The term "proactive fire protection" is used to describe products<br />

and systems which become part of the construction of a building.<br />

These products and systems are tested by independently<br />

approved testing authorities under standard testing conditions.<br />

They are designed to protect the building structure, to restrict<br />

1.2 FIRE TEST STANDARDS - Test on Materials<br />

The standard most commonly referred to in <strong>Building</strong> Codes by<br />

most Asian countries and Hong Kong is the British Standard<br />

(BS 476).<br />

BS 476: Part 4: 1970<br />

Non-combustibility test for materials.<br />

This test classifies materials as either "non-combustible" or<br />

"combustible". It is the most stringent standard for testing the<br />

fire resistance of materials and gives a measure of the heat<br />

and flames generated by the material under standard heating<br />

conditions.<br />

Non-combustible materials can be used without restriction<br />

anywhere in a building. Their use ensures that hazards due to<br />

smoke and toxic gases are minimized and that the fabric of a<br />

1.3 FIRE TEST STANDARDS - Test on Construction of Systems<br />

Fire Testing Method<br />

The fire resistance of a system will vary according to the heating<br />

conditions it is exposed to. The fire curve adopted by the British<br />

Standards Institute to simulate fires in tests is called the<br />

Cellulosic Time-Temperature Curve (see graph). This curve is<br />

used in standards throughout the world as a model of a ventilated<br />

controlled natural fire, i.e. fires in a normal building.<br />

Under the British Standard, the system under test is<br />

progressively heated in an accurately controlled furnace, the<br />

temperature of which varies with time as closely as possible to<br />

the Cellulosic Time-Temperature Curve. The heat evolved is<br />

not necessarily that which is produced in a true fire situation,<br />

but is an agreed standard for purposes of comparison. According<br />

to the graph, the temperature of the furnace is increased to<br />

822°C after 30 minutes, to 1029°C after 120 minutes, and to a<br />

maximum of 1193°C after 360 minutes. These figures illustrate<br />

Fire resistance is not a property of a material but the performance<br />

of a complete element of construction which will generally be<br />

composed of a number of different materials. A fire-resisting<br />

construction can be one of any number of elements in a building,<br />

eg. wall, ceiling, duct, protected shaft or cavity barrier.<br />

The failure criteria of elements of building construction when<br />

building will make no contribution to a fire. All <strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong><br />

products are non-combustible as per BS 476: Part 4: 1970. The<br />

equivalent of this standard in China is GB 8624 (GB 5464-85).<br />

BS 476: Part 7: 1987<br />

Method for classification of the surface spread of flame of<br />

products.<br />

This test puts materials into Classes 1 to 4 in descending order<br />

of performance according to the rate and extent of flame spread<br />

over their surface under standard heating conditions. As all<br />

<strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong> products are non-combustible, they can also be<br />

accepted as having the Class I rating in the surface spread of<br />

flame test.<br />

Fire Tests on <strong>Building</strong> Materials in Structures<br />

tested in accordance with the British Standard (BS 476: Parts<br />

20-24) are as follows:<br />

Loadbearing Capacity<br />

The ability of a specimen of a loadbearing element to support<br />

its test load, where appropriate, without exceeding the specified<br />

criteria with respect to either the extent of, or rate of deformation.


Stability<br />

The ability of the specimen tested to withstand deformation or<br />

collapse.<br />

Integrity<br />

The ability of a test specimen of separable elements to withstand<br />

cracking or opening up to the extent of allowing flames to pass<br />

through the unexposed face.<br />

Insulation<br />

The ability of a test specimen of separable elements to restrict<br />

the temperature rise of the unexposed face to below specified<br />

levels (140°C mean rise, 180°C max. rise).<br />

Fire Testing Standard<br />

The fire performance standard most commonly referred to in<br />

<strong>Building</strong> Codes in Asian countries and Hong Kong is the British<br />

Standard (BS 476: Part 20 to 24). The new European Norm<br />

(EN 1363 – 1366) will gradually replace BS 476 and the current<br />

equivalent are given below:<br />

BS 476: Part 20: 1987 (EN 1363-1: 1999)<br />

This part describes the general procedures and equipment<br />

required to determine the fire resistance of elements of<br />

construction and should be read in conjunction with BS 476:<br />

Part 21, 22, 23 and 24 as appropriate, which describe the<br />

detailed procedures for the testing of individual elements of<br />

construction. For the purposes of these parts, elements of<br />

construction have been categorized into 4 main groups:<br />

a. Loadbearing elements that have fire resistance.<br />

b. Non-loadbearing elements that have fire resistance.<br />

c. Elements that make a contribution to the fire resistance of a<br />

structure.<br />

d. Ducts designed to prevent fire spread across fire barriers.<br />

BS 476: Part 21: 1987 (EN 1365: Part 1 to 4: 1999)<br />

Methods for determining the fire resistance of loadbearing<br />

elements of construction.<br />

This standard describes methods for determining the fire<br />

resistance of loadbearing beams, columns, floors, flat roofs, and<br />

walls. Beams and columns are assessed in terms of loadbearing<br />

capacity, while floors, flat roofs and walls are measured in terms<br />

of loadbearing capacity, integrity and insulation.<br />

The fire resistance of a specimen is the time in minutes from<br />

the start of the test until failure occurs under any one of the<br />

criteria of Stability, Integrity and Insulation if all are appropriate<br />

to the particular type of element being tested; or, if no failure<br />

occurs, until the test is terminated. For example, a test result<br />

showing:<br />

Stability: 180 minutes<br />

Integrity: 120 minutes<br />

Insulation: 120 minutes<br />

would mean that a specimen complied with Stability for 180<br />

minutes and complied with the other criteria for 120 minutes.<br />

BS 476: Part 22: 1987 (EN 1364: Part 1 and 2: 1999)<br />

Methods for determination of the fire resistance of nonloadbearing<br />

elements of construction.<br />

This standard describes methods for determining the fire<br />

resistance of non-loadbearing partitions, doorsets, shutter<br />

assemblies, ceiling membranes. Glazed elements of<br />

construction are determined with respect to integrity, and where<br />

appropriate, insulation.<br />

BS 476: Part 23: 1987<br />

Methods for determining the contribution of components<br />

to the fire resistance of a structure.<br />

This standard describes methods for:<br />

a. determining the fire resistance that is provided by a<br />

suspended ceiling to a standard supporting construction of<br />

steel beams and concrete deck; and<br />

b. determining the contribution of intumescent seals to the fire<br />

resistance of timber door assemblies.<br />

BS 476: Part 24: 1987 (EN 1366-1: 1999)<br />

Methods for determining the fire resistance of ventilation<br />

ducts.<br />

The general purpose of this standard is to test and measure the<br />

ability of a duct assembly to resist the spread of fire from one<br />

compartment to another. Results are expressed in terms of<br />

stability, integrity and, where required, insulation.<br />

<strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong> is made of incombustible materials, using a<br />

special technique and unique formulae to offer fire protection<br />

and durability. It is odourless, non-toxic and completely free of<br />

asbestos and carcinogenic materials such as crystalline silica<br />

or quartz, usually contained in fiber-cement boards and calciumsilicate<br />

boards.<br />

<strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong> is non-combustible, heat-insulating, rot-proof,<br />

water-resistant, weather-resistant, impact-resistant, soundinsulating,<br />

termite-repellent and non-deforming. It is strong,<br />

durable and nail-holding and no pre-drilling is necessary. It is<br />

versatile and easy to use like wood – it can be cut, sawn, drilled,<br />

nailed, screwed, stapled, wallpapered, painted and fabricated<br />

with veneer, laminate or vinyl covering. Thin sheets can be bent<br />

to suit architectural designs. It is so dimensionally-stable that<br />

expansion and contraction is negligible. It will not delaminate<br />

or deteriorate after prolonged exposure to moisture.<br />

<strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong> is indispensable in all areas where fire safety is<br />

essential. Its unique properties make it ideal for partitions,<br />

ceilings, drywalls, hoarding, fire barriers, fire doors, A/C or cable<br />

ducts, E&M services enclosures, raised floor cores, etc.<br />

fire-rated system using a single layer of 6 mm <strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong>,<br />

■ Description: <strong>FIREX</strong>WOOL ® Ceramic Fiber Blanket/Mat is<br />

lightweight, have low thermal conductivities, low heat storage<br />

Thin gauge (≤ 9 mm) <strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong> can be cut with box cutters<br />

or hand-held saws fitted with carbide tipped cutting blades. If<br />

hand-held saws are to be used, it is recommended to cut<br />

<strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong> sheets in well ventilated spaces. Workers should<br />

wear protective face masks.<br />

Fastening<br />

The most economical method of fastening<br />

<strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong> is to use pneumatic nailing and<br />

nailing and stapling equipment. For producing<br />

good screw-connections, variable speed<br />

electric screw drivers with friction clutches are<br />

most suitable.<br />

<strong>FIREX</strong><br />

Systems<br />

Finishing<br />

<strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong> has a surface good for most forms of decoration.<br />

Tiles or wallcoverings can be applied directly onto <strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong><br />

without the use of any sealers or paint.<br />

Tiling<br />

For surface preparation, all joints should first be filled with dampproof<br />

filler materials. It is recommended to prime the board to<br />

improve adhesion by reducing the absorbency of the surface.<br />

Joints between adjacent tiles should not coincide with those of<br />

<strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong>, except in the case of expansion joints.<br />

Painting<br />

Water and emulsion-based paints are compatible with<br />

<strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong>.<br />

Painting on a <strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong> surface.<br />

Wallcoverings<br />

<strong>FIREX</strong> <strong>BOARD</strong> requires no special treatment to receive all forms<br />

of traditional and modern wallcoverings. Proprietary adhesives<br />

compatible with the wallcovering should be applied in<br />

accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations.<br />

Plastering<br />

A gap of maximum 2-3 mm should be allowed between board<br />

joints. After the first base application of plastering compound,<br />

all joints including board to board or board to other building<br />

components should be concealed with a glass fiber tape. Finish<br />

this with a final application of plaster to give a seamless<br />

appearance.<br />
