On reflect<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> challenges of be<strong>in</strong>g a woman <strong>in</strong><br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess, Dhan says “It’s very hard to persuade Indo-Fijian<br />
women to open a bus<strong>in</strong>ess now. They all want to work<br />
<strong>for</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r employers than <strong>the</strong> family bus<strong>in</strong>ess, or stay at<br />
home, or do charity work. <strong>Women</strong> who do have <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>esses don’t want it. But you can do everyth<strong>in</strong>g. I do<br />
everyth<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />
“They don’t take an active part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own family bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
Husbands will give <strong>the</strong>ir wives money anyway so <strong>the</strong>y don’t<br />
work. Their husbands will pay <strong>the</strong>ir staff, but <strong>the</strong>y don’t<br />
want <strong>the</strong>ir wives <strong>in</strong>volved, and <strong>the</strong>y may not pay <strong>the</strong>m. I tell<br />
<strong>the</strong> women that <strong>the</strong>y should be <strong>in</strong>volved.” Their reply to<br />
me is, “You’re <strong>the</strong> only woman who is do<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong><br />
your community.”<br />
Dhan th<strong>in</strong>ks that although <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r women admire her,<br />
she doesn’t <strong>in</strong>spire <strong>the</strong>m to get <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir family<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>esses. They like to stay at home and be a domestic<br />
housewife. She says that <strong>in</strong>digenous Fijian women are<br />
different and will earn <strong>the</strong>ir liv<strong>in</strong>g by runn<strong>in</strong>g small<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>esses.<br />
Dhan cont<strong>in</strong>ues to advise o<strong>the</strong>r women, “Try to open your<br />
own bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Be on your own feet ra<strong>the</strong>r than depend<br />
on someone else. Young women have so much potential,<br />
but <strong>the</strong>y are held back. They like to work <strong>for</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r people,<br />
ra<strong>the</strong>r than run <strong>the</strong>ir own bus<strong>in</strong>ess or be <strong>in</strong>volved with <strong>the</strong><br />
family bus<strong>in</strong>ess. I feel so sad; <strong>the</strong> Indo-Fijian families don’t<br />
want <strong>the</strong>ir wives to work. Men won’t even make payments<br />
to <strong>the</strong> pension fund <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir wives. They don’t give <strong>the</strong>m<br />
wages. No wonder <strong>the</strong> women don’t want to work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
family bus<strong>in</strong>ess.”<br />
<strong>Economic</strong> <strong>Opportunities</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong><br />
Next Steps Dhan’s plans <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess are to make<br />
Dick Smith Electronics grow <strong>in</strong> market share and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />
itself as a lead<strong>in</strong>g market shareholder. In <strong>the</strong> next 5 years,<br />
she plans to expand <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess’s retail and service<br />
departments to Lautoka, Nadi and Labasa, expand its<br />
back up service department at <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> store <strong>in</strong> Suva, and<br />
appo<strong>in</strong>t a CEO <strong>for</strong> operations management so that <strong>the</strong><br />
Directors can focus on bus<strong>in</strong>ess growth strategies.<br />
Mov<strong>in</strong>g a bus<strong>in</strong>ess towards expansion and higher levels<br />
of achievement is a challenge. Especially as <strong>the</strong> global<br />
economy has had a hard hit. Fiji is not spared from this<br />
impact. Major bus<strong>in</strong>ess clients such as government<br />
departments and larger corporate companies have reduced<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir purchases due to budget constra<strong>in</strong>ts. However we<br />
are optimistic of improved growth as <strong>the</strong> global economic<br />
activities normalize. The current Fiji Government is striv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to stimulate local bus<strong>in</strong>ess and attract more visitors to Fiji.<br />
We can see positive signs of change <strong>for</strong> better days ahead.<br />
Dick Smith rema<strong>in</strong>s committed to its growth and expansion<br />
strategies.<br />
