Bluegrass Gem,<br />

Mineral and Rock Show<br />

The Bluegrass Gem & Mineral Club will have its show at<br />

the Central Office’s gym of the Estill County Public Schools, 253<br />

Main St., Irvine. Hours for the show are Fri., April 27, 9 a.m.<br />

to 5 p.m., Sat., April 28, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sun., April 29, 10<br />

a.m. to 5 p.m. Estill County students will visit the show on Fri.,<br />

April 27 to learn about rocks, gems, and minerals. There will<br />

be exhibits by rockhounds, information on agates, gems, rocks,<br />

fossils, and minerals, demonstrations, vendor sales, and a black<br />

light display of fluorescent material.<br />

Local agate hunters plus vendors from many states have<br />

registered to participate. They will have the following items for<br />

the show: slabs and cabs for sale, demonstrate wire wrapping,<br />

minerals, fossils, agate, rock and mineral items, jewelry, Kentucky<br />

agate polished specimens, mineral specimens, flint stone<br />

jewelry, silver jewelry, beads, African trade beads, and wire<br />

wrapped items, crystals, meteorites, paint rock agate, Arizona<br />

agate, facet rough, hand wrapped gemstones, gemstone created<br />

jewelry, gem trees, wire wrapped pendants and earrings.<br />

Pancake Breakfast<br />

Start your day at the festival with a hearty breakfast!<br />

The Estill County Chapter of the Masonic Lodge will<br />

dish out an all you can eat pancake breakfast for a hungry<br />

festival crowd at their lodge located at 221 Broadway &<br />

Lilly Ave. on Sat., April 28 from 7 a.m. - 11 a.m. Pancakes,<br />

sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, juice, milk, and coffee<br />

will be served. The cost will be $5 for adults and $3.50<br />

for children from 5 to 12 years old. Children 4 and under<br />

eat free. 5-K participants will get a $1 discount. Carryout<br />

will be available by calling 723-2188. Tickets may be purchased<br />

from any lodge member or may be purchased at<br />

the door.<br />

Chickens and people are alike in that the<br />

more you give them the less likely they will<br />

scratch for it themselves.<br />

Festival Parade<br />

One of the Mountain Mushroom Festival crowd’s favorite<br />

event is the parade. It will be Sat., April 28. “Happy<br />

200th Birthday, City of Irvine” will be the theme. It will<br />

begin at 1 p.m. with the line-up at 11:45 a.m. behind Estill<br />

Springs School, 314 Main St., Irvine. Judging will begin<br />

promptly at noon. The parade will proceed up Court<br />

Street onto Broadway and end at Ravenna City Park.<br />

Grand marshals will be former mayors of Irvine. Civic<br />

organizations, churches, fire departments, and school<br />

clubs are invited to participate in the parade by entering<br />

antique vehicles, bands, marching units, and floats. The<br />

entry fee for a float is $5 April 20 or before and $10 April<br />

21-28. Floats will be judged on creativity, originality, and<br />

beauty. Also 10 extra points will be given if mushrooms<br />

are used on the float. Cash prizes will be given for the top<br />

three winners of the floats. The prizes in the float category<br />

are $150 for first prize, $100 for second prize, and $50 for<br />

third prize.<br />

Parade participants will not be allowed to toss candy<br />

or other objects to the crowd in the interest of safety of<br />

the community. Candy can be handed out.Parade applications<br />

and guidelines are available in Irvine City Hall or<br />

on the festival website: www.mountainmushroomfestival.<br />

Race Day Activities:<br />

Race Day Registration/Check-In: 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. at<br />

corner of Broadway & Estill Ave., Irvine.<br />

Race starting time: 9 a.m. Awards will be given following<br />

the race at the finish line. Snacks and drinks will be served at the<br />

finish line.<br />

Entry Fee: $15 (April 26 or before) or $18 (April 27-28) Make<br />

check payable to Mountain Mushroom Festival and return to Irvine<br />

City Hall. Fee includes t-shirt. Check size on registration form.<br />

Race Course:<br />

The course starts at the Irvine School Apartments, 223<br />

Broadway, (corner of Broadway and Lily Ave.). It continues on<br />

Broadway, through the festival area to Court St., left on Court<br />

St. to River Drive, left on River Drive, left on 8th St. in Ravenna,<br />

and left on Broadway to the finish line at Estill Ave. Runners<br />

start in front, followed by walkers. The race course is on the<br />

website.<br />

Race Staff:<br />

The staff from John’s Run/Walk Shop in Lexington will be<br />

supervising the race.<br />

Assisting Organization: The Kiwanis Club of Irvine-Ravenna<br />

will assist with the race.<br />

Age Groups: Males and Females:<br />

13 and under, 14-16, 17-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-<br />

49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75+<br />
