Winter driving tips offered AAA Wisconsin and area police agencies hope to remind Wisconsin motorists of some important winter driving and survival tips following the area’s first accumulating snowfall of the season this past week. Drivers should anticipate dangers, including ice on bridges, hidden lane markings, stalled cars and poor visibility. Drivers should use proper winter braking techniques. For cars without anti-lock brakes, use “squeeze” braking by applying the brakes just short of lock-up, then easing off the brake pedal slightly. For vehicles with antilock brakes, continuous, firm braking is necessary. Drivers also should avoid skids by easing off the accelerator and not locking up the brakes. In a skid, carefully steer in the direction you want your vehicle to go and straighten the wheel as soon as the car begins to go in the desired direction. “During the winter months, it’s important for everyone to monitor the weather forecasts that may affect their driving plans,” AAA Wisconsin Regional President Tom Frymark said in a news release. If you become stranded in the winter, AAA advises that it is usually best to stay with your vehicle rather than risk exposure or becoming lost while seeking help. In these cases, a winter survival kit could save your life. AAA recommends all motorists carry survival gear, a charged cell phone and tire traction material like sand or cat litter in their vehicles during the winter months. Walworth County Sunday Sunday, November 30, 2008 7A IN THE NEWS Zoning changes, tech park approved WHITEWATER — The Whitewater City Council on Nov. 18 unanimously approved rezoning 36 parcels near the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus from single-family to multiplefamily residences. The change allows up to five unrelated people to live in a single residence. The neighborhood largely is made up of university students, most of whom rent homes. The affected properties are on Tratt, Florence and Prince streets on the west side of the campus. The council also unanimously approved an agreement to form a UW-Whitewater Technology Park and a sevenmember board of directors, made up of university and city officials, to oversee it. UW-Whitewater Chancellor Richard Telfer said the project will be a hub for start-up companies and other research. Man charged for making ‘inappropriate advances’ ELKHORN — A Lake Geneva man is charged with felony child enticement and felony false imprisonment after allegedly making “inappropriate advances” toward a 12-yearold girl. According to a criminal complaint, Diego Sarmiento, 53, of 1271 Wisconsin St. Apt. C, asked the girl to watch his cat while he went out of town. When she entered his apartment to see where the cat supplies were kept, Sarmiento allegedly asked the girl for a hug and kiss. She refused, unlocked the door and left his apartment. As she left, Sarmiento allegedly asked the girl an inappropriate question about her body, something the girl told police he previously had asked, allegedly adding, “I will wait for you.” The girl’s grandma called police. When officers asked why Sarmiento tried to kiss the girl, the complaint states he answered, “Because I desire her,” and also said he knew it was wrong to take pictures of the girl going to the laundry room “almost naked.” If convicted on both counts, he faces up to 31 years in prison and a $110,000 fine. According to a criminal complaint, Lake Geneva police were called to the Wesley Inn at 2:59 a.m. Nov. 9, following a report of an “unwanted male.” Officers found Daniel Lininger, 26, who appeared very intoxicated, trying to open a hotel-room door. After Lininger was taken to the Lake Geneva Police Department, he allegedly began to yell, curse and had to be physically directed to sit down on a bench. While at the hospital, Lininger escaped. The complaint says police found him at a nearby residence on Maclean Road, after the homeowner reported a handcuffed person banging on a door. Lininger also faces a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct. If convicted of both charges, he faces a maximum of six years and 90 days in prison and an $11,000 fine.
