O<strong>the</strong>r bus<strong>in</strong>esses that use Esl<strong>in</strong>e’s services <strong>in</strong>clude beauty<br />

salons, hairdressers, ni-Vanuatu, and tourists <strong>in</strong> town. When<br />

she bought <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>the</strong>re had been an established<br />

clientele that she reta<strong>in</strong>ed, but she expanded <strong>the</strong> list by<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g door to door to recruit more customers.<br />

A typical day <strong>for</strong> Esl<strong>in</strong>e consists of reconcil<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bills and<br />

accounts from her small office at home. She <strong>the</strong>n goes <strong>in</strong><br />

to EzyWash once or twice a day <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g or at lunch<br />

to organize deliveries or provide extra supplies like wash<strong>in</strong>g<br />

powder, and she is often <strong>the</strong> last one <strong>the</strong>re be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong><br />

establishment closes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> Growth: Obstacles and <strong>Opportunities</strong><br />

The search <strong>for</strong> adequate technical support <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> upkeep<br />

and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of her equipment is an ongo<strong>in</strong>g challenge<br />

<strong>for</strong> Esl<strong>in</strong>e. “The lack of technical support <strong>in</strong> Port Vila to help<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> and fix my mach<strong>in</strong>es makes bus<strong>in</strong>ess harder,” says<br />

Esl<strong>in</strong>e. Currently, Esl<strong>in</strong>e deals with this problem by scour<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternet to source spare parts as well as import<strong>in</strong>g parts<br />

via contacts <strong>in</strong> Brisbane and New Zealand.<br />

“I have to import all new mach<strong>in</strong>es and all spare parts,” she<br />

says. “The key problem <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong> is gett<strong>in</strong>g technical<br />

support to fix electrical goods. Even though my husband is<br />

a very handy man and would normally be able to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />

equipment, he has difficulties too –with his job as an<br />

aircraft eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g manager, he does not have a lot of<br />

spare time.”<br />

Esl<strong>in</strong>e feels that men more often than women are taught<br />

<strong>the</strong> practical knowledge of fix<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es, an area she<br />

admits she is generally less familiar with. She adds, “I just<br />

don’t have enough time or <strong>in</strong>terest – after runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess – to also fix all <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>es.”<br />

For example, Esl<strong>in</strong>e purchased a second hand roller mach<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong> late 2008. With duty and freight from Australia, <strong>the</strong><br />

mach<strong>in</strong>es cost AUD $10,000. “But <strong>the</strong>y are sitt<strong>in</strong>g unused<br />

because I need <strong>the</strong> technical expertise to <strong>in</strong>stall <strong>the</strong>m. There<br />

is also a need <strong>for</strong> a backup service as at <strong>the</strong> moment <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is nobody <strong>in</strong> Port Vila that can provide that service” she<br />

says.<br />

A bigger mach<strong>in</strong>e she bought from Australia – brand<br />

new – wasn’t <strong>in</strong>stalled properly ei<strong>the</strong>r. “So <strong>for</strong> two years<br />

I haven’t been able to use it. I even went to Australia and<br />

met with <strong>the</strong> supplier. He spoke directly with my husband<br />

to coord<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> set-up, but it’s still not work<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />

She has also bought a roller mach<strong>in</strong>e second hand, “but<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is no backup service and it is broken. Nobody <strong>in</strong> Port<br />

Vila can provide that service.”<br />

Nad<strong>in</strong>e Ha<strong>in</strong>es<br />

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Name: Air and Ice Solutions<br />

Country: Vanuatu<br />

Like Esl<strong>in</strong>e, Nad<strong>in</strong>e Ha<strong>in</strong>es key challenges have been<br />

<strong>the</strong> technical aspects of her bus<strong>in</strong>ess, Air and Ice<br />

Solutions, and employ<strong>in</strong>g workers.<br />

Reflect<strong>in</strong>g on her first few days <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air-condition<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess, Nad<strong>in</strong>e Ha<strong>in</strong>es admits that she knew little<br />

about runn<strong>in</strong>g a bus<strong>in</strong>ess on her own. “I started<br />

with noth<strong>in</strong>g. I didn’t know anyth<strong>in</strong>g about air<br />

condition<strong>in</strong>g,” she says. “Now, be<strong>in</strong>g my own boss, I<br />

do everyth<strong>in</strong>g by myself – all quotations, market<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>in</strong>voic<strong>in</strong>g, and manag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> boys. My bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

handles three to five jobs per day. It is quite a heavy<br />

workload.”<br />

Nad<strong>in</strong>e Ha<strong>in</strong>es established Air and Ice Solutions, an<br />

air-condition<strong>in</strong>g, refrigeration and electrical firm, <strong>in</strong><br />

June 2006. Through this bus<strong>in</strong>ess, Nad<strong>in</strong>e provides<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallation, breakdown repair and servic<strong>in</strong>g of air<br />

conditioners, refrigeration and electrical services. Her<br />

five employees are mostly electricians servic<strong>in</strong>g a range<br />

of different clients, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a 12-month servic<strong>in</strong>g<br />

contract with Iririki Island Resort.<br />

Nad<strong>in</strong>e has made a conscious decision to only hire<br />

Ni-Vanuatu staff and has been <strong>in</strong> contact with some of<br />

<strong>the</strong> local tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g providers to ensure that she can tap<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir pool of talent. In Port Vila <strong>the</strong>re are 12 o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

firms <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same market, mak<strong>in</strong>g it very competitive.
