Editor’s Corner
Bob Jacobson, drifter Editor
editor@svr-pca.org
I want to thank President Frederick for anointing me the editor of The Drifter. I am honored to be in such a distinguished group of editors, some of whom
have received national awards for this newsletter in the past years.
Are you aware that The Drifter stopped publishing for two months earlier this year due to lack of support and interest by the SVR Board and general
membership. The fact that no one called about the absence of the newsletter made their position even more evident.
As a thirty year member of SVR I became very frustrated over the lack of a publication and had a meeting with Kyle Gong and Rik Larson to try to breathe
some life into this important newsletter. As a result of the meeting the job of editor was split three ways, with Kyle agreeing to publish a few months more if
Rik and I could cut down his time commitment to this on-going task. Publishing the newsletter with a team of three members makes is easier now, but also
paves the way for future members to volunteer for a less daunting task.
So, without any editing experience, I am now the editor of your newsletter, The Drifter. One of my first goals is to add personal local stories of cars and people
to the newsletter to make it more interesting and meaningful for all members. The standard informative sections, Calendar of Events, SVR Board Minutes,
Goodie Store and Classifieds will remain the same. The positive support from club members and the board has been outstanding with ideas, articles, photos
and financial support for the coming Anniversary issue from the Board. I believe with membership exceeding six hundred there must be a least that many
people and car stories to be told (see this month’s cover and story).
With a minor amount of arm-twisting and cajoling, I have organized a staff of three photographers, two traveling reporters for special events and a final story
editor to share the load. But the success of this project depends on you, the membership, to respond when asked to provide stories and ideas for future issues.
We cannot succeed without you. Don’t tell me that you do not have enough time, at my age I am the one with little of that. Please help us make the Drifter
bigger and better than ever!
Now that the July issue has been published, work has begun on the huge 50th Anniversary issue for August, with expanded pages, stories and photos of early
cars and people. Larry Wilson has provided articles and pictures of the early years of SVR with The Drifter. Also Kirk Bradford has located ten of the thirty-five
charter members, many of whom we hope will be able to attend the big anniversary party at Deavers on August 25th. This is a special time in any clubs’ life
and I plan not only to help celebrate but to make an historical record, through this this newsletter, for those in the future. The PCA motto is “It’s not just the
cars, it’s the people”. It is the people of the Sacramento Valley Region that have kept this region alive for fifty years!
I am asking for any ideas you might have for a subject in future issues and articles Comments will be appreciated as The Drifter is for you and by you.
Some general observations and ramblings about things going on.
• The July board meeting has been moved to July 10th. Same place, same
time. Different day.
• Walter and Mae Minato (dual members with SVR from Sierra Nevada
Region) attended the Eureka tour and were wearing some rather unique
name tags. The name tags were from the 1979 Porsche Parade in Reston,
Virginia. The logo for that Parade featured a silhouette of the roofline
of 5 Porsches. It had a nice grey background and the silhouette had an
alternating silver and maroon pattern. I mentioned to Walter that the
50th anniversary logo for SVR had a similar design. I showed him a flyer
for the event and pointed out that it was designed by Larry Wilson. When
you look at the logo, it has the SVR logo and the body outline of a 356
in the front and a 911 in the background. Walter immediately corrected
me and said that since Larry had designed it, Larry would say that it was
the outline of a 356 with some background. I think there is more to this
story. I will do some checking.
• The Eureka tour and weekend had a great turnout and was a great
event. As expected, there were a number of opportunities for people to
be recognized as candidates for the Dummkopf Award. There is also a
strong candidate from the SVR AX school held on May 19th at Mather
Field. Seems that a helmet was run over and required extrication from
underneath a 911. Kirk Bradford suggested that all it needed was some
duct tape and it would be as good as new. Another person suggested
that it should become the new ‘trophy’ for the award. Shall see what Jim
McMahen reports.
• Speaking of the Eureka tour, the bugs that we encountered on the way up
were really BIG. The smart folks were the ones that washed their car at the
motel upon arrival. The rest of us are still working on getting them out of
all of those small openings in the front.
• Speaking of clean: when I dropped by the Niello dealership out in
Rocklin the other day, I did not see a speck of dirt anywhere. The ceiling
lighting in the showroom was bright, the desks of the sales folks spotless,
and the offices void of any of the small Porsche car models on the shelves.
The June issues of the DRIFTER were neatly stacked in the customer
lounge (with the free Wi-Fi). Something about a review?
• There will be a Porsche corral at the Monterey Motorsport Reunion (the
old ‘historics’) in August. You can sign up at www.motorsportreg.com.
The featured marque is the Shelby Cobra. You have to purchase tickets
to the event in order to gain access to the corral.
• Speaking of Monterey, the Autobahn event registration is at
legendsoftheautobahn.org. The event is on the Friday of the ‘historics’
weekend. This year Audi has been added to the field that includes
Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes Benz. The event consists of a concours,
corral and picnic that is a celebration of German automotive
engineering.
• And the annual CAM (California Automobile Museum) car cruise
has signups available until July 15th at the museums website: www.
calautomuseum.org. Our own Kim Nelson is in charge. The event is
free to spectators.
• F1 (Formula 1) returns to the United States in November. Hill Country
Region is hosting a special program for this inaugural event in Austin,
Texas. Special PCA member 3-day passes for select reserve seats in Turn
12 are available at the PCA National website: www.pca.org. Just look
for the USGP ticket offer link. General public 3-day passes go on sale
in July.
• The 2012 SVR Membership Directory has been e-mailed to members.
If you do not have an e-mail address, you can request a copy of the
directory from Mike Willis. He can be reached at 916.363.8313
• Interesting to note that the January thru March 2012 worldwide sales
for the Cayenne was more than twice what it was for the 911. Of course
the 997 was on the way out and folks were waiting for the 991. On the
production side for the same period, the Cayenne was almost half of the
36,067 Porsches made.
The Saga of Porsche # 131859
By Kent Brandon, SVR Member
Cindy and I just obtained a new Porsche family member and we
have named her Italia, because she started life in Bologna Italy
47 years ago. The car is a 1965 356 SC coupe Bali blue on the
outside with a Faun interior. A more accurate description would
be that she started out in those colors but is now disassembled and
painted with black primer.
The idea of owning a 356 started last
summer at the Monterey Historics. Rich
Swenson, Jim McMahen, and myself
were attending the Legends of the
Autobahn show, watching Bob Cannon’s
recently restored SC sunroof coupe
be judged and as we watched started
1965 356SC
discussing the idea of restoring a 356. We
began to make financial calculations in our heads as we continued
to watch the judging of Bob and Eliane’s car. The three of us have
worked together on other car projects and there is a bonding of
friends that takes place during the process that is very enjoyable.
After returning home I slowly started turning the idea over
in my head and at some point started looking for cars. Kim
Nelson directed me to join the 356 Registry to gain a little more
knowledge about the cars, which I did. Bob Cannon offered
to review any potential candidates prior to purchase. My first
candidate was of interest because the owner was willing to trade for
a car that I have. After Bob looked at the pictures, I was advised
that the cost of the restoration would be many times its final value.
My interest was ramped up after actually negotiating with a seller
so I started dutifully looking at several web sites to find a good car.
Each time I would find something, off if would go to Bob who
gave me sound advice. I learned that there are lots more cars out
there that you don’t want than ones you do.
The advertisement that lead to the purchase of Italia was in a web
site for the Northwest 356 community. The site had a classified
section, something fairly rare for these groups, and it had one ad
with no pictures. The ad simply said, “1965 356 SC restoration
started call Kent”. The fact that the seller had my first name
perked my interest so I immediately called the number listed and
Kent answered the phone. I said this is Kent calling about your
Porsche ad and he was a little confused but finally figured out we
both shared the same name. I was told that the car had been in
storage for 10 years and that shortly after starting to replace the
floor and battery box area he was transferred by Exxon Mobil to
England for a short job that turned into 10 years. We started
discussing where exactly the car was and I was surprised to find
out it was in Portland Oregon because that was where I was born
and raised. After sharing a little of our histories with each other
we determined that we both graduated from same college and
belonged to the same fraternity. After
we recognized this connection the
certainty of our transaction became
assured. We agreed on a price based
on Bob Cannon approving of the car.
Bob reviewed the group of pictures and
thought it was a good candidate for restoration so the deal was set
and a time agreed to for the transfer of dollars and car.
I solicited the help of Roger Walker to help me bring the new
treasure to California and so Roger came over the weekend before
the trip and helped me prepare for the transport. Roger verified
what we would need and made adaptations to the car trailer ramps
so that we could move the small dolly wheels the car was mounted
on, up onto the trailer. Roger is very thorough and thoughtful
about his projects and did a great job of thinking the process
through. We made special blocks to assure the rollers didn’t move
on the flat bed and mounted plywood to the top of the ramps so
that the wheels would roll smoothly up onto the trailer. We made
it to Portland in one day and met Kent that night for dinner, beer,
and talk. The next morning our group met at the storage facility
and saw the car for the first time. I already had pictures so I was
not surprised that it was about 50% apart, wheels and engine
were off the car and it was mounted on a dolly with small rotating
casters. The seat and flooring were in the storage room with many
boxes of parts. I assumed all parts were there since I didn’t have
the time or knowledge to figure what exactly I had. After a 2 hour
process of loading the trailer Roger and I headed back south on I 5.
The first stop we made was at the 7 Feathers Casino in the southern
end of Oregon. The parking lot attendant said there was oil under
the truck; I had noticed it before we stopped but Roger insisted we
should immediately check the underside
of the truck. Close examination reveled
the rear differential was leaking. We
purchased oil and a funnel and opened
up the plug, showing we were low on
oil, so we filled it up. After driving g 20
miles we pull over to see how the fluid
356 Transformation
was doing and found out it was low again,
NOT A GOOD SIGN. At this point we are hundreds of miles
from home on a Saturday with a potentially disastrous mechanical
condition. Roger and I made 2 more stops adding more oil each
time we stopped. Finally we decided that were not going to make
it home so we called a repair shop in Medford and the mechanic
suggested we see if the vent tube was plugged. We followed this
advice and removed the vent tube, poked a coat hanger into the
differential and filled it back up. That did the trick and we made it
back to Newcastle after midnight. This reminds me I still haven’t
cleaned out and replaced the plugged rubber tube.
The car now sits in our garage on a dolly and has begun its
transformation from an ugly ducking to a beautiful swan. Our goal
is to repaint the original Bali blue and restore the car to its original
condition. Rich Swenson and Jim McMahen have been coming
over on a regular basis to work on the transformation. In addition
to Rich and Jim I have help from Joe Schumacher and Bill Keegan
with disassembly. Currently the car has been totally disassembled,
sand blasted and primed. The battery box area is rebuilt, and we are
moving from front to back cutting, and replacing any questionable
body repairs. Engine and transmission
have already been rebuilt. Rich, Jim and
I are looking forward to a consult with
the oracle of Lacy lane, Bob Cannon for
replacing body metal. They are all experts
at restoration and say if you are going to
do it the only way is the right way.
The Social Corner: Dreams during a flight to Sacramento
By Eduardo Ortega Jr., 2012 SVR Social Director
Got Comments? Write to social@svr-pca.org
“Hello, this is your Captain. We have reached the 40,000 feet
cruising altitude. We will arrive in Sacramento in about 40
minutes…”
- Heard two days ago over the intercom of the Boeing 737-700
Airplane in my return trip to Sacramento from Burbank.
Prior to my intense love affair with Porsche automobiles in
my teenager days, there were other two passions that had
captivated me during my childhood: Spaceships and Airplanes.
Oh boy! My generation, which became of age in the 1980s, still
participated fully in the excitement of the 1960s space race. The
Apollo 11 landing in the Moon, the still fresh space race against
the Soviet Union, the supersonic flights of the Concorde, the
magic of commercial jet travel. Way before I even knew what
a University education was, I dreamt in my elementary school
years that I wanted to be an Astronaut or an Aircraft Pilot.
By the way, I have observed over the years that many Civil
Engineers like me also wanted to be Pilots. Coincidence? I think
not…
At 40,000 feet cruising altitude, the words resonated in my
mind. That is 7.57 miles above the surface of the Earth.
Less than 110 years ago the dream of flight was harbored by
generations of humans that melancholically had to resign
themselves to watch the birds fly. We took off from Burbank,
the plane made a quick 90-degree banking turn and we were
headed towards Sacramento. Sitting by the window, I gazed
at the heavily populated San Fernando Valley below. The
Grapevine Mountains quickly appeared, and I was amazed how
two-dimensional they looked, like the topographic maps we
use in engineering. Following the ridgelines, I saw complicated
curving roads that lead to individual homes right at the top of
many ridges. It reminded me of the many SVR members that
live in the foothills. Distances look so much shorter from the
air, were the third variable of height has been removed, thus
giving the impression of two-dimensional surfaces as I described
before.
Having completed about 15 minutes of detailed observations
of the ground below, I retrieved my May issue of Panorama,
and read the “Ontogenesis of a Car Chick”, followed by “The
Monumental Sale of the Drendel Turbos”. They are two
very different articles that have in common similar Porsche
Dreams. One is about a lifelong PCA member that has won
About the drifter
the Enthusiast of The Year Award, while the other is about a
very lucky man that in his lifetime amassed the greatest private
collection of turbo Porsches. I liked both articles a lot.
After I completed my reading, I began to daydream. I started
to wonder if my single PCA raffle ticket entry could be lucky
enough to win me the grand prize this July. Then I switched to
my observations of the last 48 hours in Santa Barbara, of how
I have seen only a couple of 911s. By contrast, I remembered
that in our family vacation last year in Los Angeles, during the
day we drove to the Getty Villa Museum in the Pacific Coast
Highway, I lost count of the many Porsches that I encountered
in the road. Most of them were 911 Cabriolets, by the way.
Southern California is the capital for sunbathing lifestyles, after
all. Finally I wondered when I was going to take my own 911 SC
driving in the coast from San Francisco all the way to Newport
Beach. We are lucky that the PCH is one of the most beautiful
highway rides in the world. Maybe only the travelling around the
Mediterranean Sea may rival the beauty of our Pacific Ocean and
the glorious Pacific Coast Highway.
In the subject of dreams, Beth Jacobson told me during the Fats
Asia Bistro Club Dinner, that after reading my column “Keeping
an Eye for The Future of Car Clubs”, she also wondered how to
spark the interest for Porsche automobiles in the young people
of today. She lamented that in the schools, the car shop classes
have been cut in most High Schools due to budget issues, and
normally that would have been an ideal place to share our
passions for Porsches. I said that after the article was published,
I thought that an easy way to start the passion could be to have
small “Wash and Shine” style Concours or demonstration in
selected high schools of the region, to give the chance to the
young students to admire the cars and talk Porsche with the
proud owners. I also read in Panorama (must have been in
2011?) the article about the family of the year. In the article
they described that over the years that family would buy a nonrunning
914, and have local teens rebuild this car until they were
ready to participate in local races. My insurance company for my
Porsche, Hagerty, currently has a teenager employed as a reporter.
He attends events, takes pictures, and writes some articles. There
are many ways to incentive the new generation to have an interest
in Porsche cars, and in turn, PCA-SVR. This topic needs to have
a unified vision in the future, so we can form teams and come up
with an action plan.
Finally, look at the SVR calendar in the website. There are many
activities scheduled for the next couple of months. And keep on
dreaming …
