson. Also, an award was
presented to our valued supporter and sponsor,
Niello Porsche.
On behalf of the board, I would like to extend
a heartfelt thank you to all of the Recognition
Award recipients.
NEW BUSiNESS
proposal by email and agreed on the 17 ounce glass. Bob Peake made
a motion to approve the purchase of 216 17-ounce wine glasses (18
boxes of 12) for approximately $800 as well as 1 bottle of wine per 4
to locate willing candidates for president. The search continues! Please
contact the committee with any nominations.
and new members are introduced, and upcoming events are discussed.
John Murphy seconded. The motion was unanimously approved.
date. Several ideas were discussed for software which could meet the
needs of publishing the Drifter. Bob Jacobson moved to recognize that
Rik Larson will investigate publishing software options for the Drifter
and report back to the board. The motion was unanimously approved.
Autocross Budget: In light of the excellent autocross season to date,
Bob Peake made a motion to subsidize the lunch fee for all drivers at
Meeting adjourned: 9:59 PM Mountain Daylight Time (MDT)
Next meeting:
RPM Wednesday, November 20th, 2012 at 7:00 PM PDT
Note from the Secretary: It is a long standing tradition to end the board
meeting at a time which corresponds to a Porsche model number. In
order to ensure this important tradition continues, great liberty is taken
with the time zone notation. Hence the use of Mountain Time this
month, because 8:59 is not a Porsche model number!
Candidate Statement - President
Steve Barker
I joined SVR upon purchasing my first Porsche in March of 2011 thinking it might be a good way of meeting a group of people
that shared their love for their car and to take part in touring N. California. I was nominated for VP and accepted the role for 2012.
After my first year as VP I have really enjoyed the opportunities this club has provided through its events and was proud to be able to
contribute in organizing club activities and maintain the calendar while ensuring that events were covered by insurance.
As President, I believe the board should represent the club members in its decisions and direction. My goal is to reflect the member’s
interests as President and continue to participate in as many events as possible.
I respectfully submit my candidate statement for the 2013 position of SVR President.
Steve Barker
Candidate Statement - Vice President
Rik Larson
Thank you to whoever nominated me at the October Dinner (and seconded). Hopefully the outgoing Vice President will provide me
with the support I will need in 2013. Be sure and vote.
Respectfully,
Rik Larson
Candidate Statement - Treasurer
Kirk Bradford
I have been your treasurer since the beginning of 2012, and would like to continue to serve in the same capacity for 2013. Turning
on the way back machine, I did previously serve as treasurer (in the 80’s?). Believe it or not, back then accounting entries were made
manually on a 24 column ledger sheet with a pencil. The club’s current accounting software is QuickBooks, which has certainly made
the accounting portion of the job much easier.
I’ve been a member since 1973, and have also served in other board positions, including President. I really enjoy working with the
board and all other members as we move forward with new goals and challenges. In keeping with my strong desire to further serve our
wonderful club, I ask that you vote for me as treasurer for 2013.
Thank you for your consideration.
Kirk Bradford
Candidate Statement - Membership Director
Yvonne “Cookie” Anderson
In the past I have held the office of Social Director and President for two terms. I have also been your Goodie Store chairperson for the
past 4 years. For those that know me, know that I will do a good job. I hope you trust in me to follow the Membership responsibilities
and give me your vote.
Respectfully,
Yvonne “Cookie” Anderson
Candidate Statement - Social Director
Eduardo Ortega Jr.
Hello. I joined the Sacramento Valley Region on September of 2010. My national PCA Anniversary date is September 2007. As an
active new member in SVR I quickly started participating in club events. At the New Member Tour on September of 2011 it was
announced that Board elections were coming up, and the club was looking for volunteers to serve on the Board. Later on I was elected
as your Social Director for 2012.
When it comes to Club Dinners and Tours, I have worked this year with both seasoned members and new members. To all of them,
I have provided my best efforts to get their budget proposals approved timely and to coordinate event promotion through the SVR
Website, email Blasts, and in the Drifter. Not a single club dinner nor tour has been cancelled this year. The members’ participation has
been constant.
I ask you to re-elect me for the Social Director position for 2013. I will work closely with you to get your Club Dinner or Tour
approved and get it promoted. I will look together with all of you for new venues and activities, especially for new members, I will be
there for you helping you with your event. Finally, please come to the Planning Meeting in January where we can kick off the 2013
social events calendar with a blast!!
Thanks for your consideration.
Eduardo Ortega Jr.
Candidate Statement - Secretary
Matt Deter
I joined PCA in 2003 after purchasing my first (and so far only) Porsche. I expected to have lots of fun driving the car, but I never
expected to find such a great group of people to share that experience with. It didn’t take long before I became deeply involved in
the club, first serving as Autocross Chairman and then Competition Director. In 2012 with your support, I returned to the board as
Secretary. I would like to continue for another year and respectfully submit my candidate statement for the 2013 position of SVR
Secretary. Thank you for your support.
Matt Deter
Candidate Statement - Competition and Safety Director
Collin Fat
I have been an active member of the Porsche Club Sacramento Valley Region since 2007. As an avid autocrosser and track enthusiast I
have also participated in the many other activities the club plans annually such as rallies, concours, tours and dinner gatherings.
I currently drive a 2003 996 Turbo.
Married to wife Elaine for 30 plus years with two grown children, Natalie (28) and Bryan (23).
As your Competition and Safety Director, I can bring my organizational and years of business experience to help: 1) improve
participation in our events, with a goal of increasing new member participation 2) to provide effective marketing for our events , and 3)
increase awareness of our competition events through our award winning website. As a passionate Porsche enthusiast I hope to continue
the great job done by my predecessors, Bop Peake and Matt Deter to build our competition events into the best in our region.
My past board experience is quite varied and locally I served six years on the board of the Roseville Chamber of Commerce with the last
year as president. I currently serve on the board of the Sacramento Restaurant Association as vice president. Other boards that I have
participated in include the Asian Pacific Business Association, and San Diego Community College Foundation.
Charity Auction Successful Bidder
by Herb Hoover
“Wow,” I exclaimed as Jan and I were looking over the gifts on display at our annual charity auction, “this we’ve gotta have.”
It was a gourmet French dinner offered by Bistro McDade. This bistro is a creation of Jim and Sheila McDade and Jim’s sister Nancy.
Anybody who has ever enjoyed an evening with the McDades at their lovely home knows what that’s going to be like. Jim and Sheila
are award winning chefs and they both love to cook so you can be assured of a wonderful evening. Andy and Dianna Leight went
in with us and we bid $300 and won a hard fought bidding war with Susan Duvall-Serota. Susan looked so disappointed after the
bidding ended the McDades generously offered another evening at their bistro and this time Susan won, so everybody went home
happy.
Bistro McDade was decorated in the French manner; (they are red, white, and blue too,) and we were instantly transported to Le
Moulin Rouge where we were treated to an evening of French music. Some of the artists who appeared were Chas. Aznavour,
Josephine Baker, Jacques Brel, Maurice Chevalier, Daniele Darrieux, and of course, the Little Sparrow, Edith Piaf. In fact, at the
group’s request Piaf graciously sang her signature song, La Vi en Rose receiving a standing ovation and treating us to a number of
encores.
OK, now get ready to drool; check out the menu:
First, Marinated Prawns with Champagne Beurre Blanc sauce, served on the most beautiful patio you can imagine. Wine too, of
course.
Then we went inside to a beautifully decorated dining room. The centerpiece on the table was a tall Eiffel Tower covered with candles
which was almost as spectacular as the second course which was Creme of Tomato Soup with Puff Pastry Crust. Believe me, this soup
never saw a Campbell’s can; it was made from scratch with heirloom tomatoes. Wine too, of course.
The main course was Boeuf Parisienne (filet roast) with Gratin Savoyard ( scalloped potatoes) and Broccolini with toasted almonds.
Wine too of course.
The finale, a delicious desert consisting of French Apple Croustade (French Apple Pie). Wine too, of course!!
Bistro McDade doesn’t miss the details either. For example each napkin holder was a replica of something French. Mine was an Eiffel
Tower and oh yes, we each got a wine bottle stopper in the form of an Eiffel tower.
A fabulous four hours spent with GOOD friends, great conversation, awesome food, and, wine too, of course.
We hope the Bistro will do this again, and soon, please!!!!!
September New Member Tour
by Lee Deter, New Member Group
Saturday, September 8 dawned clear and balmy. Arriving at the gathering location in El Dorado Hills 15 minutes before the appointed
time of 8 a.m., I was surprised and pleased to find 3 New Member cars with their drivers and partners waiting for me. A good omen
for an enjoyable tour up through the lower foothills to Georgetown and beyond to Camino.
I had planned to conduct the drivers meeting and get the first group out by 8:30 am. Soon all 27 registered New Members with 18
cars arrived for the tour, a new record. During the last 5 years that I have been organizing the new Member Tours, some New Members
have not been able to go after registering and were unable to notify me. Three old members, including three Board Members also
joined Tour Co-Chair Rich Walker and me for a tour total of 23 cars and 32 members and associates.
By 8:25 a.m. two tour groups had been formed and Group 1 departed, followed a few minutes later by Group 2. The route was up
Salmon Falls Road, south via State Route (SR) 49 to Marshall Grade Road, to a planned rest stop in Georgetown. Some of you may
recall that the 2nd half of Marshall Grade Road is also the route of the Georgetown Hill Climb of the 1950s.
Arriving in Georgetown we discovered the village streets and parking spaces were closed for a foothills car show. No rest stop, so
after regrouping Group 1, led by yours truly, we left Georgetown with all prudent haste to the 2nd planned rest stop at Stumpy
Meadows Reservoir. All good, or so I thought, until I discovered the group was short 7 cars. For whatever reason, the 5th car in
line had forgotten to wait for the car behind and Group 1 had split to become 2 groups for the rest of the tour. Radio and cell phone
communication in the central foothills is ZIP. In a few minutes the original Group 2 arrived and was merged with the Group 1 cars
that had stopped at Stumpy Meadows. Thinking one of the missing 7 cars had encountered mechanical trouble, or worse, I went back
toward Georgetown to find a ridge with enough cell reception to contact the back door of Group 1, now the leader of the 3rd group.
Upon doing so, I learned what had happened.
By now everyone was going south on Ice House road toward US-50 and Camino. Our destination was Jack Russell Brewery and
Winery on Larsen Road just outside Camino. I arrived there at 11:45 a.m. to find the so called lost Group 3 had also just arrived
there. The original Group 2 with the first 5 cars of group 1 was not there! They were expected to be immediately behind the 7 cars
that had separated from Group 1. Turned out they had taken Cable Road out of Camino, not Larsen Road. Not sure how they found
Jack Russell, but they did about noon. The Tour was officially over.
Rich Walker, assisted by Jim Kinnicutt, set up a deli lunch with chips and soda for the Tour members. Our attending SVR Board
Members, Steve Barker, Vice President; Matt Deter, Secretary; and Eduardo Ortega, Social Director; were introduced. Their remarks
were appropriate (read brief). Matt Deter, pinch hitting for Bob Peake, Competition Director, discussed the Auto Cross and Drivers
Education Programs. The weather was wonderful, the group attentive, and the first tour for several of the New Members. Everyone
seemed to enjoy themselves, I know I did. Kudos to Rich Walker for catering the lunch at cost.
SVR’s 50th Anniversary at
Deaver Winery
by Kirk Bradford, SVR Treasurer
Photos by Collin Fat, ira McKee, Steven Barker
It seems like yesterday that we were celebrating the 25th
anniversary of SVR, but you know how the saying goes; time
flies when you are having fun. And time really flies when you are
having fun in your Porsche!
When the board was considering when and how to celebrate
our region’s 50th, several ideas were offered up and discussed.
PCA National’s Region Focus had quite an extensive review
of the regions’ different approaches over the years. And most
importantly, the one point that rang true was not to be afraid of
trying something different!
With the insight provided by Region Focus, the board decided to
integrate the 50th celebration with our (very successful) annual
Deaver tour, wine tasting and dinner event. With Ron and Bente
Riley already on board to repeat the event in 2012, I volunteered
to work on the “anniversary” part of the event.
Early on, Cookie Anderson, Jerry Cupler, Mike & Emily Willis
volunteered to help with the planning and execution of the event.
Soon thereafter, Jim and Sheila McDade volunteered to lead the
“Tour” part of the event. And Linda (Bradford) volunteered to do
the table decorations.
At our initial meeting, the group came up with a list of things that
needed to be done in advance of the event. In the months that
followed, every detail was considered and addressed, and the end
result exceeded all of our wildest dreams.
Charter members along with long-time supporters of our club
were located, and personalized invitations were mailed to them.
Attendance estimates were “aggressive”, being raised to 150, which
was well above last year’s Deaver event. But as it turned out,
we were totally wrong! Ultimately, we ended up with over 240
attendees, making the anniversary event one of the best attended
SVR events of all time!
We were lucky to have several charter members attend our event.
Those included Read Buckman, Hal and Gail Fandl, Brad and
Judy Hawkes, Bill and Judy Maddock, John and Betty Meunier
and Gary Ogg. We are very appreciative of their attending our
special event.
Also attending were longtime supporters of our club, Wyn &
Linda Robertson (coming from Oregon) and Dwight Mitchell
(coming from Florida!). Another longtime supporter of our club,
Niello Porsche, was represented by Rob Pane and Dustin Aydt.
Past PCA National President Kurt Gibson and his wife Angie
joined us, as they “detoured” from an extended stay in Monterey.
As we found out at breakfast the next morning, Kurt and Angie
are planning on relocating from Missouri to Monterey sometime
very soon.
Thanks to Cookie’s efforts, numerous volunteers were lined up
(many came forward even before being asked). Set-up started
Saturday morning and by mid-afternoon we were pretty much
ready to go.
Anxious attendees started showing up as early as 3:30 PM, but
we were ready. Deaver’s tasting-room set up a large tasting area
outside under a tent, and they were going strong from the get-go.
Cookie and her volunteers started registering people as they
arrived, and they also were doing brisk business selling Goodie
Store items.
Mike Willis volunteered to manage parking. Mike enlisted the
help of Kent Brandon Ron Reagan and between the three of
them, they guided over 75 cars to parking spaces on the grounds,
including along a levee adjacent to Deaver’s “Grand Pond”. What
a sight to see all of those Porsches in a row!
Meanwhile at the tour, Jim and Sheila were keeping us advised on
how many more cars were going to show up as part of their tour.
I think it ended up being 25 cars, which challenged our “parking
lot attendants” Mike and Kent by the time the tour arrived at
Deaver. The tour group arrived a little later than planned. It
seems that they got stuck behind an old pick-up truck hauling
firewood. The truck was doing 15 MPH (in a 55 MPH zone),
totally oblivious to the long line of Porsches behind it. Some tour
participants came upon a slow-moving Prius, and it wasn’t even
hauling firewood!
The band started playing at 4:30, and very quickly the festive
mood turned even more festive. As more people started arriving,
it became clear that we were in for a wonderful event.
Ron was busy working on last minute “logistics”, as Mike Willis
had indicated early in the planning that we would need more than
two serving lines. More volunteers at the ready, four serving lines
were set up. And as soon as the prime rib started to be delivered
to the carving stations, the lines started forming!
Attendees enjoyed a fantastic dinner, consisting of smoked Prime
Rib, Cowboy Potatoes, salad, sourdough biscuits, cobbler, fried
pies and fresh Sloughhouse corn (Ron & Bente picked up the
corn on the way up that morning). Ron & Bente bought all of
the food (including 200+ pounds of prime rib) in advance of the
event. If that wasn’t enough, Bente pre-cooked (and froze) all of
the biscuits and pies for weeks before the event.
Hindsight being 20/20, we should have started the program an
hour earlier with such a full agenda. Recognition was given to
the team members, Ron, Bente, Mike, Emily, Cookie, Jerry, Jim,
Sheila, Kirk and Linda. We gave a big “Thank You” to Leonard
Sanders and his crew for the great job they did as our personal
cooks! Also, for the third year, the Shank Brothers provided us
with their unique Bluegrass music which has become synonymous
with our annual Deaver event.
Kurt Gibson (past national president) and Sharon Neidel (zone
7 representative) came forward to make a special presentation
to Frederick Rauch, SVR’s president. PCA National had created
a special book covering the history of SVR’s 50 years, and Kurt
and Sharon presented the book and a certificate to Frederick who
accepted them on behalf of our club.
We had 15 past SVR presidents in attendance, representing
28 years’ worth of office. Also, as we have done at our CRAB
events, we had everyone stand up for a stretch. Then we asked
that people who had been members for 5 years or less sit down.
Then 10 years or less; then 15; and on and on. We got to 50 years
and I thought that I was done, but Larry and Pat Wilson were
still standing! They joined PCA in 1961, “way” before SVR was
founded!
Recognition awards were given to charter members Brad & Judy
Hawkes and John and Betty Meunier, but unfortunately, by the
time this part of the program rolled around, the other charter
members had already left! We will get their awards to them.
Also, recognition awards were presented to longtime membersupporters
Rik and Lettie Larson and Mike and Emily Willis.
Other member-supporters will be presented recognition awards as
we finish out the year.
As the sun had been long gone, the program ended and that
concluded our great event. Post-event clean-up went very quickly,
thanks to the many volunteers who stayed to help us out. As
we spent a few final moments assessing how the event went, we
were all very satisfied that everyone had a great time. Hard work
completed, it was finally time for all of us to head home to get
some well-deserved rest.
On behalf of the “50th Anniversary at Deaver” event committee,
I want to express a sincere Thank You to all who volunteered and
helped us pull off one of our best events ever! Without your help,
we simply would not have been able to do the event.
