From FDR’s Oval Office
by Frederick D. Rauch, PCA-SVR President
SVR is need of a Club Treasurer
The Board of Directors is seeking a SVR member to take over as our region’s Treasurer. Back in April Mike Willis volunteered to temporarily
serve as the acting Treasurer. Mike currently serves as the Membership Director and the Advertising Chair and has served every other board
position over the years and continues to volunteer in acting positions to maintain continuity in the clubs operations. The key word is
temporary and we need to relieve Mike of the role of the Acting Club Treasurer ASAP.
That being said if you have a background in QuickBooks, have bookkeeping or accounting skills and are willing to contribute 3-4 hours
a week to the club, now’s your opportunity. As a member of the Board of Directors, you will become an important member of the team
responsible for SVR developing policies, managing activities and serving the region’s 1,000+ members.
The duties of the Treasurer include:
• Serving a member of the Board of Directors
• Managing SVR finances using Intuit QuickBooks software.*
• Working with Board Members and Event Chairs to prepare an annual budget for Board approval.
• Developing, as needed, financial policies and procedures.
• Preparing monthly income and expense reports of SVR’s financial condition.
• Attending monthly Board meetings to help direct the region’s operations.
• Coordinating with an accountant to prepare annual federal and state taxes.
• Familiarity with on-line banking would be helpful and a time saver.
For more information please contact me at president@svr-pca.org or 916-595-3371 cell
Stirring the Pot with the Soup Spoon
by Rik Larson, Vice President
• Ruth Stark has got her Charity Auction publicity out all over the
place. If you need to have a donated item picked up prior to the
event, she will be glad to make arrangements to store items till the
auction on September 11th. Did you see the size of that Teddy
Bear?
• Kevin Dougherty is chairing the October dinner (just added to the
schedule). It will be held at the Back Bistro in Folsom. SVR had a
dinner there a couple of years ago, just shortly after they opened.
The place has recently expanded. Menu selection, price, and other
details were not available as we went to press. Be sure and check
out the e-mail BLASTs for all the information. Date is Monday,
October 3rd.
• The tour on October 8th is going thru some significant changes.
Seems that the original destination/locale is having a big event that
day. So Lee and Dan are scouting out a different location. Details
next month but should have some info in the next e-mail BLAST.
• Planning for the SVR Christmas Party is progressing very nicely,
thanks to Mike and Emily Willis. The date will be Sunday,
December 11th in the afternoon. It will be at the Sutter Club,
downtown Sacramento. More details as they become available.
• At the Pebble Beach Concours, a 1949 356/2 coupe entered by
Hans-Peter Porsche of Austria, won the Postwar Sports Closed
class. The story goes that this car was part of a group of cars
purchased in Kentucky(?) several years ago and was just recently
restored (thousands of hours of labor). It was the 45th Porsche
built.
• Only 7 spots remain for the wine tasting event at the Jacobson’s
in October.
• Saturday at the Rennsport Reunion IV appears to be the best
day to attend. The schedule identifies a Parade exhibition of
Porsche’s racing history from 3pm to 3:40 pm to be followed by
a Concours on Pit Lane. Gates open at 7 am. And the big tease
is that the new 2012 Porsche 911 (991) will be there.
• Several quick items from the Porsche Parade in Savannah. It
was HOT. The Zone Representatives Award was made to Tim
Fleming (in memoriam). Sharon Neidel, Zone 7 Representative,
provided a great background about Tim. Sue Fleming accepted
the award. SVR webmaster John Murphy placed 2nd in Class IV
of the website competition. He and Phil Wood did an overhaul
of the website and their efforts were well rewarded. Did I say it
was HOT? SVR member Dustin Aydt arrived late to the Parade,
but he planned it that way. He was part of the Tech Academy
held on Friday. Dustin works at Niello Porsche (like he works
on Porsches). And SVR took home some hardware in the TSD
Rally. Jessica (Golden Gate Region) and J Toney took 3rd place
in the Equipped Class. They had won this class and overall
the previous 5 years. Terry Zaccone (Golden Gate Region)
and I won the Navigational class. We also won this class at the
2008 Parade in Charlotte, NC. It was HOT. All the results,
photos, awards, etc. are available at the Parade web site www.
parade2011.pca.org
• Salt Lake City is the site for the Parade in 2012. Jessica and
J Toney are in charge of the TSD Rally. Come on out to the
Carrera de Sierra event on September 17th to get some early
experience. SVR and Zone 7 always do well at the Porsche
Parades.
Corner Exit and Throttle Skills
By Collin Fat, SVR Member
One of the best ways to reduce your lap times whether on a
track or autocross course is by increasing your corner exit speed.
Depending on the type of Porsche you drive the strategy for exit is
almost always similar.
As soon as you pass the braking point of the turn, and approach
the apex you can apply a little throttle gently at first and with
gusto as the car straightens at the turn out point. For the beginner
this might seem very early, but in fact is the ideal position to start
applying throttle for several reasons.
First, the sooner you apply throttle the sooner the rear wheels in
this example start doing some work by applying the new found
power to the rear wheels and the sooner the rear wheels start
carrying the load. For a micro second during the turn you will be
off the throttle and in a neutral position, off the brakes and in
steering the car through the turn. You would not be under steering
or over-steering assuming you came in to the turn at the correct
speed for your car’s set-up and tire type. This moment in time
when you have just passed the apex is what I term your neutral
point in the turn and the ideal position to start applying throttle.
How much depends on your tires and the amount of power
available. Should you exit the turn and not start applying throttle
to the exit of the turn you would be loosing up to .2 seconds just in
the matter of 10-20 feet.
PCA-SVR AUTOCROSS #4
Sunday, August 14, 2011 - Mather Field
by Bob Peake, SVR AX Chair 2011
Photos courtesy of Doug Klien, SVR Member
It was another sunny summer day at Mather. We only had 34 drivers run the event
so there was lots of track time available. Twelve timed runs, and 18 total laps with
the warm-up laps … some people stopped early, they were getting low on tires!
On a course of just less than 60 seconds, this is valuable time and
real estate difficult to make up in other sections of the course.
As you apply throttle after or at the apex try moderate throttle
versus slamming the pedal to the medal which may induce severe
understeer as the amount of available grip will likely exceed the slip
angle or available traction of the front tires that are still doing the
steering. As the throttle is applied it is also extremely important to
let the car run out so that you will be using the full width of the
course. This allows you to use all of the track available and will let
you “unwind” the steering wheel while applying throttle.
As you begin to straighten the wheel for the next turn or obstacle
you should now be in a position of applying full throttle. Beginner’s
will generally have the tendency on corner exit to hold the line too
tight and not let the wheel unwind as throttle is applied generally
later that the more experienced driver.
The term “slow in and fast out” has often been used to describe the
optimum approach to entry as well as corner exit strategy for the
Porsche brand and in general applies to more modern, rear, mid
and all wheel driver variants.
So the next time out at the track or an autocross course try
applying the throttle just a little earlier and let that steering wheel
unwind and I know that your times will get faster and faster with
more practice.
To try and bridge the gap between AX and Track events, and “course designer writers block”, this month’s course
was the 11 turns from Laguna Seca, in proper order. We were missing the elevation changes and the long straights
between the corners, but it still proved to be a fun and fairly fast course (with the exception of the Corkscrew and
Turn 11, naturally).
Thanks for coming out and running the event, we look forward to seeing you at our next Autocross at our new
Mather Field site on Sept 25th … maybe the weather will be a bit cooler by then!
Registration will open on August 26th. Be sure and sign up early … it could be a
sell out!
Till we Autocross again …..
SVR Sweeps Zone 7 Concours at Carlsen Porsche
by Jim McMahen, SVR Member
Early Sunday morning, July 17th, a group of SVR concours enthusiasts met at Ted Blake’s repair and restoration shop for the two hour drive
to Carlsen Porsche in order to compete at the fourth, in a series of six, Zone 7 Concours events for 2011. This event was presented by Golden
Gate Region.
At the end of the drive the cars were placed and final preparations began with a flurry of dusting off the road grime before the judges would
make their rounds. We were all hoping that we had prepared the perfect car and would receive the illusive “perfect score”.
A wonderful lunch was served while scores were tallied and contestants awaited their fate.
SVR was well represented with Kent Brandon, Jim McMahen, Kim Nelson, Joe Schumacher, Tom Sisson, Dennis Stettner and Bruce Ungari
earning first place awards in their respective classes.
SVR Again Sweeps Zone 7 Concours in Stockton
by Joe Schumacher, SVR Member
San Joaquin Delta College was the setting for the 5th concours of the 2011 Zone 7 Series and again SVR was victorious in all classes entered.
SVR winners included: Tom Sisson, Kim and Rachel Nelson, Bruce and Cathy Ungari, Jim and Linda McMahen, Roger and Jan Walker, Mark
and Stephanie Fleishman, and Joe and Jennifer Schumacher. The event was held on Sunday, August 28th.
SVR shines at the Carmel and Autobahn Concours
by Joe Schumacher, SVR Member
Bob and Elaine Cannon took first in the 356 coupe class and also captured the Mayor’s Trophy at the Carmel Concours on the Avenue held on
August 16th. And to continue their outstanding showing, they took first in their class at the Autobahn event on August 19th.
With the rolling landscape and park benches
on a perfectly-groomed lawn, you might
think you were in Bavaria, which is exactly
what Porsche Cars North America intends
with its Porsche Park-in-the-Paddock—located
amongst the vintage race cars at Mazda Raceway
Laguna Seca for Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV,
October 14-16. This area, located behind the media
center (where the tire companies usually set up for
a race weekend), will feature an authentic German
biergarten as well as German food and and a park
atmosphere so Rennsport attendees can take a break
from the on-track activity and absorb the experience.
But Rennsport fans will still know that they are at a
Porsche event, as the Park-in-the-Paddock will have
plenty of sports car activity as well, according to
Bernd Harling, Porsche’s Principal Communications
Counsel and coordinator for Rennsport.
“Besides the food and drink, our Park-in-the-Paddock
will include a center stage where driver introductions
and all the autograph sessions will take place and
live music will be played, as well as the very popular
model car display, photo opportunities with the CARS
movie star Sally Carrera—maybe our most famous
911—and a Porsche Sport Driving School activity center,”
said Harling.
“We also hope to have a sneak showing of a future
Porsche model in the Park, but it’s a little too early to
be able to confirm its appearance,” Harling teased.
Other activities around the paddock are taking
shape as well for the October event. “Porsche Motorsports
North America, headquartered in Santa Ana,
will have a display not only to show its modern and
vintage race car parts and service capabilities, but
to encourage the many Porsche race car owners to
take advantage of the company’s free technical advice
offered to anyone who asks,” said Harling.
With the Porsche 911 being the featured race car
of Rennsport IV, fans will also be able to view two 911
Park-in-the-Paddock
includes genuine German
biergarten, real turf, and
lots of opportunities to
relax and enjoy the magic
Rennsport Reunion IV
Will Feature Porsche Park
displays which help capture the history of this iconic
sports car. The first is a special collection of the most
significant 15 race cars in 911 history. The other 911
display is being assembled by the Porsche Club of
America, and proved to be very popular at Porsche
Rennsport III at Daytona in 2007. In order to show
the progression of the Porsche 911 model, the club
has assembled 40 examples representing significant
models across time.
PCA will assist Rennsport Reunion IV with several
activities: History of the Porsche 911 Display,
Porsche Model-Specific Parking Corrals with Parade
laps of the track, PCA Hospitality and Membership
Center, two race groups: Rennsport Reunion Cup
for Porsche Cup Cars and PCA Club Racing for PCA
race cars, and PCA Volunteer Pool—workers to assist
with the club’s involvement. Enhancing the Rennsport
Reunion Cup race, Michelin Tire Company
comes on board as the spec tire manufacturer for that
exciting contest.
The assembly of exceptional examples of 911
production models for the History of the Porsche 911
Display is well underway, representing the 911 model
throughout its generational life. To apply to participate
in the display, please contact Tom Provasi for
information and registration at tprovasi@netgate.
net or 408/947-0980.
Many PCA workers have volunteered to assist
with our activities at the Rennsport Reunion IV. If you
are interested in supporting the effort, please contact
Sharon Neidel with the PCA Volunteer Pool at sharon
neidel@yahoo.com or 650/508-1308. We will have a
very special event memento for the volunteer workers.
Additional details of the Porsche Rennsport
Reunion IV are published on the following Porsche
The car has never been on the track. Includes after market windscreen and car cover. I have the complete
