Multi-Million $$ Producers
From the Editor:
The cost of gas is driving us all to walk!
Goodness, with the miles that I put on my
car each month, I should own stock in the gas
companies. It’s just steadily rose all of the past
month. I drove over 1,000 miles just delivering
the magazine at the start of the month. That’s
a lot of gas. Even if my car got 50 miles to the
gallon, it’s still a lot of gas. I hate to see how
much it has gone up by the time this magazine
gets back from the printers.
If it keeps going up, I’m going to have to
sell ads at the same time that I’m delivering
the magazine. Sometimes making two and
three trips back to catch someone is just getting
spendier each month. I guess I shouldn’t
complain. It wouldn’t do any good anyway. And
since I didn’t win that Mega-Jackpot, I’ll just
keep on doing what I’m doing. Until I’m walking
at least. Then, I might just have to re-think
things!
It’s hard to believe it, but the Mushroom Festival
is this month. It seems like we just started
the new year, and it’s already April. Our Spring
Photo Contest is being held in conjunction
with the Mushroom Festival this year. We will
be displaying the top ten pictures at the festival
for all the visitors to enjoy. The winning photo
will be featured on our May front page, plus
you’ll win $100.00 in cash! Get your cameras
out because I’ve already received several entries.
There are more details in this book!
Spring has decided to come early to those
of us in Kentucky this year. It’s a tad-bit scary
because all of our flowers are coming up and
I’m afraid a big freeze will happen and kill
everything. Even scarier? The blueberries are
blooming. A freeze would wipe out the entire
crop.
I’m anxious to get out and work in my
garden this year. Last year, I was starting from
scratch. And although I’m not anywhere close
to where I want to be, it’s a bit prettier already
this year with things coming up. Our blackberries
are our main priority this spring. We hope
to get two rows transplanted from up at the
C2H2 Farm in the next week or so. Barring
any ‘unusual’ weather.
• • • • •
As I type this, all I am hearing is the hype on
the television about the University of Kentucky’s
big game tonight. I wish the magazine
was printing one day later - so I could congratulate
them when they win the NCAA
championship tonight. I hate to even say that,
for fear of jinxing things. But, man, what a team
they have this year. They have really gelled and
the players actually work together so good. I
kind of wish none of them would leave, so we
could do it again next season!
• • • • •
Here’s hoping every one of you has a wonderful
month ahead of you. And Happy Spring!
Until Next Month,
Blessings to you! Pam
Bedding, Towel and
Dishcloth Drive
All Things country magazine will be collecting new, homemade and
lightly used Bedding, Towels and Dishcloths through the month of April.
These will be given to representatives from the East Bernstadt and West
Liberty areas at the Mountain Mushroom Festival. These areas were devastated
by tornadoes the first week of March. Donations may be dropped off at
60 Thornburg Bend in Irvine - or call 606-723-0478 and we will pick up the
items before the Mushroom Festival. Thanks so much!
Tax Bracket vs. Tax Rate: What’s the Difference?
By Tamara Rice, CPA
What’s your tax bracket? With the numbers from your federal
income tax return fresh on your mind, you probably know
the answer or can find it easily. Are you as familiar with your
effective tax rate?
You may be thinking tax bracket, tax rate - what’s the difference?
The main difference is that a tax bracket is a range of
income to which a specific tax rate applies, while your effective
tax rate is the percentage of your income that you actually pay
in tax. Put another way, not every dollar is taxed at the same
rate. Your tax bracket shows the rate of tax on the last dollar5
you made during the tax year. Your effective tax rate reflects the
actual amount you paid on all your taxable income.
For example, say you’re single and in the 25% bracket for
2011. That means your taxable income is between $34,501 and
$83,600.
Yet the tax you pay is less than 25% of your income.
Why? Because the 25% tax rate only applies to the amount
of taxable income within the 25% bracket. The tax on income
below $34,501 is calculated using the rate that applies to income
in the 10% and 15% brackets.
So if your 2011 taxable income is $40,000, only $5,500 is
taxed at 25%. The remainder is taxed at 101% and 15%, leading
to a ‘blended’ overall rate. The result: a tax bracket of 25%, and
an effective tax rate of less than that.
Knowing your tax bracket is useful for planning purposes.
For instance, you may want to spread a Roth conversion over
several years in order to stay within the income limits of a particular
Your effective rate provides an accurate reflection of your
tax liability in relation to your total income.
Making Hay Before May?
After an extremely warm winter, many forage grasses and
small grains used for forages are quickly nearing the stages
where they need to be cut to maintain optimum feed quality, according
to Ray Smith, Extension forage specialist in the University
of Kentucky College of Agriculture.
Smith said this is the earliest forages have matured in the
seven years he’s been at UK. Depending on the area of the state,
this is two to three weeks ahead of schedule. “Alfalfa and small
grains lose nutrient value as they get to the later growth stages,”
Smith said. “However, nutrient values in small grains drop
much quicker than in alfalfa.” Small grains, like wheat, rye and
barley, are cut for high-quality silage used to feed dairy cattle.
Producers should harvest them at the late boot stage to get the
highest quality. Much of the wheat used for silage could reach
this stage by mid-April.
For optimum quality and yield, alfalfa and should be cut at
bud stage, before the blooms are open. Orchardgrass needs to be
cut at boot stage before the seed head emerges. “Alfalfa in many
areas of Southern Kentucky is ready to be cut now,” Smith said.
“Alfalfa in Central and Northern Kentucky is probably one to
two weeks from being ready for its first cutting. Some parts of
Kentucky will have orchardgrass at boot stage within one to two
weeks.”
Before harvesting, he suggested alfalfa producers scout
their fields for damage from the alfalfa weevil. If damage is
significant on stands that are ready for harvesting, producers
should cut the alfalfa to control the insect. Producers should
check their fields about five days after cutting to see if normal
regrowth is occurring. If present in high enough numbers,
surviving weevil larvae and adults can damage regrowth. If the
alfalfa isn’t ready for harvest and there is a significant amount
of weevil damage, producers need to spray their fields with an
insecticide. UK entomologist Lee Townsend said producers need
to check the “days to harvest” section of the label when selecting
products to see how long to wait between application and
harvest. This interval varies with products and application rates.
In addition, other cool-season forages like tall fescue will
be ready for cutting earlier than normal this spring. “Ideally
producers make a first cutting by mid-May to get a good quality
feed, but this year, harvesting in late April may be too late to
get high quality grass hay,” Smith said. “Because a first cutting
is needed earlier than normal, there’s a very good chance for
producers to get a high quality second cutting before the hot
temperatures of summer set in.”
Since producers are harvesting high quality forages of all
types, a lot of nutrients are going to be removed from the soils
with the cuttings. Producers will want to follow fertilizer recommendations
for replacing the lost nutrients found in UK extension
publication AGR 1: Lime and Nutrient Recommendations.
All Things Country Magazine
honored with American Cancer
Society Lighthouse Award for
Outstanding Contribution
The American Cancer Society is pleased to announce that
All Things Country has been recognized with the Lighthouse
Award for Media Excellence in Kentucky by the American Cancer
Society’s Mid-South Division.
This award recognizes outstanding contributions to promoting
the fight against cancer through both print and electronic
media during the last fiscal year. Media outlets are nominated
based on coverage they have dedicated to cancer news
and public service messages they have placed for the American
Cancer Society. Outlets compete in categories based on community
size and outlet distribution.
“As a volunteer-driven organization, the American Cancer
Society counts on corporate citizens like All Things Country to
help us further our mission of eliminating cancer. The media has
really gotten behind the cause and helped us raise awareness in
this community, and we are grateful for that,” said Julie Sumner,
area director for the American Cancer Society.
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion
with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end
suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than
three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened
by every cancer in every community. We save lives by
helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it
early; helping people get well by being there for them during
and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment
in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying
lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying
communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest
non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing
more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into
what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America
who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it
will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us
or to get help, call us any time, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or
AlpacaBerry Farm
Four scout members of Cub Scout Troop Pack 87 visited
the AlpacaBerry Farm in March to complete achievements towards
rank and to work on the World Conservation Award.
They also studied about Leave No Trace.
Scout leaders Beth Abshear and Tonya Dawson led the
scouts through several different activities, including a flag pole
ceremony, a greenhouse tour, making birdhouses and feeding
the critters on the farm.
Dave Severson, co-owner of the farm, took the kids out
to the barn with him for the morning feeding. They enjoyed
learning about alpacas, pygmy goats and silkie chickens.
The scouts present were Adam Abshear, Logan Dawson,
Matthew Jones and Dylan Sturgill. Several of their parents
and siblings accompanied the scouts to the farm, among them
Hunter Dawson of Troop 54.
A flag
ceremony
was held
during a trip
to the C2H2
Farm
The last activity involved making a cane pole
and using it to fish. A great way to end the day.
THE RICH HISTORY OF POPPY MOUNTAIN RETURNS IN 2012
20
Marty Stevens & Don McBrayer
invite you to the
20 TH ANNUAL
Poppy Mountain
Bluegrass Festival
Tuesday, September 11 thru Saturday, September 15, 2012
Poppy Mountain is one of the most incredible events you will ever attend!
The Poppy Mountain Bluegrass Festival actually begins September 1
and lasts for twenty-one fun-filled days. You may plan your schedule
to arrive at your convenience starting September 1st. There is never a
question about what you can do at Poppy Mountain. You can fish, hike,
horseback ride, rest, sight-see, and, of course, jam till your heart is
content! One thing for sure, you won’t leave Poppy Mountain
saying there wasn’t anything to do. Camping at Poppy Mountain is
one of the richest experiences your family will encounter. The gates
to Poppy Mountain open at midnight on the 1st of September after a
fun filled evening with the Annual Poppy Mountain Round-Up at the
top of the hill. We all get together (in anticipation) and have a grand
time with jamming, eating and reacquainting ourselves with old friends.
The “Round-Up” is for the die-hard first-come first-claiming camper
sites! These folks have brought their campers early to claim their (and
sometimes their friend’s) camp sites! We start charging with the very
minimal fee from the time you “claim” your site. There are usually over
2,500 motor homes and many, many tents scattered throughout the
1400 beautiful acres of Poppy Mountain. Camping sites with FREE
electric/water hookups are usually available until Friday afternoon.
There is a very economical charge per night for sites. There are
currently enough sites for 3,000 motor home plugs. We also offer
to our handicapped guests, sites close to the stage and a general
store close to their sites. Group rates are available for 10 or more
campers by calling Marty. Come spend the week or month with us,
you will enjoy it!
See y’all on the “Round Up!”
Forest Service implements
seasonal voluntary trail closure
WINCHESTER – The
Daniel Boone National Forest
has again implemented a seasonal
“voluntary trail closure”
of Caney Loop near Cave Run
Lake. The closure extends
through June 1, or until after
the spring rainy season ends.
“The Caney Loop is one
of the most heavily used trails
in this district,” said Ranger
Dave Manner. “During the
wet season, when the ground
is saturated, extensive rutting
of the trail can occur.
“As a voluntary closure,
we are asking trail users to
avoid using the trail when
wet. This will help reduce
trail damage, which will also
reduce the amount of time
and money needed to restore
the trail back to an acceptable
standard for all trail users.”
The voluntary closure
area includes Caney Trail
#1226 and a portion of Shel-
towee Trace #100 from the
Stoney Cove parking area to
the intersection of Trail #115C
that leads to the White Sulphur
Horse Camp.
Until the ground becomes
dry and the trail tread
becomes more stable, hikers
only are recommended on the
Caney Loop. Other trails west
of Cave Run Lake will remain
open for all user groups,
including horseback riders
and mountain bike riders. The
trails east of the lake are more
suitable this time of year for
cyclists.
Most trails in the Cave
Run Lake area were hand-constructed
as hiking trails during
the 1960s and 70s. These trails
were not developed to sustain
frequent or heavy use, such as
equestrian and bicycling.
“It is important to provide
a sustainable multiple-use trail
system in balance with our
natural resources and in the
interest of our forest visitors,”
added Manner.
“We look forward to the
cooperation of the various
groups and individuals who
enjoy the trails on national forest
lands.”
Coordinated by local Modern Woodmen members, chapters
provide opportunities to connect through social activities and
volunteer projects. Youth service clubs provide young Modern
Woodmen members with opportunities to volunteer, be patriotic,
learn new skills, make friends and have fun.
“Coming together on Join Hands Day can make a difference
in our community,” says Glenda Gay Oliver, local Modern
Woodmen project leader. “And, we will be part of a larger,
nationwide effort.”
As a tax-exempt fraternal benefit society, Modern Woodmen
sells life insurance, annuity and investment products not to benefit
stockholders but to improve the quality of life of its stakeholders
- members, their families and their communities. This is
accomplished through social, charitable and volunteer activities.
Annually, Modern Woodmen and its members provide more
than $23 million and nearly 1 million volunteer hours for community
projects nationwide.
Yards to Paradise...
By Max Phelps
Falling Water is So Romantic!
When the world is seemingly more crazy by the day, when
the men in charge seem to have no clue, when the rat-race has
you all wound up and you just say “Let me off!” Then it may be
about time you built a water feature at your place, or even move
beside a big natural one if you can afford to.
Nothing soothes the average human being like the sounds
made by water. Be it a trickling stream, a waterfall, or ocean
waves crashing on the shore. (I let a sweetheart get away once
at Cumberland Falls because I did not know at the time that she
was under a spell from either the waterfall or my charms!) Probably
the waterfall!
It is not just your imagination, for scientific studies have
produced verifiable evidence of lowered blood pressures in
tests, lowered heart rates, better test scores where concentration
is necessary, and amazingly even reduced crime.
Rather than try in today’s column to prove those assertions,
let us look at the romantic side of water. How many people do
you know who want to get married on the beach, by a mountain
stream, or by even a manmade waterfall in a motel or park? Yes,
in their own backyards as well!
Life is a little more cozy
when sitting by the water with
someone you care about. One
April missed that vision, but
the more tender of humans
have a weak spot for a walk, a
snuggle or a cold drink in close
proximity to a waterfall. Tough
business decisions are even
easier beside the flowing waters.
Realtors assist those who
can afford to relocate in the
wilds with a stream. Landscap-
I would like to share
an experience with you
all, about drinking and
driving. As you well know,
some have been known
to have had brushes with
the authorities on the way
home from various social
sessions over the years.
A couple of nights
ago, I was out for a few
drinks with some friends
and had a few too many
glasses of wine. Knowing
full well I may have been
slightly over the limit, I
did something I’ve never
done before - I took a bus
home.
I arrived home safely
and without incident,
which was a real surprise
as I have never driven a
bus before and am not
ers, or the homeowners themselves, can help when there is no
natural stream or waterfall nearby. A prime property with a water
feature is truly special...like they say, it’s about the ‘location’.
Indoor waterfalls, falls into swimming pools, ponds with a
waterfall, patio or table-top waterfalls, and even ‘pondless’ waterfalls
are choices one has. The sound that water falling, splashing
and trickling makes is
truly peaceful. Also really romantic.
Considering the labor to keep a lawn looking good, a pond
and waterfall are a piece of cake. For the cost of that trip to the
mountains for a week, one could build a paradise and enjoy it
daily for years to come. Backyard and front yard and even indoor
waterfalls are more common than you may have imagined. Perhaps
it’s time you thought about one for your place in paradise?
Your home paradise could be more romantic, you know!
Never be disappointed ....
Whenever I’m disappointed with my spot in life, I stop and think about
little Jamie Scott.
Jamie was trying out for a part in the school play. His mother said that
he’d set his heart on being in it, though she feared he would not be chosen.
On the day the parts were awarded, I went with her to collect him
after school. Jamie rushed up to her, eyes shining with pride and excitement.
‘Guess what, Mom,’ he shouted, and then said those words that will remain
a lesson to me.....’I’ve been chosen to clap and cheer.’
Uncle Bobby’s Poetry
Knowledge Has Been Lost
Back years ago when kids got sick
Folks knew just what to do
As years went by it’s all been lost
And we haven’t got a clue.
They knew the roots and herbs and twigs
And which ones the should pick
They mixed up their own medicine
For others who were sick.
They learned it from their mom and dad
When they were in their youth
They knew how to treat a fever
Or to sooth an aching tooth.
And how to treat the skin
That had been touched by winter frost
But now there’s no one left to ask
That knowledge has been lost.
We never went to doctors
Back when I was a kid
I wish I’d took the time to ask
So I’d know what they did
There’s things that grow in the wild
If we knew the things to do
There’s something there that’s guaranteed
To cure what’s ailing you.
Now I’m one of the old folks
My race is nearly run
I sure wish I’d learned some of that
So I could help someone
It’s plain to see that all of us
Will have to pay the cost
From not learning from the old folks
Now a way of life is lost.
In response to Mr. Hedge:
Mr. Hedge you assume old ways are hopelessly lost,
But we “moderns” are beginning to count the cost.
Granted, few of our old ones who hunt the herbs,
Are now here beside us to guide with our urge.
Still “moderns” learn, if only bits and pieces,
Searching through journals and medical thesis.
We still discover uses of wild things that be,
And best of all, I may add, see what we see!
Yes, it’s different learning from institutions,
We’re a little less clever with few intuitions!
With the “health care” crisis and sickness prevailing,
We’ve answered the cry to correct our own ailing.
You said you are old and your race is soon over,
Don’t give in too soon to be pushing up clover.
Some are careless, disregard and throw away,
But others come after to halt, hunt and save.
Thankfully, the natural world will be,
Rich here forever, with insights to see.
Bobby Hedge, 2007
For God, you know, the Eternal, who wrote,
“While earth remains, seedtime, harvest, cold and heat,
Summer and winter, day and night shall not cease.”
There will always be folks who eagerly yearn,
About herbs, roots and twigs, and what we can learn.
Forest Service recreation areas open for use
WINCHESTER – The Cave Run Lake campgrounds, Twin
Knobs and Zilpo, opened on Friday, March 16. The campgrounds
at Laurel River Lake will open on April 13.
Stretching across 21 counties of southern and eastern Kentucky,
the Daniel Boone National Forest provides more than 100
developed recreation sites, including campgrounds, boat ramps,
picnic areas and shooting ranges.
Nearly 600 miles of trail are developed for multiple users.
Hikers, horseback riders and bicyclists are among those who
enjoy getting back to nature along quiet, non-motorized trails.
For off-highway vehicle enthusiasts, several trails are designated
for motorized use.
If wildlife viewing and seclusion are your preference, the
national forest offers two wilderness areas in some of Kentucky’s
most rugged terrain. The Beaver Creek Wilderness in
McCreary County and the Clifty Wilderness in the Red River
Gorge provide scenic beauty and adventure in remote settings.
No motorized vehicles or mechanized equipment are allowed
within wilderness boundaries.
Five wildlife management areas offer hunters a place to
find their favorite game. The forest is open to hunting except in
developed recreation areas or near roads and trails. All hunters
must have a valid Kentucky hunting license and adhere to state
hunting regulations.
For canoeing, rafting or kayaking, the rivers that flow
through the Daniel Boone National Forest can likely match any
expectations. The skilled thrill-seekers can find whitewater
challenge along the upper sections of Red River and the lower
sections of the Rockcastle and Cumberland River. The inexperienced
paddlers should seek more gentle stretches of river, which
provide for more leisure time traveling downstream.
A fee is charged at some developed recreation areas. These
fees are used to maintain and upgrade facilities where the
charges occur.
A fee permit is required to use some boat ramps and motorized
trails. A permit is also required for backcountry camping in
the Red River Gorge. The permits may be purchased from local
vendors and at Forest Service office locations.
Children Can’t Be Children Today
Talks of war,
Locks on the door.
People filled with anger
Streets filled with danger.
How can our children survive?
They have to be prisoners to stay alive.
Schools filled with the dangers of drugs
And sometimes beatings from thugs.
They take a chance just to go out and play,
Children can’t be children today.
Entertainment is filled with crime,
Anything to make a dime.
Parents cry and wonder what to do,
Well, listen and I’ll tell you.
Don’t subject your child to this anymore,
Take him from home to the church next door.
There he will find the way and the love of God,
And the strength he needs today.
Grass Tetany Season underway
Right about now is the prime time for grass tetany in our
beef cattle. Grass tetany is simply a deficiency of magnesium
in the blood stream of brood cows. As grass is growing
quickly at this time, it’s also low in nutrition and full of water.
This disorder also can attack animals grazing covercrops or
pastures inter-seeded with rye or wheat. This disorder usually
attacks the heaviest milkers or best mamma cows in the herd, it
does not affect bulls steers calves or heifers. It also usually affects
farmers who are doing a good job of liming and fertilizing
pastures, especially those good managers who are following a
controlled breeding season. Basically this disorder affects the
best cows on the best farms.
Symptoms of grass tetany include rapid, labored breathing,
staggering and eventually the animal will go down. Animals
may seem irritated and may actually become aggressive.
At this point a veterinarian should be called immediately.
Grass tetany can be avoided by prevention, primarily by making
sure all cows in the herd are being fed high magnesium
blocks or ground corn mixed with loose mineral. Farmers
should make every attempt to make sure all the adult cows
in the herd is getting an ample supply of magnesium through
loose mineral or salt/mineral blocks containing magnesium. It
is important to start this early in the season to avoid this problem
in April. Prevention of this problem is a lot easier than the
cure. Be on the look-out for this problem as it happens fast and
is most always deadly.
Contact the Powell County Extension Office at 663-6405 if
you need additional information.
Life in China ...
By Howie Sherrard, Formerly of Irvine
It’s now April, and I need to catch everyone up on the continuing
adventures of the Sherrard family in China. In February,
Sam and Mary started classes in a Chinese public school which
only speaks Mandarin and Jake turned 2. In March, Mary turned
6. She has lost her two front teeth on the top and the bottom, so
whistling and eating have become a real challenge for her. She
has a great attitude though, as losing teeth is her primary source
of income. That is the economics of a six year old.
I’ve been really impressed by Sam and Mary, because they
have met a seemingly impossible challenge with a great deal of
courage and grace. Mary was supposed to start kindergarten
in August. Outside of Sunday school, she has never had any
formal schooling. Sam, on the other hand, got the privilege of
head start and kindergarten. He was supposed to be in 1st grade
this year. Before we came to China, we were told our children
would be welcomed with open arms by the school but that was
hardly the case. In fact, they were not allowed to attend in the
beginning. However by the end of last year, they were allowed
to attend PE, Art, English, and Music classes. Picking them up
and dropping them off at various times throughout the day was
a nightmare. Worse, they were only allowed to be in the 2nd
grade.
Sam and Mary are pictured with public school
Kung Fu teacher.
Since there behavior proved acceptable, and they wanted to
attend full time this semester, the school finally let them in. We
also convinced them to switch Mary to the 1st grade. Both Sam
and Mary sit in the very back of their classes – which is funny
as Mary is so small. The principal was concerned about their
grades, but we explained that we really didn’t care about their
grades, and that our only expectation for Mary is that she learns
how to sit and be quiet which has been a challenge. Sam has
adjusted better, but they both seem to make the best of every
situation. The Chinese educational system is very rigorous, so
no one needs to worry about Sam and Mary falling behind. In
fact, I rather regret that they can’t take better advantage of the
opportunity they have.
To a large degree we are still homeschooling, as we teach
them at night and whenever we can. They do their homework in
class when they can’t follow the teacher. The teachers communicate
with us by writing notes to us in notebooks the children carry
home with them each day. In turn, we have to find someone
(usually a student) to translate the notes for us. Sam is having a
boredom and wanting to compete. It is amazing though that
Sam and Mary get along as well as they do since being different
is still the last thing you want to be in a public school. They are
very attractive and friendly which helps.
I used to remorse about sending my kids into an atheistic
school system, but alas, I’m sending them to the most atheistic
and communistic school system on the planet. I comfort myself
with this thought – my kids can’t understand a single word.
What they are learning instead is why they should be kind to
foreigners. They are learning that children from other countries
are just like them in many ways. They are learning that people
in the world have different currencies, different languages, different
cultures, and different religions, but similar needs, wants,
and feelings.
My children like going to the Mountain Mushroom Festival
with Granny and
Pappaw, and that is one
of the many small sacrifices
they have to make.
We’ve eaten nearly every
kind of mushroom
over here, but I’ve not
seen a morel. In closing,
I was informed that my
elementary school music
teacher, Mrs. Rhoda
Ann Higginbotham,
passed away recently. I
wish I could have said
“thank you” to her in
person. She was always
special to me because
she taught me to avoid
living a life characterized
by apathy.
Something you won’t see at
the Mushroom Festival....
Fried Locusts.
I’ll never forget when she “blew up” one day and wrote
A-P-A-T-H-Y on the board and rightly criticized our behavior
in her class. I always thought that she would be proud to know
that message stuck with me for all these years and that I now
teach my students the danger of falling into apathy in their work
and studies. She also taught me the following song (I wonder
how many of my classmates can remember it).
Love is something if you give it away, give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away; you end up having more.
It’s just like a magic penny. Hold it tight and you won’t have any.
Lend it and spend it and you’ll have so many; they’ll roll all over the floor.
For love is something if you give it away, give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away, you end up having more.
Here’s to a real hometown hero we shall all miss (until we
meet again)!
Stalking The Wild Mushroom
By Jerry Ison of Slade, Kentucky
Some mushroom hunters guard their secret mushroom
patches more closely than the government secures Area 51
“Hey, Virgil! How much farther do we have to go ?” I’m gettin’
winded!”
“Heck you’re thirty years younger ‘n me! You oughta be able
to keep up with an old man! It’s only ‘bout another mile or so.
Just over that ridge, then a little ways on.”
The way Virgil had led me out here into the back country
of Anderson County, one may have thought we were on an illegal
mission. He first had me drive away from our destination for
several miles then circle back the long, or should I say the longest
way around. We then parked the car off the road in as secluded
an area as was available. We
had taken my car because Virgil “ ‘spected none of them rascals”
he was avoiding would recognize it. Leaving the car we entered
the brush, and after several hundred yards, circled back until we
again crossed the road and finally, towards the secret place.
No, we weren’t checking on a gold deposit, nor were on
some dark covert operation for a shadowy agency. We were
going to Vigil’s perennial mushroom patch. That’s right, wild
mushrooms, morels.
Every spring hundreds of folks who know, head out into the
woods and along the streams, open areas, wherever they suspect
these delicious and elusive fungi may grow. The morel is sometimes
known as the sponge mushroom or, possibly because of it’s
delicate flavor, the “dry-land fish”. There are at least four varieties,
all edible and all delicious.
There are several mushrooms that resemble the morel but
the true morels are indeed the best known and most sought after
edible fungi. All the species of morel fruit in the Spring and all are
delicious. The scientific name for this family of fungi is Morchella. The
scientific name for this plant gives away the fact that these
mushrooms are indeed highly regarded. The most sought after
and most highly prized morels is the Morchella deliciousa. I’m
not making that up. That is the name learned scientists have given
this elusive fungi.
A plateful of morel mushrooms. Found in a secret spot, of course!
The only place this plant can be found is in the wild. While many
attempts have been made to produce the mushroom commercially,
and spores have been successfully germinated, no one has
succeeded so far. For that reason, whenever these rare treats appear
on a restaurant menu, they command a very high price - ten
to twenty times that of the best steak, ounce for ounce.
These fungi fruit for a brief period in the Spring and in areas
that seemingly are disparate. When one is found, however, there
are usually numerous others in the immediate area. They also
tend to reappear in the same location year after year, the reason
secret ‘shroom plots are so jealously guarded.
Just ahead, I heard Virgil let out a loud curse. Followed be a
stream of invectives and then a tone of resignation.
“Well I’ll be danged! Looks like some low down dirty dawg
has done beat us to the ‘shrooms! See where they stirred up the
leaves and such.”
“How do you suppose anyone was able to find your secret
path after all the precautions you take, Virgil?”
“Well, I reckon they done it same way I did, follered somebody
what knew for four or five seasons, how else?”
Giving Up Secrets
Unlike Virgil and others of the same ilk, and because I’m
such a nice guy, I intend to share the location of two of my most
secret, and most productive ‘shroom patches. Being the eternal
optimist, I visited one this weekend. I knew going out the morels
wouldn’t be up yet, but the weather was great and it was as good
an excuse as any to get out. Sure enough, there were no morels,
but the bloodroot was in full bloom. I also spotted some Spring
beauties, trout lilies (not in bloom yet) and mayapples just emerging.
The light was poor where the mayapple was just pushing
through and they do look a lot like slightly green morels at that
stage and well.. I have to admit, it was me that killed all those
baby mayapples! I’m sorry.
Anyway now comes the good part - I’m going to tell you just
where may two best plots are. The one most productive is just
west of Hope a few miles and right off route 713. You’ll know
the place, there’s a barn fairly close by and you pass a couple
white house and some fences. OK, the other really good spot is,
are you ready? Just into five or six miles into Lee County near the
intersection of 587 and 399. Or was that just up the road a piece
from St. Helens on the left side of Rt 52?. Okay, maybe the right
side. Depends on which way you’re a goin’ and I have no way of
knowing that!
There you have it, the locations of my long-guarded secret
difficult time with some of the children in his class because they and pray for the people we are meeting so we can bring back
36 encourage his bad behavior. I’m sure part of this comes from good reports.
morel plots. Enjoy!
