CD - MASDAN MO ANG KAPALIGIRAN
VCDK 73 Philipines
Difficult to unravel this collection, but it definitely contains the bands rare debut album from 1978 (Asin
"Asin") which is reason for excitement, as it contains their famous recording of Freddie Aguilars Anak"-one
of the top Philippine singles of all-time according to those who know such things; there also seem to be a
couple of songs from "Himig ng Pag-Ibig" included for no apparent reason; fourteen tracks, most of which
are sung by lovely Lolita Carbon, who enters the pantheon of all-time most attractive female vocalists; her
Maddy Prior-esque voice is on display throughout the disc. Digitally remastered. Lyrics (in Tagalog)
included.
CD - HIMIG NG PAG-IBIG
BCD 158 Philipines
The band had its beginnings in the Phillipine folk bloom of the late 70s. Official reissue of Asins rare
second album (1979) which showcases the bands strengths-an environmental song (Hangin) with guitar
soaring over strings, a vehicle for lovely Lolita Carbon (the title song) and a song about Mindanao, the
Philippine heartland (Balita, sampled by the Black-Eyed Peas for their cut entitled The Apl Song.);
harmonic arrangements and Tagalog language vocals sound strangely like English folk/psych bands like
Steeleye Span, or Mellow Candle at times; great guitar at surprising moments (Kahapon At Pag-Inig); its
easy to see why record collectors pay premium prices for this album-its very good from start to finish.
CD - HIMIG KAYUMANGGI
BCD 111 Philipines
Filipinian import! Another rare album debuts on compact disc, this one from 1980; "Himig Kayumanggi"
found Asin adding more variety to their sound, although the smooth Tagalog language vocals of lovely
Lolita Carbon are (as always) the main feature; crisper production might seem a drawback to some, but
the ethereal melancholy of Ili Ili"-a truly special song-can surely make all of us forget the oddly placed club-
Med reggae rhythm of Pamilinawen; Sarungbanggi and Ladtudan among other folk melodies make me
realize that Asin (at least on this album) are the closest thing to Steeleye Span that all of Asia is ever likely
to produce.
ASOKA
1971 Mellotronen / S Psych Rock Hard 14,90 €
CD - ASOKA ++ (Digipak)
Mello CD 019 S
Finally an official reissue of this classic Swedish HEAVY PSYCH/PROG rock album originally from 1971!!
Formed by the remnants of 60's white blues-boom band 'Taste Of Blues' (who made one fabulous album).
HEAVY FUZZ guitars, rough gritty vocals, wailing organs and SPACED OUT echo-violins, make this a
pure HEAVY PSYCH trip. This CD is taken from the original masters tapes, remastered for the occasion
with lots of bonus tracks and if that’s not enough housed in a nice Digipak. Truly a great album and musthave
for all 70's buffs.
CD - And Along comes
CCM 0647 USA
One of the great pop-rock albums of the 60s, 'And Then.Along Comes the Association' not only notched
two Top 10 hits in 'Along Comes Mary' and 'Cherish', but also introduced the groups creamy harmony
sound to the world. Curt Boettchers production still defines "sunshine pop" to this day, and the whole
record just works.also includes 'Enter the Young; Your Own Love; Dont Blame It on Me; Blistered; Ill Be
Your Man; Standing Still; Message of Our Love; Round Again; Remember', and 'Changes'. A classic
CD - Renaissance
CCM 3802 USA
Reissue of 1966 album, one of the group's most varies releases. The single "Pandora's golden heebie
jeebies" was oddly enough the strangest, most psychedelic track of the album. The rest veered from folk
pop rock harmony to jazz to bubblegum pop.
ASSOCIATION
1967 Collector's Choice / US 60's Psych Pop 12,90 €
CD - Insight Out
CCM 3812 USA
Though this 1967 album boasted 2 massive hits "Windy" and "Never my love" the rest was no mere filler.
They were always a more album oriented band. Including covers of P.F. Sloan's "On a quiet night" and
Tim Hardin's "Reputation" etc. ending with the mabitious, anti-war "Requiem for the masses".
ASSOCIATION
1968 Collector's Choice / US 60's Psych Pop 12,90 €
CD - Birthday
CCM 3822 USA
Released in 1968, this was probably their most pop sounding album. Producer Bones Howe and the group
polished their trademark harmony sound to a brilliant sheen.
