FUN FACTS Our fi nal event of the year, Fall Carlisle, also means the fi nal batch of Carlisle “Fun Facts.” Starting with Spring Carlisle you’ve been treated to information that’s been compiled by Carlisle Events Facilities Director Tim Bowman and his staff . Some of this information will make you laugh. Some of it will leave you scratching your head and some of it will have you wondering why or how someone even keeps track of such facts. We hope you enjoy them. FACT 12: We deliver a lot of tables and chairs to customers and vendors during a show weekend. The totals vary based on the show, but the fact is, it happens frequently. During one particular show a few years back, our table truck logged 69 miles in a single day, and all it did was deliver tables and chairs on grounds. FACT 11: Nearly 1,400 big feet and signboards are used on grounds at specialty shows to give directions and designate showfi eld classes. If you’ve ever thought the grounds aren’t properly marked, think again. FACT 10: You get a goody bag if you’ve registered for the showfi eld. This is the case for most events at Carlisle and our newest event at Bloomsburg. Have you ever wondered how many are given out in a year? From start to fi nish, nearly 14,500 goody bags are stuff ed by part-time staff ers, working weeks in advance of an event. FACT 9: Overall, Carlisle runs a minimum of 134 temporary electric panels. To make those panels work, it takes an additional 15,305 feet of 60-amp power cord. Monetarily speaking, it costs about $856 per 100-foot piece of cord, and Carlisle has about 36 cords ranging from 20 feet to 300 feet. FACT 8: Over 1,000 large parcels come to our receiving area annually, and another 267 skids are received, logged and then delivered to vendors. Not too bad for a group of mail and package delivery amateurs. FACT 7: Within our fence line, there are 82 acres of ground and in total; maintenance is responsible for 150 acres. Though not all aspects of the property have grass on them, it’s fair to say that at least half is green. To that, nearly 864 hours are spent each season mowing and maintaining the grass. Those 864 hours translate to 21½ days of mowing time. Do you even mow your yard 21 times all year? FACT 6: Yellow caution tape — you see it at crime scenes, construction sites, condemned buildings and more. You also see a lot of it at Carlisle. We use it to re- 60 2012 FALL CARLISLE CarlisleEvents.com serve certain areas of the grounds for special displays, designate areas to avoid and in general, to give you a notifi cation that your body should not be within the taped-off area. In doing so, over the course of a season, about 40,000 feet of the stuff is used. 40,000 feet translates to about 7.6 miles. FACT 5: We use a lot of temporary fencing to stage events. From the swap meet and car corral areas to autocross, monster trucks and on the showfi eld itself, the fencing end to end covers approximately 10 miles. The maintenance staff hammers in at least 3,520 fence posts — possibly more. From Carlisle, 10 miles isn’t far, but it’s far enough to get from one side of the Carlisle Borough to another (and back). You could also drive to Mechanicsburg, walk the Appalachian Trail from Whiskey Springs Road to Boiling Springs, or if you are up for some additional exercise, run 40 laps around your local high school track. FACT 4: It is estimated that over the course of a season, 1,832,220 feet of toilet paper is used. With 5,280 feet in a mile, this translates to just over 347 miles worth of tushy tissue. From the fairgrounds you can travel to the following major locations by rolling out a season’s worth of TP: Boston to the north, Detroit to the west, Winston-Salem to the south, well out into the Atlantic Ocean to the east, most of the Susquehanna River (464 miles/New York to Maryland), and within 374 miles you can make your way into outer space. FACT 3: Paper towels are good for cleaning oil off your dipstick, drying your hands or using as a napkin in a pinch. Paper towels have many practical and impractical uses, but mostly they’re an important component to keeping you clean and sanitary. With 10 events at Carlisle, an estimated 595,000 feet of paper towels are used. That equates to nearly 113 miles. That is greater than the driving distance from Carlisle to the following: Annapolis, MD, and Harrisburg, PA (two state capitol buildings); Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love; both Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, PA; and York, PA. FACT 2: To fi ll those nearly 600 blue trash barrels, more than 39,500 50-gallon trash bags are used. That means at least 1,975,000 gallons of trash are collected between April and October. FACT 1: Over the course of a season, more than 311 tons — 622,000 pounds — of trash is extracted from the hundreds of blue trash barrels. This total does not include batteries, liquids, tires and metal. That’s it for “Fun Facts” in 2012. Each event magazine is available online at www.CarlisleEvents.com.
