Living PICTURES DAN AN PLUTCHAK LUTCHAK ASSOCIATE EDITOR SIGHTS AND SCENES FROM WALWORTH COUNTY A simple gift, woven by many hands EAST TROY — Although they may be the only gift their recipients receive this Christmas, they’re the kind of present no amount of money can buy. For the ninth year, East Troy Basketry is helping volunteers create unique holiday gifts, called Baskets of Love. “I was a nurse for 30 years,” said Eileen Mirsberger, owner of a shop just off the square in downtown East Troy. “So, when I started, I thought of older people.” This year, Mirsberger says they will make about 350 baskets, which will go to every Meals on Wheels participant in Walworth County, as well as some in Racine, Kenosha and Waukesha counties. East Troy Basketry donated the weaving supplies, and the bases were donated by Home Depot of Lake Geneva, Dr. Robert Dillman and Don Henry. The completed bas- MIRSBERGER IRSBERGER kets are filled with donated items, as well — everything from handmade gift items from local scouting groups to candy and stamps. They also accept cash donations that they’ll use to buy additional items for the baskets. It turns out that there is no typical basket weaver. On a recent weeknight, instructor Karen Kotecki explained the fine points of basketry to two volunteer weavers. By day, Kotecki is an attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee who represents people with mental disabilities. One of her students was Lisa Vint of East Troy who, among other things, is a hall-offame bowler and publisher of the Windy City Bowling News The other was Debbie Stopar of Mukwonago, who isn’t currently working and thought it would be a fun way to do something good while learning a new skill. Mirsberger says people will drive for hours to come and help weave baskets. “People love an opportunity to do something for somebody else,” she said. Some help make baskets for weeks leading up to the holidays, while others make just one basket a year, Mirsberger says. The baskets are simple in design, and Mirsberger creates a new one each year. This year’s basket is oval, with red and green ribbon woven into the sides and set off with a bright holiday bow. Dec. 17 is the day when volunteers spread out the hundreds of baskets, filling them and getting them ready for delivery. The baskets the are delivered to the Meals on Wheels distribution sites in time for Christmas.
