ONE OF SIX BUILT FOR THE SAME COMPANY AT BULL HEAD DOCK<br />

BETWEEN OCTOBER 1848 AND DECEMBER 1849.<br />

NOT MANY THAMES SHIPYARDS BUILT RAILWAY ENGINES, BUT BULL<br />

HEAD WAS CONVERTED TO A GENERAL ENGINEERING WORKS BY JOHN<br />

HAGUE IN 1838. BY MAY 1847, THE YARD WAS OCCUPIED BY CHRISTIE,<br />

ADAMS AND HILL, TRADING AS THE THAMES BANK IRONWORKS.<br />

THIS WAS THE TAIL END OF A PERIOD KNOWN AS "THE RAILWAY MANIA",<br />

WHEN SO MANY NEW LINES WERE OPENING THAT THE ESTABLISHED<br />

LOCOMOTIVE MANUFACTURERS COULD NOT COPE WITH THE ORDERS<br />

ON OFFER. MANY SMALL ENGINEERING WORKS TURNED OUT A HANDFUL<br />

OF RAILWAY ENGINES, WITH VARYING DEGREES OF SUCCESS.<br />

THE BULL HEAD DOCK MACHINES WERE AMONGST THE BETTER<br />

BARGAINS, LASTING IN SERVICE FOR ABOUT TWENTY YEARS. THERE<br />

BEING NO RAIL CONNECTION, FROME AND HER SISTERS WOULD HAVE<br />

BEEN LOADED ONTO LIGHTERS, AND TAKEN UP RIVER TO THE RAILWAY<br />

COMPANY'S WHARF AT NINE ELMS.
