More licenses this year; nice weather greets hunters
Opening weekend of the 2008
deer-gun season in Wisconsin
produced good weather conditions
in the Stateline area, but
the perfect snow came a day late.
The registration stations I contacted
reported a mixed bag of
results. Most said the season got
off to an average start. In
Jefferson County, the average
doe-to-buck ratio was about 7-to-
1. In Janesville, there were relatively
few registrations opening
morning, but colder temperatures
this year had many folks
hanging deer early on, and then
taking them in later in the day.
In recent past years, warm
weather and rain made it imperative
to get the deer registered
and processed the same day.
The real buzz around the registration
stations related to the
Earn-A-Buck requirement, and
feedback was very unkind to say
the least. Some hunters said
they saw three or four really nice
bucks, but no doe in sight to
shoot first.
As of opening morning,
595,926 resident licenses were
sold; 35,297 went to nonresidents.
Overall, the number of
licenses — about 835,000 — is
up slightly from 2007 when you
factor in the bow season. There
even were nonresident licenses
sold to folks from foreign countries.
Breaking down nonresident
sales, Minnesota led the pack
with 16,631, followed by Illinois
at 8,910, Michigan at 1,102 and
snowbirds from Florida at 985.
Dane County leads the state in
license sales at 28,318. Some
132,000 antlerless tags have
been sold so far.
I’m sure even more licenses
will be sold, since you can purchase
them throughout the season.
There are several additional
seasons as well, like late bow,
muzzleloader, December and holiday
hunts.
Remember, the state
Department of Natural
Resources Customer Call Center
is open every day from 7 a.m. to
10 p.m.. The toll-free number is
(888) 936-7463. The Friday
before the opener, the center
received more than 2,000 calls.
Prior to that, it fielded 1,200 to
1,400 per day. The DNR takes
calls on everything from hunting,
fishing, boating, ATVs, and all
rules and regulations.
I have the number programmed
in my cell phone, and
apparently a savvy lady hunter
did too. DNR officials said the
center received a call from a
nervous, whispering female
hunter who said, “I have an albino
deer in my sights right now.
Is it legal for me to shoot?” The
answer is yes, but only in the
chronic wasting disease zone.
Otherwise, it’s illegal to shoot an
albino deer.
Each year, after the harvest
has begun, I get requests for my
corned-venison recipe. For a 3- to
4-pound roast, use 4 cups of
water or enough to cover, 1 cup
Tender Quick pickling salt, 1
tablespoon pickling spices, 1
medium onion chopped. Use a
crock pot for the entire process.
Mix the salt and water, pat the
spices and chopped onion onto
the roast. Refrigerate 24 hours,
making sure the meat is under
the liquid. Remove from the pot,
rinse well under cold water.
Rinse the pot and don’t add any
liquid. Cook the roast until tender.
The meat will have the same
orange tint as corned beef.
