All the officials who responded were satisfied with the duration of time for rest given to the<br />
<strong>in</strong>mates. Most of the <strong>in</strong>mates (51 out of 57) also expressed satisfaction with the duration of<br />
time they received for tak<strong>in</strong>g rest.<br />
Five out of the n<strong>in</strong>e officials who responded expressed dissatisfaction regard<strong>in</strong>g the quality<br />
of food provided for the <strong>in</strong>mates. Surpris<strong>in</strong>gly, the majority of the <strong>in</strong>mates who gave their<br />
op<strong>in</strong>ions (45 out of 57) were satisfied with the food they were given <strong>in</strong> the M<strong>and</strong>irs. In the<br />
case of the other physical facilities also (safety of the build<strong>in</strong>g, dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water, bed for<br />
sleep<strong>in</strong>g), nearly three-fourths of them were satisfied.<br />
While all the officials expressed satisfaction about the way they catered to the <strong>psycho</strong>logical<br />
needs (love, consideration, personal security, freedom of expression, dignity <strong>and</strong><br />
communication) of the <strong>in</strong>mates, more than 70 percent of the <strong>in</strong>mates reported satisfaction<br />
with the treatment meted out to them by the officials.<br />
The officials were of the unanimous view that adequate freedom was be<strong>in</strong>g given to the<br />
<strong>in</strong>mates for us<strong>in</strong>g their <strong>in</strong>come, pursu<strong>in</strong>g their religious practices, discuss<strong>in</strong>g their needs, <strong>and</strong><br />
for meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> present<strong>in</strong>g their grievances to higher officials. Not all <strong>in</strong>mates did, however,<br />
concur with this view. There were a sizeable number of them, rang<strong>in</strong>g from 18 to 28 percent,<br />
who were dissatisfied with the freedom they were allowed <strong>in</strong> these respects by the officials<br />
<strong>in</strong> charge of the M<strong>and</strong>irs.<br />
However, <strong>in</strong> the case of all the items under social needs (items 13 to 35), the majority of the<br />
<strong>in</strong>mates expressed satisfaction.<br />
Though some of the officials <strong>and</strong> the <strong>in</strong>mates expressed dissatisfaction with the provisions<br />
<strong>in</strong> the M<strong>and</strong>irs for satisfy<strong>in</strong>g the physical <strong>and</strong> <strong>psycho</strong>-social needs of the <strong>in</strong>mates, the majority<br />
<strong>in</strong> both the groups reported satisfaction. These f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs were found to be contradictory to<br />
the statements <strong>and</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ions given by the higher authorities of the Social Welfare Department.<br />
It is hoped that the results of the present study would be of help to br<strong>in</strong>g changes <strong>in</strong> the<br />
prejudice of scholars, the higher echelons of the officialdom <strong>and</strong> the general public aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
<strong>in</strong>mates of the Mahila M<strong>and</strong>irs.<br />
The study attempted to f<strong>in</strong>d out the reasons why the <strong>in</strong>mates ended up <strong>in</strong> the Mahila M<strong>and</strong>irs.<br />
The reasons reported by the <strong>in</strong>mates are given <strong>in</strong> Table 3.7 <strong>in</strong> the order of importance.<br />
